« Revis to the Dolphins!!!: Not | Main | Fine TEs important 20 years ago and today »

The cost of doing business ain't cheap

Let's put aside the fanciful talk of adding this guy and re-signing that guy for a moment and consider what all this stuff is going to cost, shall we?

Let me scare you right off the bat:

If the Dolphins want to add an elite wide receiver this offseason in free agency -- assuming one is even available -- it is going to cost around $9-$11 million per season. That's according to former NFL agent and salary cap expert Joel Corry,  who now writes about NFL contracts and the salary cap for the National Football Post.

"The high end UFA WRs will be looking at Vincent Jackson's 5-year, $55,555,555 deal ($26M GTD) as a benchmark," Corry tweeted to me on Thursday.

That is $11 million a year, folks.

Obviously, there are two things at play that must be stipulated.

That price is for a Vincent Jackson-type wide receiver. The player asking for that money must offer that enormous amount of talent. Jackson caught 72 passes for 1,384 yards (a whopping 19.2 yards per catch) and eight TDs in 2012. I'm not certain anyone on the market rises to that level of ability.

Jackson is a deep threat all day long and he also happens to be 6-5 and 230 pounds. (Yeah, amazing).

And the $11 million is the starting asking price. It is not necessarily the final price.

While any elite wide receiver on the market may want $11, I'm sure most will be talked off that skyscrapper ledge to a much lower floor. I'd say, and this is a conservative estimate, the elite wide receiver on the market this year will get around $10 million per season and it'll fall sharply from there. Remember, Wes Welker made $9.55 million under a franchise tag in 2012 and would cost $11.4 million if tagged in 2013 -- which is unlikely.

By the way, the cost of doing business in the wide receiver market won't be cheap for the Dolphins even if they stick with what they got. Pending free agent Brian Hartline, a No. 2 receiver, will be looking for $5-$6 million per year on the open market if he gets there.

Greg Jennings? He'll be hovering in the $8-$9 million annual range.

And the price at other positions won't be much cheaper.

Elite cornerbacks are expecting $10 million per season. Agents will be looking at Brandon Carr's five-year $50 million deal with Dallas and Jason McCourty's 5-year, $43 million deal to stay in Tennesee and see that as the numbers to shoot for.

So Carr is averaging $10 million a year while McCourty is averaging $8.6 million per year.

That's the zip code cornerback Sean Smith expects to inhabit at the start of free agency. And yes, he's likely going to free agency. I don't think the Dolphins will pay that kind of money for Smith. They see him as a good player who still has unmet potential. They do not see him as a game-changer or playmaker.

There are also questions about how Smith will react professionally once he gets paid. Will he cruise? Will he feel entitled? Will the work ethic suffer?

(Kindly post comments on whether you believe Sean Smith is worth $8.6 million per season in the appropriate section below).

That's the cost of doing business, folks.

The Dolphins will be lucky to re-sign Randy Starks for the $6 million a year Paul Soliai got in March of 2012. The Herald's Barry Jackson tells me the sides have opened talks but are not close.

I'll say.

I would imagine Starks will be the highest-paid DT on the team, seeing as he's the only one that's been to a couple of Pro Bowls. But I don't see how the Dolphins can pay him the $8 million per year that Vince Wilfork makes or certainly not the $12 million per year that Haloti Ngata makes.

So that might land him in the $7 million a year slot.

That might well be the cost of doing business.

..So when would I take the Honey Badger? wouldn't touch him. not this team. And it has nothing to do with his love for the weed. It is because personel where does he fit in? He doesn't. Are you going to put him at nickel? He is Jimmy Wilson with a highlight reel. Nothing more. They are the same player.

He is a one trick pony..He is a zone player, that is it. Well Mr. Dunphy the Phins play a lot of zone. True. But IMO that has to change, we have to find bigger corners that can play press. Also, we are talking about a guy that made his living of depenadance on other players being responsible. You guys see Ed Reed???? Ed Reed earned the right to do what he does because he plays smart. This is a different player. I don't touch him.

DD, what you're describing makes him sound like a good safety. If he is good at scanning the field AND he hits like Bernard Pollard of the Ravens then I think it would be a great tandem to have him and Jones as our safeties.

Sorry, that should read free agency ... I'm on no sleep here guys. I was up most of the chatting with this cool hawaiian chick on the interenet. She seems really cool, the kind of girl a guy can fall in love with ....

sorry again, safety. dang hawaiians

...LOL@ Mark. That is funny.

Mark,

What's going on dude? I though you were tying the knot in June? You getting cold feet? Couple of nights at the 'Downer and you'll come to your senses and be back on the singles path...LOL.

Kris,

Craig, I thought places like the 'Downer were made expressly for married men ... not like the women there will care ...

By the way Lundy's Lane in the Falls has to be the funniest place on Earth... I don't think anywhere else would you find these exact three buildings in a row ...

A strip joint, a late night "massage" parlour, and a drive thru wedding chapel.... what bizarre sequence of events allows you to attend all three of these places in the same night??? Some kind of story I bet ...

"The Miami Herald reports free agent LT Jake Long is believed to be seeking at least $10 million annually, and that the Dolphins are "pessimistic" about their chances of re-signing him.

$10 million is hardly prohibitive for a top-flight left tackle, but Long has been anything but that the past two seasons. However, he'll still only be 28 in 2013, and there should be no shortage of teams willing to gamble on a return to form if he reaches the open market. The Dolphins are reportedly unwilling to offer Long more than $6-$7 million per season. There's a long time between now and free agency, but Long is looking less and less likely to remain in Miami with each passing day."

Ignore the the stories & rumors that are swirling out there. In the end Ireland will f#ck up & do the wrong thing. He'll re-sign Jake for over $10 Million a year or franchise him & let Hartline walk.

Dashi,

WTF are you talking about??? You NEED institutional control.

Mark,

Sounds like Vegas.

Mark,

I pass by those about once a week. The 'downer is the only one of three I'm been in but the 'massage' place sounds intriguing. It's a STRANGE town to say the least!

Playmakers, I think that is the future for Niagara Falls .. to be the Vegas of the North. It only hasn't happened so far because the Province of Ontario is so Puritan in their beliefs but the region (southwestern Ontario) has been incredibly hard by the closure of resource related companies that the pressure to loosen things up may get too high. I love the falls personally. When I don't have the time to geet away but need to get away, I head onto the QEW Expressway for about an hour and just let shite hit the fan...

"When I don't have the time to geet away but need to get away.."

LOL. I can certainly relate to that feeling.

One thing that I think is a huge priority for is signing Reshad Jones to an extension. This guy is just turning 25 next month. He improved this year, is a playmaker, and still has tons of upside.

Don't lowball him. Offer him a nice 5 year contract at around 6 or 7 mil a year. Include like 10 million up front in the form of a signing bonus. Thats a lot of money to turn down and risk injury.

In fairness to Ireland he desrves credit for getting the Wake extension done before it caused a problem at a fair price. Hopefully he can do the same with Jones.

Dashi...

to even compare ZERO NFL experince Geno Smith to 3 time AFC Championship game (and soon to be 1 SB game) expericed Joe Flacco is really silly....

Later on you will be telling me that I can't compare Tanne to his PEER'S (Luck, 3, Wilson, Weedon) because Tanne only had 19 college starts....

Its Ok to form an opinion about a player...in this case it's Flacco...you don't think he's good....I got it...but now I think you need to re-look you're postion and opinion of said player....

don't you???

To continue to insult a player because he pi$$ed in you're cherrios isn't gonna change the FACT that he is a WINNER....and his record...and playoff record proves that...

I am the biggest ANTI-Ireland person on this blog...but if he shows in the next off-season or two (GOD I hope it's not two) ....then I will be forced to change my tune...and will do so happily knowing my FINS are in good hands...

NeMo, he's a UFA next winter so yeah, after this year's team gets settled, he should work on that. he isn't going anywhere though. He would be tagged at the least if he's as good next year or better. To tag him will probably cost around $8M - not the worst thing in the world.

Dolphins also need another pass rusher. Why not go after Freeney? He doesn't fit in Indys 3-4, so bring him in to play opposite Wake. Thats a scarry rush any Qb wouldn't want to face.

NeMo,

Other than Wake, Jones is the only other playmaker we have on the roster so I agree we need to get him locked up ASAP.

I hear what you're saying about Wake but you can also criticize Ireland for not locking up Hartline last year. Instead of getting away with paying him $3 Million a year now it's going to cost us $6 Million to keep him. I hope Ireland understands that IF he lets Hartline walk the hole at WR will be so enormous that there's a good chance that decision to not keep Hartline may cost him his job.

I know people keep harping on the cap space we have BUT there's still not enough of foundation to build off of yet. Until we establish an identity as a football team we're going nowhere. Do we want to be like the Packers offense w/o Aaron Rodgers b/c I don't think that's going to work here. I'd much rather be like the Niners with the different formations who pound the rock down your throat. W/o a running game & the weakness due to injuries on the O-line--GB is not even a playoff team w/o Rodgers.

And when I start to look at Sherman I didn't see a whole lot of creativity or innovation this season. Maybe that was by design or maybe he's just limited. Also you need to consider if he can take Tannehill to the next level. Sure he knows the kid but can he make Tannehill better???

"Dolphins also need another pass rusher. Why not go after Freeney? He doesn't fit in Indys 3-4, so bring him in to play opposite Wake. Thats a scarry rush any Qb wouldn't want to face."

In 14 games this season Freeney had 12 tackles & 5 sacks. The reason he's going to be cut is b/c he's going to be 33 & is costing the Colts too much money. Of all the Colt games I saw the best game he had was against us. I don't know how many time he beat Long but it was embarrassing & it was that game that solidified my belief that Long is DEFINITELY on the decline.

We just drafted Olivier Vernon & the kid has a lot of upside. However, I'd still draft another pass rusher b/c you never have enough of those guys.

Kris,

Well said.

When 2 watt said, "28-0," he said it all, really.

Dont be surprised if the Dolphins make Flacco a nice offer. They are one of the few teams that can afford him.

It's actually f#cking hilarious how ESPN & NFL Network put so much of the focus on the QB's in this SB & how it was the QB's who got them there.

Both TEAMS made it to their respective championship games last year b/c both TEAMS were good. Guess what??? They're both still good TEAMS. Take the O-lines away & take the running games away & both QB's will struggle. Flacco's a good NFL QB with a great arm but he's been inconsistent ALL season long & all of sudden he wins a miracle game in Denver--that they should have definitely lost--& he's elite??? Not happening. Neither QB is Brady or Manning or Rodgers or Brees or Roethlisberger okay??? Those guys are elite. Not b/c they won SB's but b/c they give their teams a chance to win one EVERY year. Even though Marino never won a SB he still gave us a chance every year.

I think Ron Jaworski just came out & said that Kaepernick could become the best QB in the NFL. Bear in mind that Jaworski is also one of the guys at ESPN who was saying that Mark Sanchez was 'special' a couple of years ago. You too Trent Dilfer!!!

Kaepernick reminds me of the great Terry Bradshaw. The guy is elite and will prove it to his naysayers shortly whether he wins on Sunday or not.

Mark Sanchez is special like that Corky character in the old show Life Goes On ... only not as talented as Chris Burke (actor who played Corky)

"Dont be surprised if the Dolphins make Flacco a nice offer. They are one of the few teams that can afford him."

Monte,

Seriously...You can't actually be that stupid can you??? The Dolphins are not making Flacco an offer b/c Flacco is not going anywhere. Even if the Ravens don't re-sign they can slap the franchise tag on him. Done.

My God! If Tannehill played like Bradshaw did in his first few years here in Miami ... people like Monte would have fodder for ages. Bradshaw was an absolute joke of an NFL player for his first few years.

We'll see .

Bradshaw is probably the most underrated QB ever.

"Mark Sanchez is special like that Corky character in the old show Life Goes On ... only not as talented as Chris Burke (actor who played Corky)"

LOL@Mark. Exactly!!!

Of course everyone knows he sucks now BUT two back to back AFC Championship games??? Tthe QB MUST be elite right??? Nothing to do with the defense or the O-line or the running game....It's all on the QB.

BTW--Mark my words--If Flacco wins then he's elite & if he loses then he's too inconsistent. Kaepernick is playing with house money b/c if he wins he's a god & if he loses then well he was too inexperienced or the pressure got to him...So stupid!!!

We'll see .

Monte,

We'll see what??? That you're an idiot. We've already seen that based on your previous comment.

Look...Even if the Ravens didn't want him back (which they DO) what team drafts a QB at 8 overall to be their future, starts that QB as a rookie, & then goes out & signs another QB for $20 Million??? If that makes sense to you then I give up...

I wish the world was filled with robotic, hybird lizard/chickens that would hurl explosive yams and gourds at peopl until the Revolution was won and they conquered the Earth, enslaving all humanity under their cruel reign of terror.

Bradshaw had only two more TDs thrown in his career than INTs. That defense must have been something fierce to win four super bowls with that anchor at QB. Just by looking at his numerous seasons at 20+ interceptions, that offense must have put that defense in plenty of holes. Bradshaw looks like he was lucky to be paired up with that supporting cast.

Dr. Yurt, that is the only interesting thing I've read on this blog in the past 3 days.

lol

Tannehill is a huge dissapointment just like Henne was. The Fins arent going to wait 3 years to go in a different direction.

Hahaha, but the Steelers waited 8 years for your boy Bradshaw to even be able to hold his own jockstrap ... sure Del Monte Foods!

Kaepernick made the Super Bowl eleven GAMES into his career. We'll be lucky if Tannehill makes the playoffs eleven YEARS into his career.

Bradshaw DID have a woefully slow start to his career. Fans like those on this board would have run him out of town and branded him a total flop those first few years, no question about it.

That said, back in that era the TD/int ratio of virtually EVERY quarterback was far more balanced than today and is somewhat of a meaningless stat when comparing QB's of that era to today.

This is because the basic rules of the game were quite different, with defensive backs allowed to play aggressive bump and run all the way downfield and ofensive linemen being restricted in how they could block (no open hands, etc.)

The rules changes in 1978 to favor offense dranatically altered the game and gave QB's from that point forward an advantage they didn't have earlier.

Ross desperately needs to make a big splash and I think it'll be at the all important QB position.

CANADIENS SHOULD STICK TO HOCKEY AND BOWLING!!!!!

We Need Playmakers @ 12:59

Yeah, it would've been great if Ireland signed Hartline earlier in the year for cheap. Hartline just happened to show a lot more production this year in his contract year than in past years so his price went up.

Ireland has his fair share of right and wrong decision. I will have a bit more confidence in him if he extends Jones because that is a priority this offseason imo.

Dont be surprised if the Dolphins make Flacco a nice offer. They are one of the few teams that can afford him.

Posted by: Monte | January 28, 2013 at 01:26 PM

Dont be suprised when they DONT!!!....and it would be dumb as hell to do that given the lack of playmakers already on this team.

I am an old Pitt fan. Bradshaw's beginning 2 years were rough in Pittsburgh but he was taking his team to the Super Bowl within 4 years. Of course, THAT team was a consensus "all time great" for a number of years. It was quite a supporting cast.

Some old timers may remember, though, that it was John Elway that had a rougher time of it. It was so bad that I still remember reports of Elway wanting to quit. Bradshaw spent more than a few hours helping his younger colleague get through the media blitzkrieg.

monte, your an idiot.

Think about how stupid it would be for miami who just spent a top pick on a young QB to be the franchise only to sign another QB a year later to a big contract considering all the holes miami still has on offense. It would also send a terrible message to potential draftees such as young QBS in the future miami might draft to hold out against miami.

It would be Eli Mannings situation again and agian for miami and even league offices would be laughing at ireland and ross. Thats a circus act you dont need on top of everything that is the problem with dolphins football right now.

Try to use some logical thinking in what you say!

IS IT TIME TO PUT OUT AN APB FOR MANDO?

Say What,

Ireland and Ross are already a circus act. The entire league is laughing at them. Desperate times need desperate measures. Tanny looks like a bust.

Man, do a lot of people here have ego complexes about the Miami Dolphins. The jets are a laughing stock, Miami is not a laughing stock ... it's a forgotten outpost. Difference!

Its not an issue about tanny being a bust or not, giving up on your top overall pick already after just one year sends a blacker eye to your organizational front office then just simply saying you werent good enough but other scouts will use that as ammo enough to convince other top players that miami is willing to give up on you in just one year if you dont become a superstar right away.

Its stupid and quite frankly something a desperate fan would only think of doing given no wieght or consequence of the decision and the teams future. If tanny is abust then thats irelands fate sealed but you have to give the kid 2-3 years before that happens. And its not good business to kick your top draft choice to the curb with the only exception being weeden in cleveland becuase of the change in owner, GM, and management.

Ireland and Ross picked tannehill, now you have to live with it for another 2-3 years. LIKE IT OR NOT!

Mark in Toronto,

I wish you were an Albanian chef specializing in octopus dishes. It would be heavenly.

Do you Albanian Peter? I was playing poker with him last night. Cleaned up at the tables ... all the cards going my way ... just one fo those night you can do know wrong. Good times..

Go Albania!

Albania rocks.

Let us all pause for a moment and reflect upon Albania and what it means to each of us, personally.

(waiting)

Thank You.

La Canfora reports dolphins Highly Unlikely to get new contract from dolphins. Team will make freindly offer however, it would be alot less than he wants.

Lamar Miller it is then as bush along with long look like for sure goners already in FA. Reports from CBS also say that Miami will allow hartline and Smith to test FA before offer is made which may be considered "LOW BALL" deals.

meant Bush to get highly unlikely new contract....

ALBANIA ONE OF FEW PLACES ON EARTH ,IS FULL OF THE WORST HUMANS ,

Long= Gone (reports say Raiders, colts, packers, and bears interested)

Bush = Gone (watch for bengals and lions interest)

Smith (reports say only Bengals and bills interested thus far *lol*)

Hartline (Chiefs, Broncos, and Tampy Bay rumored interest)
