Does the family side of Ireland change your perspective?

I saw a side of Jeff Ireland over the weekend that I wasn't familiar with. I saw him put his youngest girl Annie on his shoulders like dads put their kids on their shoulders to see parades. I saw his pride in his only boy Riley. I listened to Rachel Ireland, the Dolphins general manager's wife, talk of how they met and how Ireland cared for her when she was in an auto accident soon after they met.

He asked her to marry him three months after they met. As I write in my column today, she was in a wheelchair when he proposed.

My column is not about the relationship Ireland and his wife share, although it does touch on it. That relationship seems strong from the outside. It has to be.

Because my column is about the Ireland twins and the struggles and fight and fallout that caused by the autism that attacked them when they were two years old.

MandoMarinoIreland
I spent time with the Irelands (and Dan Marino as you can see in the photo) during this weekend's Dan Marino Foundation Walkabout for Autism at Sun Life Stadium. Ireland told me he's on the road for the Dolphins 150 to 175 days per year -- scouting, at bowls, at league meetings, at the combine, at player workouts. I've dealt with that side of Jeff Ireland. The General Manager side.

I hadn't dealt too often with the guy I saw over the weekend. The father. The husband. The guy who got a call when he was at the East-West Shrine game from his wife telling him to come home.

Three of the children had Influenza A. Annie had a fever of 105 and it wasn't coming down. Two others were throwing up. The nanny had gone home for the evening and Rachel couldn't get a hold of anyone to watch the other kids.

It was time to head to the hospital so Rachel called Ireland, who was in Tampa for the game.

"I was taking them all the kids with me so I said by the time I get them all packed up and out the door, you need to be driving across Alligator Alley and come get the other kids so they don’t have to spend the night in the hospital with me," Rachel said. "And he came home.”

What else is a father to do, right?

“That doesn’t happen very often so when she makes that call, it’s a big deal," Ireland told me. "She can balance a lot. We sit there an argue for a second and then I realize it’s serious and I come."

We don't think of football players as people. They are guys on a TV screen that are chiseled and strong and fast. We don't often see their human side behind that helmet.

We don't think of coaches or general managers as people. They're the guys pacing the sideline or making trades from behind a curtain. And all we seem to care is if they get results. We don't much care if their children are sick, or their marriage is strong, or their twins twins have autism.

Or do we.

Look, many of you are very hard on Ireland. Your reasons for that, I assume, have to do with his work in bringing a winner to the Dolphins. But some of the criticism  is personal and cruel.

So now that you've gotten to know the Ireland family better are you as likely or less likely to take shots at the Miami GM?

Remember, professional accountability and criticism is inbounds. But can you agree with me, personal cracks are out of bounds?

ODDI-ASSI WILL BE BACK AS SOON AS HE CAN THINK OF A NEW TROLL NAME TO SIGN IN ON. LOL...

ODDI-ASSI,

LETS TALK "HOTTIES"..... LOL...

OdaShe

If those guys are still on the team 2-3 years from now, that is guaranteed to mean we still are an awful team.

Try unpligging your orafices and thinking just a wee bit before making another comment.

go finssssss

Clay is a tweener, the problem is he is not between anything usefull enough. He is just short of being good enough at anything.

Thomas has game for about 5 quarters per season. He has at most one more season to show much more.

Wilson is a maybe - he has a way to go but he has been a step short a little too often.

clay should be a fb type guy who starts out in backfield and can create mismatch

Mando sounds like your in love with Irland all of the sudden. Getting married?

I don't understand these people that say that Ireland "found Wake" like he saw something that nobody else did.

We got Wake after in a bidding war after TWO years of dominating the CFL. The Giants drafted Wake...Ireland just got him here 3 years later.

dustybottom,

Clay doesnt block like a "true lead fb". On passing downs you empty your backfield, most times the defense counters with the blitz. This forces you rb to have to stay in to pass protect.

Still Clay isnt a consistent enough pass catcher to where any OC with half a brain wants to specifically create a play designed around him.

Matt,

The same people who say "Ireland found Wake", also say Ireland should only be judged by the last 2 drafts.

I know...., wtf? LOL...

Mando looks like he is about to squeal like a pig in that photo.. and NO it does NOT change my opinion on what an incompetent GM Ireland is . He must have some good dirt on Steve Ross...

I picture most of you as morbidly obese slobs with atrocious taste in food, drink, and music and the intellectual heft of a spoon.

Few of you even 'manscape,' I'm sure. Ugh.

Ireland people want to give Ireland credit for everything that went right in these past 5 seasons. But, only want to give him credit for whats gone wrong, only the last 2 seasons.

WTF? LOL...

The new coaching staff knows what they have now and what they want. It will be interesting to see who THEY think is valuable or not worth keeping.

The more changes we see this offseason, the worse of a reflection on Ireland it will be, and of course visa versa.

I'm glad things appear to be heading in the right direction with Ireland. I was willing to give Ireland another chance after the draft and seeing the Phins on Hard knocks. He's done a good job in spite of Sparano being the head coach.

yesterday they lined him up back there 2 years ago and it worked nicely, not saying do it a lot

dusty,

HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR WIEF ?

Two big things need to change this season for me to have any faith in Philbin.

1. The team has to start out fast. The fins have started out too slow for too many years now.

2. The team has to win more of the close games, it seems we have 5 very close games and lose 4 of them.

about 16 years ago and then we had u aloco

It is really tough to judge Ireland based on his time with Sparano and Parcells. Parcells brought Sparano to the fins thinking of the 80s, when you played smash mouth football. Parcells and Sparano had a plan to build the Dolphins in their image. Their plan was to build the lines, have a QB that was a care taker, and `to run the ball. They were looking to build a team to win games 13 to 9.

Ireland's hands were tied. Now that he has Philbin we will see if he can build a team that is built for this century, a fast pased offense that throws the ball. It is going to take Ireland time to build this team in Philbin's image. As far as I am concerned Ireland is going to need at least 3 years with Philbin. He deserves a chance to build this team on his own without Parcells.

OUR GARAGE MANAGER HAS FIVE YEARS ON THE JOB AND WE R PROUDLY LIVING IN THE............. C E L L A R;;;;;;;;;;;

DUSTY,,ARE YOU REALLY MARRIED ?

HOW MANY KIDS ?

ORLANDO,
THREE YEARS WITH PHILBIN ,THAT MAKES IT 8 YEARS ON THE JOB ....

ONLY IN FL ,THAT WE ALLOW THE FAILED ,LEADS .....

Aloco,

Have you ever put a rabbit in a blender?

aloco your the only one we know of

Do the math.

32 teams.

Easily 20 GM's are worse than Ireland.

We are in good shape.

CAN SOME SONGS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HUNGARIAN CRAZE CAMPUS OF GORDONS FISH STICKS.

THREE, FOUR, EIGHTEEN INDIVIDUAL GOATS BORN OF MOZART AND FIG JAM.

THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE ENDORPHINS IS PROFOUND. SIX YEARS EARLIER, LUCILLE BALL SCREAMED FOR SPAGHETTI AND NOW CENTRAL EUROPE IS FILLED WITH MAYONNAISE.

I guess some of you want the GM from

Jets
Bills
Chiefs
Jax
raiders
browns
ect ect ect

I WOULD HIRE YG ,CRAIG M AS CO GM FOR OUR DOLPHINS ....

DUSTY ,I WOULD HIRE AS HELPER FOR BOTH ....

peabody yes would love dorsey from kc, jax new gm is da man, jets and browns also got new gms so whos to say. but id take all those over ireland except oaklands

I honestly think that if the combination of Philbin and Ireland had been together in 2008 (from the beggining), the Dolphins would have drafted Matt Ryan instead of Jake Long. I think that Parcells and Sparano forced Ireland's hand and made him draft Long. That one move would have changed everyone's opinion of Ireland. That is why I want to see what type of team Ireland can build with Philbin at the helm. I want to see what kind of pieces Ireland is going to put around Tannehill this year.

ORLANDO,

D.THOMAS
AGNEW ............................THESE ARE SAMPLE FOR THE PIECES OUR GARAGE MANAGER INTEND TO PUT AROUND TANNEHILL THIS YEAR.......

Why are people still complaining about not getting Matt Choke Ryan?

1-4 in the playoffs even though surrounded by a stellar team

Blows a 17-0 lead AT HOME even with the best receever corp in the league?

Oh, that is who we need? He was damn lucky to win that first playoff game.

soren ryans gave up the 28 points after they lead 17-0?

dusty, Ryan was shut out in the second half with all world receivers and the best te ever. Weak, Don't make excuses, he is a pssy athlete.

We have to give Ireland time. For the first time since Marino the fins took a QB in the first round. My guess is that Ireland spends some of his early picks on offensive playmakers this year. He will probably also sign an offensive playmaker in FA (Wallace or Bowe). If Tannehill is the real deal and stays healthy the fins will contend for a playoff spot this year.

The trifecta was flawed because of the philosophy that Parcells brought to the fins. He handcuffed the fins for 5 years.

I find it totally illogical to be pro Ryan and anti Ireland. Neither have done nearly enough.

I know, some of you need someone to hate on.

so soren your saying yes ryan gave up 28 points after they lead 17-0

DUST,WITH ALL RESPECT...MATT RYAN TOOK THE FALCONS FRON THE CELLAR TO THE PLAYOFFS IN THE LAST THREE YEARS ,WHILE WE ,THE DOLPHINS LIVING AND SOAKED WITH MISERY IN THE CELLAR ........

dusty, evade reality, if you want.

A qb that gets shut out at home in the playoffs with White, Jones and Gonzalez is an inept, choke, QB.

Some of you talk about Ryan like he is Peyton, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Ben...

He is nowhere close and never will be. Ever. He would have only been worse on our team with worse players and worse coaches around him.

I like Tanne better already.

How about giving the Falcon's defense a little blame. Ryan does not play defense and the Niners are a pretty stout defensive team. Sometimes the othere team is just better.

I would rather be in the position the Falcons have been in of winning 10 + games every year and making the playoffs. Unfortunately, with the fins in the Ryan era we have always been looking forward to the draft in early December.

Meanwhile, rookie Kap with less than one full season of experience comes back from a 17 pt deficit to beat Matt on his own turf. Oh yeah, Matt Ryan is wonderful.

sounds like u are , u cant even answer the question

dusty, we are talking qb's, not defenses. so I guess you would be happy with a qb that can't score for a whole half at home in the playoffs. Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez,Turner and you can't score??? That is what some of you wish we had?

I wish for better things.

If any of you think Matt Ryan would have been any good on our team with no playmakers you are crazy. You'd all have been screaming bust for two years now. We'd have traded him to the Jets by now.

And you know it.

G'nite to all.

I guess someone should tell the rest of the Falcons they weren't needed for their playoff run because Ryan got them there all by himself. What a stupid statement...

Ryan seems OK, maybe a LITTLE better than average to me.

But......who thinks he was worth the #1 overall pick? I don't think ANYONE in the top 5 of that draft was worth their slot.

Matt Ryan would have us in the playoffs every year.

Matt Ryan would have us in the playoffs every year.

Matt Ryan would have won us 3 rings already. Yes Yes Sqwaaak!

Real Dolphins don't give a dam about a gm's personal family. Getting elite playmakers and winning with them is all that matters in evaluating a gm. This man is just a bad gm that needs to be replaced.

Matty "Ice" is the best young QB in the game today and has set records for most wins ever in his 1st 4 years. He is likely on his way to a HOF career if he remains healthy. A better QB then Marino so far IMO.

Matt Ryan's father is God. It's a well known fact.

Our team will be just fine give them the offseason then make judgement

We have our quarterback now let him grow

5 consecutive losing seasons is "fine".

Matty Ice has the pretties vagyna of any QB in the game today. No dispute.

Hey homer go become a jaguar fan

There is talk of voting Matty Icicle into the HOF even before he retires.
