Growing consensus: Egnew won't make it

I was a guest on the Joe Rose Show this morning on local radio station WQAM when the conversation turned to the tight end position. And Rose, a former Dolphins tight end, said the Dolphins need to sign or draft someone to play the position this offseason because in part ...

"I don't believe Michael Egnew is going to make it," Rose said.

And I wasn't surprised he said it because, I'm hearing that a lot from folks I'm talking to lately.

I've talked to two players the past three weeks that told me they don't see Egnew, a rookie last year, making it out of training camp next year.

"He should have been cut this year," one told me.

That doesn't account for Egnew learning to block and learning his assignments better and getting stronger and faster this offseason. But another player I spoke with said none of that will ultimately matter with the former third round draft pick.

"He's a p---y," the second player said. "He's not a football player."

It does not end there. I talked to Former Dolphins OLB/DE Kim Bokamper about Egnew the week before the season ended. He also said he does not believe the kid will ever be a factor. He's seen enough.

"You look at his body, look at his hips, he's built strange," Bokamper said. "He's not built like an NFL tight end. I had to cover tight ends and deal with tight ends my entire career and I never saw one built like that."

All of that sits atop the fact that Egnew made offensive coordinator Mike Sherman so disgusted in training camp that he told the kid during one offense meeting, "If I were the general manager, I'd cut you."

Egnew was inactive the entire season, except for the final two weeks when injuries (specifically to Charles Clay and Davone Bess) opened up enough open spots on the gameday roster to allow him to be active.

He played some early on in the final home game against Buffalo, but didn't catch a pass. He played less in the season-finale against New England the following week, getting mostly garbage-time snaps late in the fourth quarter.

Not exactly improvement.

Obviously, the Dolphins likely will allow Egnew to come to the offseason conditioning program, offseason camps and training camp to see if he shows anything.

But the growing consensus of him being on the team when the 2013 opens?

Not likely.

The only names that stand out there are Demarco Murray, Stevan Ridley, and Leonard Hankerson.

Daniel Thomas was our pick.

To the people who lambaste the Dolphins for Thomas being a bad pick please be objective. Out of 33 picks that year 3 of them have made a name for themselves in the NFL. So I will concede that year. On the same token most of the players are still in the NFL and trying to make a name for themselves 2 years later so the 75% are out in 2 years just doesn't hold water.

Bottom line, if Egnew doesn't make the team in his second season it was a bad pick. 3rd round picks should at least make it into their second season. 3rd round picks are the guys you may have to grooom, but certainly not the guys you should be cutting after they rode the bench for 1 year only.

Andy NJ,

I highly doubt Mingo, Dion Jordan, and Eric Fisher go inside the of the top 10.

Walter Camp has eric Fisher(LT) going to us @ #12. I still wouldnt even want him there. Central Michigan? Yes he dominated on that "small level" but how many premium pass ruhers did he face? How many premium d-linemen did he have to block in the run game? Ditto.

As Mingo and Dion Jordan, Werner is rated higher than both. Werner has better chance of going inside of top 10 than these two.

As for T'eo, Monday night's nat' championship game, probably dropped him from top ten. I always thought he was about 6 to 8 before the game. You have him going at #8. His stock feel at least 3 spots Monday night. That means out of top 10.

Teo maybe available at #12, but the way he wiffed at Bama's big rb's coming to thru hole Monday, Im not sure I would want to take him right now. Right now I would take Teo about #25, then pray it was the right decision.

Does anyone know what kind of season this kid Mark Barron had??? I did not watch a lot of TB games...

I have no idea what percentage of 3rd rounders stick around.

I do know that very few make any real impact over time. Most of the names are in the "who?" category pretty quickly.

Yesterdays Gone,

It's just hypothetical. I just considered team needs and draft value. I don't sit and watch OT in college but I hear Eric Fisher is the real deal. I don't want any sort if linemen in the first round. Miami needs a playmaker on one side or the other.

wdhp I completely agree with your last paragraph.

And it's possible that they walked in, the doc said take the brace off I want to look at it, and rg3 said no im fine I just wanted to come in here for an adjustment to the brace. Taking the brace off and putting it back on would have cost him too many snaps and he probably didn't want to be replaced.

ABSOLUTELY I agree that the real grown men around him failed this young man. He has heart and was trying to play the good soldier, someone should have realized it wasn't worth it and told him so. Oh well, hopefully it doesn't completely destroy his career because I would like to watch him play at full speed again some day. Either way, he will be set for the rest of his life so no worries there for him.

YG,

You do know that Joe Staley played at Central Michigan right??? You know the team that Brian Kelly coached before he took the job at Cincinati???

I think the Niners are pretty happy with him as their LT.

Vernon was the guy they got with the Chicago pick. The Bears had originally acquired that pick in a previous trade with the Chargers.

Phins78,

I don't believe that this injury will destroy his career BUT I believe that his coaches have to limit him from trying to make the spectacular plays with his legs. If Shanahan doesn't change the way that RG3 is used & doesn't make him more of a pocket passer then his career will be a short one.

On Te'o!

Sure, Fool!!

Leave The Meth Alone!!

Dashi has been off the Te'o Train since We Won The 6th Game!! Early December!!

And Zack Would've Looked Like Te'o!! GOING against The Bama O'LINE!!

BUT SURE!! CRAIG YOU KNOW EVERYTHING!!

Don't Get Your Panties In A Bunch When The Fins Draft Te'o with the #12 Overall Pick!!

Plus, Dashi has already Said How I Will Replace Dansby!! Without Drafting A LB!!

But Since You Want To Run Your Mouth!! Who Was The First To Say Our GUARDS SUCK??

If You Don't Even Watch Dolphin Games!! What Makes You Think You Even Watch CFB!! And The C Doesn't stand For Canadian!!

No Wonder you are OK with The Bills Picking A .500 Coach!!

Deflating,,,,draft talk,,,,,taking the life out of me! lol, I know you guys have fun with it , I'm not trying to take that away from you. I just don't see the fun in it. We talk about what players we want for months and then they don't take them and everyone gets mad. And the fact that I haven't actually sat down and studied hours and hours of tape to compare each player makes me feel like I'm just throwing darts with a blind fold on.

And I realize trying to start a conversation for the millionth time about Jeff Irelands ability as a gm is probably even more annoying! (I actually didn't start it though so don't hold that against me )

Vernon was the guy they got with the Chicago pick. The Bears had originally acquired that pick in a previous trade with the Chargers.

Mapquest,

Oh....That's how we got the higher pick from the Bears. Thanks for the clarification.

If we made the pick at #12, and Bjeorn Werner were available, I think that I would pull the trigger. Reason being:

When JJ Watt was coming out, no one saw him being the nfl beast he's ow become. Everyone thought he could be good but knowone, including the Texans saw this coming.

JJ Watts looked pretty Bjoern Wernerish coming out of college. As a matter of fact, the Texans took him at #11. If Werner is available at "#12", guess what?

Was Watt kind of overlooked because he was a "white DE"? Possibly. Same could happen to Werner. Just saying, we should take a long hard look if Werner's there at #12. He could be another "WHITE" JJ Watts. If he's even close, we've gotten something "pretty special".

"If Shanahan doesn't change the way that RG3 is used & doesn't make him more of a pocket passer then his career will be a short one."

Are you saying you think Shanny should try to make him more of a pocket passer?

Phins, agreed about the draft talk. Ultimately, it's totally worthless if we are brutally honest here. We WILL be completely wrong about most of these guys and our knowledge base is very limited. Only someone VERY delusional would believe otherwise.

But it is harmless fun.

please, you think ireland is the worst GM??
there are PLENTY who are/were worse!!!
jets GM, busts in the 1st round, bringing in tebow.
oakland jamarcus russel 1st overall
cincy, busts at qb in the top 2 overall picks, twice.
former dolphins gm's, 1st round busts, yatil green & ted ginn

i could go on and on.

If anyone saw JJ Watt being the beast he's now become. Noway he falls to #11 and is taken by the Texans. Dont hold your nuts on Bjoern Werner because he's a "white boy" DE.

I would not feel disappointed if he were available at #12 and Ireland took him there. Sometimes white guys like him blossom in the nfl because they dont come in having a feeling of "entitlement".

Why in heaven's name does it take this franchise so long to give up on players that obviously are awful? Like the receiver with the impossible name we had...can't remember..they just sit on these terrible players forever.

Can you say...Gibril Wilson? lol

I know I never said he was the WORST, all though I know some in here have. I just think he's middle of the pack, just like our team.

And I also can not get over the fact that he can't find te or wr talent yet that is exactly what we need this year. I'm hoping Craig is right and Joe will be pulling the strings for the most part.

I think we all thought Jared Odrick was going to be our JJ Watt for whatever reason he just isnt. If we draft Werner will he be a JJ Watt or a Jared Odrick??

YG,

Watt was overlooked b/c he was a white DE??? He was overlooked b/c he only played two years at Wisconsin after he dropped out of school at Central Michigan. Some guys get overlooked b/c they simply develop later than others. A perfect example would be Cameron Wake who is not white btw. Not exactly sure why you've even brought up race....

You've posted many dumb things on here but this is BY FAR the dumbest.

Shanny should now make RG3 a "pocket passer"? Can we now name you "genius of the month"?

Duh.............. RG3 is having "RECONSTRUCTIVE KNEE SURGERY". Its out of Shanahan's hand, RG3 is now a pocket passer whether anyone likes it or not, the pistol offense would not be more popgun than pistol now that RG3's knee mostly will never be the same.

Remember Marino once the knee injuries racked up and he had to begin wearing the brace?

Or at the very least I hope he's learned his lesson and moved on from the teachings of Parcells. But I'm still incredibly worried about his track record in finding offensive play makers. In a league built around the offense and play makers in that offense being the main ingredient, I just don't feel comfy with Jeff being in charge there.

Phins, agreed about the draft talk. Ultimately, it's totally worthless if we are brutally honest here. We WILL be completely wrong about most of these guys and our knowledge base is very limited. Only someone VERY delusional would believe otherwise.

Mapquest,

Agreed. VERY delusional indeed.

ever more evidence that FIreland is the wrong guy to be making those picks again in April.

I would not feel disappointed if he were available at #12 and Ireland took him there. Sometimes white guys like him blossom in the nfl because they dont come in having a feeling of "entitlement".

YG,

What???

Bad example for that post. Wilson was cut a year after they signed him so they didn't stick with him.

But you are correct about others. Most notable and recent being cement shoes Wallace. Wasted way too much time on him. Moore is a great special teamer but can't catch the ball unless he's wide open. Not sure if we should be taking up a receiver spot for a guy who only plays special teams when we need wrs desperately. Time to cut the chord there imo.

First Sparano & now our assistant GM??? Now that's funny!!!

Please take them all!!!

Never draft a white LB. Never. This is the NFL.

Darryl Bush.
T'eo "Notre Dame" high school level football

Will D Thomas make the team next year?

WHDP,

I guess because its your own work, so youre never biased towards it, but per capita posts. You by a HUGE MARGIN make far dumber post than me. Take it to the bank son.

Im not being vengeful, just being objective. Your critisism of my Watt/Werner post is just your own "uninformed opinion". I was only making an observation that race does play into what coplor players are picked most at certain positions.

If you have a blind eye to this, then son you need to turn on the lights. Race definitely plays into who plays where. Simply because its a stereotype that white guys arent as athletic as black guys.

Now go home and learn something something. Youve been school. Class out baby.

Ireland is setting records for most draft busts ever by a GM.....

Posted by: Its True | January 09, 2013 at 11:31 AM

True---have we forgotten Matt Miller? Now that's a train wreck. Give Jeffie one more chance with Philbin's input and we;ll be fine.

WHDP,

Also just because something doesnt make sense to you. It doesnt mean that it doesnt make sense period. Some here have more than 2 bb's to bounce things off of inside of thier domes. LOL...

what a huge waste of a pick egnew was, we could of had hilton!

If Werner is available at 12 we take him no questions about it. I watch FSU all the time. He has physical tools and the motor of a Watt. Smart guy too, the type of player we need to stop Brady. I'm guessing he's long gone though. It's a copy cat league and people will want their JJ Watt.

So with that said, if RG3 will truly be a pocket passer. His numbers are going to plummet imo.

Part of the reason he is able to make some of these throws to wide open receivers, why they're so wide open to begin with, is because the threat of RG3 taking off to run.

There goes the linebacker who has to mirror the qb. He can now drop into coverage. And I wish I could find the numbers, he has thrown for a lot of yards after avoiding the rush and scrambling out of the pocket to reset. If his ability to get away from the rush and scramble out of the pocket to buy more time is in jeopardy as well I don't know. I mean the kid grew up playing ball a certain way and now at 23 has to relearn a whole new way of playing? Hopefully he just has a full recovery.

"Now go home and learn something something. Youve been school. Class out baby."

YG,

Yeah...Clearly I've 'been school' from person who failed out of elementary school.

Guys, Egnew was a 1st Team All-American/All-Big 12 player. Finalist for the John Mackey Award. Not like he never did anything. WHAT HAPPENED? Is this really all about blocking? If so, then that's 100% on Ireland. He SHOULD HAVE KNOWN the history of Missouri TEs.

Or was this a miscommunication b/w HC and GM? Maybe Philbin said, "get me a pass-catching TE," and so Ireland only looked at that without the other intangibles needed in the NFL. And then when Philbin saw how raw he was he couldn't use him.

But my thing is can this guy run routes and catch passes? If you why can't they find a place for him? Make a RB block or use a 2 TE set. Unless they (coaches) are saying he's not worth the effort.

Either way, it's a very bad look. 1-and-done draft picks is NOT how this team will become elite. Personally, I disagree with you guys saying give him a chance, another year, etc. I say cut the cord now, don't waste any time to find out what we already know, and draft or sign a FA TE and move on.

dustybottom,

TY Hilton is 5'9 183lbs. I would like to see where the Hilton discussion 3-4yrs from now when the NFL's "bigboy hits" have taken thier toll on his small frail body.

5'9 183lb wr's almost never last longterm under the physical nfl rigors.

yup dc, was so easy to see also, scary

INteresting choices there Andy. Althought those are both guys that would surely merit consideration for a trade up back into the first round in the 20s somewhere.

My backup choice was Barkevious Mingo.

ok yesterday ill remind u of that when egnew is working at checkers and hilton and still catching deep balls

NEMO,

Absolutely correct. Werner reminds me of the collegiate JJ Watt. I believe in the least he could become another Trace Armstrong. I never could understand why the hell Wanstaddt traded him to the Bears for that wr that came in and did absolutely nothing. I forget his name.

Anyway, I do believe Werner can come in and at least be anothe Trace Arstrong. All Armstrong did was quietly rack up multiple double digit sack seasons.

Here's your guy Rex. I pray the Jets hire this guy. If he works under Ireland he must be in over his head

Mando,
Every athlete with promise is used by everyone they come in contact with from age 10 forward including thier parents.
If the guy reached his high water mark in college so be it.
Why cast aspersions on the guy? Other than getting him to kill himself what will that accomplish?

Te'o is white???

And on the Saban thing, I hope you guys didn't buy that drivel he was spewing. He didn't KNOW how NFL teams acquired talent? REALLY? Wasn't he a DC (in Cleveland)? But he didn't know how the Draft works?

YEAH RIGHT! Believe that sh*t if y'all want. I ain't buying it. He thought he was God's gift to coaching, and realized he's just a guppy in the ocean, and not able to compete with sharks. He GAVE UP! Point blank. Went the easy route, college, where MONEY and SCHOOL PRESTIGE is the most important thing to acquire talent, and really thinks he's doing something because he can win there.

Nicky, there'll ALWAYS be a stain on your name. So what if you're the best of the worst. You'll NEVER be the best of the best. Enjoy being the big fish in the puddle. No one cares.

DC,

With the dolphins, Egnew's issue may now be two-fold, picking up developing blocking to0 slowly and learning offense too slowly.

When a teammate calls you a puss, its a courage issue. Being a courage issue, that points to his unwillingness in taking on blocks. Meaning he's avoiding it like "he's terribly afraid". Hence, lacking in courage, equals "puss". Learning the wco may also play a major role too.

Look, African Americans were slaves for hundreds of years. They were basically bred to be athletes. They worked in fields, carrying heavy loads for 16 hours a day. Slave owners only kept the biggest, fastest, strongest slaves and then they mated creating bigger faster and stronger children.

When they tried to escape (quit being a slave) they didn't just walk to the end of the driveway and say "f&&k this job I quit"! They had to run through STATES,,,,hundreds and thousands of miles being chased through the mud and bushes, jumping over obstacles, sleeping outside with nothing. They didn't have anyone standing on the side handing them cups of water and cheering them on. Those were the first tri athletes!

Of course they're better than us at the more physical sports, the jumping, the running etc. They were made that way.

ME?! I'm Italian/Irish descent. I probably have half a liver from my ancestors alcohol abuse and I'm going to D up a black guy in basketball? Yeah, not happening.

The black athlete seems to be superior to the white athlete in the major sports (Football/Basketball). The numbers don't lie. And they aren't picked because of their skin color, they are picked because they are the best of the best.

YG, yes TY is that small but with offseason conditioning and as the years progress he'll put on weight. At FIU TY Hilton was a TD machine. PR, KR, as a WR no matter where he lined up he was a TD machine, He simply was a playmaker that Ireland missed out on for Egcrap. The sad thing is the guy is right in Ireland backyard.

Im sure there would be many Dolphin players that would have labeled Ted Ginn a puss too. We did! LOL...

YG, the Wr your refering to is Marty Booker, and Trace was getting up there in age and a FA the next season, Wanny didnt want to lose him for nothing

Agreed DC, they need to move on.

Dusty, funny thing is Egnew is a lot better off financially than most of it just because his name was called in the third round. He's probably sitting with a cool mill in the bank just by practicing last year. Now, he better not spend it!

That's good work Armando.... So would this player considered a BUST ? I feel the same way about Tannehill half way through the season, he shows no sign of improvement ## look no further than the final game against the Patriots ___

Phins78 @ 1:58 your absoulutely right.

Ginn is and always will be a pus! Thats why hes 5th string on the 49ers.

Does it really matter which 3rd rounder it was for Egnew?

We needed a TE in a bad way...

Not only did Ireland figure our new TE could come out of round three...

He thought he could come out of Missouri.

We need to be looking toward the draft and the player we need to look at is GAVIN ESCOBAR. He is the next jimmy grahmn. I would be agressive and use one of our second round picks on this kid. I don,t care if we reach for this kid. Tannehill needs a playmaking tight end. I am also sick and tired of hearing that we should sign Dustin Keller in free agency. Can someone tell me when did he become the next great tight end in football. People go to youtube and check out escobar.

I wouldnt take it this far. African-Americans were not bred to be athletes. Not allowed to have an education, they were degated to hard physical labor. Hard Physical labor is pretty much the same as "working out".

With hard physical labor, almost anyone gets physicall more imposing. It has zero to do with breeding. But everything to do with exulting one's physical bodies to the rigors of "strenuous physical labor".

Its not purely genetics. Although some of us are born genetically superior/inferior in a wide range of different areas regardless of race, creed, or color.
