« No. 1 Dolphins free agent must re-sign? Brian Hartline | Main | My take on Ross, Wallace, Jennings, Bowe »

Stephen Ross gives his state of the Dolphins

Stephen Ross just met with the media for about 25 minutes. The gathering was meant to have the team owner give you his opinion on the state of the Dolphins.

"I feel we're on the right track," Ross said. "We're moving in the right direction. I feel good about it, really, more so today than I have in the past."

Chief among the people Ross is most pleased with is rookie coach Joe Philbin.

"I was really impressed with coach Philbin," he said. "I think we can safely say, I heard it from so many people, and more importantly I feel it, we have a really solid head coach here -- a guy that I think will be here a long time and a guy I hope will bring  us those victories everyone wants."

Ross has obviously bought in on Philbin. He said later, "we have our coach," but on the subject of quarterback Ryan Tannehill he's more discerning. He said in the same breath, "I think we have our quarterback."

"The good outweighed a lot of the bad here," he said. "We have a coach that will be here and we have the makings of a quarterback that will be here a long time that has a lot of great potential. When you look at it from that standpoint, there's a lot to be positive. Certainly, I look at it from that standpoint today."

I asked Ross if he could tell fans, you, that after four losing seasons the Dolphins will do everything they can to win in 2013, starting with an aggressive offseason.

"First of all when I bought the team and I told everybody, all the resources we have, that I have, I want to build a winning team. That goes first," Ross said. "I think Jeff and the whole organization knows that. This isn't one of those organizations that just slaps it together to keep it together just for the sake of doing that. I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to build it. I think sometimes people look at spending as a way of winning. In business, it isn't money that solves problems, it's brains that solve problems. But certainly all my resources are there. If the right players are there, I don't care what it costs, we'll go after them."

I like that. But later Ross said he believes in building through the draft and then kind of dumped on free agency.

"As the coach stated, you want to build through the draft. You certainly want to see what's out there in free agency and you want to get the right player that will fit in the locker room and will bring the right kind of ingredients and is still hungry and isn't signing for the big contract. Free agency certainly isn't the answer. We've all seen that. You can talk more about the failures of free agency more than you can about the successes. And everybody gets all excited when you sign a player, my God we're going to win, but I can't think of a player you can say that really happened with. You know your players better than anybody else. And you know who you want to sign and keep as part of that. And often times there's a reason a guy is out there as a free agent."

Hmm. I can think of free agents that have helped. Drew Brees in New Orleans, Peyton Manning in Denver, Michael Turner in Atlanta, Reggie White and Charles Woodson in Green Bay, Plaxico Burress with the Giants, Wes Welker with New England. Jonathan Joseph in Houston.

Just off the top of my head.

Look, I believe in building through the draft. But I also think the Dolphins have been terrible at using free agency the past two offseasons. They've gotten basically no help. And that's not good.

General manager Jeff Ireland attended the gathering and frankly, several reporters seemed to not want to ask the question you want asked: Why is Ireland the GM? So there was this question about how certain Ross feels about those atop his organization?

"How in life are you ever certain?" he answered. "You take it one day, you look at it, and you deal with the people. Our people are pretty level, consistent people. That's one thing you can say about our organizaton. I believe they have the talent to deliver day in and day out. But this is a business that's measured like no other business in the world. It's measured in wins and losses. But you want to see the direction we're going and how it's moving. And it's important to have not a volatile situation. And I think the type of people we have are not volatile type people."

Well, enough beating around the bush. I asked Ross to explain to fans why Jeff Ireland is the GM. Ross knew the question was coming. Ireland knew it was coming. Nothing personal.

"I think his football intelligence, his knowlege, his hard work," Ross said. "I think he has the respect of his peers. He's one of the youngest general managers around. I like dealing with youth and enthusiasm. I think he has the knowlege, the desire and is smart and he's committed. And he laid out a plan. We do have a young team. And if we're right on plan, we're going to be there a long time."

Ross confirmed the Dolphins will have a new logo for the 2013 season. He also confirmed what I reported Saturday, which is the logo will be unveiled in April. More news: The new logo is not the one that was leaked a few weeks ago. That is an early-generation version that has since evolved.

"We're looking at it, finalizing it," Ross said. "It's time for an update."

I asked Ross what the plan is for 2013?

"Win."

Great, but I asked how that is different from last year or the year before. I mean, wasn't winning the plan last year?

"This is really the first time I've really gotten involved. I was handed a situation that, one, I was kind of painted to the wall. If Parcells left that was my fault. If Miami loss that was my fault. And I have a lot of respect for Bill. But I didn't put together that organization. I also felt I should learn a little bit before making any moves. Sometimes making a move for the sake of making a move is sometimes the worst move you can make. So want to sit back and really assess the situation, which I was able to do. So it was good from that standpoint."

I don't know what that means.

This is a good old fashioned butt whipping.

I just was Warmack drive someone 7 yards back. Just awesome!

Ross pocketed the Hard Knocks money and Brandon Marshalls salary....

3. Eifert ND TE does not look too good in this game. I would not touch him with a 1st round pick.

Orlando Dolphan | January 07, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Eiffert was actually being covered by Milliner earlier before they kept him in max-protect, pay attention!

I thought the sideline pass early could have gone either way and on the fumble that was reversed he took the LB on a piggy back ride for close to 5 yards.

He's now in max protect while the Irish look to try and make something happen deep with the plan here shifting into desperation mode basically eliminating him from the game plan, I think he maybe the only Notre Dame player who can hold his own out there not that it would make much of a difference in this one anymore.

Orlando,

Saban has a watermelon swet shop farm located where prying eyes cannot see. He brings them in at age 3-4, works them 18 hrs a day, then when 18yrs of age. Signs them up for the Bama football team.

It's an abysmal game.....a blowout........yet SunLifLess is fuller & noisier than any Fin game in the past decade.

Watch it & weep Ross & Jeffy.

Orlando,

When you have the top college program and top college coach, you don't need to find the best players, all the best players come and find you. It doesn't work that way in the NFL which is why SaBum will never be a good NFL coach.

Bama's making ND look like such pusses Im getting a woody. This game should be rated xxx!

Ross instead of saying "Your only measured in wins or losses " shouldve instead relayed the message "Your GM is only measured by the football IQ of the teams ownership" ...That would've made much more sense..just sayin!!!

They should block all exits and keep everyone in the stadium until the fins first 2013 regular season home game.

I wonder if Russell Wilson would have beaten out Tannehill assuming he was picked by the Fins as a backup plan (like Cousins at the Redskins).

Would Wilson have been given the same chance to compete?

Fins should take another QB in the draft. Moore will be gone soon.

Eiffert is so much better than Eggnew.

Eiffert's ability &effort has been the story of this game thus far.

He literally jumps off the TV screen with his skills.

fins4life,

I just base my assessment of Eifert on the few passes that he caught tonight. He looks outclassed in speed just like the rest of the Irish team. You may be right about him being held back for pass protection and maybe he would be better if a different QB was throwing the ball? Who knows? I also have never been crazy about the ND TEs. I would rather take Ertz and maybe even Fauria.

Steven Ross could always fill the stadium by placing blowup dolls in empty seats. When a nice breeze comes thru, they'll look like real people.

I prefer Yeldon he seems a lil more explosive.

Clue | January 07, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Since when did they begin letting Freshman into the NFL draft, Mr. Clue? Lacey is also an underclassmen but probably a safe bet to declare after this one with stock on the move up.

I think Eiffert would be even better with a real qb. Golson will probably never play on nfl Sundays.

I HAVE HEAD PAIN FROM READING THESE FOOTBALL POSTS ........

LET'S CHANGE THE SUBJECT TO MOVIES OR FOOD .

FIN4LIFE,
YOU FIRST .......

Eiffert Now! Eoffert Forevah!

He MUST be Jeffy's no.1 pick if we hope to compete in AFC next year.

I think he's trending no.1 on Twitter now with his spectacular play 2nite.

WOW,

I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM THE CUBAN MENACE,,,HE'S OUT OF JAIL ..

In saying this with the exception of miami beating seattle earlier this year...

Seattle has a much better defense OVERALL
They have more playmakers on offense
And having a beast at RB always helps a rookies cause at finding success early and often

Not sure if Wislon would be singing anything other than a 500 record if he was playing in a dolphin uniform this year with the same quality of talent this team offers..just sayin!!

Ross is a football idiot plain and simple. His football IQ is the equivalent of reading the scoreboard at the end of the game. Parcells had a foot out the door the minute Wayne H sold to this guy.

He is typical of most corporate douchebags. He is going to hire people to run the team. Wether its Ireland, or he brings in his pal Carl Peterson. He doesn't know his backside from a hole in the ground when it comes to football. He only knows what the others around him tell him.

As far as free agency, Ireland is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. A few years ago, he went out and traded for Brandon Marshall. About the only person on this board that was opposed was yours truly. Many of you were convinced we had found our big play receiver. He brought in a player that everyone wanted. How did that work out?

Ireland also went out and signed Karlos Dansby to a big free agent contract. Again he did what a consensus of many thought was the right thing. Dansby has been a major disappointment in a Dolphins uniform.

If the Dolphins are to do anything this offseason, I think they should build through the draft. They need young, hungry playmakers. None of the free agents available at WR are going to be worth it. This becomes a scary thought as this GM really has not drafted well. Who the hell is he going to pick?

PS. I can't believe they are going to change the logo. As a lifelong fan, I am disgusted by that.

Fins better draft another QB. Tannehill stinks!

They should block all exits and keep everyone in the stadium until the fins first 2013 regular season home game.

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | January 07, 2013 at 10:39 PM

ROTFLMFAO!

Jeez I already correcting myself about Yeldon yet ppl keep bringing it up

FIN4LIFE.... THAT WAS A FUNNY POST BY YG....

IRELAND CANT BUILD THRU THE DRAFT. CMON MAN!

Men vs. Children is the title of tonight's story. Lombardi, Rockne, Halas and Shula together could not make this a competitive game.

As for the Dolphins, I have absolutely zero confidence in Ireland's ability to assess talent and make good decisions in acquiring it. I pray to God that Philbin exerts proper input into the player acquisition process. That is our only hope. Ireland left to his own devices will provide a training camp full of Nanee Boo Boos.

We are about to witness the greatest comeback in College FB history!

Will you Irish-haters stick around to say "I'm Sorry"?

wouldnt be surprised if the new LOGO turned out to be a bad imitation of a KILLER WHALE....

Dee Milliner has done a pretty good job covering Tyler Eifert tonight. I would love a corner that could cover TE's for when we play New England. I would seriously consider drafting him at 12. That could give us the option to cut Patterson or Marshall to save cap space and possibly resign Smith.

OUR 1ST RD PICK SHOULD BE A BALL BOY!

OOPS, I FORGOT. A BALL BOY WILL BE MAKING OUR 1ST RD PICK.

SORRY, GOT A LITTLE CONFUSED.

I NEVER LIKED ANY THING ,IRISH .NOT EVEN THEIR WOMEN,,

Didja see the Tide players hanging their heads on way to sideline?

They're whipped, physically, mentally, emotionally.

They see their Crown slipping away.

Agree or Disagree?

If Irescum had one ounce of class he'd resign.

Irish women are whiter than dead people with even colder snatches. They only cook boiled meat, boiled potatoes, boiled eggs, and boiled carrots.

Rhino | January 07, 2013 at 10:46 PM

I HATED the Dansby signing! I thought he was a pretty good player but guaranteeing that contract at those yearly averages was amateur hour stuff! I can think of other MLB's in the draft and FA since who would have made more sense given they were well actually MLB's. I remember that being the Off-Season we lost out on Ryan Clark and hating the Dansby contract to move him out of position.

DONT GET IT TWISTED. MILNER CAN NOT COVER EIFFERT. IF BRADY WERE THROWING THE BALL HE WOULD PUT IT HIGH AND LET EIFFERT OUT-PHYSICAL MILNER FOR THE BALL.

EIFFERT WINS 9 OUT OF 10 OF THOSE BATTLES.

EIFFERT LOOKS COVERED BECAUSE GOLSON ISNT TOM BRADY. GET REAL PEOPLE.

resign smith??..isnt he looking to break bank as an *Cough* elite CB type of salery?? with 20 million in guaranteed money??...*lmao*..u cant be serious!!!

Never liked Irish Spring soap.

Is Wilson:

1)better than Tannehill or
2)just playing on a better team or
3)both 1 and 2

oh s h i t, when did ND score?

FIN4LIFE.........

DANSBY GURANTED MONEY OUT OF HIS 48 MILLION IS...27 MILLION....

Wilson is much much better then Tannehill. Not even close.

No, Jeff @10:53:

If The Water Boy had one ounce of class he'd commit ritualistic suicide Japanese-style, just after taping a dvd for public release, apologizing for his errors and asking the public to spare his family any further shame beyond the burden of his own inept history.

or resign.

ALOCO,

IM HAVING HOG HEAD CHEESE AND CRACKERS, WHILE WATERING IT DOWN WITH PEPPERMINT WHITE LIGHTNING.

WHAT ARE YOU HAVING FOR SNACK UP THERE RIGHT NOW YANKEE BOY?

I always thought the Fins logo was a dolphin jumping thru a hoop.

YG,,,

I AM HAVIN A BAD DASHI SAUCE .....

The Rock is on WWE live right now. USA network. Cage match?

I always thought the Fins logo was a dolphin jumping thru a hoop.

Posted by: NPA | January 07, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Partially correct. Its a flaming hoop called the SUN.

Man, should you get outside more often.

Orlando D,

I disagree on Eiffert I think he's going to be a good NFL T.E. I believe he can be a Jason Witten type (No great 40 time either) with more size on him and you can hold me to that.

God yall are a bunch of cry babies. If you don't like our direction tgen leave.

Should we have taken Ryan over Long?

ALOCO,

I MADE FRESH BAKED, NOT FRIED, POTATO CHIPS. IM DIPPING THEM IN CATTLEMAN'S STEAK SAUCE.

NO KETCHUP ALLOWED IN MY HOUSE!

WHAT? HASNT THIS GAME BEEN ON FOR LIKE 5 HRS NOW?

Ross should just sell the team to someone with a clue. He's a farce.

HOW could the Fins talent evaluators have missed on Russell Wilson?

Is Ireland still sticking to Parcells stereotypical player size, speed, etc.?

Is this why Wilson was overlooked (too small to be QB BS)?

Let this be a LESSON for the next draft.

Should we have taken Ryan over Long?
Posted by: Sam | January 07, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Only if we could've taken Roddy White and Julio Jones in a Packaged Deal to follow...Just Sayin

42-7 THIS IS WHEN COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEEDS A "MERCY RULE".

WELL, ON 2ND THOUGHTS, IF THEY ENDED THE GAME RIGHT NOW. A BUNCH OF SPONSORS WOULD BE DUE "HUGE REFUNDS".

NEVER MIND. LOL...

Cut Incognito and resgin Long. Draft Guard Warmack with the 1st pick and Guard Barret Jones with the first pick in the second round. Draft Lacey with the other pick in the second round. Then draft draft Fauria (TE) and Swope (WR) in the 3rd round. Take a top flight WR and Dustin Kellar in Free Agency. Bring back all our Free agents on defense.

By taking the two guards with the first two picks, the fins will be able to play smash mouth football. Can you imagine a line of Martin LT, Warmack LG, Pouncey C, Jones RG, and Long RT. Wow, Lacey would be in the top 5 in rushing and Tannehill would have a ton of time to find receivers and TEs.

I want to go see the new movie Gangland (great cast with Sean Penn playing Mickey Cohen) while eating Jr. Mints which for some reason aren't sold anymore?

Before the movie I'd like to go for dinner at the original Benihanas.

THEY JUST SHOWED THE BAMA OLINE ON THE BENCH. IT LOOKED LIKE A JOHN DEERE TRACTOR ADVERTISEMENT.
