The cost and savings of cutting some players

On Dec. 29 I shared with you a rundown of the Dolphins 2013 cap situation.. That post explained how the Dolphins have tons of cap room this year by showing you the cap number for every Dolphins player under contract plus some dead money and other machinations.

When all was said and done, we came to the conclusion the Dolphins could have as much as $46 million in cap space in 2013 if they carry over $5 million that went unused this year, which most teams do anyway. The updated number now is $46,066,759, again assuming the Dolphins carry over their space from this season. The number will vary but you can give or take $2 million to be safe.

It was a highly popular post but it also opened the flood gates to more questions on other cap issues, and the most frequently asked of those was, "What players are likely to get cut to save cap room?"

My answer is I do not know. Look, when I know, I tell you. When I know, I write it hard.

When I don't know, I tell you that also. I have no hard information which player, if any, the Dolphins might cut for cap purposes this year. But I can show you the candidates and the ramifications.

That means I can tell you the potential cap savings and dead money whacking certain players would create.

I'm not picking these names out of a hat. I'm telling you the guys that are even remote candidates for this exercise. Doesn't mean they will get cut. But obviously, the team studies this situation. Now, you can also:

Player                   Cap cost    Cap savings     Dead money

Karlos Dansby       $8.575M      $3.925M         $4.65M

Paul Soliai             $7.875M     $6.3M             $1.575M

Richard Marshall    $5.766M     $5.35M           $2.33M

Kevin Burnett       $5.7M         $3.2M              $2.5M

Richie Incognito    $5.38M       $4.3M              $1.08M

Dimitri Patterson  $4.6M          $4.6M             $0

Davone Bess          $3.43M        $2.68M           $750K

Dan Carpenter       $3.012M      $2.7M             $312,500

Michael Egnew      $652,239      $210,522        $441,717

Nolan Carroll        $622,939      $575,000         $47,939

Remember that dead money is a cost that remains on the team's books after a player to which the team was invested is cut or traded. The Dolphins, for exampled, don't have Vontae Davis on the roster anymore. But he's still costing them $1.1 million in dead money on their salary cap.

If cutting or trading a player leaves a lot of dead money on the books, the move is less likely.

Obviously the list above does not include every player under contact. But let's face it, every player should not be here because some simply do not make any sense whatever to consider for cutting or salary cuts.

Cameron Wake is not here, for example.

Even some of the players on the list above are a stretch to even look at. Let's face it, the Dolphins will not cut Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett and neither is going to take a paycut because they could find work elsewhere pretty quickly.

But some players on here should be wary of what's going to happen this offseason and even into training camp.

Patterson, for example, will never see $4.6 million in cap cost from the Dolphins next year. He played well in exactly one game before getting injured. That doesn't earn you that kind of money the following year. And the fact cutting his pay or simply whacking him would cost the team zero in dead money means this is glowing in neon to happen.

Richard Marshall should be worried, too. He's coming off back surgery. The club will probably take him to training camp as long as he heals as scheduled and shows that he can return to being a contributor in 2013. But if he doesn't show bigtime in training camp and the Dolphins have other options, Marshall should be looking around corners. In fact, he should be monitoring what Miami does in the draft in free agency at the cornerback spot because he's not guaranteed anything at this point. Yes, that would be a lot of dead money spent on him. But the savings might be worth it to the team.

Same with Dan Carpenter. He's in the final year of his contract. He is coming off a season in which he missed pressure kicks that might have won two games. And then he couldn't finish out the season.

The Dolphins have not brought a kicker to camp to compete with Carpenter in years. I believe they will do that next training camp. Just in case.

And if Carpenter loses the battle, the club saves $2.7 million.

Mark I agree no one should give Bush more money, but the NFL is weird, he does dance to much.

Devry Henderson drops as many as he catches. I cover LA for my job, Most of the season ticket holders HATE the guy... And he was a LSU product. So I would be leary of him.

I like Delmas and Phillips.

..I think that the tean should think about letting Starks go, in favor of moving Odrick to DT, and then using Vernon, Shelby @ Odricks spot. Odrick is much better suited to play "inside". Plus it does give us some threat of an up the middle pass rusher. It also clears some money that we would have to pay for Starks.

We talk about developing our own. Well Odrick is a first round freekin pick. He is average as a defensive end, could be a force if he is asked to make this move.

As far as TE'O goes. I'm beating a dead horse. I was a blogger who said I believed TE'O was the best player at his position in the draft. He may be. But this "hoax" stinks, and has his prints all over it. I do not believe him for a second, and think he is a guilty as a kid in a cookie jar. 3 years of internet, phone dating? I know Mormons are nutorious "dry humpers" But this is a new level. I have scratched him off any wish list, and apoligize to those whos time I wasted by blowing the horn for this kid.

Mark, there is a wiki saying 5th. It is a wiki though. Either way 4th/5th is still crazy considering how good he is. Got passed a lot. Drafting not a science, more of a lottery.

OK YG, just remember you asked for it you fat disgusting sweaty old salty troll ... besides McKinnie nobody is really old that I mentioned and even then -he is still a dominant player when in shape.

Henderson is 30 - same as Jennings

Everyone else is south of 30.

Now go fukk yourself with a hacksaw you plug.

GB should offer Bush 6-8 mill. He is exactly what they need.

Poizen,

I wouldnt touch Louis Delmas or Kenny Phillips. At this point in thier careers I much rather have Chris Clemons. At least with Clemons there's still room for slight improvement.

These guys are old and have lost a step or two. In his 2nd season under Coyle, this could be Clemons best year ever. Clemons is only going into his 5th season and should be a cheap resign.

It could be a mistake to write Clemons off just yet. His improvement has been slow, but, it has been improvement just the same. This was easily Clemons best season as a Dolphin in terms of consistency.

Poizen, i will take your word on henderson - i just know that i hear his name a lot and surprised nobody brought it up here as a possible b level WR addition.

CS, agreed. 4th, 5th to make an impact as fast as he has is absurd at that position.

I have scratched him off any wish list, and apoligize to those whos time I wasted by blowing this kid.

I'm glad you apologized but I don't think I'll forgive you, sorry.

This tean has turned to shyt since Parcells left....

Marcie in Toronto,

In America we dont use the term "plug". Sounds like something you picked up during your g a y bar escapades.

Really dude plug? Sounds like youre going down in flames flamer. LOL...

Billcale what did Settle due before they found a gem in Russell Wilson? A good QB makes the whole organization look better. The only coach that can really make a difference is the defensive coordinator. On the offensive side of the ball everything falls on the play of the QB. On another note, the dolphins should do everything in their power to either get Singletary or Lovie Smith (if he can't get a HC job)as their defensive coordinator!

All thes canadiens are idiots.

haha, Delmas is old at 26. Phillips is 26. Will Moore is 27. clemons is 27

STFU you fat abuse of social programs!

"WHDP, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I like how he plays corner for the most part and have no problem paying the man. he's not perfect but there's a lot worse out there. And does his job.

No he may or may not start on Seattle but he would start on 30 other teams - guaranteed."

Mark,

That's not guaranteed. He wouldn't start on the Niners, he wouldn't start on the Rams (Jenkins is a rookie & is already better), he wouldn't start on Atlanta even with Brent Grimes out for the season, he wouldn't start on the Bengals, he wouldn't start on Ravens even with Ladarius Webb out for the season, & he wouldn't start on the Jets when Revis is healthy.

After 4 seasons--Smith is still too inconsistent to be counted on. You're talking about a mediocre player who is either a starter in a bad secondary like ours or a 3rd CB in a decent secondary.

ur retarded beyond belief. When did you take that one shot to the head that rendered u useless forever?

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Brady has finally come clean. Brady confessed to being a homosexual during an interview with Oprah Winfrey taped Monday, just a couple of hours after a wrenching apology to G. Roun Control, R.C. Threa, and Paul D. Phile and other Pats fans in Section 140. The day ended with 2.5 hours of questions from Winfrey at a downtown Boston hotel, where a shirtless Rob Gronkowski dodged questions and was seen leaving Brady's room moments before the interview. Winfrey said the world's most famous homosexual athlete was "forthcoming" as she asked him in detail about "gerbil felching" and "Locker Room Naked Twister" allegations that followed him throughout his NFL career. Speaking on "CBS This Morning," Winfrey said Tuesday she had not planned to address Brady's confession before the interview aired on her OWN network but, "by the time I left Boston and landed in Chicago, you all had already confirmed it." "So I'm sitting here now because it's already been confirmed," she added. The session was to be broadcast on Thursday but Winfrey said it will now run in two parts over two nights because there is so much material. Winfrey would not characterize whether Brady seemed contrite but said he seemed ready for the interview. "I would say that he met the moment," she said. "I don't think 'emotional' begins to describe the intensity or the difficulty he experienced in talking about some of these things." The confession was a stunning reversal for a proud athlete and celebrity who sought lavish praise in the from racist, homophobic Patriots fans and used Pat Patriot Butt Plugs to punish his life partners. NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell said Brady must confess under oath to seek a reduction in his lifetime ban from NFL locker rooms.

..Tyrann Mathieu????? I will make a bet here(friendly wager) That there is no way the Dolphins draft this kid. Nor should we. I agree, in college this kid made plays all over the place(so did Tim Tebow..sorry had to go there). Everyone remembers the returns, the fumble recoveries. Watch the games. The guy can't cover. And remember he had Morris Claiblorne(better then anyone we have) so save his bacon. I also believe the safties from the 2011 LSU team are NFL safties. so the Honeyt Badger could roam around in the secondary, and do his thing because he had superior talent behind him to account for his mistakes. Yet because of this freedom he could play loose, and make plays. He was a freekin liabity in coverage, plain and simple.

Don't believe me..Ask Nick Saban, watchg the NC game. Sababn was smart enough to know the Badger was a mismatch in his favor. He was the target of A.J. McCarron who lit him up..A.J. McCarron at that point in 2011 was a liability in Alabamas offense. And he LIT the Honey Badger up.

You guys can take him. Claim he is a playmaker. How do we use him? He isn't going to have the same frredom in the NFL as he did in college. I hope he has a great CFL career.

Are all canadiens idiots?

DD,

Lance Armstrong really benefitted from the T'eo story. Armstrong's admission now seems like an "afterthought" compared to the T'eo story.

Had this T'eo story not broken, the Armstrong story would be dominating the tubes right now. The Armstrong only plays bridesmaid to the t'eo story at present.

WHDP, you made your stance, Ihave my belief. I'm not changing it.

In the end my opinion will not impact the Dolphins' choice anyway. Doubt anything on this blog persuades anyone to do anything. Heck I haven't even been able to get YG to change his underwear during these last three weeks despite constant badgering.

Next year, Sean Smith will get paid. he will drive nicer cars than me, live in a bigger house, bang fine women, and eat in nicer restaurants. So it is what it is man ...

YG, how many aliases are you going to get to post here. I knwo it's you because you can't spell. it's Canadians you manatee!

"YG, if he's there in the 4th, it's a no-brainer. He smokes weed. Memo to the World, EVEN LANCE ARMSTRONG TAKES DRUGS!!!

This isn't an acorn. This is elite talent with possible off-the-field issues.

Remember, big risk = BIG reward!"

DC,

Not sure what Lance Armstrong has to do with anything BUT lots of kids in college smoke marijuana & if he's still available in the 2nd you have to seriously kick the tires on a player as talented as him. Janoris Jenkins had off the field issues as well but he still went in the first round so the Honey Badger in the 2nd might be worth the risk.

..Yg..I'm watching the Dan Patrick show, and the poll question is would you rather get caught using PED's or be caught lying about a girlfriend. It is overwhelming how many would rather get caught taking the PED's.

This is such an embarassment for TE'O..The DP show poll is hardly scientific. but it shows people would rather take drugs to cheat, then get caught in a lie about a fictitional girlfriend. Part of TE'O that made him such a intriguing prospect was his leadership. Well that is out the window. He is a fraud. How is he going to be a leader of men?

DD,

You maybe right. Maybe this fo doesnt take a risk on a player with off the field issues. However, at somepoint even the most conservative of fo's and coaching staffs do take a chance on a kid with issues when they see great value is there.

Seems the deal with these conservative outfits is more risk reward, and dont have multiples of these types on your team. At present we dont have this type on the team. So having 1, who's upside could be thru the ceiling, is a risk worth the reward.

Even Bellichik at times will take risks on these types when he see potential even greater reward. So as improbable as it may seem. I dont think that is "IMPOSSIBLE" that this fo and coaching staff wouldnt take this risk on Matthieu in a "later rd scenario".

MESSAGE TO ROSS

FORGET THE LOGO FORGET THE CELEBRITIES FORGET THE STADIUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TRY CONCENTRATING ON BUILDING A WINNER FOR A CHANGE!!

DD,

Include amongst those in that poll that would rather get caught taking PED's. Having a fake phony girlfriend feels like getting caught "masterbating in public". LOL...

"WHDP, you made your stance, Ihave my belief. I'm not changing it.

LOL@Mark. Ha! No doubt. All excellent points btw.

Include me

We Blow Draft Picks,

Now you? I get it now, youre the one Marcie In Toronto's getting married to. Seems destined to be a s h i t t y marriage! LOL...

Correction:

We Blow Marcie In Toronto,

A more fitting name for you flamer! LOL...

Daryl,

Sadly enough I can totally see Ireland drafting Teo.

We Blow Marcie In Toronto,

Werent you Te'os ineternet girlfriend? Come on tell us, I wont tell Marcie In Toronto. LOL...

Hmmm......

"You Blow Marcie In Toronto " sounds much bettger. LOL...

I can see Ireland drafting a kicker in the 1st rd.

Marcie In Toronto,

When will you be pulling out the buttplug for a good wash? I guess it should be super glued in there by now. LOL...

Why are Canadians on this blog anyway?

They will probably cut the ones that did not perform according to their salaries last year.

Anyone going to Marcie In Toronto and We Have Draft Picks in Marcie's A s s' wedding?

Its guaranteed to be a real stinking flamer! I hear Rue Paul will be doing the numptuals. LOL...

Yg, a day late and dollar short as usual. check out my posts from yesterday morning when I outed you as T'eo's lover.

By the way, your retorts suck and show no imagination whatsoever. The sump pump on your trailer needs attention!

YG, you're already invited by extension when I invited ALoco

Marcie In Toronto,

I would attend you and We Have Draft Picks Up Marcie In Toronto's A s s. Even if you gave away free "pooper scoopers" and oxygen masks. LOL...

It would be helpful if "somebody" published a list of the average salary paid to Players by positions in the NFL. That would clarify many things.

wouldnt

oscar, I was looking for the same thing. the best I can find is a top ten by position here ...

http://www.spotrac.com/top-salaries/nfl/cap-hit/quarterback/

You can pay and get the comprehensive list I guess ...

Also has a list of prospective free agents. useful site.

ya, nice try YG, you blithering moron.

Rue Paul??? Dude, how OLD ARE YOU????

I think my grandfather made RuPaul jokes....

Marcie In Toronto,

I much rather be a bilthering moron, than have a "blistering a s s hole" you unmitigated flamer. LOL...

WhoTH is Rue Paul?

Marcie In Toronto,

Dont you have more important things to do right now like polishing your nails or shaving your s e x change? LOl...

Next time try an Arsenio Hall or Charlie Chaplin joke. mr. Roper had some funny ghey jokes on Three's Company too.

No why don't you all tell us again why we should re-sign Chris Clemons at 27 again because he's younger and has more upside than the younger Louis delmas or the guys that are the same age like Kenny Phillips and Will Moore. Not to mention that Clemons was un underperforming 5th round project while the other guys played on playoff teams and wwere all judged to be 1st and 2nd round talents ...

You fukkin walrus

Oscar,

ALoco say you dont like Armando. Is this true?

We find nothing regarding whether some present Miami Players are being overpaid or not if we don't find a list of the AVERAGE salary paid by position in the NFL, Toronto. Ireland should have that list, so not to worry.

Marcia In Toronto,

Your last post was just proof Canadians dont know American football. There's no such thing as a "underperforming 5th rd'er". Its called being extremely lucky if you find a 5th rd'er thats great.

Underperforming 5th rd'er are called "cut lists". No one keeps a underperforming 5th rd'er idiot. LOL...

Oscar,

You best believe Jeff Ireland isnt going to "overpay anyone" unless he's painted into a corner that he cant get out of. Believe that! LOL...

Seems to me we need to get YG and Mark in a boxing match, wonder who would win

They will probably cut the ones that did not perform according to their salaries last year.

Posted by: oscar canosa | January 18, 2013 at 12:35 PM

. And replace them with a D Thomas or an Egnew? lol

Sometimes, I get the feeling that ALL individuals from the Media try to push up or pull down certain Players according to their interests.I like People fine. I don't like disHonesty.

Maybe it would be easier for you to understand if I put the comma there

"underperforming, 5th rounder"

i.e. he blows goats

You have something in common.

if you still don't understand I'm saying he was a 5th round pick which indicates marginal talents to start with, and coupled with being an underperformer indicates he should eb replaced.

No there's your lesson for today. Sorry I forgot the comma and almost overloaded your ability to comprehend.

But please explain to me how Clemons is still younger and has more upside big fat turd...

Oscar, ahha, no doubt. They have people who's sole job is to tirelessly evaluate this information ... or they shoudl anyway.

So if anyone is paying attention, YG has chimed in with no fewer than 3 different personas in the last hour.

YG, MJ, and Our Draft Picks are Useless. Still waiting for ALoco ...

Hell, they might cut D. Thomas and Egnew for all I know.
