« Stephen Ross gives his state of the Dolphins | Main | Saban finally admits messing up on Drew Brees »

My take on Ross, Wallace, Jennings, Bowe

As you know, Stephen Ross spoke on the state of the team Monday. And I came away from the talk absolutely certain that the Dolphins have some sort of plan for 2013 -- because the owner mentioned this plan half-a-dozen times.

But when I asked him what that plan is, I was disappointed to hear the answer Ross gave.

No, as I write in my column in The Miami Herald today, I didn't intend to hear a blow-by-blow of what the Fins are about to do. I was, however, hoping for something beyond, "Win."

Frankly, I left Monday's talk not knowing if the Dolphins -- a team with approximately $46.8 million in salary cap space this offseason -- are expecting to be a big player in free agency or not.

In one breath, Ross said he'll pay whatever it takes to get a player. In the next breath he said free agency is not the answer. Sooo, the message was a little garbled.

I guess I'm just a poor immigrant that no understandy Inglich goot.

After writing my column Monday evening, I heard from a Dolphins employe in the know who told me the Dolphins will absolutely dive into free agency and happily pay top dollar for top-tier talent in free agency. He told me that is what Ross meant to say.

I hope that is true.

We'll see.

I hope the Dolphins pick the best deep-threat receiver in free agency and sign him. Yes, that to me would be Mike Wallace. (And yes, he drops some). But I like the idea of Miami not needing 14-play drives every time on offense to score touchdowns. This team needs a 50-, 60- and 75-yard bomb over the top of the defense every once in a while.

Explosive plays on offense make me write happy.

Most great teams have them.

The Dolphins have very few.

Mando unhappy with few.

Anyway, I suppose a guy like Greg Jennings is also a possibility, but while fans have a growing fascination with him, I'm not quite sure he's the deep threat Miami needs. Don't get me wrong, he's very good. If Miami cannot land Wallace, he's he next best answer.

If Miami lands Wallace and Jennings ... awesome.

But he would not be my priority. He'd be No. 2. He's older than Wallace by three years. He's going to be 30 next season. He's been injured. He's declined his last two years. And he'll be very expensive. So I see some red flags.

Yes, Wallace has some flags, too. But they blur to me as he's running a 4.3 past defenders. To me, he needs to be the UFA priority once free agency opens, assuming he's on the market.

Many of you also like Dwayne Bowe. Pass.

He's not a deep threat. He's also older than Wallace. He kind of reminds me of Brandon Marshall. And that didn't get the Dolphins in the playoffs.

"This is really the first time I've really gotten involved. I was handed a situation that, one, I was kind of painted to the wall. If Parcells left that was my fault. If Miami loss that was my fault. And I have a lot of respect for Bill. But I didn't put together that organization. I also felt I should learn a little bit before making any moves. Sometimes making a move for the sake of making a move is sometimes the worst move you can make. So want to sit back and really assess the situation, which I was able to do. So it was good from that standpoint."

I don't know what that means.

That last paragraph is hilarious! What the hell does any of that even mean? Ross is such an idiot.

===================================

You and Armando struggle with your comprehension skills...........and Ross is the idiot?

ROTFLMAO, thats rich. It's pretty simple. Ross bought the team and inherited a mess. The biggest headcase in Parcells', pulling totally incompetent moves. What makes it even worse, Parcells got away with alot of it because of some brief successes he managed 30 freaking years ago.

Come on, Parcells brought in SpOrano and Dan Hennings-LOL! He drafted Pat White, thinking he was going to fool the rest of the NFL with the gimmicky Wild Cat - ROTFLMFAO! His and Hennings swelled up egos, combined for a large vat of Senility! They actually believed they were going to be "Trend Setters". Forget the FACT that they were **TRYING** to use an offense that was very successful...........back in the 1940's!

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Forgive me for I digress. Ross' point in that last paragraph spoke to the fact that he bought this team and inherited a geritol and Prune Juice swilling **MESS** of ultra egos and SENILITY!

You and Armando are obviously reaching and nitpicking because you don't understand the manner in which Ross has set out to transform this team.

You guys act like Ross is going to publish all the details and strategies of which the FO will pursue. What team does that? What FO tips it's hand by passing out "Booklets" or "Press Releases" outlining all their inside info and inner workings?

(I shouldn't have to tell you this, but don't answer those last two questions. They were rhetorical-lol)

And this guy actually called Ross an idot-lol?

Kudos for asking "The Question" Armando!

Armando "Bucked Up" and asked the Tough(and obvious)question, while all the others were just sucking up! You the Man Mando!
========================

BUT, as far as Ross and Free Agency, you're misleading people and stirring the pot.

Ross simply said what Philbin has been saying since he arrived here. Ross, Philbin, Ireland and the entire FO are presenting a united front.

They want to build a perrenial contender, MAINLY through the draft. This is, after all, how all the Good Teams are doing it.

As far as Free Agency, they said they will use any and all means necessary to IMPROVE this team. Free Agency won't be their primary resource(obviously), but if they can use it to land some playmakers, they're obviously "All In".

I don't understand what part of this is confusing you and your............"Minions-LOL". It's textbook stuff............Sheesh ;)

Build through the draft, utilize Free Agency when it's beneficial. You know, like the Packers, Patriots and Steelers do.

Nuff Said ALREADY!

NEXT!

(Shessh-ROTFLMFAO!!!!)

I agree totally on the WR's Mando.

I like Wallace, I just wish he was more aggressive when going up for the ball.

Either way, Wallace and/or Jennings and I'd be happy. Then of course I would try and draft a WR **SOMETIME BEFORE** the 6th and 7th rounds.

I agree on Bowe too.........PASS!!!!

Free agency is not the answer. Good teams build using the draft. As to a deep threat, Miami will no doubt draft one in the first 3 rounds.

You want speed, Armandito? Draft Markus Wheaton or DeAndre Hopkins. Cheaper, better route runners than Mike Wallace is.

Hey mr Ross , did you see the 80,000 fans in sun life stadium last night? Where we're your dolphins? Out of the playoffs again!!!!

This year's crop of College WRs is being underappreciated in regards to deep speed and YAC. Some explosive Players coming out from there. Guaranteed.

The same focus that was used last year in selecting a QB is being used this year in selecting a WR. Bet your boots on it.

Why do people on this blog continue to insist, year after year, that the FO detail their offseason plans to the media? Ross may be a dufus, but at least the man understands supply and demand. I would recommend that others on this blog pick up an economics book and read up on it.

Sorry, YG, but Manti Te'o looked horrible last night. Out of my picture.

It has been a terrible Season for LV. But Luck comes in Cycles. Everybody knows that.

Also, there are some beastly DEs coming out this year and we might take a shot at one of them with our 2nd or 3rd pick.

Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more Jeff Ireland!

Its been a venerable who's who of incompetence since the day Wayne sold the organizational soul to the Devil (Jimmie Johnson). Jimmie led the plethora of failed coaches, FO personel & overall poor performance to our doorstep. Its been one failing after another since he set foot in the Davie facility. Eventhough he was the best of the bad lot we've had beyond The Shula Years - he failed miserably & QUIT on us, paving the way for the Wanny's, Cameron's, and pentultimate scumbags Parcells & Saban. Ross appears beyond helplessly clueless. Ireland is the remaining afterbirth of Parcells & hasn't found a single star in 4 drafts (thats hard to do with darts). Tannehill is getting an awful lot of praise & trust bestowed upon a guy that looks a lot more like David Woodley (RIP) than Dan Marino. What a Hot steaming mess...

Armando the corporate business culture never states for the world to know what their thinking. Moreover this time of year the truth is hard to find from any NFL GM or owner on what substantive direction is intended. You laid out the issues yourself on going to free agency. It may work but why pay huge bucks for a declining value. Well the Dolphins just may have to go to free agency for a TE and a receiver to contribute right away. They just don't want to publicly state that the bank is open for a free agent and his agent to take as they will.

Well you may be right but as a fan I hope your wrong!

Odinseye thank u .....well put.........its nice to hear some solidlogic comin out stead of this constant fire Ireland jibberish.........bunch a monkey hear monkey repeat ....hatersexit anywheres .....the jets need a new mascot fireman ed jest moved to volunteers ..........go join them ...I say everytime...........

Mike Wallace all the way!!

I hope this guy doesn't want 10 million a year!!!

This team is not ready for free agent receivers. Free agents add to a foundation that is already built. I don't see a football team yet. I see a bunch of scared football players. They laid down in New England. The laid down in Buffalo. They were beat in their own house 35-3 by a team that was for sure weaker than they were.
You could argue that we did beat some playoff teams. We did but a free agent isn't going to get us to the super bowl next year. A better draft and some foundation players will get us there in 5 years. Pissing money away on bandaids when you need stitches is stupid.
Draft some key position players this year. Maybe spice it up with one free agent. I would prefer a tight end. And spend the rest on stadium improvements a parking. Where we end up next year would determine where I would spend my money. If we are tick away from the playoffs or lose in the first round, I might be inclined to spend more money on big names. Other than that just keep building through the draft.

wallace is like a ted ginn go get jennings then draft austin bring bush back draft a de and CB in the second sure up the oline in 3rd

I don't mind the "building through the draft" approach, but has our GM shown the ability to be successful in that arena the last 3-4 years? Outside of Wake (who wasn't even a draft pick), who has been added to the roster in the last 3 years that has "star" written all over them? The approach may be valid but I worry we don't have the FO team (GM in particular) to pull it off.

I agree TE'O played awful last night. Not sure he even belongs in the first round. He looked like he was unwilling to take on Lacy and make contact. That's not good for a MLB in any case.

I'll take either of those 2 WR's. Can't focus on just one guy and expect to get him in FA or the draft. That's setting up the team for a lose lose situation. NOT worried about how much they spend on Wallace either. So what if they spend 10 mill on the guy. You pay the guy or he signs with someone else.

sparano is .....fired

SPARANO IS FIRED........

HE HAD ONLY ONE YEAR CONTRACT .

THE PIZZA MAN IS FIRED....

Some Marrone hired in Buffalo. We'll see.

Oscar, I am coming down to Florida so that we can purchase carpet remnants together. I would also enjoy jumping on a trampoline with you and listening to Menudo albums while wearing lederhosen.

I shall deplane at Opa-Locka International Airport at 3 and will tke the monorail.

I remember Tiberius C. Some decrepit old man.

Armando failed to mention that you must now PAY to see content (including his column) in the Miami Herald.

No offense my friend, but no way.

That's another piece of bad news for Us, ALoco.

Sparano fired..WHY? Parcells thought that guy was HC material and surely he could take a lesser job as the OC and do well (deep sarcasm). Poor Sparano was going to clean up the Jets mistakes and never got the chance. It's not fair to be judged by the play of Sancheeze.

Mando, very easy offseason plan (specialty in Miami):

1 - Shore up the oline. Give Long 10mil/yr because then no one (but a speed rusher) will get to the QB's blind side. Then, work on the right side because it's not a football year in Miami if we don't tinker with the right side of the line. We need to give up ZERO sacks, and until that happens, we need to focus on linemen.

2 - Shore up the defensive line. In a passing league, in a division with the Patriots, Miami's #1 defensive priority needs to be...stopping the run! Not getting to the QB. Not defending the pass. Nope, stop the run. Because we'll see Adrian Peterson one day, so we need to be ready.

3 - Churn the bottom of the roster. You're only as good as your 53rd best player. So churn like you're making butter. Let's not worry about 1-10 (why would we do that, we have Jake Long). Let's worry about 40-50 (hell, Marlon Moore makes so many special teams tackles, he's invaluable. It would be dumb to lose him to say, a #1 WR).

And there you go, 3 easy steps to...another mediocre Season.

Let's see if the Dolphins have learned anything over the last 5 years or if they are destined to make the same mistakes over and over again.

EVEN WITH WALLACE WE NEED ANOTHER WIDEOUT..

HARTLINE WON't GET IT DONE.

SO WE SHOULD GET JENNINGS OR DRAFT ONE EARLY.

ALABAMA COULD GIVE THE DOLPHINS A RUN IF NOT BEAT THEM ALL TOGETHER.

I HATE SABAN

If he was on a 1 year contract he wouldn't be fired, his contract would have expired.

Get a clue people!

I think we can get our deep threat in the draft. I would go for jennings. He'll be cheaper than wallace and probably would fit philbin's offense better.

Man, I hope the new logo doesn't suck. I prefer the older Dolphins logo to the one they have now anyway. The new Dolphin looks a little too happy.

I think Odin did a fine job of holding down the night shift.

DC sounds angry this AM.

We do need at least one lineman though with significant value, DC. Sucks that this organization has sunk so much money into that line that it would make people aprpoving national defense budgets shudder, but truth is - it sucks.

That Alabama guard (Chance Warmack) made a mess of Manti T'eo yesterday.

Enough of the Saban vitriol. So he turn-coated on the Dolphins seven years ago. Let it go. The biggest problem with the Dolphins is the Dolphins. Not Nick Saban and his practice bubble seven years later.

I'm not sure what all this fuss is about Wallace, am I missing something? He's not even the best WR on the Steelers. People talk about Bowe, Marshall, etc. not doing anything for their teams, but forgive me for my stupidity, but did the Steelers make the Playoffs this year? Didn't think so.

Best WRs in the league have something in common, they run ALL the routes and make ALL the tough catches. That's not Mike Wallace. He runs 1 route and drops passes. And we don't even know if we have a QB who can get him the ball on the 1 route he runs.

I'm not saying I'm against the guy. Sure I'd like to have his speed. But we DID have his speed in the form of Ted Ginn Jr. and Gates, and couldn't do anything with it. Now, I agree, Mike Wallace is on a different level than those 2 scrubs. But I don't want to see another Season where we're wasting talent because we don't know how to use it.

Very true. The problem isn't the Saban Bubble. It's the bubble Ross & some fans live in thinking Jeff Ireland has any qualifications to build a team.

There is more to being a good GM than being a scout!

FRESH ACORN ALERT!

FRESH ACORN ALERT!

FRESH ACORN ALERT!

Ravens release LB Sergio Kindle. Sergio is officially unemployed and therefore qualified to be signed and elevated to the top of the Phins depth chart.

Usually, the focus should be on the 10-15 ranked Universities and their Players. Makes sense.

Mark, not angry, just usual offseason blues. I'm actually tentatively hopeful this offseason. I THINK Miami WANTS to do the right thing (which is half the battle), but not sure they know HOW to do the right thing. We'll see.

But interesting you brought up Te'o Mark. Wasn't that YG's mancrush? Didn't look all that great, did he? Lacy ate him up, made him look like Dansby vs. Tennessee. And that's what worries me with these supposed college "stars." They look great until they get under the lights when it counts and then melt before our very eyes. Can this guy single-handedly turn a defense around (a la Patrick Willis)? Not from what I saw last night. Now, could have been an off night I give him that. But if you can't show up when it really counts, then what are you good for? That's the one thing I respect about Tebow. He was ready when it counted. But that's the last good thing I'll say about him on this blog.

Isn't that the same Sergio Kindle who many on this blog villified Ireland for not drafting in 2010 and now we have some bloggers who say he's worthless so we should sign him? Hmm, vicious circle it seems. We didn't do much of that under Philbin (acorn hunting) - well other than try a couple of vet Wrs because we were admittedly weak there....

Sparano is gone - people ...

The Patriots have a SYSTEM.
We have....what?
How do we assess players?
Do we have a system for scouting a player acquisition?
Does Ross have a plan?
Does Dee have a plan?
Does Ireland have a plan?
I think Philbin does. I do. Whether or not he can overcome all the challenges this dis-organization poses is yet to be seen.
Every time Ross speaks, I become less and less of a Dolphins fan. 40 years and slipping...

Wow... Te'o has 1 bad game and should drop out of the 1st round -- Ross (a billionaire) is an idiot -- A guy types ROTFLMFAO as if he is a 15 year old high school girl -- Gotta love the fact that ANYONE can post on websites...

Einstein once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expect different results. Expecting Ireland to make the right moves and/or draft the right players is crazy. Unfortunately, Ross is enamored with Jeff Ireland and no change is going to happen... EVER!

DC, please don't tell me you subscribe to this moronic mentality that the guy wouldn't help us because the team he was on didn't make the playoffs. That is such an inferior & juvenile point.

That's like the babboons here claiming we didn't need Dez bryant because they never make the playoffs. As if that's his fault? They wouldn't even have been in the hunt without him!

It is ironically, those same meatheads that said even Dallas didn't need Bryant because they had Austin. He who hasn't done squat in 2 full seasons!

The same early men who said we didn't need Marshalls production cause he's trouble & never got us to a post season. Without him in Chicago, do you think they're even close to playoffs?

The Steelers sucked because their D is getting ridiculously old & slow & Todd Haley ruined the Steeler offense.

Both of which are out of Wallace's control. Just having Wallace on the field would open up Hartline & Bess to do serious damage underneath as well as for whatever TE we can finally land.

His youth & speed make him the clearly obvious #1 target for the phins over Jennings who will be looking at ridiculous money. If anybody should get paid in S. Florida it should be the younger guy with the speed & lack of injury history.

Would NOT want to be the Redskins today. They might be looking at a lost Season with their star QB on the sidelines. After going all in to get him. Don't have the picks to fix things. Don't have the money (they are still being penalized for breaking the CAP) to bring in talent from elsewhere. That is a team on the brink of historic collapse.

Ryan Tannehill is looking like a masterful pick today in the light of those events.

All of Us saw at the time, that Sergio Kindle era una vaca, impossibly slow for the middle or on pass coverage. No surprise there.

No acorn hunting? LMAO What did you consider the entire FA class of 2012, all of whom didn't make the squad?

Garrard? C. Johnson? R. Johnson? G. Guyton, etc, etc etc

Were those NOT acorns? Some of you are so blinded by your Ireland support you don't even know what's real anymore.

In the 2010 NFL DRAFT, Miami traded the 12th pick to San Diego for the 28th pick and their 2nd rounder. San Diego selected Ryan Mathews (Pro Bowler) with that pick. Earl Thomas, Jason Pierre-Paul, Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant and Devin McCourty were all selected before Miami selected Jared Odrick with their pick... Then Miami used the 2nd Rounder they got in that trade to select Koa Misi, 2 picks ahead of Rob Gronkowski....

Guess who was in charge of making that decision...

DC Dolfan... Except for the fact that Russel Wilson was drafted 2 rounds later and out played Tannehill...

DC, he really hurt his stock yesterday it seems. Now granted, he was up against an NFL interior line almost singlehandedly. That would be the mitigating factor. Barrett Jones and Chance Warmack will be drafted in the first two rounds which indicates they should both be day one starters in the NFL.

Me, personally, you know my philosophy on all interior players and their value (Centres, guards, run stuffing DTs, interior linebackers). I don't believe you should be taking them with premium picks unless you a) already have your impact positions sorted out (CB, S, WR, QB, DE, TE) or b) they are truly exceptional (i.e. Mike Pouncey not Jared Odrick).

Now as of today, if you ask me which interior player I think has the chance to be exceptional in this draft - I would say it's Chance Warmack (mind you I haven't seen much of the Dts in this draft but none of them seem to be on the level that Suh is from what I've read). That guy was on the second level all night and is exactly the type of lineman we need (like Pouncey). But does Ireland have the balls to make that pick??? It would be gutsy, but again it means forgoing addressing one of a DE, WR, TE, S, or C with an early draft pick ....

By the way YG isn't alone on his man crush for T'eo, there are many here. Personally i wuldn't be a big proponent of making that pick. I mean every year there seems to be a ILB drafted high but last I checked not many are making the impact Pat Willis has (although Keuchly had a great year too). Interior players can wait ..

LOL, I actually don't subscribe to that mentality. I was just using their (those that do) argument against them.

Like I said, I'm personally not sold on Wallace. He's not in the mold of the best receivers in the league. Jennings IS. I do agree the younger guy (not coming off injury) is probably the safer choice long-term.

I guess I'm pessimistic a superstar might emerge in Miami since it's been so long since we've had one (at that position in particular).

CanePride, yeah, there's that too. If Russell Wilson becomes the star player from this draft class, GMs need to start packing their bags all over the league.

LOL, every team every year signs guys to camp to see if they can make their team. What's your point???

We didn't have the cap to make serious moves in free agency.

By the way, disagree on Marshall. Glad that puke is gone and one year in with Chicago and the coach is fired. That's three coaches on Marshall's watch. yet it's never his fault. He anc Cutler did the same song and dance in Denver. Big numbers, should do better, when the money's on the line, they suck the dikk. yet it's never their fault ...

CanePride, no doubt the 2010 draft was a major disaster. The blackest of marks on Jeff Ireland and the incident I begrudge him for more than any other.

By the way, I'm no Ireland supporter or antagonist. I'm just watching - he had a good draft last year - I'm anxious to see if he continues or if he reverts ...

I don't think he's done all bad or all good ... but if he doesn't get this year right then it's time to get a different set of eyes at this control.

A #1 RECEIVER DOESN'T IN A WEST COAST OFFENSE. ROUTE RUNNERS MATTERS IN A WEST COAST OFFENSE. I WOULD FOUR SOLID ROUTE RUNNERS OUT THERE LINING UP AGAINST A DEFENSE VERSUS A SPEEDY RECEIVER. IT'S EASY TO FIGURE OUT WHO YOU'RE GOING TO TARGET. YOU HAVE TO PICK YOUR POISON WITH FOUR WES WELKER ROUTE RUNNERS ON THE FIELD. LET ME ALSO MENTION THAT WES WELKER IS QUICK AND NOT FAST. O.J. MCDUFFIE WASN'T FAST, BUT QUICK AND WAS MARINO'S FAVORITE 3RDPEABO DOWN TARGET.

I said it yesterday, and it is worth repeating. Draft the bama guard in the 1st round wouldn't be a bad move. Fans would hate it, Tannehill/Bush/Miller/Thomas etc would love it.

Ross is way too cheap to build a winning team.
