Dolphins talk contract with Bush's representation

It's been an on-going drama (among fans) this offseason whether the Dolphins want running back Reggie Bush back or not. And part of the narrative is that the team has not shown Bush any love because they didn't offer the former Heisman Trophy winner a contract during the season or even in the weeks after the season.

Guess what?

In the last week the Dolphins and Bush's agent Joel Segal discussed a deal for Bush.

So there is interest by the Dolphins to retain Bush.

But how intense is that interest?

As I have reported and is apparently confirmed by Miami's approach, the Dolphins have a price set for Bush. The team wants Bush. But the Dolphins want Bush at their price.

What does that mean?

It means the Dolphins are comfortable with the idea of having Lamar Miller take the reins as the lead back. Bush, according to general manager Jeff Ireland, is seemingly more suited to a third-down spot or some role slotted as a receiver.

"You’d love to have his skill set on the football team," Ireland said. "I mean Reggie has a unique set of skill sets.  He’s been a receiver, he’s been a primary running back.  So I definitely see a role for that type of skill set."

How Bush would be used exactly is a coaching question. Whether he'll be available to be used is a personnel question and on that front the personnel department's price point for Bush doesn't seem to quite rise to the $5 million per year Bush has been averaging the past couple of seasons -- not when he's not certain of being the lead back.

Bush, meanwhile, obviously wants a raise.

So where does that leave everyone?

Well, the Dolphins are interested in Bush. To a degree. His representation is interested in getting Bush back to Miami -- but only if the price is right for them.

Seems they have more talking to do or will need the market to help set parameters for Bush's next deal.

Open Communication is the only way to reach an Understanding.

I'm the farthest removed from being a Negotiator, Armando. But, from what I have learned on TV and other great places, you kind of open the bargaining at less say 6-7 mill in Bush's case, then try to work down from it, don't you agree? Let me know in your TGIF entry.

I've been saying it for weeks now...They need to re-sign Bush...He's got great work ethic, he brings a lot of leadership on a young team...He's still a weapon on offense, and God knows we don't have many of those...I would bring him back at the right price, I would also bring back Hartline and Starks...I know a lot of people don't mind getting rid of Starks but not me...I'm a big Starks fan...As a matter a fact, he's the best free agent pickup we had in the last 5 years...Not counting Wake of course...I love to see Starks and Soliai in the middle of our "D"...

How are your parakeets, Armando? Be sure and let me know.

Even Ireland is wary of that 3 day window between March 9 and 12 that supposedly lets the FAs "test the market". Even if it is true, so many things can go wrong that couldn't let you contermatch another offer in Time it's unbelievable.

Bush is the only playmaker on the roster, the face of the franchise, and is a must sign.

Bush was missing half the season without an injury. No one cares about who is the face of a franchise that doesn't win games. He was great in a couple games but mostly not a factor. He is a progress stopper and a fumbler.

Keep up the good work Ireland, this will get him brownie points from his team for at least showing interest, even if Bush goes somewhere else.

I read somewhere (either here or the SS) that the Dolphins will keep one or the other (Bush or Hartline). Ireland is will to pay one of them (pretty much the same rate). So the question becomes, who would you rather have? Personally, I'd rather have Bush. He scores more TDs, and can be used out of the backfield as a receiver creating better mismatches. That means we must sign 1 of the top 3 WRs, maybe even add a 2nd lower-tier FA WR PLUS draft a WR. That should give Tannehill some fresh, new blood to work with. Add a TE via draft and now we may have something offensively.

But keeping all these same guys who can't win more than 7 games is pointless. Change it up.

progress stopper? For who? Daniel Thomas?? The guy sucks...Bush was a 1000 yard rusher...And could of been again if he wouldn't of got injured...If this front office can finally add some speed to this offense, you watch what Bush will do...

There is great Communication among ALL GMs in the League and among their Collective endeavors depend their survival. If you believe in those last minute calls, Miami has traded their ? pick to ? to select first, then either you're very naive or a plain dumbassss.

Now I'm a couch GM HeadCoach and Coordinator of the Dolphins like every true phin phan on this website. Bush is a very good piece to our team he can catch run routes juke everyone. Our team has an issue with WR and YAC for WR so why don't they just let him start at WR I think he'd be a beast because he's too big for most DB's an fast enough to get by them. Plus he'd be cheaper at that position due to his "inexperience" at WR.

Be on your toes, Paul.

I'd have him about at $3-$4 million. RB's are a commodity these days and there are lots on the market.

But he can make plays and the Fish need continuity on offense - so that means Hartline must be re-signed as well.

Everyone is HOPING that Ireland will obtain 2-3 playmakers either thru FA or the draft or both. Expecting him to do that PLUS replace some existing starters from last year is far beyond his capability. This team can not afford to lose ANY starters.

. We have the cap space to at least bring back ALL our starters and to add playmakers in FA.

Bush is a progress stopper??? TOO FUNNY!! Sounds like a Jet fan!!

DC, I agree with you to a certain extent...But you can't get rid of ALL the players, how many holes would that create??? I believe as a team you have to keep the positives and get rid of the negatives...Starks has been solid every year, why not keep him? He's not the reason why we're losing...Keep Hartline because he had great chemistry with our young QB, so that will only get better with time..Bush has great work ethic, is a real leader on a young team and also gives great effort every game...He's still a playmaker and we should keep those...As for the rest, I agree...None of them are worth keeping as far as I'm concerned...

Anyway, time to go to work...I'm out.

Yeah, if you let a bunch of players walk... Irescum couldnt replace them in 20 years!

"Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities "heard" at the Combine that free agent Greg Jennings is seeking $14 million a year.
$14 million annually would make Jennings the NFL's third highest paid wide receiver behind Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. No one is going to pay that much for an injury-prone wideout entering his age-30 season. Per Pelissero, there is a "popular theory" among NFL front offices that wide receivers will "sit on the market" like inside linebackers did last year. In other words, they may price themselves out of the initial wave of free agency."

Holy sh$t...Has Jennings lost his damn mind??? $8 Million a year tops & that's a LOT for a guy about to turn 30 who has been banged up the last two years. Hartline is looking like a freaking bargain!!!

Not interested in Jennings at $14mil a year.....not even CLOSE. I don't believe there's a team out there that will give him that. See ya.....NEXT!

He's a playmaker. He wins games for you. I don't understand why the Dolphins will pay a brinks truck for a playmaking WR but not for Bush at about half the price?

Bush can get you 20 or 30 yards at a time just like a WR (catching or running). I don't get the frugal approach with Bush. He is a difference maker in a league where difference makers win games.

WNP,

I dont know if I buy Tom Pelissero. 14 million is ridiculous. Jennings is not an idiot and know no one will pay him that. I maybe could see Wallace hold out for that, but hell I think he will jump at the first to offer 11-12 million. Just my thoughts

Montreal, I was only talking about WRs. As far as everyone else, I agree with keeping Starks (I would franchise him). Long I'd offer an incentive, backloaded contract to and if he walks so be it. Clemons they sound like they will keep to give some veteran continuity to the secondary. That means they let Smith walk, and probably also Patterson. For whatever reason, they sound like they want to keep the hunchback (Marshall), and will draft a CB (probably).

I'm just saying I read they will only keep 1 out of the 2 (maybe they keep both Bush/Hartline). I'd rather see a bigger change to the offense, so I really only want 1 (let's see some different chemistry around here).

I'd rather have Brian Hartline right now than Jennings. Huge difference in age at a position where youth and speed make all the difference.

I would actually pay Brian Hartline more than Jennings at this point.

Craig,

They were talking about the FA WRs on the radio up here. One guy says, "sounds like Wallace is going to Miami, they really want him down there."

So I don't think it's a secret that we are heavily pursuing Wallace (for better or for worse).

So there is interest by the Dolphins to retain Bush.

Mando,

There's interest by the Dolphins to sign ALL of our FA's. There's interest in Bush, Smith, Long, Hartline, Starks, etc. It comes down to price.

I just wish Ireland would put Long & Smith in our rear view & move on. Regardless of the cost I don't want either player. They're both EXTREMELY overrated & we can do better.

Tannehill will be running for his life if we lose Big Jake....

Drew R on QAM now saying Ireland reminds him alot of Parcells............and he means it as a compliment!?!?!!

Whadda Putz!

"I dont know if I buy Tom Pelissero. 14 million is ridiculous. Jennings is not an idiot and know no one will pay him that. I maybe could see Wallace hold out for that, but hell I think he will jump at the first to offer 11-12 million. Just my thoughts"

Rdubs,

Perhaps. It was just SHOCKING to see that number attached to Jennings name.

I'd say that's about right for Flacco not Jennings. There's no way I'd pay Flacco more than $15 Million a year. The idea that he's looking for $20 Million is ludicrous. He's a good QB who plays on a very good team.

I think Bush would be a nice fit for the Chargers.

Good interview with Jeff Ireland on PFT from yesterday. I just don't get the hate for this guy. He's smart, his answers are well thought out and he doesn't reveal anything (loose lips sink ships). Sounds like he has a plan and he's going to stick to it. What is that plan? No clue. But he's got a process and Philbin is very much a part of it. Can't think of anybody else out there who's avaialble who'd sound better in interviews. Now he has to make it happen.

Florio: 'What's at the top of your list to get better this year?'

Ireland: 'We need to score more points and we need to have more turnover on defence.'

This should be music to all Dolfans ears.

I think the Packers would love to have Reggie Bush.

Craig, what we really need is A NEW GM!

WNPs,

The Ravens are going to franchise Flacco if they can't get a long term deal done. It'll be $14mil and change but that still allows teams to sign him and give up two first round picks. They can choose to 'exclusively' tag him for $20 mil, where no one else can even talk to him (The Saints went this way with Brees). I think either $14 or $20 mil is ridiculous for the Flacco. It's going to really hurt the Ravens ability to keep some of their own FAs. They're on the slide, I'm afraid. Just read this morning that their C Matt Birk is retiring too, so there's another hole to fill.

That SOB Ross is a cheapskate owner. He wont pay for star players, yet he’s begging the taxpayers for handouts for his business. AND HE”S WORTH 4.4 BILLION!!!!!!!!!!!

Craig,

We need to score more points & we need to have more turnovers on defense??? He must be some kind of genius...What is he going to do to fix that b/c drafting guys like Thomas, Egnew, & Clay clearly hasn't worked.

It's actually sad that Ireland & his staff work so hard only to produce such dismal results.

We should offer Flacco 20 mill and jumpstart this team.

Craig, what we really need is A NEW GM!

TGH,

Not happening. Barring a complete collapse or sale of the team Ireland is the GM for life in Miami. Sounds crazy right??? That's b/c it is but true nonetheless.

II have always been a big fan of Bush!

BUSH A WIDE RECEIVER, DUMB....

save the money for what? Christmas?

we need legit strech the field threat at WR, maybe even 2 of them. and TE

Craig,

I wouldn't worry about the Ravens. They know how to draft & they also know when to let players walk. Yes they'll wind up paying Flacco & they probably take a step back in 2013 but it won't be long before they're back in contention.

WNP, when you have the Dennis the Menace touch like Irescum does.....it doesnt matter how hard you work. LOL. Everything he does is WRONG.

we need legit strech the field threat at WR, maybe even 2 of them. and TE

Wally,

Absolutely. Unfortunately other teams can find these things while Ireland continues to miss.

Yes I listened to the interview but the most important thing was the contingency plans, that he of course did not elaborate on. Which indicates what direction the Dolphins will go in the draft depends on for example Jake Long. If they can not sign him the Dolphins could go OT in the first round. What is done with Sean Smith etc...in my view the Dolphins need two CB's.

WNPs,

Yeah we'll see on the Ravens. Al I know is no team is going to be hit as hard this offseason as the Ravens. Let's see how good their are next year. I believe McKinney is a FA also, so they have a decision to make on their LT and they're going to have a lot of holes to fill, as well as reason both TEs (restricted). No question Ozzie's and his staff are the best in the business but it's going to be a bit of an uphill climb. $20 mil for Flacco is suicide IMO.

I think Bush could play the Wes Welker role to perfection.

Dolphin Rick made a good point on the blog last night, its simple yet I never gave it much thought till last night. This is Irelands first job as GM, which is a very complex job and there is a learning curve and we dont take that into account as much as we should. i think GM of an NFL is probably a thousand times harder than we think it is and on top of it, he got saddled with an idiot for a coach, god I hated hearing him talk. Every other word was followed by a "ya know?" or sentence filling nothingness.

I think last years draft shows Ireland is evolving and has a good partner in Philbin. I know people think he is to uptight. I enjoyed watching him give the team crap for not keeping their locker room clean or picking trash off the field, its all in the deatils and sets an example. If anyone has managed a resteraunt or something similar, knows that the small details make all the difference, which will benefit the Dolphins in the long haul.

And to all calling Ross cheap, eat a dique!! Thats just stupid nonsense and a waste of everyones time and brain cells...

jesus craig, your idiocy never ceases to exist!

what's the alternative? not franchise flacco & risk losing him? or tag him, have your QB & rebuild the roster?

Unlike Ireland, Ozzie Newsome knows what he's doing & will have the Ravens in contention in a year or two.

THEY ARE SUPERBOWL CHAMPS & BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS THE LAST 4-5 YEARS IN A ROW!

Superbowl Champs ALWAYS have cap issues because many teams want Superbowl champ FA's on their roster!

Unlike Miami, Baltimore doesn't have to spend on Free Agents because they can draft & develop their own guys.

Get your head outtyer as* & use that thing you call a brain!

How is 28 young and 29 is old? i don't get that.

they are saying that Derrell revis is young and in his prime at 28 but Jennings is old at 29?

Craig M = Dumbest blogger on here

Yeah, in 20 years Ireland could become a decent GM....

WNP, when you have the Dennis the Menace touch like Irescum does.....it doesnt matter how hard you work. LOL. Everything he does is WRONG.

Just Saying,

I agree. As a GM he has sucked & unfortunately I expect more of the same in FA & the draft.

He's going to piss away a nice chunk of change on Long. At the end of the day I see him caving. Mark my words on this. Ireland will think he's getting Long at a 'fair price' for a top LT however Long is no longer close to being a top LT. Think Jake Grove...

Promichael,

AT LEAST two. Marshall & Patterson are both coming off injury & Nolan Carroll & RJ Stanford are terrible.

Hey 'u idot',

What is everything a fight with you? Where is it written that we all have to agree on everything and think the same way? We're here for discussion bud and it's fine to have different opinions on things. It's the way of the world. Why is someone an 'idiot' when they don't agree with the masses? DO you realize just how STUPID that is? What's with you man? I've been able to think for myself for 45 years and I don't need you to come along and tel me how to think. If it was me, I'd only tag Flacco at the $14 mil mark and if someone wants to offer me two firsts for him then great....I start over. Their roster needs a bit of a make-over and it's time to get younger and better again and plug some of the holes. Ozzie's a smart guy and I think this is the way he'll go. I don't believe he'll open the chequebook and pay Flacco $100mil+.

So hold up the mirror. Hey it's YOU.....'u idiot'.

WNPs,

How is Patterson coming off an injury? What injury?

"what's the alternative? not franchise flacco & risk losing him? or tag him, have your QB & rebuild the roster?

U Idiot,

All very good points. They have to keep Flacco no matter what. He's a good QB & he's still young.

Apparently they don't have problems finding WR's, TE's, RB's, & CB's in the DRAFT like we do. Why is that??? Teams like us continue to say that we need to 'build through the draft' but you have to KNOW how to draft well to do that right???

craig talks allot, no one cares about your opinions jackhole.

u idiot,

Well obviously you do because you take the time to read them and then comment on them.

Hmmm....interesting.

"WNPs,

How is Patterson coming off an injury? What injury?"

Craig,

He limped off the field in the NE game. Ankle injury.
