Steelers will probably let Wallace test free agency

Part of the converstion about free agency on this site has involved Mike Wallace. And that conversation has assumed that Wallace will actually be available despite the fact the Pittsburgh Steelers can use the franchise tag on him or re-sign him between now and the March 12 opening of free agency.

Well, today there is some clarity on that assumption straight from the horse's mouth.

Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert met with the local media today and cleared up several questions. He said it was "very doubtful" the club would use the franchise tag on anyone.

So there's that.

And he made the point that the Steelers are not worried about their free agents going out into the market to test the free agency waters.

"We won't know what an individual player costs until he gets out there," Colbert said.

That means Wallace will be on the market in all probability.

Colbert also made the point that the Steelers "are not married" to any player. Actually, he piggybacked on that by adding that Pittsburgh must change the roster from the one that got them to 8-8 because to be different you have to, well, be different.

Change is coming to the Steelers. It looks as if Wallace might be part of that change.

And at the very least, he'll get a chance to test free agency.

ALoco's impersonator has been impersonating him "for years". He's grown quite accomplished at impersonating ALoco.

The impersonator has gotten so good at, that it looks like "the real ALoco" is impersonating the imposter at times. Hell, sometimes I cant even tell the dofference. LOL...

You guys can write it down....we will target one or ALL of these FA WR hard....and I expect we will sign one...

Can you write it down? Just in case you run out of TP...

Also, It seems the "FAKE ALOCO" usually mispells far more words than the "real ALoco. Its like he "PURPOSELY MISPELLS" words.

He always writes in "ALL CAPS" simply because thats what the "real ALoco" does. "EVERYONE" knows this. LOL...

I see the Gang of Loverboy's are in full bloom tonight.

LOL YG, Gotta get some ZZZZZZs, You Boys play nice Iam Out .

target number 1 wallace

So what youre saying is that its most likely Oscar is a Herald employee "being paid" to create hits here, right?

Then Armando chips in by "impersonating you", right?

YG4E = ALoco
And depending on what day it is, vise versa.

Do you predict rain before the draft?

This is the quote from him that, to me, really speaks volumes -

“If we don’t change a roster that produced 8-8, we’d be silly to expect a better result.”

In my day folks didn't run around impostering, bashing and ridiculing each other.

Target wr in fa? BS! Better target 2 olinemen. Target 2 wr's and a TE with the first 3 picks.

How soon you all forget we're in the same division as Tom Brady. So you had better "maximize" your qb's protection bringing in vet olinemen. Draft the two best wr's possible and TE possible.

You are not closing any ground on Brady unless you can "score lots of points". To do this you better be able to consistently keep your qb upright. That alone give the recievers more time to get open.

needs colts gm, he said they have over 40 mill to spend and will try for everyone they need

We can sign both Wallace and Jennings in fa. But if serious upgrades arent done on the oline, and Im not talking rookie olinemen, who's he going to consistently have time to throw to?

Actually, right now we only have 2 olinemen, Martin and Pouncey. Incognito might have 2 more years at best. Manyfailed to mention, after Jake Long, Incognito's play has slipped most.

Sign two vet olinemen(I already mentioned names) and go after 2 wr's and a TE 1st 3 picks.

2014, add 1 more olineman with high draft pick(2nd rd). Maybe Pass rush #1 pick in 2014.

As far as db's, if your offense is powerful enough to put a lot of points on the scoreboard. That alone masks some of your db defficiency.

You can get by with avg to slightly avg db's if youre a high scoring offense.

we need secondary badly, new wave. take the bama corner

I thought you wanted Teo.

Ive had a "WINDEX MOMENT". The "windshield" is much clearer now! LOL...

Wallace has a bad case of the dropsies kind of like Marshall had when with us.

From something that I read Today, anonymous posters on Internet will hve to identify yourselves in the very near Future. As it should be.

Also, even in my T'eo moment, I wanted "all offense" after that.

I was also "pieved at Dansby" for dropping two sure pic 6's during the year. U see much more clearly now that my anger for Dansby has ebbed. LOL...

I would be happy if they signed Jennings. Like Clue said in the first post, I'm on the fence as well about Wallace. They seem to have no problem letting him walk and he was part of 8-8. Sign Jennings and reunite him with Philbin. Sign a RG in free agency as well. Then get a quality corner.

Draft DE 1st, ZACH ERTZ!!!! 2nd, RT or WR with 2nd, 3rd get whichever you don't take with last second (wr/rt), 3rd safety. Don't care after 3rd round but would like to see a QB taken if there is a worthy project in the late rounds.

I'm not going to pretend to know who the college players are (besides Ertz) so I'll have to put my faith in our scouting department and GM. Ouch.

Identities of any poster on any Blog in the world will be checked. The purpose is to eliminate anonimity or falsehood.

Wallace is not an alpha receiver, never will be. He is a complimentary receiver, not what we need right now. Wrong time, wrong player.

I mean, we are all a Big Community. We should get to know each other personally. No? Internet provides that capacity.

Why some of you think Wallace will come in here and tear it up is beyond me. Wishful thinking. He'll get some grabs, but not going to be a game changer on our low power offense.

Despite what Armando thinks, none of these FA's WR's are what we need.

We are better off going oline in FA and using the draft on WR, TE.

Ok, you take a RT in the draft, what to do with Incognito and Jerry? Jerry's at the barest of minimum is a starter. After Jake Long, Inconito has shown the most regression.

But Incognito's regression is more due to age. We're watching him grow old right before our very eyes. Expect Incognito be even a little less productive next year.

We actually have 3 oline positions that need to be addressed. We need to properly address at least 2 of them this year to have a chance at seeing good qb play from Tannehill in 2013.

Also I was relieved to read the posts and especially Armandos blog finally calling Ireland out for his biggest blunder in the past two or three years ,( leave me alone Craig! I know you don't want us to blame him beyond two years so know I'm only giving him half the blame :) which is his OBVIOUS inability to recognize WR and TE talent. I've been harping on this since last off season!

I thank Armando for putting it in print and I hope he will keep up the pressure. Maybe even a big story for the sports page using examples and some comparisons.

I mean he knows we need talent at these positions and he has done nothing except admit that he's only good enough to find four's, five's and six's. Throw that into the story too! Don't know why reporters didn't call him out for that. He said it as if he were a first year GM who was handed a bad roster.

Hopefully some of the others are right and Philbin will have more say and can help Ireland get his head out of his a%& regarding this matter.

I think YG imitates my ideas. Good, that way he doesn't have to flip so much.

ESPN: Wallace would rather retire than play for Phins

Oh well.
Legadu NayNay, Anthony Armstrong, Jabar Gaffney, Patrick Turner and Clyde Gates are all unemployed.

In 2012, when Long wasnt breaking down on the left side, it was Incognito. He's going into his 9th season and has never threatened to make pro bowl. So even what he has given will begin to wane.

This is what I saw last season. Exactlyu why I say sign two fa olinemen, let this be Incognito's final season, and draft an olineman 1st or 2nd rd in 2014 to completely replace him.

Then in 2 short seasons the whole oline is totally revamped for at least 3-4yrs. During these years, Tannehill and the draft revamped recieving corps will become a point scoring machine.

Cogs has at least 2 or 3 more quality seasons minimum. We don't need to replace him just yet.

Cogs may not have made a Pro Bowl, but he is a top 10 guard, good enough for now, we have greater positions of need.

Youre as dumb as Armando. The highest wr pick has been 3rd since Ireland's been here. Thats not a big blunder, as in he cant pick wr's, its a huge mistake in thinking late rd acorns are going to be star wr's.

The blunder with Turner, only wr picked as high as 3rd rd, was thinking a guy who wasnt even a starter on his college team(USC) would have more pro success.

Ireland was following Parcells "failed mantra" that you dont draft wr's high. In today's nfl mantra, its totally outdated team building philosophy. You better get them via fa or draft.

No SB winner has an all pro bowl cast. Some of you want to boot anyone who is not elite. You will never have a team of 80% probowlers. You are chasing something unattainable.

Just shedding light on Cogs is declining to. Just for those whom think we only need 1 olineman this year. We need two, but based on 2012, Cogs may need to be repalced in 2014. I think he has 1 more decent year left(2013) but will show more decline this seson.

That's a high salary Incognito carries with him. Perhaps if we can draft Warmack's companion things will alleviate.

Judging only by this one season, I'd say Martin is better suited to RT. Maybe he can build up to a good LT, but he is not there yet.

Yeah that's why I'm advocating sitting on Incognito for one more season. If they don't sign Long ( I'm fine with that) than Martin moves left and we need to grab a RT. I don't see any in free agency that I like so I would take one in the draft. And then upgrade from Jerry because I want someone on the right who can pull with Pouncey. Jerrys too big and slow and even if he lost some weight he's kind of slow. I think Pouncey will take a huge leap this year and push closer to a pro bowl. And if Martin can play as well as he did at LT with Stanford then together they will be able to mask Richies aging issues for one more season possibly allowing us to use our first pick on a premier pass rusher.

Imo it is vitally important for us to have consistent pressure opposite Wake. It will make our whole defense better obviously. And I think we are in position to grab the best one in the draft.

IMO, this is the best overall wr class 1st thru 2nd rd, then slightly into the 3rd rd. Wr classes usually dont have this mch depth. No Fitzgeralds or Calvin Johnsons, but overall very good.

These type overall classes dont come often. If we dont take advantage this year, it may be a while before the opportunity presents itself again.

We need at least 2 olinemen, lucky for us that can be taken care of in fa. These are a combination of two great things for us. We only need take advantage of them.

How to handle the Long situation:

I will make a guess and say he will accept less than top $ to stay with the team that drafted him #1 overall and gave him more than he would have gotten had he been drafted later.

Negotiate a reasonable contract with incentives and outs in case he doesn't perform...then if he does perform, use him as trade bait. We can't just let him walk for zilch.

Truly, the 1st and 2nd Rounds are the important ones. After that, you must crapshoot.

I agree @ 9:01

Everyone's talking Warmack. He's an outstanding run blocker but isnt as outstanding pass blocking. He isnt a lousy pass blocker, but a far superior run blocker.

In the nfl you are not going to consistently dominate d-lines running the ball the way the Bamma oline did in college. You guys are getting lost in the "puff of the fluff" here. LOL...

I'm going against popular wisdom here. I don't think any of these FA WR's are worthy of a big price. Let's draft our own WR's.

Didn't Wallace try for a big pay day last offseason? I think he had zero offers at what he thinks his value is.

I woud sign Levitre and Albert to at least 5-6yr contracts. That way we're not caught up renegotiating them close to the same time as Pouncey/Martin. Which anyways should mark the last nfl contracts these two would have anyway.

I would like to see where all of the GMs in the league have taken their wrs in the draft and how many of them are now conyributing before I buy that. We have no TEs and no wr that would be better than a 3rd on any good team.

And Armando is right on but I can't speak for him. I couldn't care less what round Jeff has picked them in. It's a blunder that our GM has a starting rookie QB and he has no one to help him at the most important positions. He hung him out to dry this season, in my book that's a blunder. Fortunately he now has a chance to fix that mistake.

You might be right , YG, but Philbin is making emphasis on this zone blocking which we have no G that is adept at it. IMO

You know that you are far to lazy to do this much research. Youre not even willing to go back 10yrs to be closely correct in your assessment "lazyass". LOL...

Well, I will retire for now as YG is becoming insulting.

Phins is from the Y generation, lazy, illiterate, blindly ignorant. What they consider smart is anything above retarted.

I don't think we have a shot at Levitre, it looks like the Colts are going to make a hard push for him. He is a zone blocking machine though and would fit perfect in our system. The problem becomes we most likely would have to over pay him . I'm sick and tired of seeing so much money tied up in the offensive line while we go out and sign other players on the cheap. I know how important a good oline is but in saying that I also look around the league and see the best teams invest far less in the line than we do. Albert might be easier and cheaper to grab.
