The cost of doing business ain't cheap

Let's put aside the fanciful talk of adding this guy and re-signing that guy for a moment and consider what all this stuff is going to cost, shall we?

Let me scare you right off the bat:

If the Dolphins want to add an elite wide receiver this offseason in free agency -- assuming one is even available -- it is going to cost around $9-$11 million per season. That's according to former NFL agent and salary cap expert Joel Corry,  who now writes about NFL contracts and the salary cap for the National Football Post.

"The high end UFA WRs will be looking at Vincent Jackson's 5-year, $55,555,555 deal ($26M GTD) as a benchmark," Corry tweeted to me on Thursday.

That is $11 million a year, folks.

Obviously, there are two things at play that must be stipulated.

That price is for a Vincent Jackson-type wide receiver. The player asking for that money must offer that enormous amount of talent. Jackson caught 72 passes for 1,384 yards (a whopping 19.2 yards per catch) and eight TDs in 2012. I'm not certain anyone on the market rises to that level of ability.

Jackson is a deep threat all day long and he also happens to be 6-5 and 230 pounds. (Yeah, amazing).

And the $11 million is the starting asking price. It is not necessarily the final price.

While any elite wide receiver on the market may want $11, I'm sure most will be talked off that skyscrapper ledge to a much lower floor. I'd say, and this is a conservative estimate, the elite wide receiver on the market this year will get around $10 million per season and it'll fall sharply from there. Remember, Wes Welker made $9.55 million under a franchise tag in 2012 and would cost $11.4 million if tagged in 2013 -- which is unlikely.

By the way, the cost of doing business in the wide receiver market won't be cheap for the Dolphins even if they stick with what they got. Pending free agent Brian Hartline, a No. 2 receiver, will be looking for $5-$6 million per year on the open market if he gets there.

Greg Jennings? He'll be hovering in the $8-$9 million annual range.

And the price at other positions won't be much cheaper.

Elite cornerbacks are expecting $10 million per season. Agents will be looking at Brandon Carr's five-year $50 million deal with Dallas and Jason McCourty's 5-year, $43 million deal to stay in Tennesee and see that as the numbers to shoot for.

So Carr is averaging $10 million a year while McCourty is averaging $8.6 million per year.

That's the zip code cornerback Sean Smith expects to inhabit at the start of free agency. And yes, he's likely going to free agency. I don't think the Dolphins will pay that kind of money for Smith. They see him as a good player who still has unmet potential. They do not see him as a game-changer or playmaker.

There are also questions about how Smith will react professionally once he gets paid. Will he cruise? Will he feel entitled? Will the work ethic suffer?

(Kindly post comments on whether you believe Sean Smith is worth $8.6 million per season in the appropriate section below).

That's the cost of doing business, folks.

The Dolphins will be lucky to re-sign Randy Starks for the $6 million a year Paul Soliai got in March of 2012. The Herald's Barry Jackson tells me the sides have opened talks but are not close.

I'll say.

I would imagine Starks will be the highest-paid DT on the team, seeing as he's the only one that's been to a couple of Pro Bowls. But I don't see how the Dolphins can pay him the $8 million per year that Vince Wilfork makes or certainly not the $12 million per year that Haloti Ngata makes.

So that might land him in the $7 million a year slot.

That might well be the cost of doing business.

billcale,

I'm a big fan of your posts but I don't get your post @11:08am. Don't get why you're cutting all our CBs and resigning Starks. Those moves make no sense to me. I know everyone is all over Marshall right now but I think if he's healthy he'll prove to be a capable CB on this team. Also, not sure I get why you want the two linemen you mentioned from the Jets. The Jets line struggled last year and I'm not sure why you'd want them. Didn't Howard get benched last year because he couldn't get it done? I don't see why he's work here (we're you thinking he'd be a backup?).

Justin,

IMO Jeff Ireland will be very busy during the draft. I realize that bothers a lot of people. Eleven picks in the draft....5 of the first 90 picks. I'm of the opinion that he'll target certain players in the draft and he'll do what he can to land them. How great would it be if he were to land Patterson, Ertz, good pass rush and a safety? To me, if he comes away with a haul like this, I couldn't care less what he does with the rest of the picks. This would upgrade the team in a big way. On top of that, I'd like to see him add a Jennings or Wallace and add a TE like Cook in FA. He's also going to have to resign Long, add an OT in the draft or sign someone in FA. Lots to be done.

MiamiD20, I think defenses are going to adjust and I believe all three of the rushing qbs numbers will decrease in their second season. They run the option and almost every player in the NFL has played against a team who ran the same exact offense in college. Defenses in college regularly stop it and the NFL will adjust as they always do. There are far too many egos on the defensive side of the ball that are already licking their chops about being the blueprint makers. Just one mans opinion but we will see.

Odinseye what's up man where ya been! I see you're back to schooling ALoco, funny stuff.

Nice to read that the commisioners have very quickly given the thumbs up to the stadium deal. Not only that but they are urging local politicians and the state to back them up and get this thing started.

Eventhough the ignorant fans see this as a handout their leaders don't care. They realize a revamped sun life will bring far more back in revenue than they will give. It will help the surrounding area to grow from an economic standpoint. Everyone wins, except Dolphin haters.

Phins78,

I believe NFL defenses will adjust to the read-option these qb's run.

What I like about these qb's however, is they seem to be good passing qb's regardless, and can use their scrambling ability to create problems for defenses.

Wow,

Really had to decipher some crazy sh #t to make that last post.

Bill, are you advocating the signings of Austin Howard and Matt Slauson?

NO THANK YOU!

Living 30min outside NYC and being blessed with the opportunity to watch the Jests every week I would like to vouch in favor of NOT signing either if those players. They are both about as good as John Jerry at best and that's pushing it. Jest fans were calling for the heads since last season.

If our solution for the right side goes thru either of those two I'm going to be very very po'd.

Smith 5 million tops! He shouldn't get that...think about how many game changing interceptions that guy has dropped!

Posted by: Phins78 | January 26, 2013 at 11:57 AM

I agree completely. This is why I want to wait before making an opinion on the 3 of those QBs. Which is why I say 'I'm not sold on them yet'

Absolutely Signal. I'm definitely not trying to take anything away from these guys, they are tremendous athletes and we would be lucky to have any one of them. I'm looking forward to watching them make adjustments and seeing who comes out on top when all is said and done.

When defenses are better prepared to deal with the run option,WRs won't be running wide open down the field as much because there will be better coverage in the defensive backfield. That will force the QBs to make better pre snap reads and will also force them to make accurate throws to receivers who will be better covered.

And I already can't wait for next season. Eight months is far too long a wait!

Craig, Howard is a reserve who played well in 2012. The Jets want him back but have no money to reward him. He is the 9th highest rated FA tackle by Pro Football Focus. Only want 1 guard. Both, again, are highly rated FAs by PFF and may be happy with the nice raises the Dolphins could give them. These acorns improve the OL (for THIS year!) as all these guys are rated higher than any Dolphin except Incognito. Better line play = better QB play and running game.

I hate that our corners can neither catch nor tackle nor play the ball. Marshall, while a second round pick, is very worrisome with a back injury and didn't show a whole lot while healthy. Ireland has to make FA decisions with his own ex-Dolphins before he can go after others. I just think it's best to forget Marshall and use his money to find new blood.

I like Starks, Soliai and Odrick for the DTs. No degradation along the DLine.

Now, the OL is improved; the CBs, with Patterson, Lewis and McCann are improved; You can use the $9M for a superior WR or CB and still have 9 draft picks (how are you getting 11?) to improve WR, TE, CB, OL or your choice.

Hey lets see how many times I can use the words "far too" in a sentence. Sheesh

billcale,

Some valid points. I'm not sold on Howard or the guard and I'm not convinced the Jets will let him go. Yes they have cap problems but I think they'll figure some of it out.

I agree with need some improvements with the line but not convinced this is the way to go. I like Lewis to help the secondary but I'm not convinced we need to chop Marshall. I think a healthy Marshall, at a reduced salary would be an asset in the secondary, with Lewis.

Signing these ultra high priced free agents only work for teams that 99% complete. Teams that have been rebuilding for years now do not see the same kind of benefits. Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall are prime examples. They have good numbers but how much have they contributed to winning records! Any high priced free agent will not make as huge of an impact as you think. If this team is true rebuild mode, then they will continue to do that, which means looking for big players through the draft. The fins number one priority is to see of Tannehill is legit. If he is not then all the free agent signings are useless. Now having said that, if they do go signing a free agent it will only be a WR and only to see if Tanne is legit. Sean Smith is gone, and after his first year with a new team he will not be starting. His work ethic is poor, he doesn't have good make up speed so once he gets beat he slows up. If he bulks up he can learn a saftey position and probably do well.

One of the MANY things DaShe and odindrivel have in common?

They both can't go ONE SINGLE DAY without referencing gayness or dikness in their posts.

Yet most bloggers are sooooo desperate for football talk that they oblige them.

If anyone remembers my posts on Smith you would know how little faith I have in his abilities. I have said it a lot, I also was able to point out at least two mental mistakes that cost the team yards or points in almost every game this year. It's far too often that these mistakes occur and they are worse then simply being beat from time to time. The mental errors he makes speak to his lack of understanding of the big picture. He is too stuck playing it by the book (thanks Tony!) and rarely makes adjustments in game. If you are in zone coverage but there are no backs swinging to your side for a pass it is okay to break your zone and stick on a wr who is running a go or slant. This will allow the assigned defender to give over the top coverage virtually eliminating that receiver from the play. But no, not Smith, he plays it by the book and the opposition gets 30 yards on a pass play that could have been easily defended. In the play I'm speaking of Sean stayed in his zone all by himself evethough there was not a single player in position on his side after the initial receiver broke through his area. He has no awareness.

Sean Smith is an average player- at times he plays well but often not so good. We want game changers and turnover producers in the secondary - Sean Smith is not that at all and often enjoys dropping most balls that come his way. If he hasn't stepped up yet, he never will - Losing him will make this secondary worse but they will need to find ways to improve quick through the draft and free agency. I would not pay him much!

Craig, MiamiD20; was just trying to show how Ireland could fix the OL, CBs and have something left in the bank for a big name in FA. Decisions will be tough and replacement guys, while apparent upgrades, may not work out. But, overall, I believe the team is improved with the choices I gave and best, it can be accomplished within the cap. I could give better players but they will cost more and then I will have to downgrade other positions. Tough job for Ireland was my topic.

I would like to see how Marshall will perform this year also. Since he is already under contract, the team can give him his chance in preseason. I would not back off the pursuit of other CBs, though.

about SEAN SMITH...

thinking back to the glory days of pat surtain, maddison, and sammy knight sways my design and concept wishlist for the secondary to take on a more physically intimidating approach, with reshad jones, the secondary has the perfect safety in place to build it into one that hits so hard that the entangible of fear becomes previlent and will account for additional incompletions and errant throws...YES, miami should stay away from the smaller defensive backs, but if there are(and there will be) freeagents who are more physical, with better stats, who have identical or better coverage skills and are asking for similar monies...go for it, but in my opinion, miami has more pressing issues on offense, to talk about upgrading sean smith's position while our ground game lacks a powerback, AND the tight-end position is non-exisistant, AND tackle, guard, and new QB is questionable, AND while many teams have at least TWO stud recievers, we possess a brian hartline....well....that's like focusing on printing game tickets when nobody is buying them....
