« Stephen Ross gives his state of the Dolphins | Main | Saban finally admits messing up on Drew Brees »

My take on Ross, Wallace, Jennings, Bowe

As you know, Stephen Ross spoke on the state of the team Monday. And I came away from the talk absolutely certain that the Dolphins have some sort of plan for 2013 -- because the owner mentioned this plan half-a-dozen times.

But when I asked him what that plan is, I was disappointed to hear the answer Ross gave.

No, as I write in my column in The Miami Herald today, I didn't intend to hear a blow-by-blow of what the Fins are about to do. I was, however, hoping for something beyond, "Win."

Frankly, I left Monday's talk not knowing if the Dolphins -- a team with approximately $46.8 million in salary cap space this offseason -- are expecting to be a big player in free agency or not.

In one breath, Ross said he'll pay whatever it takes to get a player. In the next breath he said free agency is not the answer. Sooo, the message was a little garbled.

I guess I'm just a poor immigrant that no understandy Inglich goot.

After writing my column Monday evening, I heard from a Dolphins employe in the know who told me the Dolphins will absolutely dive into free agency and happily pay top dollar for top-tier talent in free agency. He told me that is what Ross meant to say.

I hope that is true.

We'll see.

I hope the Dolphins pick the best deep-threat receiver in free agency and sign him. Yes, that to me would be Mike Wallace. (And yes, he drops some). But I like the idea of Miami not needing 14-play drives every time on offense to score touchdowns. This team needs a 50-, 60- and 75-yard bomb over the top of the defense every once in a while.

Explosive plays on offense make me write happy.

Most great teams have them.

The Dolphins have very few.

Mando unhappy with few.

Anyway, I suppose a guy like Greg Jennings is also a possibility, but while fans have a growing fascination with him, I'm not quite sure he's the deep threat Miami needs. Don't get me wrong, he's very good. If Miami cannot land Wallace, he's he next best answer.

If Miami lands Wallace and Jennings ... awesome.

But he would not be my priority. He'd be No. 2. He's older than Wallace by three years. He's going to be 30 next season. He's been injured. He's declined his last two years. And he'll be very expensive. So I see some red flags.

Yes, Wallace has some flags, too. But they blur to me as he's running a 4.3 past defenders. To me, he needs to be the UFA priority once free agency opens, assuming he's on the market.

Many of you also like Dwayne Bowe. Pass.

He's not a deep threat. He's also older than Wallace. He kind of reminds me of Brandon Marshall. And that didn't get the Dolphins in the playoffs.

"I’ll be out of work for like 5 minutes,” Rob Ryan told McMahon.

The whole family doesn't know when to keep their mouths shut. No question Dallas' defence underperformed while Ryan was their DC. Yes injuries were a problem this year but I'm talking about his whole time their.

I actually like Rex Ryan as a DC. To me he's the class of the brothers.....CLASS maybe being a poor choice of words.

Good luck to the Jets next year. I can't see any coach wanted to go there with Rex now on the hotseat. To me it's one of the least attractive jobs in the league right now and as Dolphins fan....I LOVE IT!!....

Armando seems to be implying that he prefers Wallace to Brandon Marshall. Wallace has not even come close to achieving what Marshall has. Speed is not everything when talking about a big play receiver. Michael Irving was a big play receiver without the blazing speed (ran a 4.55) but he was strong, smart and knew how to get open. To say that you would not get Bowe because he reminds you of Marshall is ridiculous. If Bowe is Marshall without the off the field issues then you sign him up. If the Dolphins did not make the playoffs it was not because of Marshall, it was because they did not have a franchise QB.

Armando did you not see Marshall's numbers this year? The Chicago fans are really happy with his performance. He is going to start in the pro bowl this year. He made some pretty big plays for the Bears. So if Bowe is Marshall then bring him here.

Craig M,

From what you've posted I gather then that he's an O minded Coach from the S.Peyton school of thought. There in a tough spot (like I care) and better be smart with that 1st Rd pick given they will probably look QB and I really don't like any of the available ones. I think Geno Smith is real raw but will go high bucking latest trends in copy cat NFL. After with Barkley and Landry Jones I see fools gold although Ark. QB Tyler Wilson has a good arm maybe he takes his own QB Ryan Nassib mid Rds but if it's me I'm hoping Georgia's Aaron Murray comes out saw him plenty or go BA OT on the board God knows they need it.

Orlando

That is the point. Marshall and Cutler have a mutual love fest. They both make each other look better.

But they don't make the team reach the playoffs.

After seeing what Bama last night, it makes you want to get some of their players. Why not resign Long and get one of Bama's hogs inside. The last Bleacher Report had the fins taking guard Chance Warmack. Here is their reasoning:

The Miami Dolphins will keep their front office and coaching staff together after a strong first season from Joe Philbin's team. Now they must focus on getting better at key positions and upping the talent level.

Fans in Miami might not love the idea of drafting an offensive guard No. 12 overall, but Chance Warmack is worth it. Watch Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy or T.J. Yeldon dominating defenses with their legs over the last two years, and you'll see Warmack clearing lanes and punishing defenders in the hole.

Offensive guard may not be a sexy pick, but it's a damn smart one for a team on the rise.

Good luck to the Jets next year. I can't see any coach wanted to go there with Rex now on the hotseat. To me it's one of the least attractive jobs in the league right now and as Dolphins fan....I LOVE IT!!....

Craig M | January 08, 2013 at 09:20 PM

Agree on the Jets part of the post given I feel the problems in Dallas are faaaar greater.

The biggest question mark regarding the Jets is all the guaranteed money tied up in 7 players.

David Harris 11 Mil (only one worth it)
Santonio Holmes 11 Mil(who will throw to him)
A.Cromartie 9 Mil
M.Sanchez 8.5 Mil
Reevis record breaking deal for CB

ect..... I saw on NFL Net. it's like 74 Mil. on 7 players I smell trades and fire sales

(Dancing with lamp shade on my head!)

fin4life,

I've heard Marrone in about 4-5 interviews now and in each one he's HATED when someone has referred to him as 'an offensive-minded coach'. He's always said, 'when people say that, it makes me sound like I don't know anything about defence'. He's going to take the approach of a true CEO on the Bills, namely, be aware of what the offence, defence and special teams are doing. He's already said he's not going to do the play-calling. I think his first choice would be Carmichael, who he has ties to from his days at NO.

This guy impresses the Hell out of me. I think the Bills are impressed with what we've done here in Miami and I think they've taken a page out of our book. I fully expect they will draft Nassib and I know he loves the kid. Could be a good one, in time. I'd even go as far to say they take him in the second round. Marrone likes him that much and why wait, if that's the guy you love and trust. I expect a Matt Moore, Alex Smith fill in for a couple of years, while Nassib grows up and maybe they look at T'eo or an OL in the first.

Orlando

That is the point. Marshall and Cutler have a mutual love fest. They both make each other look better.

But they don't make the team reach the playoffs.

Vinny | January 08, 2013 at 09:31 PM

While being a couple of WORLD CLASS A-HOLES! Great point Vinny.

Vinny,

You need a TEAM. The reason the Bears are not in the playoff is because they were desimated by injuries and their Offensive Line is horrible. The Steelers did not make the playoffs either, is that because of Wallace? Detroit did not make the playoffs and Calvin Johnson broke all kinds of records, but should they get rid of him too? My point is you need a franshise QB, and more than 1 receiver. A big play receiver is just one piece of several that you need to have a playoff contender. No matter what receiver they bring in, if Tannehill does not take the next step to becoming a franshise QB and if the fins don't add a few other pieces they will be sitting at home watching the playoffs again.

Craig M,

Then we need to be mindful of them although I actually see Alex Smith landing in K.C. with Andy Reid makes more sense than a Vick re-union with the skill players in that O the caretaker makes more sense.

Orlando,

Not picking apart your argument but I believe Cutler threw for about 3100 yeards or so this season. That's not good enough for a top tier QB. Not saying it was all his fault but his QB play was very inconsistent this season, as he mostly targetted Marshall.

I actually think the window has closed or is closing on the Bears. I don't actually see this a desirable location for a HC. OL is bad, as you've mentioned and it's the 'Marshall and Cutler' show which ended badly in Denver. On top of all that I believe Urlacher is done in Chicago and is a shadow of his former self. All in all, not a great team. It'll be interested to see what happens there when Marshall becomes frustrated with the situation, when he tries to make out that he's the only one trying.

fin4life,

You may well be right with Smith in KC. I don't see Geno Smith as being the answer anywhere.

Perhaps if Barkley makes it all the way through the first round, he takes a chance on him at the top of the second.

Orlando Dolphan | January 08, 2013 at 09:43 PM

The Bears weren't decimated by injury with the exception of Urlacher whose been on the downside for sometime. The real leader there is Briggs they just had there annual meltdown right at mid-season like they did in 2011. The point isn't so much whose to blame for me but what happens now till next Training Camp.

On Dec-31-06 it was an argument caused by Marshall and a cousin in a Denver night club that ended in the death of teamate Darrant Williams. There were 11 calls to 911 at his residence over domestic disputes while there. In Miami after one off-season wife stabs him. Last Yr. he forgives her (don't know whose more twisted but neither is well) then ends up punching a woman in N.Y. retaurant fight with wife. Let's see what this off-season holds and Cutler is a phenom talent with selfish ego who can't shoulder blame. I'd make a money bet these 2 never win a S.B. EVER!

So tired of the Fire Ireland comments here.

It's obvious that Ross must fire him, but he won't.

So get on board the mediocrity train and kwit yer bitchin'

I dont see Barkley getting past us at #12.

Craig,

I agree with your point that Marshall can be demanding but he is a heck of a receiver. It is a miracle that Cutler survived last season. Did you see that offensive line? They nearly got him killed. You cannot possibly be successful under those conditions. They were able to winn 10 games last year with a putrid offensive line which is a credit to Cutler. I prefer Marshall any day to any of the free agent receivers available this year (minus the off the field stuff). To me the best receiver available in this FA class is Bowe because he reminds me of Marshall.

You can make an argument that if the fins would have had Marshall this year, they win 2 more games and are in the playoffs.

Orlando, the Bears will offer 10+ million to Big Jake.

fin4life,

You may well be right with Smith in KC. I don't see Geno Smith as being the answer anywhere.

Perhaps if Barkley makes it all the way through the first round, he takes a chance on him at the top of the second.

Craig M | January 08, 2013 at 09:54 PM

I believe the BA player is Star Lotulelei (DT Utah 6'4"/320) but the Chiefs have drafted alot of DL in Pioli's time there for the 3/4. Think about this they have Tyson Jackson and Glen Dorsey at DE spots and last Yr. took D.Poe (combine freak) to play DT (all high #1 picks) so I actually see pick-1 in play for the upcoming draft with Lotulelei the prize or somebody loving the possibility of what Geno Smith could be or maybe K.C. takes Smith and Reid sees a new McNabb. I don't know but he could trade out and stock up.

fin4life,

No question that Marshall is a head case and that his attitude can end up hurting the team but he is still an extremely talented receiver and that is all I am arguing. If Bowe is as talented as Marshall, as Armando seems to suggest, then that is the guy I want. Now there have been some coaches that can work with those guys. Michael Irving was not a saint and yet the Cowboys won championships with him under Jimmy Johnson' watch. Irvin was also very demanding of the football but they found a way to make it work.

If the Dolphins just want choir boys they're in the wrong business. Most top receivers are divas.

Chicago could well be a landing spot for Big Jake. If I was them I would sign Big Jake, Draft Guard Chance Warmack (if available), and if possible either draft Center Barret Jones (Bama) or Tackle DJ Flucker (BAMA) in the second round. That offensive linve for Chicago was pathetic last year.

Orlando,

I'm not giving Cutler credit for anything this year. I actually liked this kid a lot coming out of College but I think he rubs his teamates the wrong way and I don't believe he's a good leader. Urlacher's done as a player but let's see how this team does with Cutler and Marshall leading the charge (fin4life is right, Briggs has been a better player than Urlacher for at least two years now). I agree about the OL but the Bears were lucky to win some of the games they won this year and easily could have blown the final game against the Lions. They're not a good team.

I don't miss Marshall at all. If we get a couple of better players in here to play WR, be it Wallace or Jennings and a kid in the draft, Marshall discussions on here will be a thing of the past.

fin4life,

They may take Lotulelei, they may take Smith, they may take Jarvis Jones or they may trade back and stock up on picks. Lots of options for the Chiefs and with no Luck or RGIII this year, it might be hard to find a trade partner.

Heck, Marino was a diva. Didnt bother Shula one bit.

Monte that is the reason that I don't see Bowe coming here. I just hope that the fins don't make the mistake to pay Wallace 10 + million. That is Brandon Marshall and Fitzgerald type money and his has not proven to be Brandon Marshall or Fitzgerald yet. Most of my Steeler friends seem him as a # 2 receiver in this league.

The Bears would love to have our OL. And I've never been impressed with Cutler. He's very mediocre in my book.

Orlando,

I tend to trust fans of both the Chiefs and Steelers and they don't feel Wallace or Bowe are worth it. Not saying they're not talented but are they worth $9 mil a year? Don't know. Jennings is the guy I want. Armando has said he's almost 30 but that isn't old for a WR. And he's said his play has dropped of the last couple of years. That's mostly because he's been injured. I don't believe the price tag will be as much as the other two and he's worked with Philbin before. Seems like a good fit.

My problem with Bowe is he's inconistent and disappears when it's really needed, which has always been my knock on Marshall too.

all rumors here in kc are reid will look to deal for alex smit. no chance they take a qb number one, will look to move down. those dl picks have been awful, pioli was a moron. jackson could be cut and dorseys a free agent they dont care much for

Michael Irving was not a saint and yet the Cowboys won championships with him under Jimmy Johnson' watch. Irvin was also very demanding of the football but they found a way to make it work.

Orlando Dolphan | January 08, 2013 at 10:15 PM

I also remember Aikman in the media saying he wouldn't tolerate that kind of talk out of Irvin and he was the one who decided who got the ball. In Irvin's defense he knew when to keep it quiet and not rock the boat. Also remember Irvin on the sideline screaming encouragement at his teammates not offering to beat someone up Coaches included. I get your point but 2 very different animals and ways of approaching things.

I by the way disagree with Mando I believe strictly as players Marshall is in another League compared to Bowe. Im not just saying that I've followed Bowe from his LSU days and he's good but not Marshall who when on his game is a great player and I didn't like the trade but understood this is a guy who can destroy a Locker room T.O. style. It's a shame but he is what he is.

Orlando, we have enough cap space that an extra mill here or there doesnt hurt us. Its time to pay for the players we want.

dusty,

I believe tha cap hit in SF next year is $12.5 mil for Smith. No way do I see SF paying him that to back up Kaepernick. I expect he'll be released and available to whoever wants him.

They may take Lotulelei, they may take Smith, they may take Jarvis Jones or they may trade back and stock up on picks. Lots of options for the Chiefs and with no Luck or RGIII this year, it might be hard to find a trade partner.

Craig M | January 08, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Finally someone other than me talking Jarvis Jones, serious baller! The way Geno Smith shows out in his Pro day is the wild card here. I see alot of reports were some see Cam and others Terrell Pryor so we will see but I can see someone coveting Lotulelei in a trade.

Fin4life,

I totally agree with your point that Bowe is not in the same league with Marshall and neither are any of the other free agents in this draft.

I beleive that with the weak schedule we had the fins would have been in the playoffs if Marshall would have been here. With Marshall here teams would not have stacked the line which really hurt our running game. Marshall just opens up the offense. The losses to the Jets, Bill, Cardinals, Colts were all close. I think that Marshall would have got you at least 2 of those games. That is just my opinion.

LOVE Jarvis Jones!!! Wish he fit into what we're doing here. Closest thing to the guy in Denver I've seen for a bit and love that guy too.

well kc will want him then. wheres all those fools that wanted to draft teo now,lol

all rumors here in kc are reid will look to deal for alex smit. no chance they take a qb number one, will look to move down. those dl picks have been awful, pioli was a moron. jackson could be cut and dorseys a free agent they dont care much for

dusty bottoms | January 08, 2013 at 10:28 PM

dusty,

Didn't know you were in K.C. nice City had to go there once over to Seaboard Marine H.Q.'s. As someone there you know Dorsey is a 3/4 DT not DE and Jackson isn't terrible. I just never got taking D.Poe with the talent at hand besides them there have been to many players on that team to play such abysmal Football seems a losing Culture has festered.

fin if the chiefs draft number one they most likely take the ol from a@m

Craig,

I agree with not paying Wallace all that money, he is not worth it. Prior to last year Bowe was impressibe but the bad QB play hurt his numbers last year. The KC offense was awful. I like Bowe but I am not sure I would pay 9 million for him either. He is certainly a diva and I don't think Philbin wants to deal with the headaches. My concern with Jennings is that the Packers are not willing to give him 6 million a year to stay there and they are just going to let him walk. If he is not even good enough to be a #2 receiver in GB, why would we want him. Is he damaged goods with all of the recent injuries.

So is Wes Welker the answer at a reasonable price?

I still can't beleive that we gave up one of the best receivers in pro football for Egnew and a 3rd round pick. Is that Ireland's worst move to date?

Has anyone thought about trying to trade for Percy Harvin in Minnesota. Spielmen owes us one does he not?

I also like the thought of Boldin from Baltimore. Probably a cheap solution to imporve our targets.

Maybe Boldin and Philbins boy from Greenbay?

I also would try to get Freeny from Indy. Imagine him and Wake together.

I hope we fix WR and CB/FS in free agency so we can spend that first pick on one of Alabamas Hogs. Not very sexy, but man that boy Warmack (even like his name) could help make Bush and Tanhill much better. especially if you get Long Back (which I think we will franchise)

In my humble opinion the WR are not Blackmon quality this year. We need as many shore thing players as we can possible get those two linemen from Bama are as close as you get.

The CB from Bama will be gone so second best is one of those linemen

Go Dolphins!

Craig,

I think that a very good pass rusher is going to fall to us at 12. I hope that Ireland pulls the trigger. I love Jarvis Jones also. Other pass rush studs that may fall to us include Dion Jordan, Bjorn Werner, and Mingo. Any one of those guys could turn out to be dynamite. The strength of this draft is on the D-Line. We need play makers on both sides of the ball. Take a receiver in FA and then take more receiving targets (WR or TE) in the second and 3rd round.

LOVE Jarvis Jones!!! Wish he fit into what we're doing here. Closest thing to the guy in Denver I've seen for a bit and love that guy too.

Craig M | January 08, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Your 100% right in your comparison great pass rusher with cover skills complete every down OLB and would fit great but don't see him dropping to 12 and if he does consider it a gift and he would fit in nicely type of player you can move around at both OLB spots causing all kinds of trouble.

Shula,

I have been raving about Warmack for a long time. I saw that kid drive players 7 yards off the ball last night. He was a man among boys. Resigning Long and adding that kid to the line would open up massive holes for our backs and would give T-hill the protection he needs to find open receivers.

Warmack is a beast. Several mocks have us taking him with the 12th pick. If we don't take a pass rusher with our 1st pick then taking that guy would make me extremely happy.

Beleive it or not I actually saw a mock draft that had Jarvis Jones dropping to us and taking him. It appears that there is some kind of back concern with him (I beleive is genetic not an injury) that may allow him to drop a bit. I hope that he drops down to us because I think that he will be a big time pass rusher in this league and an immidiate contributer his rookie year.

The strength of this draft is on the D-Line. We need play makers on both sides of the ball. Take a receiver in FA and then take more receiving targets (WR or TE) in the second and 3rd round.

Publicado por: Orlando Dolphan | January 08, 2013 at 10:53 PM

Agreed here! Another draft strength is the Safety pos. check out the group coming into the draft. I've been saying it for sometime the draft is stacked D heavy with the cream of FA on the O side and would approach them both targeting much like you posted we seem to see eye to eye here!

Orlando, we didn't use the third round pick for Marshall on Egnew, we used it on Vernon.

Ross operates like a parapeligic 5 miles out in the ocean.

I still can't beleive that we gave up one of the best receivers in pro football for Egnew and a 3rd round pick. Is that Ireland's worst move to date?

Posted by: Orlando Dolphan | January 08, 2013 at 10:47 PM

I dont know. 3 picks for D Thomas and drafting Pat White, Chad Henne, and Ryan Tannehill seem just as bad.

Orlando, Craig M,

I LOVE Jarvis Jones there was talk of him going back with QB Murray to make a Title run and the minute he declared I was all over it. If he fell to us he would change the dynamic quick on D.

The Dez Bryant debacle wasnt very flattering either for Irescum.

Cheddar or Gouda?

actually jackson has been really bad for kc, be interesting to see if they flat out relase him like the fans want. dorsey is probaly gone as free agent. orlando that marshall trade could of been a great one, they got 2 third rounders for marshall, who has still never seen a playoff game, and they took egnew instead of hilton with first one. if he takes hilton we have already replaced him with a younger and cheaper very good starting wr plus have another 3rd rd pick for him. either way marshall was a joke, guy is not what we needed

Fin4life,

There is a lot of value in the OL also. The only one I would consider taking with our 1st pick would be Warmack because I think that he is simply the best player in the draft.

However, if we gave up Long to free up some cap space to go after a FA WR and a FA TE that would work. There is plenty of good RTs in the second round . DJ Flucker RT from Alabama may be available with our first pick in the second round and every time I see him he is dominant. He certainly was last night. Taking Jarvis Jones in the first round and then DJ Flucker in the second round would work for me.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

most mock drafts have us taking k.allen wr from cal

fin4life,

I've read many places that Jones is better suited for a 3-4 defence. Have you read that? What's the concern with him not playing DE for us in a 4-3? Is he not big enough? Can he grow into the position?

Orlando,

Love the kid Warmack too. I wasn't responsive to the kid in the first place but how can people be against adding good football players to your team. Nobody is saying guard is our biggest need but it ABSOLUTELY is a need on this team. I watched the game live in Buffalo and their DL dominated ours. It was the same in the game against the Niners and the Pats. It doesn't always show up in the 'sack' category but it was clear in the Buffalo game in Buffalo and in the last game against the Pats that our RBs had nowhere to run.

dusty,

I think Ireland should have traded up to get the TE Allen that ended up in Indy. Where did he go? Second round? Third round? I really like this kid and I think he has a chance to be a better TE than the Stanford kid they took as well. Once again, Ireland's reluctance to acquire that pass-catching TE has been one of his achilles since he's been here. I think he thought he had one in Egnew but I'm not seeing it. He absoultely has to have a pass-catching TE in that offence this year....no excuses. Now I don't know if it's the Stanford kid this year or a guy like Cook from Tennessee or Davis from Washington or Finley from GB. Going with Fasano and the cast of characters they had this year again, should be a fireable offence IMO.

Orlando, we have enough cap space that an extra mill here or there doesnt hurt

Monte | January 08, 2013 at 10:31 PM

Hmmm??? Maybe I should send Ross a letter??

taking a mu te is always a bad move. they never have to block in college

Craig,

Those that don't think the O-Line is important need to see that Bama game last night. Warmack, Jones, and Flucker play with an attitude on that O-line. They man handled ND. A dominant line will open up holes for your back and protect your QB so that he can make plays. It is clear that Philbin does not have the Guards for his system yet. Incognito and Jerry were often blown up by opposing D-linemen. Our running backs often did not have a chance when they were handed off the ball. The D-linemen were already in the backfield. A combination of Pouncey and Warmack would take care of that immidiately.

Orlando,

I get really tired of hearing the dumb argument 'OL don't score points' or 'who was so and so's LT or C this year'. Absolutely moronic comments!! It's clear from looking at the really good teams in this league that if you can't protect your QB and give him the time he needs to make plays then you're not going to win. That's part of the reason I'm such a big fan of going after pass rush in the first round. Drafting ANOTHER CB doesn't stop Tom Brady from doing what he does. Getting in his face and throwing him off his game is the only way to beat him. Too many games Brady has all day to throw. It's why the Pats, Niners, Packers and Steelers are in the playoffs every year. People want to say it's because of their OL but if their QB had no time to throw they'd never be able to do what they do. This point can't be argued.

true for most part craig, outside of green bay anyways. gb ol is horrible
