A Dolfan's warning to Joe Philbin

With his rookie season as an NFL head coach behind him, Joe Philbin probably has the trust of most Miami fans because, well, he didn't totally screw up.

He was fine.

The team was 7-9.

And like practically everyone else on the team, the coach needs to get better at his job.

So there's that. But I recently got a letter from a Dolphins fan in New England who doesn't compare what Philbin is to Cam Cameron any other Dolphins coach who failed. He compares him to Bill Belichick because that's the guy he's got to beat.

And right now, the comparison is not exactly kind.

The letter from Stephen Quigley of Massachusetts:

Armando,

As a lifelong Dolphins fan living in New England I have a better feel for the Patriots than the Dolphins. It is clear that Tom Brady plays at a level that a Dolphin fan can only dream about.  I love Dan Marino but I would take Brady every day of the week and certainly twice on any Sunday that mattered.:

The problem I see for so many teams is conservative coaching.  Yesterday was a perfect example.  Miami is down two TD’s early in the game.  The second TD comes at the end of an all too easy 92-yd drive.  The Dolphins get the ball back and move down the field; the result of some nice plays and a questionable roughing the passer penalty.  Regardless they are faced with a 4th and 9 at the Patriots 24-yd line.  What do they do?  A 41-yd field goal attempt with a replacement kicker.  Why?  Even if Kaeding makes the kick it is still a two TD game.  The kick is missed and NE walks right down the field again and score a third TD.  The game was on the verge of getting out of hand (it did) so what is the benefit of getting 3pts closer when you are 7-8 playing against a superior team on the road?  Would Joe Philbin have been pleased with a 28-3 loss?

You cannot match TD’s with field goals.  That was Tony Sporano’s philosophy (see yesterdays Jets loss) and he is a bum. Belichick and Brady gamble all of the time.  They have talent and experience.  How can a team with less talent and less experience even consider playing any less aggressively?  The coaching staff must play to win the game and not play to keep their job.  In  Superbowl XXXVI, Belichick gambled on Brady against a superior team at the end of the game.  The result was a stunning upset of the high powered Rams.  Do you know why?  Because Belichick did not want to risk the Superbowl on a flip of the coin or wait for the other guy to screw it up.  He wanted to win it and was willing to deal with the fallout if they did not.  That decision took a lot of guts but that is how this game must be played.  Belichick was not a proven head coaching commodity at that time and neither was Brady a future Hall of Famer.  Not yet.

Joe Philbin did nothing this year that we have not seen for years.  Brady is going to be playing at a high level for at least three more seasons.  Will Joe Philbin be around still?  Not coaching the way he did yesterday.

I read your article today and I agree yesterday was a disaster.  My concern is that ownership might not see it that way.  It is not just the players in my opinion.

In contrast the Miami Dolphins website notes that the Dolphins are clearly the second best team in the division.  Second best?

Thank you,

Stephen

I think he makes a valid point. The Dolphins weren't going to beat the Patriots in New England in December by kicking field goals from the Pats' 24. Moreover, the team had nothing to lose and played as if this was some sort of battle for an AFC East title. I know that's history now, but it is something that merits consideration going forward.

So what do you think?

Marino, biggest choker ever.

Oooh yeeah when I get Ms. Elizabeth going on all 4s.....oh yeeeeah. You can imagine what's goin' down next!! Dig it???!??

Mike there is no way you can be serious. How many SBs did Marino win in his prime?

Brady should have 5.

Kris, if Belichick gets all angry and redfaced and runs up the score, the Dolphins STILL LOSE.

So what?

Losing is losing. You want to lose close? That makes you feel better?

Or you want to play for a chance to win? Improbable chance. But more of a chance than playing not to lose big.

marino himself would take brady who u foolin?
lol

Marino had exactly 4 good years, none after 1986. AFter 1986 he was a pick 6 machine.

I think some are taking the intention of the letter out of context.

Mando,

Before that game even Kicked off the announcers made the point that there were heavy swirling winds. On one of their TD's faced with the same situation the Pats decided to go for it even though their Kicker Gotkowski has been Kicking in the elements for them going on 7 Seasons. I believe on the 4th down play Brady hits Welker on a little curl route in front of Sean Smith. Belichik played the higher percentage play under the circumstances from around his 20 rather than risk the miss giving us the ball at around the 26 or 27 Yardline.

In the same situation we went for the Kick that the Pats didn't feel had a shot in the same situation in their own Stadium?? To compound things I believe the Dolphins players were there in body alone and isn't this a team with lots of starts looking for new contracts?? They certainly didn't play like players looking to make a statement about their spots on the 2013 squad with very few exception (Hartline the most notable giving effort and I'm not a huge fan of a big contract for him but must be honest)

Under those circumstances the Kick would have given the Pats the ball on their 29 yardline but from my perspective would have given Tannehill an invaluable rep or reps had he made it but again this team had already folded it's tents because normally our D with the opposing team on their side of the field inside the 30 and you would have taken it. I know alot on here talk about resigning this player or that player but these guys played like a mentally weak group displaying ZERO pride and I seeing this switched over to Fox to see if Adrian Peterson broke Dickerson's record by mid 3rd Qrt. disgusted with a team obviously mailing it in which is by far the biggest concern for me with the Core of players in what has become a losing culture.

Kris, agreed in that game. It was over by 2nd half. I'd still liked to see them try and score, and open things up, not to win, but just for experience for Tannehill, but you're right, would have woken the beehive. Then it would've been 48-0.

But, I also agree Therion's post was funny. Mando JUST got done saying Philbin's generally seen to have had a good Season, respect of the fans and organization, etc. Now he wants to sh*t on the guy. Bipolar is right!

faversham, everything you mentioned has been discussed and discussed and discussed here for months.

You are late to the party. Try to catch up.

Amando,
Not fair. In Bellichick's first year with Brady he was kicking just as many field goals on 4th and 8 from the 24 no matter what score. Bellichick only began gambling more over the years as he got more and more confidence in Brady. And, to Brady's credit he gave every reason for that confidence building.

Who cares honestly had miami even competed in that game, then what will it have solved for the season other than another missed opportunity for a playoff run and miami sitting home for the playoffs yet again...

A close lose wouldve installed more confidence in GM Irefiend and his coherts that this team wasnt in NEED of the playmakers they so DESPERATLY DO NEED on this team..

It also wouldve made Ross a more gullible beleiver that this team didnt need more than 1-2 players to finally compete for a championship....

Maybe, just maybe another spanking by a team that is far superior in talent and success might finally have miami convinced that this team needs a lot of help in FA and the draft to make the jump most teams wouldve figured out years ago like Atlanta(In chasing NO) and Seattle(In chasing SF) seemed to have over the past few years of building their teams...

If you have Belichick's players, you can take more chances. Isn't that obvious?

The general point that Miami may need to be more daring and creative is well taken, but Stephen's letter is not the way to support that point.

Anderson,

Couldn't agree more.

TanneBust got SHUT OUT!!

Therion takes mando to the woodshed!

Randy, FREAK OUT, FREAK OUT!!!

worse home loss since 68'
who was qb'ing?

Brady over Marino??!! LOL!!

F the Patriots I want the Dolphins to be the best not some team that loses in the first round.

Armando, great stuff and insight. Again you prove you are by far the best Dolphin reporter. Keep up the great work!

Big off season this year. Lots to do. But to summarize a rookie head coach's season on one single meaningless game is pathetic. Miami is and has been for most if the season riddled with injuries. They play hard every game. I live in upstate NY and even the fans of the Jets, Giants, and Bills recognize that here. This team has alot of heart and will continue to get better.

And the person posting under 2 watt is an idiot

Mark you really need to get over your Mando hissyfits. They're getting old.

Plus, the guy is the best at what he does.

only a moron would live in upstate ny.
lmao

Remember when JT said the Fins should trade their entire team for Tom Brady. The Pats would never have done that. lol

Chris Rainey just got released today from the Steelers, hes a playmaker and fast as s h i t

out of touch out of towners = CLUELESS

For the most part I agree however the biggest misconception in NFL history is that Brady in that superbowl against the rams won the game. he had 85 yards passing going into the final drive of the game. If not for a super human effort by Ty Law, lawyer Milloy, Terrell Buckley, and the rest of that secondary, brady never gets a chance in that final drive. Brady was hidden for that entire game save for that last drive. But as usual winners get to write the history books and those who were around to remember it only get to provide an opinion.

Don't forget the inside pressure Richard Seymour then a rookie gave as well. He spent that afternoon all up in Warner's grill along with Ty Warren or for that matter the stupid tuck rule that gets them there because it should have been Chuckie's Raiders in that one!

you're going to have tannehill try for 4th and 9?
at the end of the game on 4th down, he threw the ball away instead of taking a sack. On 4TH DOWN! you don't throw the ball out of bounds moron.

Armando, This fans opinion is just that an opinion. Truth be told, New England is superior to the Dolphins. Have been so for a decade. Most everything they do is hailed as a stroke of genious. Most everything the Dolphins do is hailed as dumb. The truth is simple. Switch QB's and the W-L records of each team will change drastically. How many games do you think New England would of won with Tannehill? 7 or 8. You put Brady in Miami and we win 11. Belichek cannot be judge a great coach until he can go to the Super Bowl with another team (QB). Shula went with four different QB's. So did Gibbs in Washington. Now those were GREAT coaches.

Congratulations! 2 Watt, thanks for making my statement come true. :)

Awesome handle, Randy Poffo, RIP!!!

Macho Man Randy Savage!!!!

(Randy Poffo is Randy Mach Man Savage's real name)

Mark in Toronto | January 10, 2013 at 02:54 PM

I agree and Bro Leaping Lenny Poffo was the king of the turnbuckle jumpers.

Frank, sorry if I offended you by telling you like it is about your brother in law. Funny how Therion, Kris, DC, and I comment about the same thing and you single me out....

And I don't need to get over anything, so suck a tailpipe

Why do some of you blame Marino for not winning a SB? Why does Shula get a pass? Did he EVER get Marino a RB? Defense? I mean, he got him some receivers. Geez, thanks Don.

go finssssssss

And I the onlyone who remembers when Adam Vinatieri was the biggest post season hero in Patriot history???

Yeah, fgs are for losers alright ...

Mando,

Instead of torturing us with poor little Stephen's tirade about a rookie HC--why not post a blog about our Asst. GM Brian Gaine who is going to interview for..Wait for it...The freaking Jets??? LMFAO!!!

Please let him take Parcells' & Ireland's philosophy of drafting players to NY so he can ensure that they will miss year after year on WR's, TE's, RB's, & CB's just like we have. You know, all of the unimportant positions that don't REALLY matter in the new high powered, passing game. But hey Ross says that we MIGHT have found a QB!!! He thinks maybe we have which is good enough for me.

Personally, I couldn't care less about the upcoming FA or the draft (I'm with Ross on this) it's wondering what the new logo is going to look like that is keeping me up at night!!! We're talking about a NFL franchise that is putting more effort into a f#cking logo than it is to making sure we have someone for Tannehill to throw the ball to!!! I can't believe guys like Naanee or Armstrong or Gaffnew were not the answer this year...

nathan. 4.6 yd. avg.
marino = ball w.hore.

Armando
Those were excellent observations by the New England Phins Fan. However, the game he brags about the Patriots winning was Spy Gate!!! Just sayin.

Armando,
Can't compare Brady to Marino. Different era different rules. In today's game Marino, Clayton, Duper and Nat Moore would of been unstopable. If Brady played in Marino's time, when linebackers and DL could hit, pile drive and abuse the QB as they pleased Brady would of been totally different. It is WELL know that when you rattle Brady he is not the same QB. Imagine Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White, Jerome Brown to name a few introducing themselves to Brady on third and long. Hell Pretty Tom may not have wanted to come out of the locker room

Excuses for Marino? TOO FUNNY!!

Can't say I liked those Philbin calls in that last
Game either. But this suppossed Dolfan looks more Patriot than anything else.

I agree with Frank Caliendo. Mark you sound like a little whiney biatch.

And your retorts are lame. Men face facts and make their points without resorting to quibbling or name-calling. Move on little boy.

Suck a tailpipe?

Mark, if I were Mando I'd ban your lame a s s and your lame commentary and improve the blog 1000 percent in the process.

marino. 8 wins.
10 losses in the p/o's
chooooooooooooooooooke
lol

Also some players are just in the right place at the righ time given I saw alot of games early in Dan's career were he dealt with the rush very effectively and feel if the 83-90 Marino has the 02-present day Pats he would have completed the undefeated Season given we all know Brady becomes an erratic Mrs. when under a ton of pressure.

DC DOOFUSS,

TONY NATHAN WAS A GREAT BACK. AND BRADY WON ONE SB WITH NO RB'S AND ANOTHER ONE WITH NO WR'S. MANNING WON A SB WITH NO D! BUT KEEP MAKING EXCUSES FOR CHOKER DAN! .....AND BLAMING SHULA? IDIOT! LOL

Chris Rainey was cut after he was arrested for slapping his girlfriend. That makes me doubt he's a Joe Philbin type.

Of course, he made very few actually big plays this year so I imagine that makes him a Jeff Ireland type.

On the one hand, Stephen is exactly correct. You can't win with FGs. You can't win being conservative. I live in CT so I cry every time I see the Pats win. And we've seen nothing from any Dolphin - all the way from Ross to Ireland to Philbin to Tannehill - to suggest we're the next dynasty ready to take over.

On the other hand, calculated gambles with great talent would make anyone look like a genius. So really, is it the gambling that is leading to the winning? Or the talent of the future HOFer Brady?

i saw someone wrote that if the jets hire our asst.GM as their GM they would have all our info on the draft.
I think that would be awesome as the jets pick before us and could pick all the scrubs from Acorn State,I mean alcorn state before we do.

Surperphin,

The fans are convinced but apparently Ireland must think his scouts are doing a good job. A GM has to rely on his scouting department to find players & I believe our scouts are some of the worst in the NFL. If your scouting department can't find a starting WR or a starting TE or a starting RB or a starting CB then what they hell are these guys getting paid for??? Clyde Gates who Ireland also LOVED, BJ Cunningham, & Egnew are not even good enough to be back-ups let alone starters??? Three complete busts in two years at the WR & TE position. And then Matthews with a 7th round pick who is a 4th or 5th WR on any other team.

You don't need to pay people to find busts do you???

What does Buffalo,New York, and Miami all have in common when it comes to NE???

Inferiority!

None of those teams have even smelled the gap between themselves and the pats in competitiveness, hence now you see Buffalo redo everything by Firing HC and GM, and New York firing GM and their inept fist pumper in OC Sparano.

Miami just needs to get a clue and realize that Ireland doesnt have the eye for that what is needed to close the gap on a team that has dominated for over a decade in this division.

Scourt @ 3:08....

I like our HC....lobbied hard on this blog for Philbin to be the pick OVER Fisher.....and would have been fine with a 63-0 beat down....it changes NOTHING imo....

however...there are those that would take a 45 plus point beat down and begin to call for the HC job....

So YES...imo...score matters for those fickle fans in the matter of public opinion....

The look-whos-coming approach with a Woman can touch her Bartholin glands.

I agree with the letter. we are nowhere near where the pats are and our talent level is so inferior that it is mind boggling. but that's ok, let's suck for Luck (can't do that now) or for RGIII, or even draft a qb that will take us to the playoffs his first season R Wilson. all 3 teams had worst or similar records than us and a rookie qb. where was our playoff invite? we need to get better players regardless of how it happens. but can jeffy do that with his previous track record? i don't think so. but what do we know except that we continue to hope that we become relevant again & soon but it really doesn't look good with these idiots making the decisions!!

Tony Nathan. YOU'RE the moron buddy. You don't even sound like a Dolphins fan. You sound like a SHE!

John,
We have an average coach? You do realize that with the crap roster we had he had us vying for the playoffs at one point. Youre trying to compare him with two coaches that have their teams picking #1 and #2 in the draft and one of those teams had 5 probowlers on them??? Its been awhile since weve had a coach that actually wants to develope players through the draft. I mean the teams you mentioned, hows the coaching carousel in those cities? This coach came from a winning philosophy and is trying to instill it in Miami, does that happen over night? I mean he said himself that he changed the lockerroom and various other things to move foward. Philbin is a rookie head coach that will make a few mistakes.. Its all about taking gambles at the right time and apparently in the NE game he decided not to..

marino 8 playoff wins, 1 since

The Herald's new website changes suck! I won't pay a dime for information which I can get for free elsewhere.

"On the other hand, calculated gambles with great talent would make anyone look like a genius. So really, is it the gambling that is leading to the winning? Or the talent of the future HOFer Brady?"

Agreed. Belichick has said before that you can't be a great coach unless you have great talent. Nothing could be more true. I don't recall Belichick building any super powers in Cleveland. He went 36-44 in five seasons, he made the playoffs once, & then finished his last season at 5-11 before he was fired. Then the team moved to Baltimore & hired Ted Marchibroda.

While Phil Jackson has won more NBA titles than any other coach it doesn't hurt when you have players like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Kobe Bryant, Shaq...This doesn't take away from the fact that Jackson's a great coach but it's like he won championships with scrubs??? Could any coach at the professional level??? Not happening.

That's because they have a HOF all world QB... They have faith that if the gamble doesn't pay off that their QB will make up for on the next drive... Don't compare the our situation with theirs...

We have an average coach? You do realize that with the crap roster we had he had us vying for the playoffs at one point. MattyB,

Great post. Apparently rookie HC's & rookies QB's must win SB's in their first season or they're not good.
