Complete list of restricted free agents according to NFLPA

A few years ago the New England Patriots identified a restricted free agent they truly liked -- thanks to a recommendation from a friend of Bill Belichick named Nick Saban -- and they went after the player.

No, they didn't end up signing Wes Welker as a restricted free agent. But they did work out a trade for him with the Miami Dolphins.

That was 2007. Restricted free agency has seen precious few players changing teams since then despite the success Welker has had with New England. The fact is as draft picks have become more valuable (based on the fact rookies now make less) fewer teams are willing to give draft pick compensation for players that will also come with new contracts.

Nonetheless, the NFL Players Association collects the list of players that do not have four years in the league but are out of contract as restricted free agents.

Marino was the biggest choke artist in sports history.

When yo put it that way....it makes me re-think my position....

one counter-point....Saints have a good drafting order this year...and a HC with EVERYTHING to prove...look for Brees to get a 2nd SB in the next 2 years....

Ross is asking no more and no less than many others who have sought stadium improvements, most recently in New Orleans to bring the Superdome up to date.

It doesn't mean he will get what he is seeking but it would be extraordinarily stupid of him not to TRY. If you were in the same position you would, too, unless you were a piss poor businessman.

And by the way, the stadium is now nearly 30 years old and quite dated by NFL standards. It DOES need significant upgrades however it gets paid for. I don't think raising the hotel bed tax is a bad idea at all to invest in a facility that brings a lot of money and attention to the region, but we can differ on that.

Victor Cruz please...And someone tell Ireland that the Gronkowski on the list isn't the good one from the Pats...

I would be interested in giving Darius Butler a serious look in free agency if we don't want to break the bank on Smith. Mando actually mentioned him a while back.

Drafted in the second round by the Pats in 09. Released after not producing. Picked up by the Colts and had 4 picks in 11 games. Only 5'10.5" tall. Started for the Colts after Vontae and I forgot the other guys name got hurt. Has the ideal size to be a nickel corner I think and play the slot man.

Mark in Mississauga,

Have you ever stared at a plate of scrambled eggs for nine straigh hours?

Good job Playmakers, glad someone finally said something to Harmel.

Has he even heard of a salary cap??

Kris, I would bet you a virtual steak dinner that the Saints and Brees never make it back to the big one. That defense is beyond atrocious. I mean, I don't even think those guys played college ball by the looks of it. Brees will be what, 35 next year? The NFC is also a tricky, tricky maze. I don't see it happening. But anything is possible I guess.

Hahaha, Turd, good one.

Also I have more of a chance of developing a third nipple than anyone has of prying VIctor Cruz away from the Giants.

Harmel just said, and I quote: "All Ross does is lose games".

ROTFLMAO - Nuff Said!

Guys like McKelvin and Byrd are interesting. We wouldn't have to break the bank for guys at that level.

Add in a highly drafted corner and our secondary is upgraded significantly. Of course considering what we went with this past season, almost anyone would be an upgrade.

Signing restricted free agents can be sketchy. Its sometimes just a way for players to get what they want to stay where their at.

Benny my man, I used to live in Mississauga so nice catch.

No, I have not. What kind of things would I expect to happen if I did that?

You ever slap a Llama on the behind? I wouldn't suggest it, they tend to act adversely.

If Ross would concentrate on winning instead of the logo, hard knocks, the stadium, and celebrities.......he'd get all the money he wants.

Oops, I meant Butler above. Not Byrd.

I'll take you up on that....

The Saints D than won the SB was bad.....just like the Colts D that won the SB (ranked 32 out of 32)...just like the Packers D that won.....

This year is the ANOMALY SB...thats what they should call it....but even being such....I believe both of these teams have put up 40 plus points @ times during the season...with the Ravens topping 50 twice....

Matk...a GREAT "O" makes a mediocre D look stellar.....and the Saints STILL have a great "O"....

Kris, great post. Agree w/everything you said.

Ah, another fool that actually thinks the logo change has ANYTHING to do with the football side of the operation.

There's always some dumb stuff on this blog but that one always tops the list.

Hi there Dashi!

Hi there "Harmel".

The Dolphins have always toyed with the logo the color scheme etc. Selling merchandise is part of the business.

Also, although I think it was mostly coinsidence, the Bucs and Rays improved bigtime after a major logo and color scheme change. Maybe it was karma?

Hey, I own a business too. If the taxpayers give me a handout I'll say I'll invest in my business!!!

NOrmally Kris, I woudl agree with you on O v D. However, the Saints had a great O this year, #1 on O, #32 on D. That tells you how bad their D was that even with a #1 O they still finished #32. I honestly think that was one of the all time worst defenses in this year's Saints. I mean it's not even a case of Turnover Ratio helping out that defense as they were pretty good this year finishing at 14th. That defense is so abysmally poor that they need years to fix it. I don't know if there's anyone on that unit that is a keeper (Maybe Jenkins?)

And at 35 , just like Tom brady, Brees is not all of a sudden going to get better. Sure he will still eb good enough to get you to the post season and make you a marquee matchup for someone but the days of walking through the NFL are over. Come playoff time, someone will slap him in the mouth just like Tommy Boy this year.

I for one am GLAD that Ross stays OUT of the Football Operations dept.

The only time I noticed an intrusion was when he stepped in and insisted we try and get Manning. And I'm not going to blame the guy for THAT.

Thanks Jay.....

Ross also picked Tannehill.....

So what are the predictions? Which QB is gonna finally crack in the postseason??

I cant believe the young Kapernick has had hardly any turnovers.

Will Ray Lewis and Ed Reed change that??

Ross also picked Tannehill.....

Posted by: Phinmanski | February 01, 2013 at 05:02 PM

Philbin and Sherman had nothing to do with that. Say "Hi" to "Twinky" for us...........

you're forgetting the Peyton Factor.....Sean Peyton....

I think....Sean is worth a few extra wins....and he gets that D playing @ a respectable level.....If the Saints can get Home field advantage (and that Offense can)....they will be a formidable 2013 team....

Dolphin Rick,

I predict the Ravens play disciplined on defense and eat Kap alive.

Ravens win a yawner.

Ross also made an attempt at hiring Jim Harbaugh as well...and he gets a chance to coach in the last game of the season.

I believe the man truly wants to rebuild this franchise. Hopefuly this group will get it done.

Ross/Ireland have alieanated fans, media, and many FA's.

Kris, nice to have opposing views. And given my age now I appreciate someone stickign up for the vets, haha. But there are a lot of hungry lions in the NFC. Eli, RG3, Matt Ryan, Kaepernick, Newton, even Russel Wilson. Don't know how much of an edge NO will have over those guys considering the repsective supporting casts. And this year, wven with Sean Payton offering three wins, they are still a ten win team and barely a playoff team at that and would most likely be relegated to wild card weekend fodder for someone like they've been the last two years.

You're making a good argument and the "Peyton Factor" will right the ship.

On the flip side, Brees is battling the worst enemy known to man. Old Age.

I agree that the Saints will be a tough team in 2013. But it takes alot to make the Super Bowl and Brees opportunities are becoming very limited.

I would vote against them winning another one anytime soon. But that's just me.

Well i suck at predictions but I believe both teams are pretty evenly matched so it will be all about motivation and momentum.

Which means I have to with Ray Lewis getting his boys fired up for his final game.

I don't know how anyone can pick between these two. Although before the playoffs, I would've told you the niners were a better team. However, the Ravens like the Titans (music city miracle) and Pats (tuck rule) look to be one of those teams that can do no wrong.

Good point Rick.

When you have two evenly matched teams, it almost always comes down to mistakes. So, in conjunction with the Ray Lewis factor, I'm betting that Flacco makes fewer mistakes than Kap.

(Then again, this could be a strange one. With the "Brother against Brother Factor, who knows-lol)

It just seems to me like the Ravens put it together and got on a Roll at just the right time.

They played well all season, but as of late, I thought they really started playing tight. Add in the Ray Lewis retirement tour and I think they get that emotional/motivational edge.

I like the Niners and don't want to knock them. But I think Jimmy's QB change is going to come back and bite him in the A ss on this one. Facing Lewis and the Vaunted Ravens Defense........On the Big Stage........I think it will all get away from Kap. I think it'll all be to much for the Kid. He'll buckle.

After just reading Omar Kelly's aricle on the sunsentinel I'm a little perplexed.

He's basically saying the Dophins are focusing on upgrading their offense at the risk of resigning their own fa's.

He says they are going to spend 40-50 milion on a reciever but are unlikely to resign Harltine.

Which makes me wonder how exciting would either jennings, bowe,or wallace be along with Bess and 2 rookies??? Oh and of course marlon moore, binn and the usual cast of acorns.

Omar knows nothing. Armando has the pulse of the team.

Trade Marshall for Eggnew and then spend 50 mill on a receiver.....thats probably not as good as Marshall? Hilarious!!!

I don't put much stock in Omar. He's extremely biased and **ALWAYS** working an agenda.

As far as Hartline goes, I would do all I could to get him signed to a reasonable contract.

He has developed some great chemistry with Tannehill and that's the type of thing we need to exploit. When we do get our "Go To" WR in FA and/or the draft, things will open up even MORE for Tannehill and his Security Blanket Hartline.

Thats basically what I was trying to say Odin.

I would feel much better with one of the big fa's and then Hartline, Bess, and a rookie battleing for the other spots.

Tannehill's developed "GREAT CHEMISTRY" with Hartline?

Hartline didnt start playing until the season begin. So really, how great is that chemistry that Tannehill couldnt develop the same having an entire training camp with him?

Geesh, the things flung around here is like flying gorilla s h i t. LOL....

Yeah, Tannehill and Hartline had a grand total of 1 td worth of chemistry in 2012.

We should really "exploit that". Maybe in 2013 they'll combine for a grand total of 2 tds. That's 100% increase in td production.

Odi-assi, I think youre really onto something kid. LOL...

It is true. The S class this year is hot-hot. Forget Byrd.

Before we start talking of great Tannehill/Hartline chemistry. Can we at least have seen 7 recieving tds between the two?

Dont know what universe some guys watch the Dolphins from. But "in the known universe", name one nfl dc that Hartline would even mildly scare operating as a #1 or #2 wr?

Please remind me not to hold my breath because I fear I wont be getting a legit answer anytime soon.

Im sure thew Pats, Bills, and Jets would absolutely love to see us resign Hartline. It would make their preparation week a lot easier when facing the Dolphins.

I would only like to see Hartline resigned only if "dirt cheap" or we just have absolutely "no other" recourse. LOL...

Hartline's only td of the season was the 200yd recueving game. I just can not for the life of me understand why so many can fall in love with a wr who has only 6 td catches in his 4yr career.

If Hartline were were a fa from another team, would you be so hot after getting him signed then? God help if you do. LOL...

Tannehill will become a god of football the kid can do it all so just sit back and enjoy

Have you forgotten Hartline's only the best wr on arguably the league's worst wr corps? LOL....

I promise, I would shed not a single tear if Hartline ends up having to walk. LOL...

Man just watch what philbin has up his sleeve this off season

The Dolphins logo change has ALREADY happened, folks. Done. There are simply delaying unveiling it because of licensing agreements, getting merchandise ready, and wanting to maximize attention around the draft.

You people that seem to think Ross or whoever is spending countless hours working on this while somehow neglecting the team itself are clueless in the EXTREME.

It give me a woody thinking of our new offense with new explosive weapons

We are like a virgin shiny and new

Too many times too many games(2012) Ive heard announcers say; "Not a single Dolphin reciever got separation".

Wasnt Hartline out in pattern too? Yet some here treat Hartline potentially leaving as if you would be breaking up with a girfriend.

Some of the same of you that question if Te'o is gay. LOL....

Coach joe is a genius

Is hartline gay also

Tannehill already IS a god of football..........to the Ireland Fanboyz on this blog.
Not so much anywhere else.
Average at best. Mediocre most of the time.

Another failed Fin experiment.

Career backup w/in three years.
As a medical professional I can make this prognosis.

Posted by: Nj | February 01, 2013 at 06:29 PM

Couldt say if Hartline is gay, but, some here hating to see him walk could possibly be. Even if they dont know it yet. LOL...

No one on our offense is worth keeping except tannehill and a few others

Man, that S from UF is some kinda killer. If he can't hit the opponent, he'll hit a teammate. A la Pollard.
