Part of the converstion about free agency on this site has involved Mike Wallace. And that conversation has assumed that Wallace will actually be available despite the fact the Pittsburgh Steelers can use the franchise tag on him or re-sign him between now and the March 12 opening of free agency.
Well, today there is some clarity on that assumption straight from the horse's mouth.
Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert met with the local media today and cleared up several questions. He said it was "very doubtful" the club would use the franchise tag on anyone.
So there's that.
And he made the point that the Steelers are not worried about their free agents going out into the market to test the free agency waters.
"We won't know what an individual player costs until he gets out there," Colbert said.
That means Wallace will be on the market in all probability.
Colbert also made the point that the Steelers "are not married" to any player. Actually, he piggybacked on that by adding that Pittsburgh must change the roster from the one that got them to 8-8 because to be different you have to, well, be different.
Change is coming to the Steelers. It looks as if Wallace might be part of that change.
And at the very least, he'll get a chance to test free agency.

Hopkins is slower and smaller than Pattesron, projected late 1st round. Bailey is tiny. I like Patterson. he'll go first. Screw Diva Wallace.

Now people are calling Wallace and alpha receiver LOL
Never, was. Never will be. Those who think he is the WR we've been waiting for will be disappointed.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 07:16 PM
Wallace is so great Pitt gave the other guy a contract and are ready to let Wallace walk. What does Pitt know LOL? dusty knows better.
Neva | January 17, 2013 at 07:05 PM
You obviously barely follow the NFL. Everybody knows that Antonio Brown signed the exact deal Wallace turned down when he threatened holding out till week 10 of the Season to get credit towards FA. He decided against it and came back the week before the start of the Season and late in the Season was hitting on all cylinders when it counted leading a comeback in Dallas. The deal is back loaded with base pay in the average of 3 Mil for the 1st 3 Yrs. of the deal and know inked bet Pitt. wishes a do over.
Posted by: fin4life | January 17, 2013 at 07:19 PM
I don't hear much about it, but when it comes to FA Ireland missed the boat on Anquan. I guess his last few years would have been wasted on our team anyway.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 07:20 PM
Neva,
I didn't mean to call Wallace an alpha reciever. I was saying that Ireland and Philbin may take him that way because he held for money from Pittsburgh.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | January 17, 2013 at 07:21 PM
fin,
You obviously barely follow the NFL. Wallace tested the market at his self inflated value.
He got zero offers. Zero. Even I got that many LOL.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 07:22 PM
neva again, are u really this dumb. he wasnt a unrestricted free agent. no teams were gonna give up picks or just let pitt match.
Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 17, 2013 at 07:26 PM
Dumb will be the team that overpays for him. Wait and see. You have to be dumb to think he would be the answer on our team. Dummies succumb to the media hype. Look, think, don't just swallow whatever they feed you.

Dusty,
You beat me to it and yes Neva is really that dumb!
Every team knows the Steelers don't place the premium cash at WR and he could be had in this off-season without the compensatory #1 given the money involved. It's why Santonio Holmes and Plex were allowed to leave in their primes. Look up the deal Antonio Brown signed and read the fine print and you will understand why Wallace didn't like it. The #'s sound great but it's completely back loaded
Posted by: fin4life | January 17, 2013 at 07:33 PM
Just sign, of the available FA TEs, the best that can strecth the field for Fasano who is an excellent blocker. That the most efficient way to go at the TE deficit we have.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 17, 2013 at 07:33 PM
Wallace is a good #3 WR. He is no where near the top 15 in this league yet he wants to be paid in the top 3.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 07:33 PM
The most difficult for a TE is to learn how to block well.

The only thing I'm feeding on is what my eyes feed me and I have no problem with him taking those slants or bubble screens 60 or 70 yards to the house in the process making Bush look slow!
Posted by: fin4life | January 17, 2013 at 07:36 PM
All better than Wallace
Calvin
Wes
Fitz
Andre Johnson
ROddy White
Steve Smith
NIcks
Jordy Nelson
Julio Jones
Anquan
Marshall
Just off the top of my head..

The team he is on knows something about football. They also know Wallace better than anyone else. They don't share your enthusiasm. I wonder why?

Imagine if we acquire Jarmichael Finley and Egnew develops into a stretch the seam TE also with Fasano blocking. Broder! A la NE.

A #3 WR???? REALLY???? Do you watch any Pitt. games or do you make this stuff up as you go along, I'm done whatever!
Posted by: fin4life | January 17, 2013 at 07:40 PM
I just saw an interesting stat for those of you proposing we spend a high draft pick on a pass rusher.
We had 37 sacks. We were about middle of the pack and tied with Pittsburgh.
The Falcons,Pats,Seahawks,Redskins, and Texans had fewer than us. All playoff teams and two of them still alive.
The Cardinals by comparison led the league with 58 and had a horrible season.
I think with better corners with tighter coverage and the possibilty of Odrick, Misi, and Vernon continuing to improve we could get our total beyond 37.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | January 17, 2013 at 07:40 PM
Wallace better than:
Hartline
Bess
Binns
Etc
Point is he would be our number! We need wr help. Hard to get immediate impact wr in draft!
Posted by: Stevet | January 17, 2013 at 07:42 PM
Well if Wallace is as high as you all think, wait and see who pays what for him. Money talks.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 07:45 PM
Well, Dolfan Rick, get Jarius Byrd, then.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 17, 2013 at 07:45 PM
I wouldn't have a problem with that Oscar. Along with maybe Jennings and Dustin Keller.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | January 17, 2013 at 07:50 PM
Strongly agree with your last statement, Dolfan Rick.

Unless your brain dead you would know the Steelers let Plexico Burress walk in his prime and got rid of S.B. MVP Holmes a Yr. later and all of it is due to the premium they put in certain positions and money invested on their D. I'm done posting about it your right he sucks! Our #1 WR is head-n-shoulders superior and by the way your top NFL WR's group is a thing of beauty! Some great names on there from the last decade, no doubt, I feel like it's 2007 with some of those names thanks for the nostalgia and no doubt all better than AJ green.
Posted by: fin4life | January 17, 2013 at 07:56 PM

Posted by: oscar canosa | January 17, 2013 at 08:01 PM
Truthfully Rick would like to have most any of the players that alot of us have been mentioning on here.
Keller
Finley
Jared Cook
Fred Davis
Wallace
Jennings
Bowe
Byrd
All would be upgrades. I just want to upgrade the positions that need upgrading and not create more holes. No team has a pro bowler at every position.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | January 17, 2013 at 08:03 PM
AJ Green, thanks. See I told you I left out some.
Here is my point. We need a true alpha receiver. NO FRIGGEN WAY is that Wallace. In his own words he thinks he is worth Fitz money. I don't see it happening.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 08:07 PM
Wallace?
Joey Porter was supposed to solve all the problems on defense.
Be careful what you wish for.

There is NO excuse whatsoever in these Times to be not Educated. No, because I'm a Negro and don't get the best Education in the Ghettos, No, because I'm an American and we don't get the best of the General Educations of the World. BS. You ALL have Internet now and all the knowledge of the World from the Past, Present and sometimes Future of the World at your fingertips. You just have to look for IT.

No sense in getting a top receiver until we have a QB. We learned that from the Marshall Henne experience.

Oh boy! FYI to Mando. Good top flight WR's are not going to come to a 7-9 team that is in utter disarray.
Heck, if Wallace had a choice he'd probably go to the Jets instead of Miami.

Dolfan Rick
I was just focusing on Pitt to Miami trades.
V Jax had a fantastic year.
P.S. I really don't care for the Bucs.
I am a Dolphins fan.

Once again the Dolphin fans are talking draft when the playoffs is still going on.
DON'T Y'ALL GET TIRED OF THIS CRAP?
I mean really? Every year we say next year. Next year shows up and we talking draft in mid January by then.
I refuse to accept this team until they go to the AFC championship game. All this other "hope and change" dreaming nonsense is just a waste of time to me.
Posted by: JackSparrow | January 17, 2013 at 08:24 PM
Jack, I agree. Its going o be hard to get any FA's unless we substantially over pay them.

Tim,
I live Lakeland. My wife is a huge Bucs fan. I really don't dislike them unless their playing my Dolphins.
I really kinda like their GM though. He's been kicking butt the last few years with the draft and free agency.

Good for you, Lance, good for you. Do you know how to become more Educated than you are now? You are going to need it.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 17, 2013 at 08:31 PM
Dolfan Rick @ 8:14 PM,
Interesting that you should mention Vincent Jackson's impact in Tampa Bay. In 2011 the Bucs scored 287(18ppg). 2012 they scored 389pts or 24.3ppg. An increase of 6ppg.
On the other hand, in 2011 we scored 313pts or 19ppg. Thats with Brandon Marshall.
Without Brandon Marshall, we scored 289pts or 18ppg. So, without Marshall our scoring only dropped 1ppg. Actually we barely missed Marshall(1ppg differential). While The Bucs scoring went up 6ppg.
Still the Bucs finished 2012 with the exact same 7-9 record as us. Thier defense was horrific, they gave up 25ppg.

You see, someone else realizes Wallace is not going to be our savior.
Posted by: Neva | January 17, 2013 at 08:34 PM
YG4E,
I think they are very simular to us. Young and building. I just hope we end up having the better QB.
Right now i think they have the best GM hands down. We play them next year. It should be a good game.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | January 17, 2013 at 08:38 PM
Nothing but an elite QB will be our savior.
Posted by: NJPHIN | January 17, 2013 at 08:39 PM
Some are lazy on it, others don't know how to search for the proper knowledge they need. Overall, We would say, the Majority will continue to be fukkked as they are being done now.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 17, 2013 at 08:40 PM
BTW I'm not sure I would have paid V.Jackson 40 million. I think the Bucs were so far under the cap they were required by the league to spend big last year.

Your right Santonio Holmes took a gun into a Pitt. night club with teammate Ray Lewis and shot himself in the leg while a member of the Steelers, LMFAO!
Posted by: fin4life | January 17, 2013 at 08:44 PM
Dolfan Rick,
Here's another stat for you. In 2012, Brandon Marshall had 118 catches, over 1,500, and 11 tds.
Yet, Chicago scored 375pts without Brandon Marshall in 2011. They only scored 353pts with Brandon Marshall. That's a little over 1ppg more that Chicago's offense scored without Marshall in thier offense.
The Bears also made the playoffs in 2011 without Marshall. Then failed to make the playoffs in 2012 with Marshall.
Marshall may have posted career highs with the Bears in 2012. But overall, he wasnt very healthy for thier offense. They actually averaged 1pt less per game with Marshall and his career highs.
