« Revis to the Dolphins!!!: Not | Main | Fine TEs important 20 years ago and today »

The cost of doing business ain't cheap

Let's put aside the fanciful talk of adding this guy and re-signing that guy for a moment and consider what all this stuff is going to cost, shall we?

Let me scare you right off the bat:

If the Dolphins want to add an elite wide receiver this offseason in free agency -- assuming one is even available -- it is going to cost around $9-$11 million per season. That's according to former NFL agent and salary cap expert Joel Corry,  who now writes about NFL contracts and the salary cap for the National Football Post.

"The high end UFA WRs will be looking at Vincent Jackson's 5-year, $55,555,555 deal ($26M GTD) as a benchmark," Corry tweeted to me on Thursday.

That is $11 million a year, folks.

Obviously, there are two things at play that must be stipulated.

That price is for a Vincent Jackson-type wide receiver. The player asking for that money must offer that enormous amount of talent. Jackson caught 72 passes for 1,384 yards (a whopping 19.2 yards per catch) and eight TDs in 2012. I'm not certain anyone on the market rises to that level of ability.

Jackson is a deep threat all day long and he also happens to be 6-5 and 230 pounds. (Yeah, amazing).

And the $11 million is the starting asking price. It is not necessarily the final price.

While any elite wide receiver on the market may want $11, I'm sure most will be talked off that skyscrapper ledge to a much lower floor. I'd say, and this is a conservative estimate, the elite wide receiver on the market this year will get around $10 million per season and it'll fall sharply from there. Remember, Wes Welker made $9.55 million under a franchise tag in 2012 and would cost $11.4 million if tagged in 2013 -- which is unlikely.

By the way, the cost of doing business in the wide receiver market won't be cheap for the Dolphins even if they stick with what they got. Pending free agent Brian Hartline, a No. 2 receiver, will be looking for $5-$6 million per year on the open market if he gets there.

Greg Jennings? He'll be hovering in the $8-$9 million annual range.

And the price at other positions won't be much cheaper.

Elite cornerbacks are expecting $10 million per season. Agents will be looking at Brandon Carr's five-year $50 million deal with Dallas and Jason McCourty's 5-year, $43 million deal to stay in Tennesee and see that as the numbers to shoot for.

So Carr is averaging $10 million a year while McCourty is averaging $8.6 million per year.

That's the zip code cornerback Sean Smith expects to inhabit at the start of free agency. And yes, he's likely going to free agency. I don't think the Dolphins will pay that kind of money for Smith. They see him as a good player who still has unmet potential. They do not see him as a game-changer or playmaker.

There are also questions about how Smith will react professionally once he gets paid. Will he cruise? Will he feel entitled? Will the work ethic suffer?

(Kindly post comments on whether you believe Sean Smith is worth $8.6 million per season in the appropriate section below).

That's the cost of doing business, folks.

The Dolphins will be lucky to re-sign Randy Starks for the $6 million a year Paul Soliai got in March of 2012. The Herald's Barry Jackson tells me the sides have opened talks but are not close.

I'll say.

I would imagine Starks will be the highest-paid DT on the team, seeing as he's the only one that's been to a couple of Pro Bowls. But I don't see how the Dolphins can pay him the $8 million per year that Vince Wilfork makes or certainly not the $12 million per year that Haloti Ngata makes.

So that might land him in the $7 million a year slot.

That might well be the cost of doing business.

If Jake isn't signed back, then take the stud tackle at 12 then. We need to keep a solid OL. 10 million a year for Jake is out of the question at this point. Let him go then.

NO TEAM IS INTERESTED IN A (( CELLAR PLAYERS ))........

If hartline goes to Denver, that might just work out well for him since he doesnt have to score TDS(which he doesnt), just be a chain mover(which he is).

Aloco,

Have you enjoyed any of the fine octopus-based dishes prepared by talented Albania chefs?

They are God's Gift unto His children and you have no right to disparage them in such an ignorant fashion.

I hope that you are DENIED ENTRY to a fine Albanian restaurant and that ancient curses are put upon you by elderly Albanian women working there.

Sorry, that should read free agency ... I'm on no sleep here guys. I was up most of the chatting with this cool hawaiian chick on the interenet. She seems really cool, the kind of girl a guy can fall in love with ....

Arent you the same guy "supposedly" getting married? What a liar, your credibility's totally shot, as if it wasnt already. LOL....

if post at 4:37 can be believed aloco, there seem to be some playoff teams intersted in miamis FA's however I fail to see those said teams banking on those players to truly be difference makers on their team so their contracts would not be mega deal breakers either.

Sad part is that some of the best values in free agency will be our own players ... If this information can be relied upon, it will be very interesting what will happen here and it's a very risky approach by the team in my opinion.

OffSeason Prediction:

Jeff Ireland will sign some players, lose some players, and draft some players.

Based on past track record, there's little reason for dolfans to be highly optimistic.

Wonder if there's an idiot here that would like to argue those indisputable facts? LOL................

YG, that was a joke my friend and an obvious poke at the Manti T'eo ordeal. Try to follow along please ...

Super, you'd think he'd be able to find all kinds of company on the ND campus. I mean, star player of the football team??? Just so so bizarre. I still think it's a cover for being gay. Doesn't make sense any other way.

ALoco, why is it you and YG are both out to lunch on this conversation?

Aloco,

ROMANIA and BULGARIA provide most of the gypsies!

Their gypsy cuisine has many grain, lamb, and pheasant dishes but NEVER octopus!

Clearly, you are ignorant about Albanians and their cuisine, even though the COAST of Albania is only 32-minutes from ITALY by SPEEDBOAT!!

You shall never be granted entry to a fine Albanian restaurant nor shall any talented Albanian chef ever cook a meal for you, especially an octopus-based treat!

I would be very careful as ancient Albanian curses may befall you!

We have no superstars going into fa. Their only role players. We suffer from lack of impact players. Sure these players can go to teams with more of an abudance "impact players" than we have here and may do well there as "role players". But Im sure teams like this will not "overpay for them either.

We need to add a couple players that will make an "impact" on the oline, and make an impact at wr most of all.

There are not any players who are "guaranteed immediate impact" at DE, DT, CB, nor S, in either fa or draft. But thier are some "hopeful impact players" at those positions in the draft. You cant cash checks based on "HOPE".

That's true about Albania and the distance from Italy. You aren't Albanian Tony, are you? before he emigrated to Canada, he used to run several "products" by speedboat from Albania to Italy.

This team's going nowhere until the oline, wr, and te positions are fixed. Until these things are down, we'll never know what we really have in Tannehill either.

Defense, smeefense, its tough to win games in today's nfl if you struggle to score points.

Usually, if you have a pass rush worth its weight in a grain of salt. It automatically gets better when you make the opponent's offense more predictable. Being able to get double digit leads with your offense does this.

Sooner or later the opposition offense has to abandon the run(especially 4th qtrs), then the your pass rushers can pin their ears back and become the "choo-choo" express.

Pass rush is always greater once you have made the opponent "one-dimensional". This truly begins with havbing an offense that scores a lot of points.

I am not Tony and I am not Albanian. I am, however, a supporter of ALL Albanian cuisines, particularly those that are OCTOPUS-BASED as Albanians are more skilled at this ancient preparation than any other culture!!

Each time I have had an octopus-based dish prepared by an Albanian chef I have wept uncontrollably at its magnificent appearance and ethereal taste.

I have created dozens of watercolors and charcoal sketches of my Albanian-cooked octopus-based dining experiences, and these grace my home and have been commented upon by guests.

I know that I havent been here for a couple days, but this is all that I have for now. Im out again.

I dont see how denver needs another possesion reciever in hartline honestly get sense.....they have stokley and decker who are pretty good themselves in that department and a #1 in thomas, besides hartline and his agent want 5-7 million a year and denver wouldnt make sense in paying hartline that much as a "move the chains type of reciever" with limited skills in the being physical with DBs and lack of TD production...

Now it wouldnt surprise me at all if revis is sent packing to denver after what happened in the baltimore game and the jets might just be salery cap desperate enough to pull the trade if denver provided compensation enough to do it....Just Sayin!!!

Dansby not worth 12 Million per year. Pass rush heavily needed. Brady had all day throw the ball. Tired of being swept.
Ireland better draft at least one receiver from Tennessee.

ALANIANS DO THE MOST MAFIA KILLING IN EUROPE ,THEY DON'T HAVE AN ID OR REGISTERED FINGER PRINT ,,,,,

superPhin,

One last thing before I go. Youre right about Hartline. "Limited" does accurately decribe him. He doesnt catch many balls over the middle. He totally disappears in the redzone as far as catching tds.

Also, he has to be the worst "comeback pass route runner" in the nfl. Nearly everytime he runs this route with our qb's, he slips and fall, with it sometimes resulting in picks because he did slip down trying to come back to the football.

As a gm, you had better know "exactly" what you're getting when signing Hartline.

What is the mafia?

What are canadiand doing on a miami blog 24/7??

Long is not worth 10 million a year...I dont see any true GM in the league considering him at that asking price without extreme pressure from their bosses..and it would have to be a red flag to some knowing that miami will most likely let him walk with all of his success at LT to send a message that he is no longer that same player he was in years past...

Of all miamis FA's, i dont see anybody but possibly starks getting something close to what he wants in a contract in March..But we'll see...just sayin!!!

Pass rush isnt "HEAVILY NEEDED".

What are you guys looking for, 50 sacks a season? Pass rush would be considered heavily needed if we had less than 30 sacks as an entire unit. Yes it could be better, yet far from "heavily needed".

Not when considering the recieving corp and oline is "heavily needed" far more. You cant win when you cant score points. You can have 50 sacks as a defense and still finish with a below .500 win loss mark when you cant score points.

Long is worth at least 10 mill/yr.

YG,

exactly what I've been preaching to the chior about in hartline..you need explosiveness in a #2 who has the phyiscal skills to out fight someone for the ball and being more aggressive in the redzone means being more physical with that DB...

Hartlines a solid guy but he's no playmaker and I strongly believe that miami has that in mind with his potential contract negotiotions and will be very restrictive to a team friendly offer rather than settle him to a 6-7 million contract deal....

Tannehill couldnt get a point in NE. We still need a QB.

SuperPhin,

Last season was weird. As the #1 wr, I would say 90% of Hartline's catches were at or near the sidelines. That's more of what you get from a #2 wr than a #1 wr. Your #1 wr should be able to command the "entire field.

Bess, the supposed #2 wr, was catching everthing in the middle. That was weird too because both wr's were doing opposite of what they were supposed to being "traditionally in the positions they played.

Supposedly, Hartline can play "all 3 wr positions". At least that's what we were told by "Tony Sparano". Yet, we havent seen any "real evidence" that Hartline can consistently play any position if it involves playing "middle of the field".

We hadnt seen it under Sparano and we didnt see it last season under Philbin. So, imo, Hartline being able to play "all 3 wr positons" is more miff than fact. At least from what we've actually seen of him thus far in his Fins career.

Score points? Patriots had the #1 offense all year and look what happened to them. Houston high powered offense got spanked to.
Like San Fran, u need playmakers on offense and a consistent pass rush from both sides.

Steve in Ottawa,

Not being able to score in the final Pats game cannot be placed on Tannehill. There was a catchable pass dropped and I think there was a fumble down there too.

One thing I know for sure was that we didnt cash in on 14pts that game and it had absolutely nothing to do with Tannehill.

BTW, were watching that game in a different universe?

THERE ARE BEES! BEES!

BEES!

balance,

Houston's high powered offense? We are talking about the same one ran by Matt Shaub right? LOL...

As far as a team like the Niners, thats 5-6yrs of great drafting. That didnt happen overnight. Harbaugh "inherited" great talent and brought it together.

BTW, almost evry team in this year's playoffs could score points and score them abundantly. Our offense is clearly far more enemic then our defense. San Fransico has proven that even with a great defense in today's nfl, you had also better be able to score lots of points.

I'm going to be unveiling my bi-artisan 'proposal' later today.

Smooches!

Im picking the Ravens to win this year's SB based on beating easily the most "prolific scoring offense" in the nfl. Thats Brady and the Pats folks.

The Ravens have a very nice blend of vet, youth, qb, run/pass(offense), run/pass(defense) and Ray Lewis as the "soul" of that team.
