Stephen Ross gives his state of the Dolphins

Stephen Ross just met with the media for about 25 minutes. The gathering was meant to have the team owner give you his opinion on the state of the Dolphins.

"I feel we're on the right track," Ross said. "We're moving in the right direction. I feel good about it, really, more so today than I have in the past."

Chief among the people Ross is most pleased with is rookie coach Joe Philbin.

"I was really impressed with coach Philbin," he said. "I think we can safely say, I heard it from so many people, and more importantly I feel it, we have a really solid head coach here -- a guy that I think will be here a long time and a guy I hope will bring  us those victories everyone wants."

Ross has obviously bought in on Philbin. He said later, "we have our coach," but on the subject of quarterback Ryan Tannehill he's more discerning. He said in the same breath, "I think we have our quarterback."

"The good outweighed a lot of the bad here," he said. "We have a coach that will be here and we have the makings of a quarterback that will be here a long time that has a lot of great potential. When you look at it from that standpoint, there's a lot to be positive. Certainly, I look at it from that standpoint today."

I asked Ross if he could tell fans, you, that after four losing seasons the Dolphins will do everything they can to win in 2013, starting with an aggressive offseason.

"First of all when I bought the team and I told everybody, all the resources we have, that I have, I want to build a winning team. That goes first," Ross said. "I think Jeff and the whole organization knows that. This isn't one of those organizations that just slaps it together to keep it together just for the sake of doing that. I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to build it. I think sometimes people look at spending as a way of winning. In business, it isn't money that solves problems, it's brains that solve problems. But certainly all my resources are there. If the right players are there, I don't care what it costs, we'll go after them."

I like that. But later Ross said he believes in building through the draft and then kind of dumped on free agency.

"As the coach stated, you want to build through the draft. You certainly want to see what's out there in free agency and you want to get the right player that will fit in the locker room and will bring the right kind of ingredients and is still hungry and isn't signing for the big contract. Free agency certainly isn't the answer. We've all seen that. You can talk more about the failures of free agency more than you can about the successes. And everybody gets all excited when you sign a player, my God we're going to win, but I can't think of a player you can say that really happened with. You know your players better than anybody else. And you know who you want to sign and keep as part of that. And often times there's a reason a guy is out there as a free agent."

Hmm. I can think of free agents that have helped. Drew Brees in New Orleans, Peyton Manning in Denver, Michael Turner in Atlanta, Reggie White and Charles Woodson in Green Bay, Plaxico Burress with the Giants, Wes Welker with New England. Jonathan Joseph in Houston.

Just off the top of my head.

Look, I believe in building through the draft. But I also think the Dolphins have been terrible at using free agency the past two offseasons. They've gotten basically no help. And that's not good.

General manager Jeff Ireland attended the gathering and frankly, several reporters seemed to not want to ask the question you want asked: Why is Ireland the GM? So there was this question about how certain Ross feels about those atop his organization?

"How in life are you ever certain?" he answered. "You take it one day, you look at it, and you deal with the people. Our people are pretty level, consistent people. That's one thing you can say about our organizaton. I believe they have the talent to deliver day in and day out. But this is a business that's measured like no other business in the world. It's measured in wins and losses. But you want to see the direction we're going and how it's moving. And it's important to have not a volatile situation. And I think the type of people we have are not volatile type people."

Well, enough beating around the bush. I asked Ross to explain to fans why Jeff Ireland is the GM. Ross knew the question was coming. Ireland knew it was coming. Nothing personal.

"I think his football intelligence, his knowlege, his hard work," Ross said. "I think he has the respect of his peers. He's one of the youngest general managers around. I like dealing with youth and enthusiasm. I think he has the knowlege, the desire and is smart and he's committed. And he laid out a plan. We do have a young team. And if we're right on plan, we're going to be there a long time."

Ross confirmed the Dolphins will have a new logo for the 2013 season. He also confirmed what I reported Saturday, which is the logo will be unveiled in April. More news: The new logo is not the one that was leaked a few weeks ago. That is an early-generation version that has since evolved.

"We're looking at it, finalizing it," Ross said. "It's time for an update."

I asked Ross what the plan is for 2013?

"Win."

Great, but I asked how that is different from last year or the year before. I mean, wasn't winning the plan last year?

"This is really the first time I've really gotten involved. I was handed a situation that, one, I was kind of painted to the wall. If Parcells left that was my fault. If Miami loss that was my fault. And I have a lot of respect for Bill. But I didn't put together that organization. I also felt I should learn a little bit before making any moves. Sometimes making a move for the sake of making a move is sometimes the worst move you can make. So want to sit back and really assess the situation, which I was able to do. So it was good from that standpoint."

I don't know what that means.

When it comes to stories I don't care about it's the stories about what the owner thinks. You can twist, disect, and second guess everything they say but in the end actually caring about it is a monumental waste of time.

See ya in the next blog.

Why does "everyone" want to know why Jeff Ireland is GM? That's a dumb question if you ask me. Because the Owner WANTS HIM THERE! Geez, get it through your skulls. Like it or not, agree or disagree, but the Owner has complete and utter confidence in Jeff Ireland. So he's the GM until the Owner says he lost confidence in him.

Can we all move on from that question please?

Why does everyone always bring up the fact that Ireland's been here for 5 years? We all know Parcells was calling the shots those first 3 years. Ireland's done a decent job since he took over. I'm sure there's no one that doubts we look better with Philbin and Tanny than we did with Sparano and Henne. As for Ross, he didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but I wasn't expecting him to. What's he gonna say right now that's gonna have any bearing on what we do come March and April? Nothing. So why was anyone expecting anything different? Everyone needs to chill out and wait for Free Agency and the draft. That's when we'll see what this team will really look like.

Why is everybody kicking me. i signed Javorskie lane and richard marshall as free agents this yr. So what if i missed on:chad johnson,jabar gaffney,anthony armstrong,gary guyton,legedu nanaee,les brown,mike rivera,andrew mcdonald,eric steinbach,dustin waldron,ryan mchaffey,shelly lyons,kevyn scott,josh,linam,chandler burden,tyrell johnson,artis hicks,cameron collins,jacquies smith,chas alexcih,terrance brown,jef fuller,trenton hughs,sammy brown.derek moye,jonas gray,jarrell root,josh samuda,andre fluellen.
i mean come on i have an eye for talent, right Mr.ross

It is tough to go through a schedule for next year at this point and predict victories and defeats. We would have penciled wins this year against Indianapolis, Tennessee, and Jets at Home. We would have also predicted losses against the Jets on the road, Cincinnatti, and Buffalo on the road.

We realy don't know how much Tannehill will improve, all the free agent and draft additions, or if any of the teams scheduled for next year will be better or worse.

ross talks about brains but he keeps ireland around 2013 is playoffs or bust...they better resign bush hartline and starks and in free agency sign vollmer jennings and wallace not to mention a super draft db or de in the first round otherwise fans will be screaming once again for cowher or gruden in 2014!!!!

"My guess is that RG3 tore something."

WHDP: well, I guess I COULD say that your guess isn't worth a crap; that physicians want players evaluated in their own facilities on their own equipment -and more. And I guess I COULD point out that you didn't even get the city right -it's Birmingham -where his sports clinic is located, not Pennsacola. But I won't do that. LOL

And From What Ross Said,

ReSigning Our Own Free Agents Seems To Be A BIGGER Priority Than Signing another Teams Garbage!! So expect us To Try and Sign Jake,S.Smith, Starks, Hartline., Fasano, and Probably Clemons! Before Wasting Money On High $$$ FA's!!

Ross Didn't use The Word Garbage!! But He Might As Well Have!!

Again, Please Forgive Mr.Ross!! He is a Bit Aloof!! He's Not Very Charismatic. So He Might Sound A Little Rough at Times!! But Mr.Ross Means Well!!

We Are In Good Hands!! And Mr.Ross is A Great Owner!!

If Dashi Is Not Mistaken!! Mr. Ross is A Long Time Dolphin Fan!! Before He Bought The Team!! One of Us!! He Actually Cares!!

Ross is a billionaire he will figure it out, you dolfans are ridicules. I love the Dolphins, but south Florida isvjoke

I'm through defending Ross........his comments were delusional at best, and manifested signs of pre-frontal lobe dementia at worst.

I cannot move away from "The Question," because I abhor mediocrity, loathe incompetence, and long for the days when the Dolphins were not the leagues's laughingstock:

"Why Ireland?" "Why has he not been fired?".

That simple act would clear the way for the Rebirth of The Fins!!!

Ross will choose unis that exemplify the entertainment value of football. As bad as they have been recently for the home game against the pats they should wear Les Miserables uniforms.

My great pal Dashi is here now.
You Dashi what up?
Get kris and Aloco and oscar canosa and let's all hang out again and talk about the Dolphins yo.

The min Tannehill leaves Texas A&M they get wayyy better. Get rid of Hennehill

POST OF THE YEAR.......

Too much time and energy being spent on the new logo????
I very much doubt that will be what the personnel dept wil be spending their time on, FFS some of you just want ANYTHING to moan about!!!!!

From Ross's press conference I think it is fair to say he said what is expected - he bought the team to win, He inherited a structure that wasn't his(took him some time to realise it- I expect that with someone new to ownership/football)
He has now put what he feels is his team in place to take us forward, to which he is telling everyone he expects results from them and will be constantly evaluating them.
He also admitted he was naive in the past and made some mistakes and feels he has a better understanding of how to run a team.
And importantly he has said he will invest WHATEVER it takes to win if the right players are identified.

IMO ireland has put the team in this offseasons position of strengh for the draft and should get this draft to show whether he is the GM the season after or not.

You really should not build through FA. That is what the Redskins and Eagles did and they failed. Armando points out some good signings but you also have the Redskins: Albert Heinsworth (100 Million), Dion Sanders, Jeff George, Jeramaiah Trotter, Dana Stubbefiled, etc. Then also look at the Eagles signing Vick (100 Million), Asomugha, Cromartie, etc. Armando pointed out some good examples but you really have to be careful.

You have to build through the draft and then add one or two FAs a when you are getting close that fit into your system. You should only be breaking the bank on your own free agents as you already know their character and work ethic and can make a reasonable assessment on whether they will go bad after a big contract. I also think that you add the big free agents when you are a few pieces away. The fins are still rebuilding and they will only be as good as Tannehill this year. I think they have to go into free agency carefully and continue to build through the draft.

the worst mistake that ross did............

PUSH THE TUNA OUT..........

Coherent like a drunk circus monkey. A waste of ink, paper and cyber bytes. Gutless too.

JEFF THE GARAGE MANAGER IS THE WORST GM IN FOOTBALL .....

Caddy,

You are a Disgrace To GM!! Caddy is Suppose to be The Standard. Have You Seen The New ATS. Caddy hasn't Used More Than 3 Letters In A While. Put the Hooptie Away!!

Stick with the Lincoln!! Cause Yo' Ship is Sinking!! You Should Change Your Name To Mercury Grand Marquis! Fits Your style!! Cause You are Not A Brougham!

You Know, Aloco and Oscar have a Personal Vendetta With Dashi!!

I Know You 3 Love Playing Underwater Pool Pigs!! Every Queer For Himself.

Or 2 on 2

Aloco & Caddy

Vs

Oscar & Julio!

First To 10 Wins!!

Aloco I agree Ross should have set-up a swimming pool in one of the end zones and paid the TUNA top dollar to wallow around in the pool and even do Canonballs off a diving platform when the Dolphins scored a touchdown.

( . ) ( . ) MaGee. BEST FORUM NAME EVER!

Armando,

Youre the one who missed on Ross answer about draft and free agency. Ross stated, "There are far more misses than huts". Your comeback was, "what about the Brees', ect...

He never said you cant hit in free agency, he said there are "far more misses than hits". He's correct, you missed the point. Probably for every Drew Brees calibre hit. There are 2 medium impact(thier impact should have been greater hint Dansby, Marshall), then there's that complete fa bust.

So there's really about a 25% chance or less that you hit on a Brees calibre impact player in fa. No matter the position. It's "very rare" that the big money players play to the calibre of money in the contract once they get to thier new teams.

So, if 1 out 4 fa becomes a Brees, 2 becomes a Dansby/Marshall, then the final one becomes bust. It means there hiher chance you get an over paid medium impact player than a Brees type impact player. Then of course there's chance for highly overpaid bust. See Hayneworth.

Ross is absolutely right. But it doesnt mean he's 100% against free agency the way you try and make it appear.

Thank you Rasta.....

Ireland has not done as bad in the draft as everyone thinks. He has pretty much hit on all of his first round picks:

1. Jake Long (4 time pro bowler, early on considered best LT in football).
2. Mike Pouncey (one of the best Centers in football).
3. Ryan Tannehill (may be the franchise QB the fins have bee looking for).
4. Jared Odrick (quality starting DL, very good against run, had 5 sacks this year and selected at end of 1st round).
5. Vontae Davis- (biggest mistake in 1st round, but he is talented; just lacks maturity. Still good enough to get you a second rd pick and he starts for the Colts).

Not too bad for Ireland in the 1st round. We'll see what he can bring in this year with that 12 pick.

KING......

TO SAY ,YOU R BETTER TODAY THAN WHEN THE TUNA LEFT IS A DISGRACE ........

DASHI,

VENDETTA IS A STRONG WORD,I LOVE READING ALL YOUR POSTS .SOME I A GREE WITH AND SOME DON'T .

Aloco Bill the TUNA would have worn his circa 1920s Coney Island swimsuit to entertain the fans that are getting drunk in that endzone and throwing beer cans at Mr Bill.

YG...

ARMANDO IS A MIDDLE SCHOOL DROP OUT ,YOU CAN'T FAULT HIM FOR MISSING ROSS'S ANSWER ..

Aloco Ross would also have to hire pool cleaners because of all the debri that would be tossed at BILL THE TUNA.

HOLA DASHI !

I see you're still trying to educate these guys about Ireland, keep up the good work amigo.

Ross is absolutely right you dont build a team thru fa. You add a final missing piece or two, that get you over the hump as a playoff contender or makes you championship calibre.

There's a salary cap anyway, how the hell can anyone "build a team" thru fa? The salary cap doesnt even allow that.

You build a team thru the draft then accentuate it thru fa. Thats all the the "salary cap" allows. You predominantly build thru fa and end up being the NY Jets.

You cant afford to keep all of the pieces and if you dont win right away. Youre up s h i t creek as a franchise. A capstrapped loser.

KING...

TUNA IS 2 SB WINNER AND A MAN WORTH MORE THAN 100 MILLION..........

BUT YOU THE KING,HAVE ONLY THE NAME , ((KING )).............

And Don't Ask Dashi How You Play That Game!! It is Your Game Not Mine!! Oink! Oink! Biatch!!

--------------------------------------------------------

YG,

Agreed. Signing FA's Is A Risky Business!! Not Just Dansby!!

Let's Go Back to 2008!! When Parcells wanted To Build His Team Thru Free Agency!! And It Bombed after 1 Season!!

Never mind That We Are Still Paying For The E.Wilfork, J.Smiley, J.Groves, and Many Other Horrible Free Agent Contracts!!

Aloco all the fans that are wearing their heart on their throwing arm cant be wrong about DOLLAR BILL

Alpco dont forget your buddy billy the tuna hired the garage manager.

The Irescum frustration is OVERLOADED!! Fire him now!

Ross smh

That new fancy logo is good for 10 wins. We don't even have to play.

DASHI CLAIMS HE KNOWS FOOTBALL,IN THE SAME TIME HE SUPPORTS OUR GARAGE MANAGER WHO DRAFTED A ONE FOOTED PLAYER,TRADED OUR BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER AND SIGNED A PLAYER BY THE NAME JAFFNEY TO RELEASE HIM IN FOLLOWING MONTH.

THE
CELLAR

ALoco,

Armando isnt a middle school drop out. He just assumes most his blog audoence is. Truth is, at least half his blog audience ts still in middle school.

Then 30% are hs dropouts. 10% had 1 yr of city college. 5% actually have college degrees. 2.5% have great "mother's wit(common sense). The remaining 2.5%, a complete lobotomy wouldnt even help.

So Armando plays to the lower mentalities of the highest numbers of his audience. LOL...

KING,

HE HIRED THE GARAGE MANAGER AS LONG AS ,HE'S IN CHARGE ......

WINK
WINK.......HE HIRED HIM TO BE HIS HELPER .

How does Ireland still have a job? I guess performance doesnt matter to Ross.

Ireland has more busts then Dolly Parton!!! LOL

YG = ALoco

Just informing you guys....

Aloco Billy The Tuna(not the Marlin)will become a bookie and take all the loud mouths money on this blog that know how to write a sentence but couldnt pick a winner even if it WAS FIXED.

Aloco,

It is a Vendetta.

Any Little Screw Up! Or Comment That is Outside The Box!! You And Your Boy!! Want To Discredit Dashi!!

It Just Sucks That Dashi has A Very High Pct%! Of Being Right!! So It makes It Difficult To Lambaste Me!!

It's Cool!! Your Criticism, Only Makes Sure Dashi Does His Research!! So I can Try and Be 100% Correct! In What I Say!!

Hey, Even God Isn't Perfect!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Que Vola, FZB!!

Everybody, Dashi Takes It Back!! Dashi Isn't The Only Ireland Fan!!

ALoco, have you ever written a sentence that did not contain at least 3 misspellings of words that are easy to spell?

KING ,

IF YOU NOTICE ,OUR GARAGE MANAGER HAD NEVER HAS TAKEN A PHOTO FOR HIMSELF WEARING A SUITE WHILE HIS BOSS WAS AROUND ....BUT AFTER THE TUNA LEFT HE BOUGHT A SUITE AND TOOK HIS FAMOUS PICTURE WITH A SMILE ...

Seems to me Ross said:
1. I am a businessman first and think you need a good organization with good personnel to run an NFL franchise.
2. I bought the team and didn't know much about running a team. So I spent some time sitting back and learning.
3. I didn't want to make moves just to make moves but learned some things and then made moves to improve my organization.
4. I like the organization I have, the personnel in it, and I think, going forward, we can be held accountable.

Well said YG.

I agree with your explanation on how you build a winner. It starts with that franchis QB, then you add young players that fit your system in the draft, and you finally fit your final pieces through FA when you are ready to contend.

The question is how far along are the fins in their rebuilding process? Are they ready to contend yet? I think that Ryan Tannehill will answer that question next year. Teams have gone from 6-10 to win the Superbowl recently (See Saints), so it is not far fetched. However, you need to have one of the best QBs in football. I think that the fins are a couple of pieces away on defense (a pass rusher and shut down corner). On offense we need one big time play making wide receiver (maybe two assming we keep Hartline), a big play making TE, and a pulling guard (assuming we keep Long). Again, Tannehill's progression is a big key to success next year.

Dashi Isn't The Only Ireland Fan!!

Posted by: Dashi | January 07, 2013 at 05:08 PM

No, all the Jests and their fans are big Ireland fans too!

I like our coaches, now Ireland just needs to give them some talent to coach. This is a HUGE off season for us. I'm pulling for you Jeffery now let's go DOLPHINS!!!!

DASHI,

I HAVE THE MOST RESPECT FOR THE WAY YOU HANDLE YOUR SELF OF LATE,,YOU NEVER RESORT TO PRFINITY,,,,,,,

RICK SON,,,I DON'T GO OVER MY POST B/C I KNOW YOU WILL GET WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY .......

YG.......LOL

Yg, why are you also ALoco?

YG,
I APPROVE YOUR USEAGE OF , (( LOL )) ............

Mike and Mike in the morning were making fun of us keeping Ireland after 4 consecutive losing seasons...

Mike and Mike can go f u c k each other. F u c k em!

Orlando Dolphan,

1 of those guys (Davis, only 3 years on team) isn't on the team, and another may be gone if Jake Long walks...

1st round picks should be on your team for many years. So after 4 years here is what we have left if we part ways with Long like we probably will (which means a #1 overall pick not even going to make it 6 seasons with this team!):

3 starters: a Center who hasn't made the Pro Bowl, a mediocre defensive lineman and a QB who may be benched/cut after next season if he doesn't show improvement. Doesn't look like good/impact drafting to me.

Interesting Stat:

In 2012, Only 1 fa who changed teams last season had a great impact on his team's fortunes as far as his performance.

PEYTO MANNING

The rest range from a hugely overpaid Mario Williams(who wasnt so super), all the way down to complete busts. The grass isnt always as green as it looks on the other side of the fence.

Im not against fa, just have to proceed with "extreme caution".

AGREE WITH DYING BREED,,,,,,,,,,

MIKE AND MIKE ,MY FOOT .THEY AWAYS COME UP WITH THINGS AFTER EVERY ONE AGREE ON AND THEY RIDE THE WAVES OF PUBLIC OPNOIN .
