Steelers will probably let Wallace test free agency

Part of the converstion about free agency on this site has involved Mike Wallace. And that conversation has assumed that Wallace will actually be available despite the fact the Pittsburgh Steelers can use the franchise tag on him or re-sign him between now and the March 12 opening of free agency.

Well, today there is some clarity on that assumption straight from the horse's mouth.

Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert met with the local media today and cleared up several questions. He said it was "very doubtful" the club would use the franchise tag on anyone.

So there's that.

And he made the point that the Steelers are not worried about their free agents going out into the market to test the free agency waters.

"We won't know what an individual player costs until he gets out there," Colbert said.

That means Wallace will be on the market in all probability.

Colbert also made the point that the Steelers "are not married" to any player. Actually, he piggybacked on that by adding that Pittsburgh must change the roster from the one that got them to 8-8 because to be different you have to, well, be different.

Change is coming to the Steelers. It looks as if Wallace might be part of that change.

And at the very least, he'll get a chance to test free agency.

Im on the fence about this guy, he just seems fast maybe too 1 dimensional for me..

jpao (from the last blog),

I think a lot will depend on what kind of money guys want. But assuming everyone keeps their demands reasonable her would be my plan:

First guy I would resign is Bush. I'm not sold on either Miller or Thomas to be the lead back and I think if you let Bush go, you'll have to draft another guy 4th round or later or add a vet. None sound that appealing to me. So a short 2-3 year deal at around $4.5-5mil a year, should do it.

I'd also resign Hartline. Somewhere in the $4-6 mil a year price range, again for 2-4 years, sounds about right. A lof of would depend on whether we can get other guys signed but I'd be careful with this one.

I'd want Jake Long back on a short, incentive laden deal, again for 2-4 years. If money got too crazy I'd let him go. I wouldn't sign him for any more than $5-8 mil a year. If he's healthy he's still a top 5 LT in the league. If you don't resign him, be prepared to overpay in FA or draft an OT high. Will he agree to this? I have no clue. I'm giving you my wish list. If it gets too expensive....NEXT.

Then I'd want Jennings, at the right price. Maybe a 3-4 year deal. I don't know what the market is going to be for him but I wouldn't want to get too crazy.

I'd look at a guy like Cook from Tenn or Finley from GB or Bennett from NYG, and again, if price wasn't too bad I'd sign them. Cook is a guy I really like.

I'm so-so on Smith. If he kept the price down, I'd be Ok with that but I don't think he will. So move on.

I'd go pass rush in the first, hopefully WR and TE in the second and S and OG in the third.

The rest you can fill in as you go.

What do you think?

A player like wallace would bring exactly what this team lacked all season long, a threat. Someone who need to a safety over the top which open up hartline if he returns. I would also like to see what happens with Bolden in baltimore. I keep hearing he might be out due to the money he is owed next season. I would rather have him than jennings. I say fix offense through Fa and fix defense through draft.

Other teams trash is always a concern! Look at Jake Long...Should we keep him? If we don't then there is a reason! Same goes for Wallace! Just saying...

Need a QB in the 1st or 2nd rd.

Clue (from the last blog),

If it's about All Pro awards and stats, Marshall's your guy. Me, I prefer guys that actually help their teams win and I prefer it when my GM doesn't have to spend $50 mil on a guy too. Marshall's never won anywhere he's been and he's gone through 4 coaches in 6 years. It must be a coincednce. I prefer the approach that Ireland and Philbin have taken, which is, let's actually fin a guy that can help us win in the draft and won't cost us $50 mil.

If Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib drops to the third round we have to take him. He's gonna be really good.

I wasn't too crazy about Wallace esp given the money he will want but I am warming up to this idea. Sign him and Bush and make this the fastest offense in the NFL! That could be our angle. Then Philbin's fast paced no huddle offense will make sense. We can also draft a WR in round 2. I hope we draft a pass rusher in round 1. This will also help solve our turnover issue. One of the reasons we don't cause more is there is no pressure on the other offense to score more since we can't score that much. That pressure will force the opponent to take more chances which will create more turnovers.

Free agent WRs rarely ever work out. Occasionally they do well, but not the level they are expected. I would advise against any expensive star free agent WR. Other free agent players are a different matter.

Best receivers get drafted, and get accustomed to one system.

Look for Ireland to pick 2 O-Lineman, A 2 D-lineman and a punter the fins first 5 picks, Look for a washed up RB, and 3 ex cowboy players for free agency.
Sad but true.

This is really no news. The erception that the Steelers are not 100% sold on Wallace being top 5, or slightly lower, #1 wr grade has been out there for the last two seasons. So much so, doesnt seem theyre willing to franchise either.

Also consider, at 8-8, the Steelers could also be looking to be a "player" in this year's draft for a wr 1st or 2nd rd. This draft has some "very good" wr's available 1st and 2nd rd.

So why would they be too concerned about paying far higher to retain Wallace? Tell, you what, let's see if if Bellichik's a major player for Wallace's services this offseason. Let that be your clue.

My big board in order would start like this:
1. J.Jones OLB
2. D. Moore DE
3. B. Werner DE
4. D. Hopkins WR
5. B. Mingo * OLB

Just the receivers big board. Next to each name is the round I’d consider selecting them — Yes, yes, I know that they may not be available that late, but if I’m GM, that’s where I’m OK with selecting them.

DeAndre Hopkins 1st-2nd
Corderelle Patterson 2nd
Da’Rick Rogers 2nd
Tavon Austin 2nd
Quinton Patton 3rd
Robert Woods 3rd-4th
Justin Hunter 4th
Tavarres king 5th
Roy Roundtree 5th
Keenan Allen 5th
Terrance Williams 5th
Markus Wheaton 6th
Roy Roundtree 6th

oops. liste ROundtree twice. He should be 6th, not 5th.

I would hate to see the Patriots get Tavon Austin. Just an observation.

I know you hate it, but imo, our 1st 3 picks need to be 2 wr's and a TE. That's if we're looking to hugely score points anyway.

Also, if we allow Jake Long to walk, sign Brandon Albert and Andy Levitre. Still having a plan to draft an olineman 1st or 2nd rd in 2014.

Also I think Oregon LB/DE Dion Jordan is a very strong possibility for us in round one.

Wallace has propensity to drop balls like the B Marshall....I'll go 4 the draft with the 12 pick very good receiver will be there,..hope Philbin made the selection and Ireland don't make it

Ireland Says The Same Thing!!

And He Gets 100 Post by Mando!! That Ireland Doesn't Know What He Is Doing Because He Hasn't Resigned Our Free Agents!!

Mando, remember You Are Writing For Home Team!!

Think About This Sometime!!

Because Your Mood CERTAINLY CHANGES!! When You Write About Someone Else Other Than Ireland!!

Not Saying I Would Like Happy Dolphin News!! All The Time!!

Just To Put A Positive Spin On It!! Sometimes!!

Unless we pick up Hopkins in the 1st, there is no WR talent that is polished first round caliber.
Chase a bad@ss DE or OLB in the first, then there's several 2nd-3rd round WRs to choose from. All of which would be terrific upgrades.

This offseason is our best chance to create a playoff bound year. Free Agency is a must. It will negatively impact next year if the Dolphins don't make one big blockbuster move. As a Dolphin fan since 82',I want to see this team add play makers in the offseason. Let's start building an offense to suit our QB and offensive personell. We made no moves last season, and it was an utter disappointment. If I had my choice, I would take Jennings. His presence in the locker room and on the field will help our younger players develop. Plus, Philbin knows his strengths and weaknesses further than any FA WR out there.

Please get over yourself, youre not an analyst. Your supposed big board only mirrors that of real analyst who are getting paid real money.

Where's your "check stub" for putting this together. Please get over yourself.

Polished? And we're supposed to take this from your very "UNPOLISHED OPINION" right?

Also really no need to chase a olb at #12. We're a 4-3 defense, in this defense pass pressure primarily comes from the DE's. At times you can blitz your olb, but mostly in disguising blitzes that can come from other diffrent positions.

In a 4-3, the olb is mostly expected to be a beast in the run game and in pass coverage.

Stop attaqcking me. You'll spoil "The Love Boys/Gang of Duffus" fantasy that you and I are the same poster.

You dont want to spoil thier fantasy do you? LOL...

Now I remember the reason I don't post here much anymore.
Thanks ALoco for the attempt. Doubt it will matter.

Don't let them bother you man, your analysis is wlcome here any time. I actually agree with a lot of what you've said.

Tell me again about pass rush in the 1st round, because that's how I would go too. I notice Dion Jordan isn't on your list. What don't you like about him? Are you really sold on Werner?

What would you do in FA? I think there has to be a WR and TE, no?

JSLA is a wind bag reclsussive who lives on the mountain top of his own making. He looks down on his land of idiots, never realizing he's the idiot looking up at those he's looking down upon.

JSLA is a self-awarding blowhard. The IRS should be auditing him for fraudulenly claiming "UNEARNED CREDT".

JS, werent you in that circle jerk clique with Ohio Dolfan? Please go back no one missed you when you were over Ohio blog

Youre even worse than JSLA. Your eyes are closed shut with crusty sores and so is your brain. LOL...

Craig = Village Idiot

Sure thing YG. Anybody else you don't like?

I am totally sold on Werner, yes. But admittedly, I know zero about Dion Jordan. So, he's a maybe, but I don't have any research to say yeah or nay. My guess is the injury will drop him a round or two, so he may be a steal for someone - perhaps us.

And I do expect our OLBs to pass rush, cover runs, and passes all well. Our current ones do 2 of the 3. Some do only 1.

Dumbass, analysis are made of basis of fact. You can post a dumbass opinion and call it an analysis.

An analysis is based in fact, not opinion dumbass. LOL...

Miami isnt sniffing Werner unless trading into top 5. His stock has risen on the draftboards "of the professional analysts".

P.S. What took you so long to get here "circle jerker"? We ewxpected to see you long ago. Please go back, we dont circle jerk over here. LOL...

Good to hear about Werner. I'm warming up to him. BIG need on this team, IMO. I like Jordan quite a bit actually. I think he's going 10-15. Be interesting to see what the Jets do. I like Moore a lot too but I think he'll be gone when we pick.

Dumbass, I told you about Werner weeks ago. Boy is your head up your a s s. Now that your fellow circle jerk JSLA is here, now the news is revelation to you. LOL...

Can we all stop arguing and get along? A great man once said "la la la look k k k, we c-can all get along" and that was Rodney G King. You know the guy who changed the LAPD motto to "We treat you like a King"? Did you guys know he really started his own beating? Yeah, it's true. The Highway Patrol who pulled him over asked him what he was doing in Lakeview Terrace that evening and he replied "Beats the hell out of me"!!! Ba-rump-rump.

Will you cut it out. No matter what you post, "The circle Jerkers/Love Boys/ Gang Of Duffus" will still belive that you are me. LOL....

Craig = Village Idiot

Craig, I agree that Moore, Werner etc will prob be gone by our pick, however, ya never know how things shake out. Heard a radio personality talking about the top picking teams needing QBs, and wanting to trade down since there's no QBs worth picking that high. I have no faith that Ireland would trade his extra picks, but .. who the heck knows.

Listen to that prophetic and beautiful statement by the GM ... "we are not married to any individual player". Except for the QB, that is the way it should be. That's why the Steelers are the all time franchise. What matters is the logo on the helmet, not the name on the back of the jersey. if a player wants to be part of it, great. But if he puts himself first and prices himself out, then you replace him with someone else. And on it goes .. and one the franchise goes. Same helmet, different names.

That is the approach we should have with free agency. We need the positions, not the players.

I made piece with this idiots, it lastly shortly, before they begn to come after me in "masked attacks". I ignored it, and ignoring it only increased the the voracity of attack.

They claim they want peace on the blog, but thats far from true. Waht they actually want is an entire "free blog" where only 4-5 "circle-jerkers are free to blow absolute smoke up eachother's a s s e s. They only want to grease and stroke eachother.

Wow! Now the "circle jerker Mark is here.

This blog has now become a "circle jerk reunion". LOL...

“If we don’t change a roster that produced 8-8, we’d be silly to expect a better result.”

Another quote from the Steelers GM earlier today.

Agree with the statement. Wish I had more confidence in the rest of our GM's positions.

I believe this draft, unlike any other in a long time, really doesn't have consensus top picks. When you look at the mocks, guys are all over the place with their picks. I believe there will be lots of surprises and some players may even drop.

All of tyhe other circle jerkers are here. Where's Phony78? LOL...

Craig. Agreee there. I have never seen a wider range of rankings. It'll be a fan circus for alternating cheers and boos.

Guys, check out "THE NFL : A Bad Lip Reading" — A Bad Lip Reading of the NFL on youtube.

It's hilarious...

DuHHHH.......... idiot! Andrew Luck and RG3 were drafted last year. Is there anymore "BRILLIANCE" that you would like to enlighten the fine folks on here today? LOL....

Here's What Circle Jerking Looks Like:

CraigM and JSLA just blew smoke so far up eachother's a s s it coming from both thier ears. LOL.......

Really? They are not tied to Big Ben? hehehe

You'll never see a circle jerker "disagree with the other".

Remember you heard it here first! LOL....

Awwwrighty. As fun as it is watching a monkey fling poo, I got some work I'v ebeen neglecting.
Thanks for the convo Craig Mark, and Aloco.

Mark in TO,

It's amazing to me that this team and their fanbase think they are smarter than everyone else and will do things their way. We see it every year, whether it's the Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, Raiders....doesn't matter. None of them have Super Bowls any time recently and we're in that club too.

So why aren't we copying the teams that are REALLY successful, instead of following the ways of the Jags and Bucs. 'Cause we continue to take shortcuts and easy answers and it all blows up in our face. I actually think Philbin will be patient and will stick to the plan....the GB plan.

r ya'll gonna repeat the same chiz 'til draft day?
and after the draft repeat the same chiz 'til ota's,?
then repeat the same chiz 'til preseason?
then repeat the same chiz 'til the opener again+again?
then repeat the same chiz and start talking 'bout the draft in oct. like every season?
