Let's put aside the fanciful talk of adding this guy and re-signing that guy for a moment and consider what all this stuff is going to cost, shall we?
Let me scare you right off the bat:
If the Dolphins want to add an elite wide receiver this offseason in free agency -- assuming one is even available -- it is going to cost around $9-$11 million per season. That's according to former NFL agent and salary cap expert Joel Corry, who now writes about NFL contracts and the salary cap for the National Football Post.
"The high end UFA WRs will be looking at Vincent Jackson's 5-year, $55,555,555 deal ($26M GTD) as a benchmark," Corry tweeted to me on Thursday.
That is $11 million a year, folks.
Obviously, there are two things at play that must be stipulated.
That price is for a Vincent Jackson-type wide receiver. The player asking for that money must offer that enormous amount of talent. Jackson caught 72 passes for 1,384 yards (a whopping 19.2 yards per catch) and eight TDs in 2012. I'm not certain anyone on the market rises to that level of ability.
Jackson is a deep threat all day long and he also happens to be 6-5 and 230 pounds. (Yeah, amazing).
And the $11 million is the starting asking price. It is not necessarily the final price.
While any elite wide receiver on the market may want $11, I'm sure most will be talked off that skyscrapper ledge to a much lower floor. I'd say, and this is a conservative estimate, the elite wide receiver on the market this year will get around $10 million per season and it'll fall sharply from there. Remember, Wes Welker made $9.55 million under a franchise tag in 2012 and would cost $11.4 million if tagged in 2013 -- which is unlikely.
By the way, the cost of doing business in the wide receiver market won't be cheap for the Dolphins even if they stick with what they got. Pending free agent Brian Hartline, a No. 2 receiver, will be looking for $5-$6 million per year on the open market if he gets there.
Greg Jennings? He'll be hovering in the $8-$9 million annual range.
And the price at other positions won't be much cheaper.
Elite cornerbacks are expecting $10 million per season. Agents will be looking at Brandon Carr's five-year $50 million deal with Dallas and Jason McCourty's 5-year, $43 million deal to stay in Tennesee and see that as the numbers to shoot for.
So Carr is averaging $10 million a year while McCourty is averaging $8.6 million per year.
That's the zip code cornerback Sean Smith expects to inhabit at the start of free agency. And yes, he's likely going to free agency. I don't think the Dolphins will pay that kind of money for Smith. They see him as a good player who still has unmet potential. They do not see him as a game-changer or playmaker.
There are also questions about how Smith will react professionally once he gets paid. Will he cruise? Will he feel entitled? Will the work ethic suffer?
(Kindly post comments on whether you believe Sean Smith is worth $8.6 million per season in the appropriate section below).
That's the cost of doing business, folks.
The Dolphins will be lucky to re-sign Randy Starks for the $6 million a year Paul Soliai got in March of 2012. The Herald's Barry Jackson tells me the sides have opened talks but are not close.
I'll say.
I would imagine Starks will be the highest-paid DT on the team, seeing as he's the only one that's been to a couple of Pro Bowls. But I don't see how the Dolphins can pay him the $8 million per year that Vince Wilfork makes or certainly not the $12 million per year that Haloti Ngata makes.
So that might land him in the $7 million a year slot.
That might well be the cost of doing business.

...Did anyone have anything to say about the players at todays Senior Bowl?
There were a few standout players today. A few players that IMO looked like good prospects for our needs. The defensive players definitley outplayed the offensive side today. Luckily the draft is more then one all star game. Anyway.
By far the best player on the field today was Ansah Ezekial from BYU. For a guy who has 2 years of football experience. He dominated. I had never seen a snap before today. Very impressive. The other player on the South side that dominated was Montori Hughes from small school Tenn. Martin. I think he is better suited for the 3-4. He was the best interior lineman on either side today.
The North side had a few players that impressed as well. WR. Marquise Goodwin, (Texas) was very active. He showed he could beat corners on deep routes. Impressive because in the Senior Bowl. The rules dictate you cannot play press coverage. Jon Franklin RB UCLA. The thing I like about Franklin is he can obviously run it. He can catch it, and he is a very good blocker. His style fits perfect for our zone concept as he is a patient cut back runner. I think he is drafted before we would take a shot at a running back. But who knows. Ireland seem to say he would look at the best player available.
Another back on the North team that was impressive today was Harvard FB Kyle Juszczyk(spelling??) We need improvement at fullback. Javorskie Lane digressed as the season went along. This offense needs a fullback. You can't run the WCO without one. This guy blocked everything. And we know he is smart. A couple of corners stood out as well. Will Davis(utah State) and Jordan Poyer(Oregon State) Tough to really say because the rules of this game limit the coverages. Still, these two stood out.
Just some names to check out down the road should they get chances to work out for the team.

JPAO,
**NICE POST**
I wish I could be as succinct and to the point!
=================================================
to be clear....I like Starks / Solai as our DT's. The question that i struggle with...
Should the Fins pay big money to Starks?
-----------------------------------------
-I don't think we should pay Starks "Big Money". I think we should be careful in making him a decent and respectful offer. Along the same lines as a hypothetical deal for Long, pump up the numbers with some **REASONABLE** back loading. Then offer up a ton of creative incentives. This allows vets like Starks to write his own checks.
===========================================
I just wonder if allowing him to go and relying on the younger players proves to be fine. I think Odrick, Shelby and Randall will prove a solid rotation with Solai. So, letting Starks go and reinvesting those dollars in "playmakers" who score TD's or create turnovers might be better use of the $'s.
-------------------------------------------
-I think this is an excellent alternative. I would try to retain Starks with a fair market deal. But as good as Shelby and Randall have looked, combined with Odrick for depth, I wouldn't let Starks hold us up.
I think these youngsters will continue to improve and financially speaking, this alternative wouldn't be too bad at all.
==============================
This is what makes the GM job difficult. For all the crap given to Ireland it's a tough job in the end.

It's been for some years that the Players that you see at the Sr Bowl are the second rate ones(e.g., Koa Misi, Sparanos idea). Top Draft prospect only attend the Combine and in some cases not even that, private workouts.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 27, 2013 at 08:15 AM
There was a mock draft recently where DE Ezekiel Ansah, yesterday's Senior Bowl Outstanding Player, went to the Dolphins in the draft at pick #12. Another had WR Keenan Allen at that spot. I wonder where they each fall on Jeff Ireland's board?
I'd hate to pass on Allen. He seems to be exactly what Miami needs for the future. Good size, speed, hands and aggressiveness. But who would pass on such a gifted athlete as Ansah?
Miami has 5 picks, from pick 12 to pick 82 over the 1st 3 rounds. 71 players will be picked overall during this time and Miami can select from 12 of the best collegiate WRs in the draft who may go in those rounds:
-Keenan Allen 6-3, 210
-Cordarrelle Patterson 6-3, 205
-Justin Hunter 6-4, 200
-Terrance Williams 6-2, 205
-Tavon Austin 5-9, 175
-Robert Woods 6-1, 190
-Deandre Hopkins 6-1, 200
-Markus Wheaton 6-1, 182
-Stedman Bailey 5-10, 189
-Da'Rick Rogers 6-3, 206
-Quinton Patton 6-2, 195
-Ryan Swope 6-1, 206

im passed the point of argument on ireland or calling for his head cause its pointless. ross made huge mistake of becoming friends with ireland and now cant pull trigger on firing him. ireland is easily one of the worst gms in the nfl, guy is awful. but we know we are stuck with him so lets just hope we get lucky. if he fails with all this to work with this offseason he will finally be fired. but that will also mean we blew a huge opp to turn things around with ton of cash and picks wasted
Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 27, 2013 at 09:24 AM
If Matt Barkley is on the board at #12 we have to take him. He would've been the 2nd overall pick last year (ahead of RG3) and is a Andrew Luck clone.
Posted by: Jay | January 27, 2013 at 09:30 AM
I saw a post that suggested Solia to New Orleans because of their switch to 34 defense. Take those funds and Give Starks a reasonable 3 year 21 million deal. Odrick pairs up then add depth in draft. That would make a lot of sense , since draft is loaded at DT
Now to something very important. Sean Smith.
I truly believe This Position is critical and effects pass rush, they depend on each other. In this league you have to have cover corners. Team officials must have seen something in smith , going into a contract year, that they traded Vontae instead of him. Davis has another year on contract with colts before free agency. My point is they have in some way already committed to smith. Now to answer the question. IS HE WORTH 8 million? I truly believe so.
Young with so much room to go. He did well on Fitzgerald & Green this year one-on-one.
Pay Him. The real problem is safety opposite Jones.
Jake Long era has to end. No question. Some dummy will pay him 12-15. We can't
Teams are getting to Super Bowls with mediocre OL play.
Reggie will have to take 2.5-3 million if I were GM. On 2 year deal.
Return duties and third down exclusively!!!!!! Catch passes out of the slot as well.
Hartline at 4-5 million is a fair deal. It's not all his fault he caught only 1 TD
Fasano- stays as # 2 TE. Simple. I've never seen anything from him that merits his salary.
He's been grew he's like the bosses nephew for years. Can't take it anymore.
Clemons- no need to answer- GONE. Stays for depth only.
This Off season is all about the War Room and scouts earning their paychecks!!!
FA too look at. Jared Cook, Jennings , I like Wallace but not at price.
JI has to rework some contracts. Dansby, incognito, Burnett , Patterson . Marshall
Pay cut or hit the market !!

The damage done by Sparano to this Team is beyond belief. We are very lucky to have mantained some pieces and be where we are now.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 27, 2013 at 09:53 AM
It is common knowledge that Sparano ruined Jake Long's career as well as ending the careers of some very good OL like, Jake Grove, Justin Smiley. Intentional? Hmm...
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 27, 2013 at 10:01 AM
Personally I see no value with the top FA receivers on the market, who are both coming off average, injury plagued seasons. Unfortunate for the Fins, but just puts exclamation point on what a fool Ireland looks like for not drafting a couple of decent WR's in last year's draft, which was a deep one for wideouts. Of course, this year, when they are in dire need of a playmaker, the market is dry and the draft is weak.
Just another day in the life of a Fins fan.
Posted by: tvegas | January 27, 2013 at 10:06 AM

You got it backwards. The Colts came calling for Vontae offering a high pick. We didn't choose to keep Smith, we chose the deal offered. No doubt Vontae is a better corner. They should have dealt with his minor immaturity problems and kept him.

Posted by: Nj | January 27, 2013 at 10:46 AM
How does Jennings change our culture? He's soft and can't stay on the field. Not the leader that I want on the field. And Wallace is a one hit wonder. Puts together one fantastic season and that makes him an elite talent? This just isn't a good year to need a FA receiver.
