Complete list of restricted free agents according to NFLPA

A few years ago the New England Patriots identified a restricted free agent they truly liked -- thanks to a recommendation from a friend of Bill Belichick named Nick Saban -- and they went after the player.

No, they didn't end up signing Wes Welker as a restricted free agent. But they did work out a trade for him with the Miami Dolphins.

That was 2007. Restricted free agency has seen precious few players changing teams since then despite the success Welker has had with New England. The fact is as draft picks have become more valuable (based on the fact rookies now make less) fewer teams are willing to give draft pick compensation for players that will also come with new contracts.

Nonetheless, the NFL Players Association collects the list of players that do not have four years in the league but are out of contract as restricted free agents.

I love you Armando. Will you be my friend? I have no friends. :(

From the last blog, yeah a bookend of Kruger and Wake would definitely make me think the huge pricetag would be worth it. Imagine no double teams on both at the same time ... sigh

If you can work out a trade for Ed Dickson from this list, do it. He's buried behind Pitta and is from that draft class of 2010. Athletic guy ...

In going over this list it's evident we can address the WR pos. and probably will. You can even make a case for doubling down bringing in older cheaper players like Carolina's S.Smith as well who can still run and at 32 I believe still has something in the tank while playing every pos. at WR which Philbin seems to favor. At T.E. Martellus Bennett should come in at a reasonable price were I offer Fasano 3 Mil Per or give him his walking papers trying my hand with Bennett while drafting another player at the pos. as well.

There are also some LB's on that list who could come in and immediately improve our pass coverage for more Vet friendly prices (McIntosh, Peterson) but say NO to the thought of a S. like Byrd because of the class coming into the draft.

Aside from being our best DB R.Jones is very flexible having played both S.S. and F.S. then take into account the group at either pos. coming in you have arguably on paper the deepest group at S. ever with the following.

Kenny Vaccaro FS 1 Texas Sr 6-1 218 1
Eric Reid FS 2 LSU Jr 6-2 212 2
Phillip Thomas FS 3 Fresno State rSr 6-1 210 2
Bacarri Rambo FS 4 Georgia rSr 6-1 215 3
Tony Jefferson FS 5 Oklahoma Jr 5-11 212 3
T.J. McDonald FS 6 Southern California Sr 6-2 211 3-4

Then the S.S. group has Matt Elam (UF) Great ball hawk!, F.I.U. has a kid named Jonathan Cyprien who can play and will go somewhere RD-2,3. Georgia's Shawn Williams and Bama's Lester round off a tough group were you can get a marked improvement over S.S. Chris Clemmons maybe taking a F.S. and moving the big R.Jones over to S.S. were he played as well in College.

The knock on R.Jones coming out of Georgia were the bad angles he took over pursuing getting torched deep but here is were Fins DC Koyle did his best work with Jones playing his lanes under control and in large part being the only real deep D we had.

I believe CB J.Banks overrated at 12 and if this were the route then would entertain moving back to pick 20 and taking FSU CB X.Rhodes. Only if the compensation were additional 2 were I maybe gamble on one of those ultra fast WVU WR's with the added pick. If staying at 12 then BA kicks in and for my money at that slot the player is Chance Warmack who is a day one starter moving Jerry out to RT. In that scanario although we have to address the Tackle spot again in RD-2 or 3 hoping the OL Coach can mold a guy with the impending departure of J.Long.

Further on Dickson, look what he did the year before last as the starter at TE. 54 catches, 528 yards, 5 tds. Still only 25. If you can pry him away cheaply - he would be a guy to have.

fin4life, Smith apparently signed a long term extension with the Panthers.

Intriguing idea of Chance Warmack and kicking Jerry out to RT as an option ...

Lots of ways this can play out... can't wait.

Mark,

Hadn't heard of the pending Smith deal, seems all anybody in Miami can do since yesterday morning is discuss Marino's sex life.

J.Jerry played RT at Miss. St. in College and on occasion has for us as well the thing with him is what shape he shows up in.

Regarding RFA I thought that was the best option with Long from the perspective of tendered player but feel everybody calling our bluff forcing us to eat 15 Mil. on him 2013.

f4l, I wouldn't tag any of our free agents. Not saying all aren't worthy players but none should be paid top 10 - maybe long if they think he can recover health wise. But his number is outrageous.

According to sportrac.com, Steve Smith signed a 4 year, $37.5M deal.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/steve-smith/

Yeah, aware of Jerry's abilities as a RT. There are some options there as to what to do on the O-line.

Mark,

BLOWN AWAY! By that # for S.Smith, I figured he'd get in the 5 Mil. a Yr. range. Is that a backloaded deal like the JT 11 Mil 2 Yr. deal with the Jets which was really a 1 Yr. 2.5 Mil. deal with the 2nd Yr. optional??

By the way Mark back in 95 there was this SMOKING HOT blonde lady lawyer working in house council were I worked who lived in Weston and was very married who proudly told anybody who would listen that she had sex with Marino in 93 while he was at home full time getting over his Achilles injury. If you'd seen this woman you wouldn't have questioned her about it to much given she was one HELL of a FIVE ALARM FIRE. Common knowledge Dan laid more pipe in Weston than the plummers.

f4l, as Mando said, business in free agency won't be cheap. So if you're talking about a guy you know is a good player - it's going to be expensive.

And not surprised about marino. I assume Claire is a nice lady and wonderful mother but come on she's no hottie .... you are a prolific NFL Superstar... if he's not divorced, he's cheating.

Saw the same thing happen with Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Decent but unspectacular looking wife. He makes it big - divorce. Now you know that guy was loyal for a while.

Mark,

I looked up the specifics of the Smith deal and it guarantees 18 Mil over 3 Yrs. at a 6 Mil. base. I doubt he sees the 20 Mil over 2 Yrs. during 2016-17, he deserves it and still plays at a high level. I did however think it wouldn't go over 5.5 at the most but 6 isn't overly crazy for a guy who brings it every Sunday and some on here talking about Hartline and that number.

By the way on the Marino thing here are photo's of the Mistress and she really isn't all that considering this may cause him his cushy gig at CBS given there contracts state no funny business with Co-Workers.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2271114/Dan-Marino-fathered-love-child-Donna-Savattere-2005-paid-millions-quiet.html#axzz2Jfx4j7ks

It wasn't exactly 'a secret' that Marino got around. A lot of professional athletes, musicians, actors, etc. do regardless of whether they're married or not. Not a great deal for their wives but what do I care???

The UGLY part of this story is that he had a KID with this other woman like Schwarzenegger which is creepy....

Marino is a jackass pig!!

Check out the rack on ms. Savattere.

Keep in mind Dan-O did this at 50 and he's no George Clooney... I'd say he still did pretty good.

The thing is that women don't seem to care if a guy is married or not .. a lot just don't. Until they fall in love - then it all becomes messy.

I'm hearing Marino's girlfriend is a choker too!

"By the way on the Marino thing here are photo's of the Mistress and she really isn't all that considering this may cause him his cushy gig at CBS given there contracts state no funny business with Co-Workers."

Fin4life,

Not sure how much they pay him at CBS but I think he's pretty set financially.

If you can work out a trade for Ed Dickson from this list, do it. He's buried behind Pitta and is from that draft class of 2010. Athletic guy ...

Mark in Toronto | February 01, 2013 at 01:23 PM

Just caught this and if he could be had for a reasonable price then consider me on board. I don't get why the Ravens don't go more multiple T.E. sets with a 6'4"/250 Pd. kid running a 4.6/40 on the bench. You wonder about him as a blocker but you get the feeling the toughness is there given he also played DE in College. Interesting left field toss on your behalf.

f4l, re: Ed Dickson, I was always a fan of this guy and wanted him back in 2010. Please don't make mego over the painful memories of how Ireland missed on all these guys in that TE class.

Dickson was a bigger part of the Ravens offense last year than this year. Dickson struggled with some injuries this year BUT he's a pretty good football player. He's not going anywhere.

f4l, re: Ed Dickson, I was always a fan of this guy and wanted him back in 2010. Please don't make mego over the painful memories of how Ireland missed on all these guys in that TE class.

Mark,

Ireland??? Nahhhhh....Best evaluator of talent in the NFL!!!

Sorry guys, I'm late to the party. I haven't fully digested the list that Armando posted earlier but I'll spend some more time looking at it over the weekend. There's some names that jump out me right away and I dare say that they did to most of you too. I've seen some of the names posted and there's some good ideas there. The one that I didn't quite get is Ed Dickson. I like this guy a lot. Why are you guys suggesting the Ravens would consider trading him? Is a RFA some time soon? I could be wrong but I believe the Ravens signed this guy so that they can have a two TE formation. This works perfectly for Flacco. What's the rationale for them to give him up? What would we have to give up to get him do you think? I'm curious....

We Need Playmakers | February 01, 2013 at 02:31 PM

Upon retiring Marino had earned 40 Mil. over his 17 Yr. career which is half what the QB's get today in one 4 to 5 Yr. deal. A Mansion in Lauderdale and a Pent House at the Marina Yhatt club plus a Home in Pitt. and his parents along with 7 kids and he better have good Financial advisers given he gets 2 Mil. a Yr. from CBS.

The one thing is his stake in Nat'l Waste management which is owned by Huzienga who gave Marino minority ownership in it I believe back in 95 before the NFL caught wind and said it was an illegal incentive were I'm sure they could work an angle around it but Marino and Elway didn't make the money playing you might think.

In 85 Marino signed during a 36 day holdout the largest deal ever given a QB at 6 Yrs./7 Mil. check the #'s if you want but I remember it perfectly having lived through it with our S.B. QB holding out and then a day later Elway's deal surpassed Marino's by $1.00, yes you read correct one Dollar!

The difference is Elway apparently did more than play Football up in Stanford and started a Car dealership in Colorado which was valued at one point at 500 Mil. with Florida car magnet Huzienga offering to buy and Elway not selling.

The one thing that jumped out at me when looking at the list this morning is that there are some CBS out there that I would rather have than Sean Smith. I'm now convinced that Sean Smith at anything close to $7-8 million is a JOKE. Not interested! You guys have done a good job talking about some of the possibilities and I'd be interested in those guys but the other guy I liked on the list (don't know if he's been mention yet) is Leonis McKelvin in Buffalo. A GREAT athlete and a good cover. He's been a little inconsistent but I sometimes wonder if that's the system he's playing and the players he's playing with. By the way (and I know it's been said already) but Jarrius Byrd would be a GREAT addition on this team. I don't know the Bills cap situation but it'll be interesting to see where they are cap-wise.

Craig and Playmakers, Dickson is a RFA. They are $15M under the cap for next year. However, they have to sign Flacco. They also need to make decisions on four of their best players in Ed Reed (may retire but wh knows?), Paul Kruger, Dennell Ellerbe, and Cary Willims.

So all of a sudden their cap figure becomes very bleek. They certainly will have a lot of tough decisions come Monday after the Super Bowl.

Dickson must know he may have value to a team like Miami. And he won't want to be nailed to the bench in Baltimore. If Miami can press Newsome for the rights to this guy for a draft pick, it may be in Baltimore's best interests to trade him. Baltimore has a lot of good players to pay and even though Dickson is a good one, he certainly falls down the pecking order there.

Maybe an excellent value for Miami if they can get him for one of their 3rd round picks or even a 4th depending on how desperate Baltimore is for relief.

Craig, surprising you advocate for McKelvin considering you live in the area and hear people rip him apart all the time on the radio. he's an awwesome athlete, all world returner, but a less than medioccre corner.

What's the rationale for them to give him up? What would we have to give up to get him do you think? I'm curious....

Craig M | February 01, 2013 at 02:42 PM

They don't have to want to trade you just tender an offer and they either match or you get the player by giving up the compensatory pick based on the Dollar amount of the deal compared to highest payed at position. The Ravens by the way don't employ the 2 T.E. set as much as you allude and are spreading the field in multiple WR sets since Caldwell took over as OC and I think that has worked wonders for Flacco given his strength as he showed in the playoffs is the deep toss.

Mark,

EXCELLENT points. Sorry I missed the fact he was a RFA. Looks like Pitta is a RFA too. Yeah the teams got some questions to answer there. I think Kruger will be gone but that's just my opinion. I don't believe they'll be able to do all the things they need to do AND resign Kruger. No worry for them, if anyone can draft a replacement Newsome and his staff will.

It's going to be interesting to see what do with Flacco. He's made himself as whole lot of money this offseason. It's crazt to thing but he could be something like a $12 million year man now and be thankful we don't have to pay that for our QB. I like Cary Williams too. Be interesting to see what they do with him. He could be another cap casualty.

good points f4l, In the pecking order Dickson is no better than a 4th option (Smith, Boldin, Pitta). If Miami drops in an offer for about $3M a year, they will balk or try to work out a trade.

Craig,

I would like to play bongos and pet bunnies with you.

One more point on Marino and alot of 80's GREATS feeling shafted in the Money game. Dan's rookie deal was worth 800K over 4 Yrs.

Joe Rose on his morning show mentions it all the time about how Marino took his 1st check and bought himself a Corvette not a Ferrari.

fin4life,

Thanks for the clarification. You're right, they don't do as much with the two TE formation as I alluded to earlier but I wonder if it might not be on the horizon in the near future. They're going to have to make a decision on Boldin too and I wouldn't be surprised to see him gone also.

Mark,

I'd have no problem with a 3rd or 4th for either of those TEs. Good plan! Much better than anything we have here currently. With McKelvin, I think what we're hearing is a lot of what we hear about our guys....too much complaining from the fans because we're close to it. I'm not saying McKelvin is a TOP corner, I just like his athleticism. I wonder if he bites the bullet because they have a lot of good athletes back there and might be too tight on the cap. He's a bit hit and miss, but I have to wonder if it can't be corrected. I'd take a chance on him.

Just as a i Figured, RFA rules are a little fugged here as it pertains to RFAs. You can't just blow the team away with a high offer or they can ask for your first pick.

He was the 3rd round pick of the Ravens (Thanks again john jerry) and an offer of $1.26M per year would give Baltimore the right to ask for miami's 3rd round pick this year (12th in that round) in exchange for the rights to the player. However at that offer, you'd think Baltimore would just match.

Anyway, wouldn't hurt for Ireland to inquire here about a trade and get a handle as to what Dickson's role would be in their future.

t's going to be interesting to see what do with Flacco. He's made himself as whole lot of money this offseason. It's crazt to thing but he could be something like a $12 million year man now and be thankful we don't have to pay that for our QB. I like Cary Williams too. Be interesting to see what they do with him. He could be another cap casualty.

Craig,

$12 Million??? For Flacco??? Not happening. More like $17-18 Million a year (minimum) & if they don't get a deal done they'll franchise him which will cost $14.5 Million.

Schefter said that not including Flacco--The Ravens are $5 Million over next year's cap so something has to give. Cary Williams??? Paul Kruger??? IMO--They'll both hit the FA market.

Craig,

Will you play with my tail a lil more? I like when you straddle it between your legs.

We Need Playmakers,

Listen I tip my hat to Joe Flacco. He's done it when it mattered. He's shown me something I didn't think he was capable of. But $17-18 million????.....Crazy money!!

Understand, I'm not doubting what you are saying. I'm just saying, Joe Flacco isn't worth anything close to that. He's not. I'll get a lot of argument from people here but I don't see him as a top ten ten QB. I just don't. Not taking anything away from what he's done but I still say Baltimore had NO business beating Denver. If the secondary didn't have their brain cramps we woouldn't even be having this conversation.

Good luck to them....

Playmakers, yeah Flacco contract is going to be a poison pill for that team resulting in them having to let go some solid pieces $12M a year will not do it. Miami should be chomping on the bit to sign some of their players. Like I said in the last blog, Kruger at $10M+ per season. Bookend him with Cam Wake and Odrick getting one on ones in the middle and Misi and Vernon blitzing from the LB position in a "joker" position and watch the QB fall.

Craig, i know it sounds crazy but look at the top 10 cap hits for QBs next year ....

1 Tom Brady at
Quarterback
$21,800,000
2 Matthew Stafford at
Quarterback
$21,227,083
3 Eli Manning at
Quarterback
$20,850,000
4 Ben Roethlisberger at
Quarterback
$20,595,000
5 Peyton Manning at
Quarterback
$20,000,000
6 Drew Brees at
Quarterback
$17,400,000
7 Tony Romo at
Quarterback
$17,228,000
8 Philip Rivers at
Quarterback
$17,110,000
9 Michael Vick at
Quarterback
$16,900,000
10 Carson Palmer at
Quarterback
$16,891,667

Flacco at $17M cap hit does not sound absurd.

The figure for franchising Flacco will indeed be $15M for next year. Average salary of the top ten players at the position.

The only RFA that I remember getting traded was when NE schooled Mueller/Cameron on Wes Welker for a 2nd round pick.

If it wasn't bad enough trading Welker for a 2nd, we traded him to a team in our division So for all the people who think that it was all Parcells' fault or all Ireland's fault or all Ross' fault--they have short memories b/c this team was f#cked well before they took over. Have they sucked too??? Absolutely but the drafts are a LITTLE better than Cameron's, Saban's, & Wanny's.

I think they are a lot better than Wannstedt's drafts. Those killed the team for a generation. he drafted but three roster players in his whole time ... Vernon Carey, Chris Chambers, and Randy McMichael ... in 5 years!!! Let that sink in a bit.

Saban was so so (Ronnie Brown, matt Roth, Channing Crowder in two years), Cameron gave us big paul at least and the overdrafted but somewhat productive and polarizing Tedd Ginn.

In comparison, Ireland has been a godsend. he is actually adequate but the difference between those predecessors and adequate is huge!

Mark,

It's absurd in my eyes. I'm all for having a top QB but to me Flacco's not that guy. Forget for a moment what he's done in the playoffs this year. Is he a guy that carries a team? For the guys that will argue just how special Flacco is because of what the team has done this year, will they also argue the merits of Sanchez because he took them to two straight Championship games? Sorry I'm not buying the argument.

I think the window for the Ravens is starting to close. If you're going to allocate that kind of money for Flacco, you'd BETTER not miss on too many draft picks going forward. With Lewis retiring, and Reed close to the end and Boldin likely not back, it's going to be a a very different team next year. I still think they are better than the Steelers but it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Ravens miss the playoffs next year. For me, the team to watch in that divsion will be the Bengals.

Craig,

Of course he's not worth that!!! But Neither is Tony Romo or Philip Rivers or Matt Ryan or even Eli Manning. None of those guys are ELITE.

ELITE QB's give their teams A CHANCE to win a SB every year--even if the rest of their team isn't great like Marino or Elway.

There are five ELITE QB's that are worth this kind of money;

1) Brady
2) Peyton
3) Rodgers
4) Brees
5) Roethlisberger

So our drafts suck a lilttle less than they have sucked. Should that make us hopeful?

We should be striving for consistently good drafts. Not sucking less than we did years ago.

The only way this team can find good players is to overpay them after another team found, developed & used them.

This team is going NOWHERE with it's current people in place.

Craig, I would agree that Flacco needs a supporting cast to be effective. In fact, Ray Rice should get 10% of Flacco's money. However, look at it from their eyes. Trent Dilfer, Elvis Grbac, Kyle Boller, Anthony Wright. This team is one that can sympathize with our QB drought. They don't have a choice. Luckily they have the best talent acquisition staff in the business and for the rest of Joe Flacco's career they will definitely earn their money because they will be dealing with 10% less cap space to put a good supporting cast around him.

But this team not only hits on their picks, Dannell Ellerbe I learned today was an undrafted free agent. Not a guy from the CFL who looked ready to kick it up a notch after developing late - a true college undrafted free agent.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! WE'RE TIRED OF THE CLASSLESS INCOMPETENT GM! RESTORE OUR TEAM TO OUR FORMER GLORY!HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

Wow!!....Walter's lastest mock has us taking Kenny Vaccarro, safety from Texas. I know this will make some very happy, including Andy from NJ and while I agree we have to upgrade the position, I'm just not sure this is the way to go. It's not a knock on Vaccarro (who I like an awful lot), just wondering if this is the best use of our resources.

Ross is too cheap to pay for a good QB.

WNPs @3:44pm,

Can't disagree with anything you've said there. Right on the NOSE....

*Their

That cheap SOB Ross will get rid of some good players that are FA's and pocket most of the salary cap space rather then upgrade the team. I wouldnt give that SOB another nickel of my money.

Craig, Walter has no idea who we will draft. he has a new guy to us every week. I like Vaccaro tho. Depending on what they do in free agency, he may be the right guy.

How can one become enthusiastic about this or any other FA or draftee list, when one knows Ireland is still here and is guaranteed to foul-up the off-season.

FIRE HIM NOW!

FYI,

I don't disagree with anything you said. However even a broken clock is right twice a day so MAYBE Ireland & his staff can get lucky in this draft....That's all I got.

Mark,

Agreed....on both points.

"Luckily they have the best talent acquisition staff in the business and for the rest of Joe Flacco's career they will definitely earn their money because they will be dealing with 10% less cap space to put a good supporting cast around him."

If not the best than right up there. I really like what they've done in SF & Seattle over the last three years. I love teams that have dominating O-lines that run the ball down your throat!!! I thought Parcells was going to bring this to Miami BUT he failed.

Ross is too cheap to pay for a good QB.

Harmel,

Get this through your dense skull already. You're talking about an owner that is willing to put up $200 Million of his own money to help renovate the stadium after he paid over a $1.1 Billion to buy 95% of the stadium.

Do you understand what the word 'cheap' even means??? It means thrifty or frugal & thrifty or frugal people don't pay over $1 Billion for football teams w/o taking on MULTIPLE financing partners for fear of losing their investment.

Craig M is for MORON.

ELITE QB's give their teams A CHANCE to win a SB every year--even if the rest of their team isn't great like Marino or Elway.

I don't think Marino qualifies to be in that discussion....ONE SB appearance in 17 years (and none in the last 15 years of his career) is NOT the definition of "giving you're team a chance to win a SB every year".....

Craig, do not listen to them!

You are dear to me and I treasure our time shopping together at the mall, getting our hair done, or just gossiping over Latte at Starbucks. I also admire your great sense of style (sassy!) and you ALWAYS have the best shoes!!

I am lucky to be your friend.

We Need Playmakers,

You are very naive. Ross SAYS that he will put money up FOR HIS BUSINESS IF the taxpayers give him a free handout FOR HIS REAL ESTATE. What a deal!! He suckers celebrities and fans into giving him money while all he does is lose games. You are VERY naive and YOU are the one with the dense skull!

Kris, Peyton Manning only ever did make it to two, Brees one and won't make another one, Rodgers one ... not much different. And marino would've won a super bowl or at least made more in today's era of free agency. I mean no way Buffalo would've been able to hold that team together in today's NFL.

Ross is worth 4.4 BILLION and is begging for handouts! GEEZ!
