Steelers will probably let Wallace test free agency

Part of the converstion about free agency on this site has involved Mike Wallace. And that conversation has assumed that Wallace will actually be available despite the fact the Pittsburgh Steelers can use the franchise tag on him or re-sign him between now and the March 12 opening of free agency.

Well, today there is some clarity on that assumption straight from the horse's mouth.

Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert met with the local media today and cleared up several questions. He said it was "very doubtful" the club would use the franchise tag on anyone.

So there's that.

And he made the point that the Steelers are not worried about their free agents going out into the market to test the free agency waters.

"We won't know what an individual player costs until he gets out there," Colbert said.

That means Wallace will be on the market in all probability.

Colbert also made the point that the Steelers "are not married" to any player. Actually, he piggybacked on that by adding that Pittsburgh must change the roster from the one that got them to 8-8 because to be different you have to, well, be different.

Change is coming to the Steelers. It looks as if Wallace might be part of that change.

And at the very least, he'll get a chance to test free agency.

Well the Bucs had the kinda draft last season that we need this season. Their first 3 picks were on the all rookie team.

Mark Barron
Doug Martin
Lavonte David

I would take them all on the Dolphins.

WOW! Brandon Marshall has as many TD's as Tannehill?

I guess he meant Plax.

I'm going to stop talking WR since some of you are convinced the pos. neither helps make us better or the available talent would be at best a #3 on our roster. I guess the idea is signing Hartline to a big 6 Yr./50 Mil. deal and going WR in RD-1 at 12 to plug in day-1 in a strong draft class, dripping sarcasm!

Cutler had only 19 tds, 11 to Marshall. He had 255 completions, 118 of them to Marshall. Nearly half of all of Cutler's pass completions were to Marshall.

Marshall avg 8 catches per game. This means he had to be targeted 12-15 time a game because there's going to be incompletions and at least 2-3 Marshall drops.

15 times a game is an awful lot to target one wr just to pad his season stats. LOL..

I think thats precisely why Sherman and Philbin didn't want Marshall. They want the formations and scheme to dictate where they throw the ball not a big mouth WR.

You still got to have recievers who can get separation though. I think maybe Jeffy sold them on the illusion his acorns could do that.

I guess he meant Plax.

Yes, he said it's the reason the Steelers let Burress go, still LMFAO!

Like the time when Vincent Jackson was playing in Carolina and was arrested for D.U.I.

Until JI goes I doubt we will be able to sign any marquee free agents. He's a low baller and not trustworthy in their eyes. Take Ryan Clark for an example. Pretty sure he's a factor why Harbaugh didn't come here either. Sure Wake and Bush we're nice "acorns" but we need bigger fish, like we used to get. There was a day when we got any free agent we wanted. I sure miss those days.

Clark, some player with an attitude not worth basing an opinion on. Dansby came, Marshall came. Pay them and they will come. It's a business more than you realize.

Some of you should realize, not all players want to make the playoffs. It's more work. More hard training, and their bodies are already beat. And they already make enough money.

Based on the premise of the woeful impact Vincent Jackson and Brandon Marshall had on their teams playoff hopes I have seen the light regarding the importance of a top notch WR in the game today! The Lions should cut Calvin Johnson immediately after stinking up the joint on a 5-11 team without mentioning Larry Fitzgerald, show that bum the door!

I know Cutler is better then a Henne or a Tannehill but is he even an average QB? He's definitely not a franchise QB IMO.

Dolfan Rick,

I wouldnt be surprised if the Bears new hc, supposed offensive guru Mark Trestman, will soon be looking to ship Marshall out. Of course, it has to approved by gm Emory.

Great offenses are usually nevr one man shows. Its about "all of the pieces" coexisting and working well together.

In considering the importance of playoff tested WR's maybe we should trade our 2013 #1 pick to Baltimore for Jacoby Jones, I mean did you guys see that 70 yarder with :30 ticks left and the kick returning!

Youre reading my previous post all wrong. Jackson had a great impact. He helped improve the Bucs 2012 ppg total by 6ppg. I was only comparing the impact he had vs Marshall and showing we missed Marshall virtually none at all(1ppg difference).

Vincent Jackson had a nice impact in Tampa. It was thier defense that let them down most.

The moral of the story is...

The Lions were the Lions again this year because Schwartz doesn't have a clue, seriously.

Baltimore blew the lid off that D because Champ aint Champ, no more.

I think there'll be a run on Pass Rushing DE's and Cornerbacks right out of the gate when the draft opens up. That may cause Ireland & Philbin to use their #12 overall pick on the best available DE or CB. They don't want to be left out in the cold at either position and may have to reach because of it. But, we do have enough picks to move up if needed. It will be interesting to see what happens this off-season. I still think they take 2 WR's in this draft. Ireland loves to double-down on a position of need. And, that's even if we get a FA WR! Unless, they get 2 FA WR's, then he'll take just one in the draft...but, I'm just speculating anyways. Like everyone else here...

Holy Sh*t there'll is a word.
Darrell is NOT going to happay about this.

The Lions are a team no one can figure. Any given season they can finish 4-12 or 12-4. With injuries and lack of self discipline, they seem to be a team fully capable of kickung its own a s s as well as its opponent's.

The Bears won most of their games this year on account of their D

If Ireland does this 1st rd, consider it more room in the fan club for you. Im jumping ship!

Injuries for the most part should be a non factor overall. All teams have injuries. Of course, the fewer the better. Lack of discipline is all on Schwartz. Better coaching and the Lions would be crushing it.

Remember when Parcells snubbed the Falcons and refused their job to take ours instead? Poor Atlanta had to settle for Dimitrioff as their GM. We take Jake Long and then they follow up with Matt Ryan. At that time we all thought we were going to be the team playing in the championship game this weekend. It's amazing the different directions these teams have taken. One team has been super successful in the draft getting their franchise QB in year one, hitting on draft picks in the later rounds. The other team has missed on practically all of their early picks, and have not found any gems in the later rounds. I'm sick of rooting for a loser. Do or Die for Jeffy

Well if Ireland or whoever doesn't think FA's like say Bowe,Finley, and Golston with rookies like Corradelle Patterson,Jonathan Banks and an o-lineman like Warford won't upgrade our team their on drugs.

Schwartz is supposed to be a defensive minded coach. He was on the defensive side of the ball before becoming a hc. Yet his Lions defense gave up 437pts last season.

Crazy thing is that, man for man, the Lions completely blow us away as far as talent on the defensive side of the ball. Still we gave up only 317pts. Thats a 120pts more.

Your pretty good with those stats dude. I don't have that much energy anymore.

I just watch the games and piss and moan like a good dolfan.

Say no to Finley. We dont need another guy on this roster with the label "inconsistent". Say no to Cordarrell Raterson. Dont need any more guys labeled "huge upside". Its very rare these type guys reach that "huge upside tag". Thier usually more "hugely ordinary".

Bowe is considerable. But I would like a "dynamic #2 wr" with him. Warmack has protection issues. Sure he looked good against ND. But the knock on is his pass protection. If at all possible I would rather see us sign fa's Albert and Levitre.

Golston and Banks I dont have a clue who they are. LOL...

Dolfan Rick,

YG since you are so good with arithmetic tonight, please tell us how many time you expressed your love for Teo and then tell us how many more times you are going to change your mind about who our first pick should be.

In 2012 you changed your mind 17 times, which was two more than in 2011 when you changed your mind only 15 times.

That is 32 times you laughed at others for not agreeing with you even though you don't even agree with yourself for more than 3 days.

New Math,

Or should we say, "Armando Saguero", Youre busted son! LOL...

I was actually taking about Larry Warford OG Kentucky (rd 2 or 3)and Joanthan Banks CB Miss St (rd 1 or 2).

Oh and I meant free agent corner Goldson of the 49ers.

I'm not saying those players precisely. I'm just saying were 7-9, we've been losing for years,we've got 50 million to spend and 5 top draft picks. We need to upgrade our team.

I remember the year we got Richmond Webb and Keith Sims after several bad previous drafts. In an interview afterwards Shula said "I felt like it was time we stood up be counted for" and remember thinking. "What the hell were you waiting for"?.

ARMANDO,THE DROPOUT ...............

New Math is Armando. Look at the way the 10:05 post is put together. No one here posts so "professionally".

This post was put together by a "professional". Armando, how do like my "new math" now son? LOL...

YG Is Armando.

For Sure, Oscar and Armando are Close.

Aloco Is Oscar.

I Can See Where People Get These 4 Confused.

Dolfan Rick,

I actually proposed using both 3rd picks on oline in my mock. So if a guy like Warford is available I would welcome it. My mock suggests drafting a og and ot with the 3rd rd picks.

I would still like to sign vets Albert and Levitre to start. I would like to add olinemen with bot 3rd picks for depth. Our oline depth is pretty atrocious.

On the oline, we need at least 2 more higher quality starters and at least 2 more to present better quality depth.

So All The NFL HC Jobs!! Have Been Filled!!

Some With Good Coaches Others With Suspect Coaches!!

KC and Arizona Did A Good Job!! Even The Jags and The Browns!

I Don't Know What The Bills Were Thinking?!

Chip Kelly Finally Makes It To The NFL!!

I Say 2 Years Before He Is Exposed!!

The Eagle Situation Is Not An Easy Fix!!

And Love What The Jets Have Done So Far!!

Dolphin Rick,

My deal, unlike other posters, is how can you say a defense 5th best in points allowed warrants a 1st or 2nd rd draft pick? Just doesnt make sense to me.

If we averaged 25ppg, we easily win 10-11 games this year. the defense only gave up 19ppg while the offense only scored 18ppg.

Looking at these numbers, I can not for the life of me see where the defense is 1st-2nd priority over this wretched offense.

I've Been Here The Whole Time!

Please Don't Act That Dumb!!

It's Not That Hard To Tell My Writing!!

Nevermind, That I Still Use Dashi In My Other Names!!

Armando busted himself with the 10:05 post. Oscar doesnt write like that. But Armando trolls you too. I believe Armando wrote the 10:05 "NEW MATH" post.

The Broncos were on a pretty good roll Aloco. They just ran into the Ray Lewis retirement train. With so much parity in the league sometimes its all about momentum and motivation.

The question is can the Ravens score enough points to beat Brady?

I Was Tricked Into Saying The Colts Will Go All The Way!!

I Thought John Fox!! Was a Real Coach!!

I'm Conflicted Though!

My Hate For Brady Doesn't Allow Me To Pick Them To Win!!

So I'm Giving My Kiss Of Death To The Ravens!!

YG @10:27!!

You Probably Are Correct!!

Checked Him Quick!!

No Wonder You And Mr.Salguero have Beef!!

I agree with you totally on the defense. I think our d-line is one of our strengths which why I hope we can keep Starks.

I do think we are thin at CB though but so is the draft. I guess it all depends on what we do in free agency.

Dolfan Rick,

Ravens beat the Pats during thier regular season meeting. 2 things I like in the Ravens is:

1. I would take Flacco over Shaub anyday
2. Gronk's out

Also, the Ravens wr Torrey Smith showed Sunday he's a real baller. He took "old" Champ Bailey to the woodshed. LOL...

3 recievers really coming into their own this year. Julio Jones, Dez Bryant, and Torrey Smith.

I had Dez in fantasy this year and he and Gronk and Rodgers helped me win 600 bucks.

Had a little help from Reggie Bush too.

Dolfan Rick,

I also believe we're much better off giving our offense the "TOTAL OVERHAUL" it needs this offseason.

Then, in 2014's offseason focus on fixing "EVERYTHING NEEDING FIXING" on defense.

Piece-mealing trying to do a little of both every season will consistently cause "new leaks" to spring up on both sides of the ball. For once, lets just fix one side of the ball before moving on to the other.

The Signal @12:46 PM

I know he was restricted and the compensation would have been a first round pick if I remember correctly. Any team that was close and figured to be in the playoffs may have found that an acceptable value considering he's a veteran and ready to contribute now. I really thought the Pats would grab him in the summer. Their first rounder is always going to be in the high 20's-32.

I think the GM's have a bit of an unspoken rule about not signing RFA's.

Dashi promised me a Denver win and other good things.

Master Plan to better the Fins...

For FA's

WR Wallace would be my first choice. (Speed for days!) I would tab Jennings if Wallace can't be landed.

I would pick up Cook the TE from Tenn.

Sign Bush and Long to market value incentive laden contracts.

Sign Sean Smith as long as he is reasonable. If not I would move to grab CB Rogers-Cromartie if available. If z e change up and tab the Safety Byrd from Buff.

Me personally I would draft G Chance Warmack from Alabama. He will go to the Pro Bowl. He is an absolute beast mode guard and YES he is good enough as a G to go at 12. I am seeing Mocks of him going way earlier to Ariz. The pick is not sexy but Warmack may be the best player in this draft on offense. No, he doesn't score TD's but sure as hell helps Tannehill throw them and allows Miller to charge into an actual created hole in the Def.

I would draft CB David Amerson or TE Ertz in the second. A triple tandem of Cook, Ertz and Fasano would rock.

I would draft WR Stedman Bailey or WR Tavon Austin in the third.

This would be my master plan. There would still be enough draft picks left to grab players for the Defense.

A loco,

On The Colts Game?

My Bad! It Was Just A Game! Dashi Was Going With His Heart!! Not His Brain!!

On Your Feelings?

I'm Sorry!! You Shouldn't Have Started It!!

Now, On These Conference Games!

I'm Still Going With My Heart!!

And To Prove A Point!! Defense Wins Championships!! And MLB!! Is The Leader Of The Defense!! So It Automatically Makes It The Most Important Position On Defense!!

Even In The AFC!!

Mayo Is Better Than Lewis!! Right Now!! Not All-time!! Just Right Now!

And The Pats Have Brady!! Which Is Already Potent In Itself!!

On Te'o!!

I've Said So Myself.

Isn't it COOL! how a footBall is pointed at BOTH ends! This makes the BALL easier to THROW! It goes FARTHER! And it bounces FUNNY! You need to have quick reflexes! The pointed BALL was INGENIOUS!!!! You can sit on them TOO!
