Stream of consciouness about ... everything

After yesterday's press conference to announce the modernization of Sun Life, I was talking to a some Dolphins officials when one of them brought up the point that the push to get the public funding portion of this deal would have been much, much easier if the team on the field was better.

No doubt about that.

The 49ers won an ballot measure for funding of their new stadium right after going to the NFC championship game last year. The Heat got their new arena on the heels Pat Riley coming to Miami, promising a parade down Biscayne Boulevard, and trading for Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway. Yeah, the team was in the middle of a 61-win season when the measure was approved so nice timing.

The Jets and Giants got their new digs amid multiple AFC Championship game appearances by one and a Super Bowl title by the other.

The Atlanta Falcons, by the way, are really good these days so they're going to get a new stadium.

Good things happen off the field when good things happen on the field, folks. Politicians are more prone to jump on bandwagons. Fans are more apt to accept team requests for, say, a bed tax increase that doesn't really affect them anyway.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins are making this request right smack in the middle of the team's worst four years. Ever.

The team's current four-year string of losing seasons and failure to make the playoffs is the worst in club history.

And that brings me to this:

I just found another reason the Dolphins should be aggressive, big players in free agency and alike this offseason.

Look, I know it's bad policy to make football moves for the sake of helping the business side of the organization. But the truth is the Dolphins football moves have been hindering the business side for years now.

Why do you think the stands haven't been full and owner Stephen Ross has had to swallow hard and pay for his own tickets the last few years?

This offseason, which starts in mid-March, is an opportunity to help both the football side and the business side. If, unlike the past two years, the Dolphins can identify two, perhaps three bigtime free agents that are worthy of rich contracts instead of shopping for bargain basement dolts that end up cut or on the roster's margins, that might also help the effort to get the stadium modernized.

I grant you the tether between both issues is frail. The Dolphins need action from the Florida legislature and Miami-Dade government before the South Florida Super Bowl bid goes to an NFL vote in 18 weeks.

But free agency begins in nine weeks.

If Miami can play big and play to win the first few days of free agency when the prized players go anyway, that might sway some elected officials while also, you know, improving a roster that sorely needs the upgrade.

Understand me. My priority is the roster. That was proven Monday when I didn't ask any questions at the stadium presser. Even Ross kidded me about how quiet I was. I was quiet because I'm more a football and big picture guy than a micro stadium question guy.

I care about the product on the field more than the field itself.

But I've also seen how the stadium doesn't help deliver any sort of homefield advantage. I've seen how uncomfortable the place can be. I travel around the NFL and understand Sun Life is aging compared to other facilities that have come on line.

So I make room for the idea that success on the field can lead to success off as well.

By the way, Ross also busted my, um, chops about telling him which free agents I want signed. He apparently read my GM Salguero plan and wanted names.

I told him I would get him names of guys I want.

(Yeah, that will get tossed in the garbage).

Names not withstanding, I want to remind you of the philosophy I believe the Dolphins should follow this offseason: Go big!

Don't shop at K-Mart. You get marginal guys looking for bargains. The past couple of seasons have proven that. And the last thing the Dolphins need to do is add more marginal talent to a 7-9 team. The club would be better served not adding free agents than signing cheap, broken ones that will be competing to play special teams.

The Dolphins need difference-makers, folks. Yes, find them in the draft, by all means. That should be the nucleus to the team. But please, please, please don't avoid them like the plague in free agency or if they become available in trades.

Premium players cost premium money or picks. Anthony Gonzalez did. Robert Griffin III did. Peyton Manning did. Pierre Garcon did. Brandon Carr did. Aqib Talib did. And that was just last season. The NFL is filled with players acquired through free agency or trades that made a difference for their new teams, contrary to what the Dolphins said last week.

Wes Welker, Anquan Bolden (which I advocated for over Brandon Marshall in 2010), Jared Allen, Julius Peppers, John Abraham, Drew Brees, Vincent Jackson (another one I advocated for), Greg Olsen (another one I advocated for), on and on. All went to new teams as free agents or via trade and made an impact.

The Dolphins need to identify two or three such guys this offseason and do work.

Hint, Mr. Ross: WR Mike Wallace. DE Paul Kruger. TE Martellus Bennett (yeah, how about signing a former Cowboy that can make some plays). This off the top of my head. And assuming they're available, which is still to be seen.

I say identify two bigtime signings. And go get them. And then add somebody else that maybe thought himself a big-money guy but whose market has come back to earth. I believe Greg Jennings may find himself in that market.

Whats wrong is you're only looking at the small one, you're not seeing the big picture imo. And the deal will get done with or.without our approval as local politicians need to.show.they can spurn economic growth in a bad economy in order to be re-elected. It's going to happen imo. Complaining about it is a nice way to pass time but in the end it won't matter and no one will care.

I'm sorry.....

but I find it laughable that I am reading so many comments on here abou resigining our OWN FA....as if these players are on the verge of something special....lol....

THIS is when you make you're FA a PRIORTY....

When you have JUST been to a CHAMPIONSHIP game and lost....

When you have been to the PLAYOFFS 3 straight years...and are @ least making it to the Divisional RD.....

You might resign you're own FA when you just completed you're first PLAYOFF victory after a drought...

But to want to RESIGN all your FA when you have just had 4 straight losing seasons....sounds ludicrious to me....

but maybe you guys are more in touch with Ireland than I am....i'm not a fan....

to each his own...

120Tackles For a 4-3 MLB Is Average!!

Any Free Agent MLB!! Can Get You 120+ Tackles!! Even Moving K.Burnett Inside!!

How Many Impact Plays Did K.Dansby Make?

A Impact Play! Is A Sack! A INT! A Fumble!!

That Is Without Counting!! Drive Stopping Plays!! Making A Critical Stop!! During The Game!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Read What Everyone Says!

I Just Hope Some Comprehend What I Say!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

R.Maualuga got 120 Tackles! And Is A Free Agent!!

He Will Cost Less Than $5Mil!!

A Rookie Te'o! Will Give You 120+ Tackles A Game!! And About 5 Ints! And Will Only Cost About $2-3 Mil A Year, For The NEXT 4 YEARS!!

Many Ways To Fix/Replacing Dansby!

Like They're Is Many Ways To Fix The Wr Problem!!

Who was The Leading Tackler This Year?

Look at The Great B.Belichek!! He Took Mayo at #10!! How Did That Workout?

The Pats Defense Is Finally Starting To Resemble The Defense From The SB wins!!

And They Didn't Have Great DE's Either!!

Also once the local unions get involved it's all but a done deal. They will push hard to create jobs. It's going to be really tough for proponents to get their point heard when their point hurts economic growth in a down economy. No one in Dade will care if tourists have to pay an extra dollar for their hotel stay. Most who are complaining are fans who are mad at Ross because the teaam stinks, in the big picture they don't have a vote in this.

If I am Ireland, I am calling the Cardinals and inquiring about the services of Larry Fitzgerald.

Kris,

If we could sign Brandon Albert I would let Jake Long walk. Actually I say target Albert and Levitre in fa, screw the wr's, we can get younger, cheaper, and at least nearly as good ones in the draft.

Yesterday's Swan,

Stop acting like you're the most important person on this blog. You're not even the most important lesbian on this blog, ok?

Kris,

Agreed. Resigning All Your Free Agents Is A Little Crazy!!

But 3-5 Of The Key Free Agents, Yes!!

You Know Guys That On The Open Market Will Start On Any Team!! And Are 1 Of The Top 3-5 At Their Position!! On The Free Agent Market!!

Jake
S.Smith
R.Starks
Hartline

These 4 Are The Only REAL PRIORITY FOR IRELAND!!

But Guys Like

Bush
M&M
Fasano
Clemons
McDaniel
Gardner

All Those Guys Are Not A Priority!!

Agreed!!

Kris, agreed. I'm looking for playmakers/game changers. Bush is the only one on that list who creates mismatches and is consistent in making dynamic plays. He is the only one on that list that other teams actually game plan for.

And Sean Smith is a joke as a #1. Imo #2 is even stretching it. The fact that Patterson came in and in one week was playing just as good as Smith was all.I needed to see.

How did you find out I was lesbian? LOL...

Phony78,

Who gives a s h i t what you "needed to see". Youre just a blind homer nimrod anyways! LOL...

So Dashi you're saying we should replace our 120 taackle mlb with another guy that can do.the same. I know you hate Dansby but this doesn't make sense.

You keep going on and on about Dansby man! Lol The guy isn't going anywhere so why are you wasting your time. Hes hardly the problem on this team.

Jake - Lots of injuries piling up, poor performace this year and will still want a ton of $$.
S.Smith - Averages 1 pick per year - enough said
R.Starks - This guy we need to resign!!!
Hartline - Similar to Smith - Averages 1 TD per year

I'm not saying don't resign those guys...all are servicable and in Long's case, there is a lot of upside if he can regain his prior form, but don't waste excessive salary on them.

DC (from earlier),

You're changing the argument. Armando's post says there is ANOTHER reason to sign FAs, namely to fill a renovated stadium. I don't buy it. I don't have the numbers but did more people go to Tampa games this year because they signed VJax to a big contract? Did more people go to Bills games because they signed Mario Williams?

I don't believe that fills stadiums. I believe it's a myth. People go to support a winning team. Understand I'm not against signing FAs (as your post tried to allude) but when it becomes about trying to focus on bringing the fans out, rather than improving the product on the field, I believe that's when mistakes happen.

And DC, you used the Pats as an example of a team that uses FA to improve their team. When have the Pats ever signed a guy to the contract that VJax just signed or that Mario Williams just signed. The use FA to COMPLEMENT what they do in the draft and that's what we should be doing here.

LOL...............

Sean Smith would be my priority if we were picking players for a pickup game in the park.

Making a low ranked LT with massive injury problems one of the highest paid olinemen in the league is exactly the thing I would expect the Dolphins to do. Im hoping for better planning. Martin is going to be fine at LT, certainly wont be worse than Jake the turnstile, and we couldnuse the money for players who actually effect the game and play a full season. Jake Long will never be what he once was, stop wishing and hoping! ;)

LOL...

I have to agree with Kris, there is very few our FAs I would resign at the price they want. Perhaps Bush and Hartline would be the only two (depending on how expensive it gets).

Fasano? For what? Smith? See ya later! Clemmons? Back-up. Starks? Nice player but I think we can accomplish what we want other ways.

Every dollar you spend on a player is a dollar you can't spend on an upgrade. That's the opportunity cost of spending in FA. I hope Ireland will be smart and selective how he spends his money. I look at guys like Cook with the Titans, Byrd with the Bills and Jennings from GB and think of how they'd upgrade this team.

Craig(I)M Always Right and Phony78 are here. Bow down to thier supreme unsupreme babble everyone.

Dont you know how important they think they are? LOL....

So Dashi you're saying we should replace our 120 taackle mlb with another guy that can do.the same. I know you hate Dansby but this doesn't make sense.

Phins78,

I think what Dashi is saying...

You can replace our 120 taclke mlb with another guy that can do the same, but a lot cheaper.

I could be wrong, but looking at stats from around the league, it certainly appears to be true.

Craig(I)M Always Right and Phony78,

How are you love girls doing today? LOL....

The only FAs I consider bringing back are
Hartline,
Fasano,
Starks,
Clemons
and maybe Long if he takes a hometown discount. I would let the rest walk.

YG,

Not sure why I'm even bothering to acknowledge you. Last I checked it's not YOUR blog. Pretty clear you're not here to talk football but rather to pick fights and ram your opinions down people throats.

Guess what? We're not interested. Hope you have a good day!

Craig not disagreeing entirely just want to point something out. You know how every year theCowboys and Eagles are going to the super bowl according to espn? Thy are teams that make big offseason moves, it gets reported on daily, fans get excited and buy tickets.

I agree that is obviously not the way to build a team but I disagree that a big offseason won't sell more tickets. It's a catch 22.

And Buffalo can't sell more tickets, they sell out a lot I believe.

Craig(I)M Always Right and Phony78 are here. Now if only Marooned in Toronto would show up, then we would have the "3 Lemon jackpot" n the Vegas slot machine! LOL...

Please do not sign Martellus Bennett. He is a product of a good QB. That's why he was average with Romo and good with Eli. We need a TE that makes us better not the other way around

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO SIGN ANY FREE AGENT ON DO:PINS?

GOOD LUCK TO ALL FREE AGENTS LEAVING DOLPHINS CAUSE NO OTHER TEAM WANTS YOU.

LONG 9 MILLION
DANBY 7 MILLION
GARAGE MACHANIC 3 MILLION............

NEXT YEAR...
LONG 7.25 PER HJOUR WORKING AT SUB-WAY
DANSBY 10.25 PER HOUR WORKING AT WAL=MART
GARAGE MACHANIC WORKING AT JIFFY-LUBE 8.25 PER HOUR

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE FREE AGENTS.

(BUFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Phins78,

There are Bills games that don't make it on local television because they don't sell out on time or they just make it in under the deadline. The fans in Buffalo have become very disenchanted with their losing.

Bucs were said by MANY last year to be the BIG winners in FA last year by adding VJax and the guard from NO. How did that translate to the win column? Two more wins? Not good enough.....Not saying VJax isn't a good player. I am saying, spending BIG in FA guarantees NOTHING, including putting fans in the seats.

Craig(I)M Always Right,

Ohhh..... Then why when one's minding one's own business and not picking a fight with you, its ok when youre doing the picking. Sucks doeant idiot? LOL...

It's alright to resign Starks for slightly more than he's worth and Hartline for a #2 WR contract (cause otherwise he'll get that elsewhere) but do NOT sign Bush or Long to a contract for more than they're worth. A solid contract fine but nothing more and certainly less if they'll accept it. The rest, Clemons, Fasano, Smith and all can walk. Fasano would be a good backup TE for ok money and Smith for ok money but he is going to go to the highest bidder and some team on the cusp of the playoffs will sign him for more than he's worth. Watch Indy grab him too lol the dynamic duo reuniting

Craig I just checked. Buffalo was 21st in attendance, we were 27th. Im shocked because it seems like Rich stadium is always sold out.

I dont see Starks as any sort of priority, but if he's willing to resign cheaply, then yes.

Otherwise, no one's overpaying for a 10yr vet. I do believe Stark also realizes this. He knows exactly where he is at this point in his career(10th season).

Phins78,

Re: Earlier comments on stadium.

I agree that the political leaders will do what is in thier bests interess as well as in the best interests of their backers. They will do what they want as usual. No disagreement there.

What I do disagree with (and this is NOT personal) is that the government should not, in general, be in the business in picking economic winners and losers. Whether its wind power mandates or supporting the local billionaire sports owner, this is usually bad policy and bad economics.

Anyway, I agree a lot with your comments about the football team.

Phins78,

I could be wrong but I think capacity is bigger in Buffalo. Someone will correct me but I believe capacity is 80,000 in Buffalo, therefore harder to sell out. They have GREAT fans but they've become tired of waiting for this team to get better. There were VERY few Bills fans who said, 'That's it. Now that they've signed Williams, I'm definitely going to a game next year'. They're like everybody else. They just want their team to win.

Point taken signal. Now Dashi, have you researched this? Who's your man? Sorry if I missed it in one of your posts. Im assuming you know of available mlbs in free agency who would be cheaper. Dont youndare tell me you want to use a high pick on a MLB! :)

Craig, I ignored that part of Mando's post because I agree, it's the stupidest thing I've ever read in my life. Bringing in FAs to improve attendance (what a joke).

And I am also not into the huge Mario Williams (or worse Fat Albert Haynesworth) signings. But here I'm confident in Ireland's ability not to overspend indiscriminately. While sometimes you DO need to pay for talent you need (a la Chicago with Julius Peppers), the goal is just not to overspend on a player who does not effectively fill the void you had. From your 12:30-31 posts, sounds like we're on the same wavelength on what the team needs to do.

My thing is in order to make the jump we need to make, to get out of this rut of mediocrity, we need playmakers. And I don't expect that Jeff Ireland can do it in 1 draft alone. And if he JUST relies on the draft, I don't think (IMO) we'll get enough playmakers to get much better. And if that happens I don't see Ireland getting another year. And if the GM is fired, then this whole stability thing might be jeopardized. And the very LAST thing I want is ANOTHER round of organizational changes.

So I'd prefer to see us making significant progress in 2013.

Phins78,

Dashi wants T'eo. He hammered us over the head for it for weeks. Even told us it was going to improve our pass rush.

I'm still waiting for him to explain that one.

Guys your missing the most important thing about free agency,#1) That being, will said free agent want to come here.
And #2 We still have Ireland picking up the "Grocery's"
Lreland so far is giving us Hamburger meat and we want Prime-Rib.

Good post MiamiD20. I like your take, makes perfect sense so look for us to do the opposite.

Oh God really? Ive been hearing the only thing he will be good for is leadership. Some are calling him the next Tebow. Too small at the point of attack and can't stop big backs.

lol

DC @12:46pm,

Totally agree. From everything I've heard from Philbin, Ireland and even Ross to date, FA will be used to ADD to this team also. It's a nice situation to be in, having $46 mil available to spend (third most in the league, I believe). As someone has said, there's no guarantee FAs will want to come here but I'd rather have the money than be in the situation we were in last year (no money to spend). No GM can do it ONLY through the draft. It's why you see a team like the Pats and a guy like Brandon Lloyd or previously the RB from the Bengals.

It's not the BEST way to build a team but can certainly be used to aid the roster.

Ross can suck a d i c k if he thinks he can get public funding for this pathetic Dolphins team, when was the last time they won a playoff game? Please put a winning product on the field then worry about getting tax payers to fund the upgrades.

Other teams are going to try to resign their good free agents for the most part. Those that do actually become free agents may have many teams trying to sign them. If an elite free agent WR becomes a FA, then it's not unreasonable that teams such as the Seahawks, 49ers, Patriots, Texans, and others may want an elite WR as well.

The Dolphin will be very lucky to get an elite WR in FA. They might get Jennings due to his age and long injury history. He might could keep Egnew company on the inactive list.

Something tells me the tide is turning with how we handle FAs and the draft. Ireland lined himself up for this offseason and (hopefully) learned from his mistakes. It's just a matter if FAs want to come here. Give us a top WR and we might be able to pull it off next season. Wilson was a safety in college so he might pan out back there in place of Clemons. As long as our OL doesn't fall apart we may surprise the NFL world next season

Mando is right, Mando is right. Wow, Mando for GM? Its very easy to sit behind word processor and bang out names without doing your homework. Jeffery isnt going to change his stripes, like tigers dont change theirs. Its about saving money with Ross, was when he got here, will be the same when he leaves. Sadly, the Dolphins will spend the 40-60 mil. on middle of the road players, and draft the superstars, if they can find them, which as you know, lately, as been few and far between.

clue cheap ross said he would fund 1/2 and all of the overages.

and the stupid tourists will $$$$ the other 1/2.
lol

Clue, if Ross sucked a d i c k, then would you give him the funding?

MAGEE, ARE YOU A BUTCHER?
IF YOU ARE GOOD FOR YOU,A LEAST YOU HAVE A JOB UNLIKE SOME HERE THAT POST 24/7

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

sign all whities,
the team will respond with smarts and decent football play.
decent play = wiiiiiiiiinz.
lol

2 watt, Ross better fund 99.9% if he wants upgrades to the stadium. Yea lets upgrade the stadium, so that when its empty (which is always) it really looks full.

Just like Jeff Loria jiffed the Miami Dade residents, Ross is looking to jiff the Broward County residents.

After the Marlins fiasco, no one is giving loser Ross a handout.

DC, the answer to your question is yes. LOL

Who cares about the stadium or the logo when the team stinks? Only Stephen Ross!

Hasnt Ross ripped off the fans enough already?

whens the opener?
.
btw, how long will it f'n take 4 the upgrades. where the f r they gona lose games,
i mean play.?.
.
miramar high school field should hold the phans.
lol

clue, miami gardens is dead county.

I wouldnt trust that cheap SOB Ross with a dime.
