« No. 1 Dolphins free agent must re-sign? Brian Hartline | Main | My take on Ross, Wallace, Jennings, Bowe »

Stephen Ross gives his state of the Dolphins

Stephen Ross just met with the media for about 25 minutes. The gathering was meant to have the team owner give you his opinion on the state of the Dolphins.

"I feel we're on the right track," Ross said. "We're moving in the right direction. I feel good about it, really, more so today than I have in the past."

Chief among the people Ross is most pleased with is rookie coach Joe Philbin.

"I was really impressed with coach Philbin," he said. "I think we can safely say, I heard it from so many people, and more importantly I feel it, we have a really solid head coach here -- a guy that I think will be here a long time and a guy I hope will bring  us those victories everyone wants."

Ross has obviously bought in on Philbin. He said later, "we have our coach," but on the subject of quarterback Ryan Tannehill he's more discerning. He said in the same breath, "I think we have our quarterback."

"The good outweighed a lot of the bad here," he said. "We have a coach that will be here and we have the makings of a quarterback that will be here a long time that has a lot of great potential. When you look at it from that standpoint, there's a lot to be positive. Certainly, I look at it from that standpoint today."

I asked Ross if he could tell fans, you, that after four losing seasons the Dolphins will do everything they can to win in 2013, starting with an aggressive offseason.

"First of all when I bought the team and I told everybody, all the resources we have, that I have, I want to build a winning team. That goes first," Ross said. "I think Jeff and the whole organization knows that. This isn't one of those organizations that just slaps it together to keep it together just for the sake of doing that. I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to build it. I think sometimes people look at spending as a way of winning. In business, it isn't money that solves problems, it's brains that solve problems. But certainly all my resources are there. If the right players are there, I don't care what it costs, we'll go after them."

I like that. But later Ross said he believes in building through the draft and then kind of dumped on free agency.

"As the coach stated, you want to build through the draft. You certainly want to see what's out there in free agency and you want to get the right player that will fit in the locker room and will bring the right kind of ingredients and is still hungry and isn't signing for the big contract. Free agency certainly isn't the answer. We've all seen that. You can talk more about the failures of free agency more than you can about the successes. And everybody gets all excited when you sign a player, my God we're going to win, but I can't think of a player you can say that really happened with. You know your players better than anybody else. And you know who you want to sign and keep as part of that. And often times there's a reason a guy is out there as a free agent."

Hmm. I can think of free agents that have helped. Drew Brees in New Orleans, Peyton Manning in Denver, Michael Turner in Atlanta, Reggie White and Charles Woodson in Green Bay, Plaxico Burress with the Giants, Wes Welker with New England. Jonathan Joseph in Houston.

Just off the top of my head.

Look, I believe in building through the draft. But I also think the Dolphins have been terrible at using free agency the past two offseasons. They've gotten basically no help. And that's not good.

General manager Jeff Ireland attended the gathering and frankly, several reporters seemed to not want to ask the question you want asked: Why is Ireland the GM? So there was this question about how certain Ross feels about those atop his organization?

"How in life are you ever certain?" he answered. "You take it one day, you look at it, and you deal with the people. Our people are pretty level, consistent people. That's one thing you can say about our organizaton. I believe they have the talent to deliver day in and day out. But this is a business that's measured like no other business in the world. It's measured in wins and losses. But you want to see the direction we're going and how it's moving. And it's important to have not a volatile situation. And I think the type of people we have are not volatile type people."

Well, enough beating around the bush. I asked Ross to explain to fans why Jeff Ireland is the GM. Ross knew the question was coming. Ireland knew it was coming. Nothing personal.

"I think his football intelligence, his knowlege, his hard work," Ross said. "I think he has the respect of his peers. He's one of the youngest general managers around. I like dealing with youth and enthusiasm. I think he has the knowlege, the desire and is smart and he's committed. And he laid out a plan. We do have a young team. And if we're right on plan, we're going to be there a long time."

Ross confirmed the Dolphins will have a new logo for the 2013 season. He also confirmed what I reported Saturday, which is the logo will be unveiled in April. More news: The new logo is not the one that was leaked a few weeks ago. That is an early-generation version that has since evolved.

"We're looking at it, finalizing it," Ross said. "It's time for an update."

I asked Ross what the plan is for 2013?

"Win."

Great, but I asked how that is different from last year or the year before. I mean, wasn't winning the plan last year?

"This is really the first time I've really gotten involved. I was handed a situation that, one, I was kind of painted to the wall. If Parcells left that was my fault. If Miami loss that was my fault. And I have a lot of respect for Bill. But I didn't put together that organization. I also felt I should learn a little bit before making any moves. Sometimes making a move for the sake of making a move is sometimes the worst move you can make. So want to sit back and really assess the situation, which I was able to do. So it was good from that standpoint."

I don't know what that means.

WHDP, not to put too fine a point on it, but do you REALLY think Ireland will or should be dismissed for anything next season short of the team making the playoffs (and of course bigger gaffs than we've seen or criminal offenses)? And if the team makes the playoffs, why on earth would he be dismissed?

Bill,

I don't think we'll make the playoffs next year. You look at WR, TE, RB, CB, DT, DE, etc. & this team is not as close as some people think. We're going to lose seven starters to FA & although I only think Hartline truly deserves a new contract--losing that many starters is difficult to replace.

Yes we have $45 Million in cap space but who knows how the money will be used & what holes will still remain??? Right now our RB's are Daniel Thomas & Lamar Miller. Our TE's are Clay who just underwent surgery & Egnew. Our two best WR's are Bess & Matthews. Our best CB barley played this year & the rest of our CB's are a f#cking joke.

And yes...We have 11 draft picks but draft picks are only as good as the players you get. We traded two 3rd rounders for Marshall & so far we used one on Egnew. I'm sorry but picks like that are not going to get this team to the next level.

we're doomed.

So Ross basically said nothing of value.

Atleast ross knows he has much to learn as an owner and about football. Its good he is open minded and not a my way or the highway type owner( jerry jones im lookin right at you). And he has faith in philbin.

Not sure what people expecting him to say but that's pretty much what I expected. He's excited about the coach we have in place and 'thinks' we have the right QB.

Lots to be done and added....on to the offseason.

Ross is a got d a m n idiot. Ireland has been here for 5 consecutive years and we've had 1 winning season and he has complete trust in Ireland. Are you kidding me? Well Im not sure what Ireland has in store for this offseason but if we dont win at least 10 games next season which I doubt since the schedule is much more difficult, SHOW IRELAND THE BOOT!!

"You know your players better than anybody else. And you know who you want to sign and keep as part of that. And often times there's a reason a guy is out there as a free agent."

That's not what I want to hear from an owner if I'm a FA. That seems to be the attitude they took with Ryan Clark & he still seems pissed off about it.

That last paragraph is hilarious! What the hell does any of that even mean? Ross is such an idiot.

I think a lot of fans think it's as easy as just adding a GM and everything falls into place. Well it's not. Two of the most well thought of GMs out there have been on the market for almost a week and I haven't heard a peep that either of them are candidates for GM jobs ANYWHERE. If it was that simple, wouldn't these guys have been snapped up already.

Let's see how Ireland makes out with Philbin coaching the players he adds, rather than Sparano.

Craig,

Like Armando said a couple blog posts ago...I wanted Ross to say:

*That he recognizes the Dolphins are in a playoff drought and he intends to end the thirst in 2013. Or else he'll change direction.

But, he basically said, "Hey I want to win of course, but Jeff Ireland will be here for a long time whether we win or lose. I love Jeff Ireland more than anything in the world."

Revenue Sharing + Depreciation = Big profits for Ross

Im curious, how many wins are needed next year in order for Ireland to keep his job. Please dont post 8 and 8.

WHDPs,

I don't believe FA is the answer either. It's clear that the good teams build though the draft. FA is for filling holes and covering up some of your mistakes. I'm glad the team takes this approach.

There are more than a few here who wanted to keep giving Sporano, Ireland & Henne more time. They continue to do the same with Ireland. Funny how Sporano & Henne bit the bullet but, this twerp is still standing?

Maybe 1 more useless offseason will be the final nail in his coffin. I mean, ANY gm can give us 1 decent player every offseason. The objective is to fill more than that which is what ireland has completely failed to accomplish.

And yes that last paragraph is the least sensical thing I have ever read. I think Ross is lost, and doesn't know how to right the ship. I guess he thinks a new logo will send the Dolphins to the Super Bowl.

Tanne had Exactly the same stats and wins as Henne did in 2009 & 2010.
Mando spend that time telling us all what a bust Henne was.
Now Tanne puts up the exact same numbers and Ross is non-commital.
How is that surprising?

"This is really the first time I've really gotten involved. I was handed a situation that, one, I was kind of painted to the wall. If Parcells left that was my fault. If Miami loss that was my fault. And I have a lot of respect for Bill. But I didn't put together that organization. I also felt I should learn a little bit before making any moves. Sometimes making a move for the sake of making a move is sometimes the worst move you can make. So want to sit back and really assess the situation, which I was able to do. So it was good from that standpoint."

I don't understand this either.

Ross sounded like Sporno, He's just saying what we've been saying for the last 3 years.."ROSS IS CLUELESS", Thank you stephen, I can now look fo some play-offs in 2 to 3 years, after you fire Ireland..

The Local Seth,

We must have gone to very different schools because I did read that in his comments at all.

'You take it one day, you look at it, and you deal with the people.'

That tells me that, everyone is being evaluated as we go and things can change based on progress or lack thereof.

"But this is a business that's measured like no other business in the world. It's measured in wins and losses."

That tells me if the wins and lossed aren't there at the end of the day, then neither will Ireland and eventually neither will Philbin.

I'm not sure what you were reading.

When ross bought the team it was a parcells and co. are part of the package or no deal situation. He walked into a situation surrounded by strangers. Now he has his own coach and people in place. I think ireland is ross's football crutch. Whwn confused lean on jeff.

lol. what did he say about henne?
lol

I don't believe FA is the answer either. It's clear that the good teams build though the draft. FA is for filling holes and covering up some of your mistakes. I'm glad the team takes this approach.

Craig,

I agree that good teams are built through the draft. Just look at the Seahawks, the Niners, the Packers, etc.

But you also why know why teams aren't good right??? B/c they don't consistently draft well. That's us. Not good. 7-9 & the 4th consecutive losing season.

BTW--The inconsistent drafts have been going on long before Parcells/Ireland came to Miami.

7 And 9 the last 3 years..
Is improvement 8 and 8 next year?
Look for the fins to be 10 and 6 in 3 years.
Sorry just MAD..

WHDPs,

Agreed. They have. And we've been giving players away like crazy who were high draft picks, like Satele for a 6th and Jason Allen. Do that often enough and it erodes the talent base.

Ross confirmed the Dolphins will have a new logo for the 2013 season. He also confirmed what I reported Saturday, which is the logo will be unveiled in April. More news: The new logo is not the one that was leaked a few weeks ago. That is an early-generation version that has since evolved.

Who cares about a new f#cking logo??? I guess this is what losing franchises care to focus on...So sad.

I've discovered something even more fun than posting in this blog: Going to sights that are talking about the Falcs and pointing out what everyone, including Matt Ryan, already know: The Falcs will lose to Seattle.

Steve Ross will continue down the Ireland track untill it derails. Ireland is not good enough at his job to keep it, we see it, media says it, so why is Ross keeping him? He mentions stability and a plan, and while I see the stability in keeping Jeffy around I dont see the plan. I mean we make head scratching moves every year and have nothing to show for it. Been this way with this organization forthe past 5 years. Ireland was trained by an old mercenary 80's coach who has never built anyhing of chanpionship caliber without help and now is literally learning the new NFL on the job. Why does Ross have the patience to aford him this luxury? Maybe he is as clueless as everyone states. Here is how I see it going down, Ross will flounder with Ireland and others like him untill he gets bored and tires of the booos that come with his billion dollar toy and dumps it to another super rich jerk in the country club these NFL owners troll.

Falcons are a lock to destroy Seattle. Way too much traveling for Seattle. Back to back East coast trips are brutal.

Technically, Welker wasn't a free agent, he was a trade. A 2nd and a 7th, I think.

WHDPs @ 3:40pm,

TOTALLY agree with your post. Way to much time and energy spent on this logo crap. If we spent half the energy on talent for this team we'd still be playing.

"Agreed. They have. And we've been giving players away like crazy who were high draft picks, like Satele for a 6th and Jason Allen. Do that often enough and it erodes the talent base."

Craig,

Let's face the fact here--Huzienga, Wanny, Saban, Mueller, Cameron, Parcells, & Sparano were all failures. Maybe Ireland & Ross will be as well but Ireland & Ross still has a chance to redeem himself with cap space & eleven draft picks.

Craig-true. If Ross has bought into Ireland/Philbin, what else would he say? Give the guys a chance. We were not so far off this year that next year's a reach. Ireland & Philbin had little chance last year to confer over FA or the draft. We have a full coaching staff now and the input for a willing Ireland should prove to be different and beneficial. If that proves to be not true, I'm sure Ireland will have to find a new home. Maybe Philbin, too.

Ross is the owner of a mediocre team nothing more and nothing less. We'll be 8-8 through eternity with this bunch at the helm.

WHDPs @ 3:46pm,

Yep....agreed.

Looks like the Colts will be picking 24th in the second round. If my math is correct that means we'll have the 56th pick. Not awful. and the 84th pick for the Marsall trade. Time to turn some of these guys into impactful players.

"The Miami Herald expects the Dolphins to "consider making a serious run" at free agent Greg Jennings this offseason.

Jennings knows Dolphins coach Joe Philbin's offense from their time together in Green Bay. It's about as logical an offseason fit we can contemplate in 2013 free agency. Philbin has stated publicly that he doesn't believe free agency is the way to build a team, but the cap-rich Fins can afford to drop some coin on an established wideout, and Jennings would perfectly fit their mold."

Jan 7 - 2:49 PM

Here come the 'logical' rumors....FA can't get here soon enough.

So looks like we're picking:

12th
44th
56th
76th and
84th

Time to cash the chips....

2 watt,
He said, "...and I guarantee you that Chad Henne will win at least as many Super Bowls as Maino did..."

Watta I tell you Armando, was Ross in the military? all you guys got outta him was Name rank and serial number.

ladies and gentleman...we have our 8-8 Miami Dolphins for 2013.

Let us know when Ireland is fired, IDIOT!

We WISH we were mediocre!

Can Ireland give Philbin what he needs to be successful is the question. Last Saturday Aaron Rogers completed passes to 8 different players. Do we need 1 or 2 great players or a bunch of good players. The green bay roster has 7 WR and 5 TE not including RB that can catch.

I wonder with Ireland's track record, how many teams will have kept him for so long...Its like Ross says" In this business you are measured by wins and losses"

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOSING! ROSS IS FEELING THE EMPTY STADIUM! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

"TOTALLY agree with your post. Way to much time and energy spent on this logo crap. If we spent half the energy on talent for this team we'd still be playing."

Craig,

Maybe there are fans who actually care about this stuff but I'm just not one of them.

Ross paid a LOT of money to buy this franchise so the guy can do what he wants but all the remodeling, the celebrities the new designs, the change in TD songs, don't mean jack sh#t unless the product on the field improves. I'd rather he'd be a little more understated instead of being more Jerry Jones/P.T. Barnum but that's me.

A serious run at Jennings would be fine. However, if the offer needs to go through his sister, who thinks Miami is where the rainbow ends, this run has ended. She not only has badmouthed Aaron Rodgers and the team brass through her Twitter account, but has targeted Miami for the big payday. Think she talked to her brother about it a time or two before she tweeted?

The Ross interogation at Dolphin headquarters was a repetition of staus quo.

I vote to schedule THE IRELAND INTERROGATION after the draft.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

The Dolphin in the logo HAD BETTER HAVE EYES. That's all I can say.

"Robert Griffin III will fly down to Pensacola on Tuesday for an MRI with Dr. James Andrews.
Andrews will make a "full evaluation" of Griffin's knee, which was problematic for the final month of the 2012 season. Shanahan otherwise provided no updates. The Redskins sound optimistic that Griffin didn't tear any knee ligaments, but he clearly aggravated his prior LCL sprain and will need plenty of rest time."

Interesting...Dr. Andrews was at the game yesterday in DC so why does he need to fly down to Florida to get an MRI from the same doctor who is already there??? Why wouldn't RG3 have already had an MRI today???

My guess is that RG3 tore something.

I wonder with Ireland's track record, how many teams will have kept him for so long...Its like Ross says" In this business you are measured by wins and losses"

================================================
Who gives a crap what his sister says?

Has Shanahan the criminal been fired yet. I'll not rest until it happens.

We are basically the New York Islanders of the NFL.

Let's see...who will win a Super Bowl first? The Chiefs or Steve Ross?

Oh yeah.....the Chiefs...classic uniforms.

I can't wait to see the clown suits that, in combination with Ross' "leadership", will conclude my 40 years as a Miami Dolphins fan.

"Who gives a crap what his sister says?"

Jordan,

Well said.

5th consecutive losing season coming up. YAWN.

Great Post, Salguero.

I don't know what that means.

Dashi Might Be able To Answer.

Ross was Given Parcells, and Parcells Didn't even Let Ross Have Input on "HIS" Team!! You Guys "The Media" and The Fans, would've wanted His Head if He Got Rid Of Parcells Off Bat!! Ross, Gave Ireland And Spo! A Evaluation Season! He Saw Spo Was The Problem!! And Tried To Get Rid Of Him!! It Didn't Work!! But the Next Season! Mr. Ross and Ireland!! Hired Philbin! And That is The "Organization" Ross Has Set Up!!

On The Sometimes making a Move, is The Worst Move To Make!!

Ross Was Just Telling Everybody!! For all You Guys Wanting Ireland Gone, Think about it if Somebody Else Came!! And Really Bombed!! Keeping Ireland Was A Smart Move!!

And Ireland Comes Very Highly Recommended!!

Yes, Some If Not Most!! Want Ireland's Head!! But Real NFL Exec's KNOW!! Ireland, Can Become a Very Competent GM!

Why Do You Think Bill wanted Ireland In The First Place?

Remember, The Trade was Ireland For Garrett!! Not Spo For Garrett!!

Uni's should be all black (orange/teal trim). The dolphin logo should have a matchstick in its mouth, and some 5 o'clock shadow (like a threatening image). Enough with this girly Miami "historical" crap. We're the ONLY team that doesn't have any cool throwbacks. What happened to the orange jerseys? I went to a home game few years back, vs. Redskins, we were in orange, AND WON! Then there was a Jets or Pats home game (I think), we were in orange, and WON! So WHY OH WHY can't this team where a different uniform for ONE GAME, like EVERY. OTHER. TEAM. IN. THE. LEAGUE? If the Steelers can wear those god-awful uni's, then we can wear the orange jerseys.

Unfortunately Mauricio's 8-8 prediction looks right, but could easily be 11-5, just as this year could easily have been 9-7.
