Growing consensus: Egnew won't make it

I was a guest on the Joe Rose Show this morning on local radio station WQAM when the conversation turned to the tight end position. And Rose, a former Dolphins tight end, said the Dolphins need to sign or draft someone to play the position this offseason because in part ...

"I don't believe Michael Egnew is going to make it," Rose said.

And I wasn't surprised he said it because, I'm hearing that a lot from folks I'm talking to lately.

I've talked to two players the past three weeks that told me they don't see Egnew, a rookie last year, making it out of training camp next year.

"He should have been cut this year," one told me.

That doesn't account for Egnew learning to block and learning his assignments better and getting stronger and faster this offseason. But another player I spoke with said none of that will ultimately matter with the former third round draft pick.

"He's a p---y," the second player said. "He's not a football player."

It does not end there. I talked to Former Dolphins OLB/DE Kim Bokamper about Egnew the week before the season ended. He also said he does not believe the kid will ever be a factor. He's seen enough.

"You look at his body, look at his hips, he's built strange," Bokamper said. "He's not built like an NFL tight end. I had to cover tight ends and deal with tight ends my entire career and I never saw one built like that."

All of that sits atop the fact that Egnew made offensive coordinator Mike Sherman so disgusted in training camp that he told the kid during one offense meeting, "If I were the general manager, I'd cut you."

Egnew was inactive the entire season, except for the final two weeks when injuries (specifically to Charles Clay and Davone Bess) opened up enough open spots on the gameday roster to allow him to be active.

He played some early on in the final home game against Buffalo, but didn't catch a pass. He played less in the season-finale against New England the following week, getting mostly garbage-time snaps late in the fourth quarter.

Not exactly improvement.

Obviously, the Dolphins likely will allow Egnew to come to the offseason conditioning program, offseason camps and training camp to see if he shows anything.

But the growing consensus of him being on the team when the 2013 opens?

Not likely.

Just WTF was Ireland smoking when he drafted this guy??? Seriously hes suppose to be super scout boy and couldnt reconize the guy obvious flaws. I mean I watch the guy on Hard Knocks and he seemed a liitle strange in the 3 episodes I seen him him. When I write strange I relly mean hes seems a little retarded sorry if I sound like a jerk just writing the truth

Yeah I don't see it working out for this kid either. Might be a bit early to give up on him completely but as time goes alone I become less and less encourage he's going to have success. Looks like another wasted pick.

The number of wasted picks by this franchise the last few years have sure added up. Two seconds for Marshall, a second on Beck, a second on Henne, a second on White, a first on Davis, a second on Smith and a now a 3rd on Egnew. Not a great track record.

Usually when people get all googly eye over a chick I.E. Tannehill wife I go and check out the chick and shes just ok. I gotta admit Mccaron GF is a beast, my heart just melts looking into her gorgeous eyes

"Craig M, thats the reason why you shouldnt have your QB playing RB as well. Running QB simply cant with stand the punishment NFL defenders deliver on a consistant basis. Im sure Pat White head is still ringing from that hit the Steelers DB gave him."

Clue,

I don't understand why people at the NFL level haven't grasped this yet. If Michael Vick couldn't get it done as a running QB then why were people expecting it to work for RG3???

The Redskins traded their 2013 & 2014 first round picks to take a guy to run the spread option??? That's insane. It doesn't matter how great of an athlete a guy is or how fast he is, an NFL QB will not last long if he tries to make his living running the football.

I hope Pete Carroll is taking notes...

Ireland with ANOTHER bust draft pick, what else is new?

Another high draft pick WASTED! Thanks Jeff Ireland!!! Idiot.

Egnew = Another Irescum bust

Irescum has MORE busts then Dolly Parton!!

WHDP, blame that on Shanahan because Griffin was far from just a running QB. His appeal was that he was also an excellent pocket passer and his speed should've become a weapon in the NFl when things broke down. This is all on Shanahan for not bringing him along the right way.

He still has a job???

Craig,

Agreed. Must of us understand that good teams that compete year in & year out are built through the draft but if you don't draft well then how do you rebuild???

All I know is that Ireland is not going anywhere so people can rant & rave all they want that he needs to go but unless this team completely implodes Ross isn't getting rid of him. It sounds to me like Ross is set on a course of going with Ireland & Philbin unless something drastic happens.

Is Ireland clueless or what? How does he still have a job? ROSS, DO SOMETHING!!

Going back the CNNSI draft prospect rankings, I notice Justin Hunter is ranked 55th and Matt Elam is rankied 54th. Again, not likely that either of these guys will be around at that part of the draft put I like both of these guys.

Anybody know much about Quinton Patton from Louisana Tech. WR and his numbers seem to be pretty good. 17th ranked player in the listing.

This guy was the 3rd rated tight end coming off the board, so what was everybody smoking.

Ross must be in a coma.

How in the hell does Ireland still have a job??? He's being hailed for picking Tannehill (still not proven) when everyone knows he HAD to pick Tannehill. What did he have to lose? He had to hang his hat on something or else he would have been canned anyways. It was a no brainer. But all of these other high draft busts is ridiculous. This guy is a joke.

Mark,

I couldn't agree more. We're talking about a HC who is so desperate to win that he took WAY too much risk with RG3. It was just a matter of time before something like this happened.

The same thing will happen to Kaepernick & Wilson if they continue to run the football as much as they do.

Back to the previous blog post for just a moment:

Armando, as I'm sure you know there was one other HUGE factor in Saban quitting the Dolphins so soon and it had absolutely nothing to do with the draft, cap issues, or anything else football-related.

Saban's wife absolutely HATED living in South Florida. It wasn't exactly a secret.

He certainly wasn't going to mention that in his presser but I think everyone in the media (including you) had to be aware of it.

wow, it took Jeffery a full season to see that egenew is not an NFL TE. WOW, another one for the "Jeffer".
And now the Jeffer gets ready for another draft.
Maybe Sherman, and Philpin will be there reminding Jeffery what kind of players he wants.

I'm out for the day. Any new posts in my name are not from me.

Sherman and Philbin need to find a place for this guy....can't they just split him in the slot in 5 wide sets....

I hate "UN-NAMED" sources giving quotes...

what are we the NY jets now....

Philbin....get a handle on you're team....

Growing consensus: Ireland didnt make it

WHDPs,

It's the best course of action right now. Unless Philbin has a problem working with Ireland and I've seen no signs of that right now.

A new GM just puts Philbin on a shorter leash and possibly closer to being shown the door. I don't believe that's best for the team right now.

What I don't get is how all these people can feel this way about Egnew and yet Ireland still drafts the guy, and I assume Philbin signed off on him. The guy we should have landed and traded up for if necessary was the TE Allen, who ended up in Indy. He wousl have taken care of all our needs at the position. Dumb!!

THIRD ROUND. Wow. Just wow.

Draft pick is 50/50

He's a P**SY!!

haha, wow. I think that is the nail in the coffin. No coming back from that one ...

Ross picked Tannehill(google it if you doubt it) but it was a bad pick anyway.

Mike Mayock rated him the No.5 tight end coming out of college last year.

http://www.fieldgulls.com/2012/2/14/2798584/mike-mayocks-positional-rankings-tight-ends

Ireland is setting records for most draft busts ever by a GM.....

You wonder why all our playmakers are 4s, 5s and 6s? Probably because nearly every 2nd and 3rd round picks that this GM has made have been busts.

We had a head coach for 4 years who could not last more than 1 year as an OC for the lowly Jets. That's how far back we were set. 4 years of pure, unadulterated garbage.

Mark...

Much like the TROLL that is impostering my name @ 11:27 (1st post)....the P**SY is the guy who is scared to put his NAME by his own comments....

Egnew may need work...but un-named sources are locker room cancers....

If you say it...sign your name to it....

Ross should hire Kiper or Mayock to do the Dolphin draft.

Perusing some of the Egnew draft scouting sites for last draft shows that several outlets had serious concerns regarding his NFL ability. This appears to be another example of Ireland arrogance in thinking he was smarter than everyone else. Really scary heading into a draft with so much potential to positively change the Fins and having little confidence in Ireland to do it right.

Phil, what playmakers?

I keep going back to the listings on CNNSI, sorry guys.....

He's got Fauria the TE from UCLA, listed at 149 and his top QB is Tyler Wilson from Arkansas at 35.

This guy has REALLY gone out on a limb with some of his selections.

As I told you 5 days ago and will continue reminding you, RGIII was a victim of a violent crime. He completely tore both his ACL and LCL (even worse) *4 weeks ago* in the Baltimore game. Then his coach forced him--like a rented race horse--to play with a Dan Marino leg brace, something that has never been done in history (one week later!!!).

His ACL and LCL were *completely* torn BEFORE the playoff game even started, quite obviously, and literally the only thing the entire game that was holding the lower part of his leg perpendicular to the ground was the Dan Marino leg brace.

The grotesque thing we saw at the end--which was simply the leg brace finally failing--was GUARANTEED to happen.

So I want Shannahan fired and prosecuted.

It's True... thats only because Dolphins fans would call a 7th round conditional pick a bust if they didn't make the pro bowl : )

Nice quote

roflmao,
there's gonna be a ton more 28-0's from this bunch of chiz.
lol

Kris, you are right but the fact that someone has this opinion about the kid's intestinal fortitude (RIP Gorilla Monsoon)says enough about his chances. P***sies can't play in the NFL.

So why don't we just make Mike Sherman the GM and fire Ireland now. lol, Sherm knew the kid was garbage 2 weeks into training camp.

And Jeff had to keep him on the roster because he didn't want to look worse. People were already questioning his ability as a gm. He couldn't cut a third round pick in training camp and not take a lot of heat for it.

My God how many more mistakes does this guy have to make before some people start holding him accountable? He's now keeping players on the roster that will never make it in the NFL because he needs to save face. Is that what savvy business people do Ross?

"I have a bunch of 4's, 5's , and' 6's,,,hahahaha".

j phil, coy
with a roster full of manure he wins 7.
lol

Total knee re-construction for RGIII. Poor bugger!!

Great way to treat your investment of FOUR high draft picks Shanahan....you total PUTZ!!!.....and all the guy can do is point fingers and say 'the doctors said it was OK'. 'The QB said he could play'. Friggin' idiot!!

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

Around 75% of third round picks are out of the NFL within two years.

Bad pick? Yes. Unusual? Not at all.

(even though I know few here are interested in actual facts)

who cleared him?, it ain't shanny.
lol

"Mike Mayock rated him the No.5 tight end coming out of college last year."

Who made Mike Mayock the authority on drafting players??? Has he ever had a job working for an NFL team??? And if he did which teams was he in-charge of scouting &/or making a decision where his job was on the line. Most of the people at ESPN & NFL.com who make these 'mock draft' are talking heads. Mel Kiper??? Todd McShay??? Bucky Brooks??? Come on.

Charlie Casserly & Bill Polian are the only two guys on either network that have been in the trenches that I can give credence to.

YG where are you? Lets get back into this debate as to whether RG3 should have been in the game. Hahahaha

Everyone in the world including the coach and doctor could see he was seriously injured and couldn't play. They left him in and now the guy will never be the same. Oh well, at least we had one year to watch him play great.

Now it's on to watching him become a shell of his former self. And all because some players and coaches still think it's 1950 and you should play through everything. F*&^ing sad. Too bad the kid didn't have more responsible adults around him watching out for his well being instead of worrying about their own glory.

it must have been the same jax axx that did not clear brees.
lol

Agree Mark...

@ some point to many people have this perception of Egnew...including Sherman to some degree....so it most likely is true....

but still....

We need to find a way to get this kid on the feild....

This is another serious indictment on Ireland if he is cut next season...we traded Marshall away for WHAT????

Phins78, in all fairness AP came back from a severe knee injury, so its possible for RG3 to regain form he just has to work as hard as AP did to come back

Phins78 is 100% dead on balls accurate. 100% correct. I'm irate.

clue,this is bob3's 3rd, ap's was his 1st.

So there was NO way with TWO third round picks, that Ireland couldn't have traded up to get Allen the TE that went to Indy? Seriously? I think it's clear to EVERYONE that this guy is a much better player. Good size, good hands, can get open and maybe the one thing that Egnew obviously can't do....BLOCK!

For those of you who havent heard the rumors, Egnew was a Philbin pick, now whether he works out or not is yet to be seen, if you people are expecting to go 7 for 7 in the draft, you are just plain out of your mind. Im not sure if all fans are like Dolphins fans, but this is the reason I watch the game at a jets bar, Id rather be around the moronic jets fans than some of these dolphins fans. Bottom line, miami improved 1 game from last year while getting younger, and getting a year under tannehills belt. If you bought into the playoff hype early in the season, well that's just your fault. This team is in position to improve greatly this offseason, whether that happens or not we will find out, but being angry at a 3rd round pick from last years draft and firing the gm over it is amazing considering some of our past draft history. People on here praised Parcells until they found out he was leaving. Slow plodding lineman, big slow possession receivers. I remember reading how Ernest Wilford was going to make us forget about Chris Chambers in this very blog, from the same people here wishing to determine Irelands fate. Im not an Ireland supporter, I just remember Jon Avery being the next Barry Sanders, and Yatil Green helping Marino make it to the super bowl, and Ted Ginns family catching tds from Late Blooming 30 year old Mormon John Beck. Henne fit the Parcells prototype at qb and we all know Pat White was parcells pick as well. So I'll judge Ireland off of his picks, not Philbins, not Parcells, and I'll stack them up and compare them to how past GMs like Mueller, Spielmann, and Jimmy did.

Craig M and the others who recognize that RGIII was a victim of criminal negligence and that Shanahan is *the* stupidest mammal currently walking the earth are 100% correct.

RGIII's ACL *and* LCL (even worse) were 100% torn in half *before* the game started. This injury happened--quite obviously--in the Baltimore game 4 weeks earlier.

Watching that grotesque injury--which was on the level of a Joe Theisman horror show--proves as much, to any person with an IQ higher than about 75.

RG3 can always take himself out. Ain't the coaches fault, maybe you can fault the Dr, but at the end of the day you have a responsibility for yourself. Spare me this PC babing bs, ya'll acting like a bunch of Egnews. This was going to happen sooner or later anyway, dude is to small to play QB that way. Good thing the Redskins dug a deep whole to get him!

j phil wasn't at the sr bowl, he wasn't signed yet, it was the axxhole irelands pix. stop the horse chiz.
lol

Craig,

Maybe it's the best course of action & maybe it isn't...Only time will tell. All I'm saying is that I don't believe Ross has Ireland on the 'hot seat.'

You just don't trade away your best WR & your best CB unless you KNOW that the owner has your back. If it was truly about the number of wins this season then Ireland would never have gotten rid of these guys.

Phins 78....

I somewhat disagreed with you're take as well a few days back....but yesterday I evolved my opinion to what I believe will be my final stance on the RG3 injury....

and I agree with you....this is 1,000% on Shanny....

I go back even further....RG3 should NOT have played after the b'more game...not for @ least 3-4 weeks....

instead...Shanny and his crack medical staff had him on te practice feild just 2 days later showing off for the press and playing MIND GAMES with the Cleveland Browns.....Shameful to say the least....

They KNEW this kid was hurt bad...and they took advantage of his Athleticisim amd Bavado for a ONE YEAR playoff run....

It may not be criminal...but it definetly lacks Morals....

we traded Marshall away for WHAT????

Posted by: Kris | January 09, 2013 at 11:48 AM

---------------------------------

For two third round picks.

The first was used on Olivier Vernon, who had a solid rookie year and has much upside.

The second pick is in this year's draft.

The Egnew picks was NOT the selection acquired from Chicago. Not sure why people continue repeating this fallacy.
