I was a guest on the Joe Rose Show this morning on local radio station WQAM when the conversation turned to the tight end position. And Rose, a former Dolphins tight end, said the Dolphins need to sign or draft someone to play the position this offseason because in part ...
"I don't believe Michael Egnew is going to make it," Rose said.
And I wasn't surprised he said it because, I'm hearing that a lot from folks I'm talking to lately.
I've talked to two players the past three weeks that told me they don't see Egnew, a rookie last year, making it out of training camp next year.
"He should have been cut this year," one told me.
That doesn't account for Egnew learning to block and learning his assignments better and getting stronger and faster this offseason. But another player I spoke with said none of that will ultimately matter with the former third round draft pick.
"He's a p---y," the second player said. "He's not a football player."
It does not end there. I talked to Former Dolphins OLB/DE Kim Bokamper about Egnew the week before the season ended. He also said he does not believe the kid will ever be a factor. He's seen enough.
"You look at his body, look at his hips, he's built strange," Bokamper said. "He's not built like an NFL tight end. I had to cover tight ends and deal with tight ends my entire career and I never saw one built like that."
All of that sits atop the fact that Egnew made offensive coordinator Mike Sherman so disgusted in training camp that he told the kid during one offense meeting, "If I were the general manager, I'd cut you."
Egnew was inactive the entire season, except for the final two weeks when injuries (specifically to Charles Clay and Davone Bess) opened up enough open spots on the gameday roster to allow him to be active.
He played some early on in the final home game against Buffalo, but didn't catch a pass. He played less in the season-finale against New England the following week, getting mostly garbage-time snaps late in the fourth quarter.
Not exactly improvement.
Obviously, the Dolphins likely will allow Egnew to come to the offseason conditioning program, offseason camps and training camp to see if he shows anything.
But the growing consensus of him being on the team when the 2013 opens?
Not likely.

YG,
My point in siting the Patriots is because they are pretty much a dynasty and a great team and even they have misses. You can do this with every team. This is a QB league and Belichick hit the jackpot with Brady. They can have a bad pick and it does not really matter.
My point is fins fans complain about Clyde Gates (4th round pick), Jimmy Wilson (7th round), and Egnew (3rd round pick). I think that Ireland's biggest failure is not landing that franchise QB early. I think a lot of blame goes on Parcells who had his mind in the 80s. He wanted Long over Ryan, and wanted a game manager like Henne so that he could play smash mouth football. I think that Ireland's legacy is going to be tied to Tannehill. If T-Hill is that franchise QB, then Ireland's picks will start looking better and like with the Pats we will give him a pass for his misses.

I'd also like to hear more of why Egnew isn't going to make it. What is the reason(s)? Saying "he's a pu&&y" isn't good enough. Let's hear some specifics. Say I'm in denial but I'm not buying it.

Multiple playmakers are needed at the skill position. It would be nice to see Clay develop into one of them but it's hard to say what's going to happen with him. Hartline has the ability to get behind the defender and with someone like Jennings on the other side he becomes more of a threat but who else do they have. Fasano is ok at tight end but isn't a major threat. So, two wide receivers at a minimum in this draft that can spread the field would be nice along with a FA receiver would be even better but I'd like to see Thomas jetissoned and use Bush and Miller or get someone like Bell in the draft who would make Thomas look like Mary Thomas.
Posted by: ProfessorLou | January 09, 2013 at 11:47 PM
Reggie is the only playmaker. Without him this is the worst offense the NFL has ever seen.

"Ross should hire Kiper or Mayock to do the Dolphin draft. Posted by: Finman"
_____________________________________
Which one? Mayock, who had Egnew graded as the 5th best TW, or Kiper, who had Egnew as his 4th best TE?
Egnew had 140 catches his last two years. YOU could have made the same bad move. Certainly, Kiper or Mayock could have based on their grades.
Posted by: Matthew | January 09, 2013 at 11:59 PM
Not exactly true that Bush is the only playmaker on the offense. Hartline got behind defenders several times this season only to have Tannehill overthrow or underthrow him. If Tannheill can improve his accuracy from what it was in college and in his first season in the pros and start hitting guys in stride the offense will perform at a higher level even with the guys they have. He missed a wide open Clay coming over the middle, throwing wide left. Had he hit him in stride Clay could have turned it upfield for a big play because there wasn't anyone close to him. On another play Clay was wide open on the right side of the field and Tannehill throws it high making Clay jump for the ball and he fell to the ground after the catch. Again, he could have placed it where Clay needed it to make some additional yards but he misses high making Clay make a difficult catch.
Hopefully, things will change with experience but you've got to look at things as a whole.

So a Tamarac deputy just killed a 60 year old female after she just shot another elderly female. Thats just as crazy as Ireland drafting a TE from Missouri who can't block or catch.

Walterfootball.com's take on Egnew prior to the draft:
Egnew doesn't look like he has the speed to be a receiving tight end in the NFL. He struggles to get separation from defenders who run well. After making catches, Egnew doesn't have the quickness to get up field, so defenders surround him quickly. He can contribute as a blocker though.
Egnew could be a decent backup to a good tight end in the NFL. If he is paired with a dangerous tight end, he could take advantage of some soft coverage and help move the chains. He should only be a second or third tight end at the next level. He doesn't have the plus skill set with speed and athletic ability to be a starter.
Guss Ireland saw something no one else saw. Again.

I guess there are as many definitions of a Playmaker as there are People. My definition of a Playmaker = Gamechanger. On O, that special type of Player that whenever he touches the ball, can score from any part of the Field. I know Ross shares my view. That's what we want for the Dolphins next Season, another 1 or 2 of those.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 10, 2013 at 03:03 AM
There are some special Players, outside of QB, in this year's Draft. We know they are there. The trick is to get to them.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 10, 2013 at 03:22 AM
In spite of Walter, I believe Egnew competed at a high level in the triple jump, along with RT, in College. I believe, none of you here, much less Walter, can compete with that feat.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 10, 2013 at 03:35 AM
Has Ireland been fired yet?
Posted by: Zonk | January 10, 2013 at 07:44 AM
The guys at Walter must not have watched too much of Egnew at Missou. It wasn't so much that he struggled to gain seperation as much as it was about the way he was being used. He was a tight end lined up as a wide receiver; sometimes in the slot and sometimes on the outside. When he was lined up outside they mostly threw bubble screens to him and expected him to beat defenders down the sideline like they did with Gates in college. When he did run a route he was able to get seperation but there were plenty of times where his qb would make him make a tough catch on a bad throw high and Egnew would take a shot but still hand on to the ball. In addition his vertical and long jumps at the combine were awesome.
Posted by: ProfessorLou | January 10, 2013 at 07:45 AM
I have to say this whole article and topic is awful. A player who will remain anonymous gave me an opinion the guy is a p_**y. So much for class...can't they just say he's not NFL material? You don't catch 90 passes one year and 50 the next year if you are faint of heart in the Big 12. Let's remember the guy is human and has family who read this stuff too.
He has a strange body and not built like a TE..what does that have to do with anything? How many guys in the NFL don't have the prototypical body for their position? Anyone remember ZT? I just want to know if he can run, catch and block. The guy ran a 4.62 40 had 140 catches over 2 years. I look at the guy and say has Sherman put him in position to succeed and utilize what he does well? SMH
Posted by: dadsmithwest | January 10, 2013 at 08:04 AM
If the Dolphins are going to be successful building via the draft, they have to have better outcomes with their selections than this. I understand that not every pick is going to turn out, but 3rd rounders need to at least become decent back-ups. Also, we can't keep addressing the same position year after year. At some point, the position needs to become stabilized so you can focus on other spots. We're like the little Dutch boy plugging the dike with our fingers ... and we're running out of them.
Posted by: ChrisC | January 10, 2013 at 08:04 AM
ChrisC, every year there are more holes in thr dike with Irescum as GM. He cant draft for shyt. If they keep him another year they're better off trading the draft picks for established players.
Posted by: Nat Moore | January 10, 2013 at 08:17 AM
Gates and Egnew = more Irescum busts
Posted by: Zonk | January 10, 2013 at 08:24 AM
Egnew is young he needs a a year or two to grow into himself it seems. Some people just need to hit the weight room harder their rookie year.
Posted by: B33RCA53 | January 10, 2013 at 08:29 AM
Why hasnt Egnew been cut? So Ireland wouldnt look as pathetic as he is?
Posted by: Our Draft Picks Are Useless | January 10, 2013 at 08:29 AM
Furthermore, You don't draft a TE who has 140 catches in 2 years and say we aren't playing the guy because he can't block. Isn't this why there are blocking TE's all over the league? If I were Philbin or Ireland I would be asking WTH? We don't have plays for him to run down the seam that don't require blocking? Which is sorely lacking from this offense.
Maybe Egnew was not motivated from the "what will your children think of you" speech from Sherman and couldn't translate that to the field.
Posted by: dadsmithwest | January 10, 2013 at 08:46 AM
So Sherman and Philbin wanted to cut Egnew but Ireland refused? Figures.

Agree again @ 8:46...ans apologize for messing up you're name @ 8:52...
a coahes job is to figure situations in which players succeed....not continue to tell US and HIM what he can't do....
He can't BLOCK...MESSAGE RECIEVED....
SO what can he do....how does he make this team better...if he isn't then cut bait....but if he CAN....then lets find ot how and get this 3rd rounder on the feild for some serious playing time....
Fasano may be a better blocker....but can his skills @ pass catching really be that superior....
Posted by: Kris | January 10, 2013 at 08:57 AM
And what kind of a teammate would ever say this about a player on their team to anyone outside of the locker room? So spare me this anonymous player source...sounds unreliable and like a cancer on the team.
Posted by: dadsmithwest | January 10, 2013 at 08:57 AM
Kris, one thing is for sure .. the best organizations find plays for the talent they have. It's a lot easier than finding guys to fit a rigid system and asking to be something he's not. You're not going to all of a sudden become a great blocker in the NFL if you couldn't do it in college. You learn enough to get by.
The only thing I can think of why this guy hasn't been used at all is if his heart simply isn't in it and he's collecting a paycheque. It's been known to happen a lot.
Anyways, I've already written the guy off since week 1 last year. If we do end up getting anything out of him, it's a bonus.
TE is high priority for this team in this offseason. Maybe more than WR.

Here's tape of Egnew doing nothing but blocking on the line. You be the judge:

Posted by: ProfessorLou | January 10, 2013 at 09:05 AM
Mark....
I like you're post....
but what dadsmithwest said can not be ignored imo....
140 catches in 2 season's....I don't think he lacks heart...probably know-how....but not heart....
I haven't written him off yet....
This is the same coaching staff that spent the first 12 or 13 games runnin Bush between the tackles....LIKE SPORANO...
Same coaching staff that kept Miller on the bench for MOST of the season....
And the same coaching staff that continued to send Carpenter on to the feild for 45 PLUS yard FG...even AFTER he cost us 2 of our first 5 games....
This coaching staff has some maturing to do....and hopefully that starts this off season....

Egnew is a very close second.
At least all the others actually played and made plays during real games.
I called Egnew out during Hard Knocks back in Aug. there was something in the way he carried himself that I knew he was not a true football guy.
Posted by: NHFINSFAN | January 10, 2013 at 09:21 AM
Kris, I can't disagree with your post. But we still need to go out there and get the best, most athletic TE to work the middle of the field we can. If Egnew mans up and if the coaching staff gets on the ball - then he will still have a role. NE finds a way to get almost 2,000 yards each year between their TEs. We can too.
