« Stephen Ross gives his state of the Dolphins | Main | Saban finally admits messing up on Drew Brees »

My take on Ross, Wallace, Jennings, Bowe

As you know, Stephen Ross spoke on the state of the team Monday. And I came away from the talk absolutely certain that the Dolphins have some sort of plan for 2013 -- because the owner mentioned this plan half-a-dozen times.

But when I asked him what that plan is, I was disappointed to hear the answer Ross gave.

No, as I write in my column in The Miami Herald today, I didn't intend to hear a blow-by-blow of what the Fins are about to do. I was, however, hoping for something beyond, "Win."

Frankly, I left Monday's talk not knowing if the Dolphins -- a team with approximately $46.8 million in salary cap space this offseason -- are expecting to be a big player in free agency or not.

In one breath, Ross said he'll pay whatever it takes to get a player. In the next breath he said free agency is not the answer. Sooo, the message was a little garbled.

I guess I'm just a poor immigrant that no understandy Inglich goot.

After writing my column Monday evening, I heard from a Dolphins employe in the know who told me the Dolphins will absolutely dive into free agency and happily pay top dollar for top-tier talent in free agency. He told me that is what Ross meant to say.

I hope that is true.

We'll see.

I hope the Dolphins pick the best deep-threat receiver in free agency and sign him. Yes, that to me would be Mike Wallace. (And yes, he drops some). But I like the idea of Miami not needing 14-play drives every time on offense to score touchdowns. This team needs a 50-, 60- and 75-yard bomb over the top of the defense every once in a while.

Explosive plays on offense make me write happy.

Most great teams have them.

The Dolphins have very few.

Mando unhappy with few.

Anyway, I suppose a guy like Greg Jennings is also a possibility, but while fans have a growing fascination with him, I'm not quite sure he's the deep threat Miami needs. Don't get me wrong, he's very good. If Miami cannot land Wallace, he's he next best answer.

If Miami lands Wallace and Jennings ... awesome.

But he would not be my priority. He'd be No. 2. He's older than Wallace by three years. He's going to be 30 next season. He's been injured. He's declined his last two years. And he'll be very expensive. So I see some red flags.

Yes, Wallace has some flags, too. But they blur to me as he's running a 4.3 past defenders. To me, he needs to be the UFA priority once free agency opens, assuming he's on the market.

Many of you also like Dwayne Bowe. Pass.

He's not a deep threat. He's also older than Wallace. He kind of reminds me of Brandon Marshall. And that didn't get the Dolphins in the playoffs.

Armando, you are right on. Ross speaks with forked tongue. Like a used car salesman. Its no fun being a Fin fan anymore.

Discussing big backs. Love to see us draft one. With a competent qb a big bruising back can take a team over the top. These guys are always game changers when they are good and a guy like that can take a team deep into the playoffs. If you have a tougher guy than the opposition then every guy he lines up against is at a disadvantage. That means double and triple teams, leaving other players to make plays. It is never a mistake to have extra qbs and big running backs.

What if Percy Harvin decides to renew his request for a trade? Possibility?

Come on guys, anyone really expect Ross to give away the season plan in a media scrum?? I told you guys a million times, DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR IN THE PRESS. It's all lies and hidden truths.

I WILL NOT BECOME THE COACH OF ALABAMA!!!

What did Ross say that's even remotely controversial? He has made it clear the team will spend whatever necessary to try and sign a targeted FA or two while ALSO stating that FA is not a panacea where wild spending sprees solve core issues.

That happens to be 100% CORRECT.

Exactly how many times does this have to be demonstrated to people before they get it?? You didn't get the message when Dan Snyder was going FA crazy year after year with NOTHING to show for it? You didn't get it when the Bills spent a ton this past offseason (including the 'prize' FA Mario Williams) and didn't improve one iota? You didn't get it when the 1995 Dolphins signed a glaxy of star FA's and wound up a dysfunctional mess that cost Shula his job?

While all that time, solid, winning franchises like the Patriots, Steelers, and Packers were doing quite the OPPOSITE. Ignoring fan bleatings to sign this guy or that and having thoroughly boring, uneventful offseasons that focused squarely on the draft and only VERY occassionally dipping a toe into FA.

THAT is how you build a winner.

Ross simply stated what any intelligent owner with any sense of how to do things right would say.

Will he get there? I don't know. I do know this 'fan mentality' of wanting to spend like drunken sailors is beyond moronic and a PROVEN ticket to failure.

Gary, I would love to trade one of our extra thirds or even seconds for Harvin and then sign him to an extension. His numbers have been good, but not great. The reason for this is Tavaris Jackson, Joe Webb and Christian Ponder have been his qbs. He can also help with special teams and even help with running the ball a few times a game.

This post hit the Fins strategy right on the head, WE NEED SPEED!! Need to draft that TE Eiffert from ND as well, as long as he can run a 4.55

WHDP,

Depending On Lacy's Combine! If Lacy Runs A Low 4.4! And Can Pick Up a House!! He Will Be Top 5!! The Guy Has a Lifetime Career Avg. Of Almost 7 yds a Carry!!

He Was Injured Most Of The Year! And The Guy Still Ran For Over 1300 Yds!!

Ted is a wise man. Pay attention to what he just posted. The problem with the Dolphins for the best decade has been very simple. No leadership, no quarterback, and a crap Front Office. It has little to nothing to do with money or Free Agency.

I have ZERO confidence in Ireland to get it right. His drafts have been underwhelming post Parcells, they consistently pick the wrong FA's, and there is STILL no leadership on the team unless Tanny rapidly steps up his game and wins the confidence of his teammates and admiration from his fans.

Overspending on an overrated player like Mike Wallace or oft-injured player like Greg Jennings does nothing to improve this team. Drafting brilliantly and playing the FA market correctly are the tickets to success. Ask yourselves what has made the Patriots as successful as the Fins are embarrassing?

Ted, Ross could stand in front of a microphone and say "the Earth is round" at this point and some people would jump all over him.

Doesn't mean I'm even a big fan of the guy, but people have become so wrapped up in visceral, irrational hatred that even completely sensible, uncontroversial statements like the ones you mention wind up under assault.

Hard to take that segment of the fanbase very seriously right now. They be cray-cray!

THREE PLAYERS, that's it! the offseason can be so confusing, all those draft picks, freeagency...if you take this defense, this team, and look at what really hurt are chances this year(passing and a weak ground game) and add just three players, the likes of LACEY, JENNINGS, and WALLACE... you have an offense to not only secure those two or three close games that got away on us, you now have BIG time weopons that create the mismatch to overtake any game on any given day. with all the amunition ross has going into this offseason, it would serve mimai well to focus like a lazer beam on these three players, if they were the ONLY additions to next years team, the quality far out weighs the quantity, and as you said, this is exactly how miami should enter the offseason, QUALITY, not quantity.

Tradition, were they really?? because I remember them playing in an NFC championship game with Lovie Smith and Jay Cutler ... until Cutler tapped out anyway ...

What was that ... last year, year before ... not too long ago anyway.

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | January 08, 2013 at 11:02 AM

Mark,

This actually brings up a good point...regarding RG3.

Cutler had issues with his knee, and felt the need to "tap out"...

Cutler was pretty much raked over the coals for the decision to show more concern for the future of his knee, rather than the second half of a playoff game, even by some players.

Too bad RG3 didn't realize, at least at the half, it was time to sit the rest of the game out.

So you're upset Ross didn't tell you his full strategy and who he likes, just so you can write about it and let every agent know this. Anyhow tell me you think Wallace and Jennings will put up the same numbers and be the same threat when they don't have Rogers or Rothlisberger throwing the ball to them. How many times have you seen a a so called big time receiver stink when he doesn't have a pro bowl QB throwing to them. BM played well when Moore was QB, but how did he play with Henne. How much better were his numbers with Cutler! Tannehill is the deciding factor if a FA receiver will be successful in Miami.

Would TANNEBUST run down field and block like RW does.?
NEVER, He is a skinny little white boy fegala. LMAO
ROSS,CLUELESS,
IRELAND,MORON,
TANNEBUST,LOSER.

same excuses 4 henne as is w/rt.
lol

Ding! Ding! Ding! For all you fans out of the play-offs let’s play that yearly game “ I want to be GM”. The Miami Dolphins on 80% of the Draft Boards look as if with the first pick they will take a DE or OT. This is with the assumption they take the best player on the board and not the #1 position of need deep threat WR. I can live with that because of the So Long, Long and pairing Cameron Wake with a twin there are some Starting positions at #12 at DE and OT. Secondly the #2 pick spins back at #32 or 33 because 5 teams were tied at 7-9 and the Dolphins pick 1st amongst the tied teams in the next round being round 2 (nice). I see no reason this 2nd round pick isn’t a WR Top Pick for need. The 2nd Second round pick at 42-43 could then be a corner, tight end, playmaker, and the best player for need or another wide out. I’m predicating my predictions on quality signings in Free Agency and not necessarily Wallace, Jennings or whoever at WR. I’m not convinced Philbin/Sherman look at Mike Wallace like we do as fans. The Dolphins can add depth, and quality with the FA money available this year and youth with draft picks. We need WCO linemen and playmakers on offense Philbin’s picture of this mosaic puzzle I believe is going to influence Ireland. Remember also Mike Sherman was a GM in Green bay for 4 years when he was the head coach. I believe this is Sherman’s WCO as much as Philbin’s. I don’t believe Ireland will buck the system and not get Philbin/Sherman the type players they want on offense. Thanks SteFin

Ross is smarter than he looks. Ireland is dumber than he looks (although, that's hard). And no, the two receivers that budtki mentioned won't cure the Dolphins ills. In fact, I have no faith that any of this year's FA wideouts will do a whole lot to improve this team. I would rather continue to beef up the OL and secondary through free agency with a few solid players, and draft a couple of promising WR's, and a TE.

How is it that Ireland passed on every possible receiver in one of the deepest wideout drafts in recent history? Think T.Y. Hilton would have helped us last year? Draft a playmaker for a change

Armando, you really come off as a bit of a petulant brat here.

Is Ross supposed to stand there and tell you EXACTLY what the team intends to do in the offseason? What, exactly, is served by that? For that matter, how on Earth could he even do something like that before we even know who will/won't be available?

Valid criticism of Ross is perfectly valid. This is just silliness, though.

It sucks we have so many needs on this team. It makes everyone a little right as for as names offered to be our 1st rd pick. Even Chance Warmock. Its really becoming a jumbled mess who we should pick first. Almost everything qualifies.

There's even a mock having us take an offensive tackle 1st rd.

Except for qb, c, wherever J-Mart plays, Wake, and Reshad Jones. Every position on team really could qualify for the 1st rd pick. Where do we really start is the main question.

afta watching that axx kicking at the hands of the putz's.
phinz need a lt and rt again.
lol

You guys may not like Wallace as a targeted FA...

But I can tell you that the Skins's fans in DC weren't overly excited about paying Pierre Garcon as a #1 WR....

The Skins were like 10-0 when Garcon played (he sat out 6 games @ least)....

they were 0-1 in the playoffs....but there were certainly other contributing factors to that play off loss....

My point....

The Skins didn't just draft a QB and then have the GM congradulate himself in front of the fans because the team had a 4-3 record ("fire yourself" already).....

They understood that a ROOKIE QB with no weapons was useles...so they signed the best and most expierence reciever they could afford....and it paid MAJOR dividens this season....

We may not get the BEST and most expensive FA WR out there....but we dam sure had better get the best and most expensive we can afford....other wise we will be screaming "Tanne has no weapons"...for another season...

db,sometin happened to starks, he suxed the 2nd half of the season, phinz need dl help.
odick blows, give mckyd's all his reps.

kris, yes on wallace,
ballz to the floor yeah.
lol

What Armando wants from Ross, is to know who the Fins are targetting in FA and exactly how much $ they're willing to dish out. Then Mando wants to see a Rosenhaus hold us hostage or just use us as leverage while negotiating with other teams.
At the end, Mando will write his nice editorial piece about how incompetent front office is and how no free agents will come here or how we won't overspend on players

i was driving long 2 the airport,
but now,,,,,,,, make him a mid range offer,
if healthy.

It is mind boggling that Shanahan has not yet been fired. This is not hindsight-is-20-20. The entire nation called for RGIII to come out after the 2nd possession in the 1st quarter.

RGIII has been a victim of a violent crime. The torn ACL happend A MONTH AGO. He clearly was not recovered from the original grotesque injury, which is why he was made to play with a Dan Marino knee brace circa 1999.

Why are most people so stupid? Pay attention!!! His knee was *already* injured *before the game started*. He did not "re-injure" it. The grotesque injury had happened a mere 21 days earlier!!!!!!!!!!!! That's why he was wearing a huge Dan Marino knee brace and why his knee finally buckled when he simply tried to pick up a ball.

This was a crime.

Gary, Harvin *always* has a broken ankle, going back to college. Dude is lightning but was cursed with thin ankles. Thus he can only be lightning for about 9 games a year. Look it up; he missed about 40% of his games at UF too.

Did oscar really post that a rookie WR would be better than Wallace. Just how did Blackmon do his first season? It takes time for a college WR to get accustomed to NFL speed, sign Wallace, resign Hartline, draft a WR in the second. A DE in the first. I would love to see Lacy in a Dolphins uniform as well enough of D Thomas its obvious he sucks

ouch

oscar comes from the old hood,
likes of duper/clayton lightning out of the axx fast.
lol

Clue bad example. Look who blackmon had throwing to him. Also AJ Green, etc etc...

Agree with Joe Mama....

This was an injury that happened 3 weeks ago...

NOT a BANG-BANG injury that just happened...and we watched a gutsy QB and a distraught coach try to win one for the Gipper....

This QB has been injured/hobbled for weeks...and Shanny should have to answer for this...

Not criminally...but to the press....

CommonSense, Statically wasnt Henne and Tannehill in the same boat, dont think either one of them were that great. Also AJ Green is a stud WR he's the exception, there are no WRs in this draft as good as him or Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson. What you gotta say now

K, the RG3 thing has to stop and is a joke. Absolutly ridiculous....

Clue, how about Jones then?

You mean Henne in his 2nd season with a pro bowl reciever and 4 years of college vs Tannehills no WRs 19 college starts? And Tannehill only posted similar numbers? Good point, no way that guy gets better!

Common, Jones?? DO you mean Julio Jones who is also a stud?? I believe Tannehill will get better I just dont feel like if we draft a WR in the first round the guy would be better than Wallace or Jennings. Are you saying Im wrong?

The downside to signing any of these fa wr's is, imo, Brady/Manning will still rule the afc at least for another 3yrs.

3yrs, lets use this number in determining which fa wr we should sign.

1. Jennings--- Entering 8th season, will be entering 12th season when Brady/Manning dominance is over.

2. Wallace---Entering 5th season, 8th season post Brady /Manning dominance.

3. Bowe--- Entering 7th season, 10th season post Manning/Brady dominance.

I used the post "Brady/Manning" formula because it will be extremely difficult for any team to get past Manning/ Brady over these next 3 seasons. That's why signing one of these wr's for big dollars could be "pseudo-pissing$$ in the wind".

Can any of these wr's help this offense? Yes. Realistic help us get past Brady/Manning these next 3 seasons? Highly doubtful.

That's why 4yrs down the road(post Brady/Manning), it may have been better to forego any of the fa wr options, and just draft 2 wr's and our TE now. In 4 seasons, our qb will be in his 5rh season with all 3 of these recievers(2 wr's,TE) going into thier 4th seasons, with "US" being well position to claim our own dominance once the 3yrs Brady/Manning dominance is over.

For me its about positioning ourselves to be heirs to the throne once the Brady/Manning dominance is done. Which ever taem is best positioned for this. Will be "new knigs of the afc. Because within the next 3 seasons, it's still the Brady/Manning afc show.

After writing my column Monday evening, I heard from a Dolphins employe in the know who told me the Dolphins will absolutely dive into free agency and happily pay top dollar for top-tier talent in free agency. He told me that is what Ross meant to say.
------------------------------------------------------

This is pretty much what I said yesterday after reading Ross's statement not once but twice.

Inarticulate (incapable of giving coherent, clear or effective expression to one's ideas or feelings -- Merriam Webster) is what I would say.

How this become a billionaire?

YG thats loser talk. There is still the WildCard that is up for grabs. If we can put pressure on Brady like the Giants did in the superbowl he becomes human. Manning is old AF and I dont expect him to last much more after next season. If we can improve on offensive weapons we can be at least at least 10 games a year

win*

Common Sense...

I don't understand you're post....what about the RG3 situation is a joke....

We have entered an era in football were if a player trying to make a routine QB sack accidently strikes the head of an opposing QB....it is an UNSPORTSMAN like penalty....

and era in which a reciever is now considered DEFENSELESS....

an era in which a concussed player has to pass a serious of test (NEXT WEEK) to hope to be able to play football 1-2 weeks later....

and some how it's a joke in you're mind that fans are confused that about what constitues player saftey???

I'm all ears/eyes....

please explain the joke to me....

What do you guys expect him to say? Yeah, we are going after a big name WR? Only to tip the teams hand to an opponent?

soprano fired... fist pump

3-4yrs from now, when the Brady/Manning afc dominance is over, the team "best positioned" to take over will be "new heirs" to the afc throne.

We dont want to be "caught trying to reload our guns" when this time occurs.

So, if youre going to sign any of these fa's to a big contract, sign the one who will "overall be beneficial the most". To me that's the one with the "shortest shelf life" but greatest effect. Greg Jennings.

I say greatest effect in terms of helping develop the "young drafted wr's" most. While also giving the most "onfield consistency". Yes, he's injury prone. But when on-the-field, he's probably the smartest and most consistent of the 3.

Bruce, tanne did run down the field and blocked on a few occasions. Idiot, we would prefer 300 yard games to risking his career.

Joe Mama, right on dude. Fire that coach. WTF was he thinking playing him with a 14 point lead? Doesn't matter what the player says. I said sit because we need you next year.

Clue, I was just saying that #1 WR in the draft usually can play well, Blackmon was an exception because of QB play and possibly his off the field issues. Maybe I missed your point earlier.

Clue,

Maybe I can clarify it to you. My post was about who to choose or not choose anything. It was about realistically showing how much signing any of them helps us overcome Brady/Manning these next 3 seasons.

Realistically, Manning/Brady are still set to rule the afc for the next 3 seasons. I also post if signing any of the 3, overall, Jennings probably fits best.

My proposal is no matter what, still draft at least 2 wr's. Need to get one of the top 3 TE's too. Look at this for a moment, then look at where this positions 3-4 years from now when the Brady/Manning dominance has come to a close.

Drafting 2 wr's and a TE, still puts in very good position within these 3yrs, because they'll still be very productive. But they'll also be gaining the "needed experience" and be a key cog in ouir explosion to the top, as "new afc kings" when the Brady/Manning dominance ends.

Hope this doesnt confuse you because its difficult to explain it all in one simple post.

Is it my imagination or does Ross look like one of Jeff Dunham's dummies?

Kris,

Heres how I see it. Should he have been pulled earlier? Yeah, that case can be made. He is a pistol (basically option) QB, that NEEDS to be mobile. Which he wasn't nearly up to his usual play. So for that reason, maybe they should have planned to go with Cousins.

Why it is a joke. Becasue RG3 can take himself out if injured and also had to be cleared by a medical staff. Also had RG3 not played, and Cousins sucked Shanny would be getting it the other way from the same people. It isn't like a QB has played injured before either, tons of examples. Also these guys get paid a lot to pay a contact sport. It is what it is.

FA WR Signing Money:

1. Brian Hartline---- 4yrs $30 million(slightly over &4 million a yr) But please put him in the slot.

2. Greg Jennings----- 4yrs $36 million($9 million a year)

Then take 2 wr's from this draft to be the future of this wr's corps moving forward. Jennings and Hartline will be the catalyst in teaching these rookie wr's how to be "professionals going forward.

Dont forget to draft that TE too.

Hartline(slightly over $7 million a year)

Kris,

You Know Dashi has been Preaching This All Season!

You Sit a Player when he is Hurt!! Specially when he is Injured!! A Sprain can Become A Tear!!

Philbin Did The Right Thing!! With Reggie! And Everyone Else!! If The Guy Is Hurt, Sit Him!! Playing On A Injury!! Will Get You Even More Hurt!!

Another Reason, Dashi Doesn't Believe Dansby!! Dansby Was Never Really Hurt!! Torn Muscle!! Dansby Would've really been Hurt!! He Would've Went On IR Before Long!!

Philbin is That Kind Of Coach!! That Kind Of Man!! He Actually Cares about His Players!!

Once again I must explain physics to you dullards. Hartline might not be an elite #1, but he's not a slot receiver. Hartline takes long strides like a gazelle. Slot receivers are short and squat--think Bess and Welker.

Do you guys watch football? Hartline's 0-40 time is decent but his 0-20 time is not so good.

Can you understand what I'm teaching you?

YG Manning is great this year but he will decline soon.

Hartline $7M? Hmm, the 10th highest paid receiver in 2012 and 2013 each are tabbed for a cap hit of approx $8.1M. Seems a little steep for Hartline.

Mark, buy a dictionary, clown! How is it NOT relevant?
You said you can't win with guys like Marshall!

I pointed out two era teams who DID in fact win with guys like Marshall. Not just 1 or 2 of them, but, rosters chock full of them!

before you question someones relevancy, start first by questioning your intelligence or reading comprehnsion skills!

I forgot to add the word "either," to help you better understand.

Hartline might not be an elite #1 (he's very good), but he's not a slot receiver *either*. Get it?

He takes long strides. Slot receivers are shorter, stockier, built more like Barry Sanders type body. 5'8", 205, Welker, Bess.

Hartline's 0-40 time is decent but his 0-20 time is not slot receiver type quickness.

Which is fine. Hartline is a very good outside WR, which is why he had an 80 yarder this year and was open deep several other times.

Common, my point was there are no sure fire cant miss #1 WR prospect in the draft so our best bet is to sign a FA.

No, Common Sense the child, the RGIII thing is not a "joke."

Go back and watch the original knee injury from 3 or 4 weeks ago. I think it was against Baltimore. It was a disgusting, grotesque, tibia/fibula (lower part of leg) going completely sideways in the way it shouldn't, very very very bad injury that is on the level of Joe Theisman (look it up, kids). There is no way he was even within 12 months of recovering from *that* Theisman-esque injury. He tore his ACL *then*. The only thing supporting him during that game was the Dan Marino knee brace and his incredible quad strength--he used other muscles to compensate.

That he began playing 3 weeks ago (one week after the injury) was terrible.

He was already (still) injured at the start of the playoff game.

He did not magically reinjure it when we saw his lower leg bend grossly sideways for the 2nd time when merely trying to pick up a ball. That brace failed him that time.

This is the crime that the Redskins at this very moment are trying to cover up.

What the MRI showed was that he was injured FROM THE HIT A MONTH AGO and should not have been in *that* game.

The freaking doctor, Andrews, has basically said as much but with 40% slyness based on his conflicting loyalties (to patient and the corporation that pays him--violation of his oath by the way).

So it's kind of come out half azzed.

Smart people here can follow what I'm saying. We can read between the lines when we read news articles.

The doctor is saying that RGIII (1) tore his ACL in that game a month ago, (2) should not have gone back into *that* game; (3) should not have come back the next week and the few games thereafter to lead Wash into the playoffs, and (4) should not have been playing in the Seattle game (obviously).

We saw RGIII suffer essentially an historicly grotesque injury (3 weeks ago) on the level of a Joe Theisman broken fibula/tibula, yet he came back next week and played 4 weeks in a row thereafter.

The kid is ***INCREDIBLY*** brave and has been failed by his coach and his organization.
