« A quick study? Michael Egnew is up next | Main | Bills at Dolphins: I got it you take it »

Wannstedt's unchanging approach finally a plus for Miami

Earlier this year I shared with you how Dave Wannstedt, former Dolphins coach and current Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator, had not changed a lot with age.

His scheme is still the 4-3.

He still wants his cornerbacks to press.

He still believes in playing a very unsophisticated system that doesn't do much in the way of disguises or blitzes or, well, changing from game to game.

This approach, which worked great at the University of Miami in the 1980s and with the Dallas Cowboys in the early 1990s, is probably a good way to go when it's backed up by superior talent. Ultimately, talent trumps everything.

You got it, you got it.

You don't, you beter figure something else out.

Well, as you know Wannstedt didn't have it to the degree he believed during his time with the Miami Dolphins. He certainly doesn't have it with the Bills.

And yet, his philosophy has. Not. Changed.

So much for adapting or evolving.

This philosophy was fine for a while with the Dolphins but as with most things in the NFL, somebody eventually studies the problem and solves it. The Dolphins' defense got solved eventually.

That's why Wannstedt won the AFC East his first season and advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs. They made the playoffs again his second year and then they missed the playoffs three consecutive years, eventually falling to 4-12 in 2004 and quitting before the season ended as he was going to be fired anyway.

Folks figured out the Dolphins defense. Players complained about it. I wrote about it extensively at the time. And Wannstedt did very little to correct the issue.

The most obvious proof this was happening? The Dolphins typically started fast but swooned as the seasons closed. Why? It wasn't the change in weather. It was the lack of change and in a defense that was apparently too easy to figure out.

Nowhere was this more obvious than in AFC East play. As the teams played each other twice, it gave opponents a second chance to figure Miami's defense out. And they did.

The Dolphins had a 10-7 record in first annual meetings against AFC East opponents during Wannstedt's time. They had a 6-9 record in the second annual meetings against those same opponents. (Wannsted left in October of 2004 which accounts for the 17 games on the first end but only 15 on the rematches).

So why is this history important?

Well, Wannstedt is basically the same coach only older in Buffalo. Earlier this year, the Bills didn't blitz, didn't change or disguise things on defense. They basically played their defense game after game and Wannstedt expected it to work.

When he was asked why he wasn't blitzing early on, he answered, "The front four has to get there."

And that brings me to this:

After all those years of being victimized by Wannstedt's unchanging approach, this week the Dolphins can benefit from that same stone age, unchanging approach.

Yes, the Bills beat Miami in the first meeting between the teams. But this week offers the Miami coaching staff, particularly the offensive coaches, another crack at the same looks, same scheme, same approach, for the second time.

This game is an opportunity for the Miami staff to show itself able to absorb information and solve the problem.

And they can do it with a degree of certainty that the Bills are not changing the variables as they prepare for the game because that's not how Wannstedt works.

What can I say? SMH.

it's ok to punt.

Wanny was the last decent HC we've had. Saban, Cameron, and Sparano were all terrible. The jury is still out on Philbin.

IN THE LAST 13 YEARS ,WE HAVE BUST PLAYERS,BUST COACHES,BUST GM.......

Cam Cameron is looking for a job. So will Tony Sparano after the season. Same ought to be said for Wanny.

Guys,

Check out the Egnew link at the bottom.

Egnew's great catching the ball but absolutely terrible blocking. Actually beyond terrible. I see why theDolphins have had to work with from "GROUND ZERO" with blocking.

Im sure they new this upon drafting him, but his recieving skills are absolutely great. See for yourselves:

Guys,

Crazy stat, both Rishard Matthews and Michael Egnew played for college qb's that would go on to start in the nfl. Enew played with Blaine Gabbert at Missouri, and was actually one his best recieving targets.

Rishard Matthews teamed with Colin Kappernick at Nevada to be one of his more potent recieving threats.

Its possible we could have "UNTAPPED FUTURE GOLD" in both. Just saying. Here are some Kaepernick to Matthews highlights:

Wan-stach is responsible for Ricky quitting on the team. Took 3 years off of his career running him 300 plus times in 2002

Wannstadt has a winning record with the Dolphins, over 90 wins as an NFL HC, a coach of the year honor with the Bears, and multiple SB rings as an assistant. A pretty good resume'.

I'm pretty sure it was pot that was really responsible for Ricky quitting, not Wannstadt.

SHULA,

A LOT OF DUMB PEOPLE WORK AS ASSISTANTS FOR THE PATS WHO HAVE 4 SB RINGS EACH ..........

Wanny can't count. If they put 6 guys on your 4 and the receivers are running around a large football field someone is going to get open. So that is all we have to do. Double team all of their good players and hope one of our receivers or backs can get open. Too easy.

Armanmdo,

The last blog was a pretty good one. Why did you to go and dig up the "DEAD" with a Wannstadt blog so soon?

Wannstadt is ancient garbage. This blog is about as exciting as writing about fossilized dinosaur bones.

It would have been far more interesting to write about the "FLINTSTONES".

Armando,

Has Wannstadt shaved the pornstache yet?

We've had a lot worse coaches then Dave Wannstedt. lol

LMAO,

I guess youre living proof Armando hasnt banned all of the "IMPERSONATING" trolls yet. LOL...

YG, Im not impersonating anyone. I just know that you have always been ALoco, Im assuming you get a kick out of being a dumb poster who posts non sensical post.

That's all the attention I'll give to a "JUST DUMB POSTER" here today. Stop embarrassing yourself, Armando's laughing at you. But, I guess you get your kicks out being "JUST DUMB". LOL...

SMH?

YG...WHAT IF I SIGN ,YG4 EVER,,,,,THE DUMB POSTER,WILL SAY ,,YOU SEE ,YG FORGOT TO CHANGE NAMES ,....

He meant to say SMF (Smart Mother Fu@ker)

Aloco,
curious question, why do you call Ireland a garage manager?

ALoco,

See the videos in my 2:35 PM posts. Rishard Matthews has great upside and so does Egnew.

You'll notice in the Egnew video, he's a great recievers, but god-awful blocker. Exactly why the coaching staff has had to begin at "GROUND ZERO" teaching him how to "BLOCK".

Pee-wee leaguers blocked better. But he's one hellua pass catcher. The kid learns to block and he could easily be a pro bowl calibre nfl TE.

Wow now YG is having converstations with his alter ego ALoco, YG you are mentally disturbed. So your post something under YG, then 1 min later post under ALoco in all CAPS. Your sicker that I thought. Maybe your brain is on par with Jeffrey Dahmer.

I CALL HIM GARAGE MANAGER B/C;;;;;;;;;;;

1-HE TRADES PLAYERS AND DRAFT PLAYERS AND RELEASE PLAYERS BASED ON HIS OWN INTEREST ,NOT THE DOLPHINS.......

2- THE DOLPHINS ARE RUN AS A GARAGE,SOME OUT NOW AND SOME IN LATER ,,,LIKE PARKING SPACES....

It was during Wannstache's tenure that Jason Cole, formerly of the Herald and no w/ Yahoo Sports I believe, personally confirmed my suspicion that NFL coaches are not rocket scientists.

YG....TO WORK ...LATER..I WILL WATCH IT...

Cadillac is Home, and neither should be banned. Both are usually right and always are funny.

Aloco,

You do know his job is to trade, draft, and release players, right? Since his job is the Dolphins GM, his interest = Dolphins interest?

Wannstache also ran Ricky Williams out of the league by using him as a battering ram.

I am starting to sense that Bush is gonna put up a monster 200 yard game.

Egnew wasnt a bad college blocking TE, he was "absolutely horrible".

Im sure the fins knew this upon drafting him. Just that his recieving skills are "so great". They knew that startin ground zero and teaching him to block. This kid could become an absolute terror at TE in the nfl.

Guys, once this kid gets blocking down, he's going to be pro bowl calibre for sure. Our TE of the future is already on the roster. He just needs to learn how to block, and the coaching staff has had to begin at "GROUND ZERO" teaching him this.

You cant have a guy on the field absolutely horrible at blocking. No matter how good his recieving skills are. Thats why he hadnt been activated up to possibly now.

COMMEN SENSE.........

HIS JOB TO TRADE ,BUT NOT LIKE A STOCK MARKET BROKER WHO BANKRUPT HIS TEAM ...IN THE OFF SEASON ,HE DOESN'T SIGN NO GOOD ONES,BUT ONCE THE SEASON STARTS ,HIS GAME OF POKER STARTS...........

GAFFENEY ?????????? ANY ONE

LATER,DONKEYS...

Modern TEs are for catching TDs, not blocking.

Apparently Home is also Tim Couch. Because thats about the only person that could have that opinion...

Cadillac is Home, and neither should be banned. Both are usually right and always are funny.

You are also Home & 3 split personas is enough to be bannded.

Get lost you beatnick!

Uhh.. He traded two players. Both of which aren't exactly working miracles for their teams and got two 3rds, 2nd and coniditional... Not bad.

What about Gaffney?

soothsayer,

You cant be an every down "modern te" if you cant blocked. Sooner or later you'll get one of your teammates "killed".

Even a wr needs to know how to block to some degree.

Armando - 2000 afc east champs - 2001 wildcard, hosted home game against Balt

Sorry if that hit "home" ;)

^^kris, acceptable smily^^

I gotcha Aloco,
This preseason he had $6 million to sign and make this team better that needed WR help, TE, CB, LB, and OL. Its hard to do that when drafting and tryingt o bring in people for a good price. We over paid for Dansby and havent for players like Flynn.
If he is the GM this coming preseason and has $40million + to play with and 5 picksin the first three 3 rounds plus multiple others and fails then i will join the FIRE IRELAND bandwagon..

There are Heisman winners like Tim Couch, Danny Whuerffel, and Timmy Tebow, and then there are everybody else (aka "losers").

ddt

We *should* be 8-6 GOD DAMN IT!

look at that list of Heisman winners and their NFL careers..

I wonder why teams keep giving Wannsted opportunities to coach if he is this stubborn.

Uhh.. He traded two players. Both of which aren't exactly working miracles for their teams and got two 3rds, 2nd and coniditional... Not bad.

Posted by: CommonSense | December 20, 2012 at 03:15 PM

Not exactly working miracles? So you'd rather have Egnew than:

107 catches

1,398 yards

13.1 ypc

10 td's

?????

Whats their record? Also its Egnew +. Not to mention, pretty sure Philbin didn't want to coach the guy...

Not knocking Marshall guys a good reciever when he shows up, but you're kidding yourself if you thought he was this teams messiah. He dropped more TDs last year than he caught.

Also, since when is having a hand in drafting Vontae & then trading him a few years later for a 2nd, considered redemption?

I don't care if he traded him for a pot of gold. He was a mistake & he was let go without a back up plan.

As was Marshall.

I just provided you Marshall's stats. We replaced Marshall with Egnew & Vontae with no one.

Yep, that's what good gm's do. Trade away mistakes they made & bring zip in return.

You applaud this? Do you sit up at night wondering why this team sucks annually?
