Dolphins talk contract with Bush's representation

It's been an on-going drama (among fans) this offseason whether the Dolphins want running back Reggie Bush back or not. And part of the narrative is that the team has not shown Bush any love because they didn't offer the former Heisman Trophy winner a contract during the season or even in the weeks after the season.

Guess what?

In the last week the Dolphins and Bush's agent Joel Segal discussed a deal for Bush.

So there is interest by the Dolphins to retain Bush.

But how intense is that interest?

As I have reported and is apparently confirmed by Miami's approach, the Dolphins have a price set for Bush. The team wants Bush. But the Dolphins want Bush at their price.

What does that mean?

It means the Dolphins are comfortable with the idea of having Lamar Miller take the reins as the lead back. Bush, according to general manager Jeff Ireland, is seemingly more suited to a third-down spot or some role slotted as a receiver.

"You’d love to have his skill set on the football team," Ireland said. "I mean Reggie has a unique set of skill sets.  He’s been a receiver, he’s been a primary running back.  So I definitely see a role for that type of skill set."

How Bush would be used exactly is a coaching question. Whether he'll be available to be used is a personnel question and on that front the personnel department's price point for Bush doesn't seem to quite rise to the $5 million per year Bush has been averaging the past couple of seasons -- not when he's not certain of being the lead back.

Bush, meanwhile, obviously wants a raise.

So where does that leave everyone?

Well, the Dolphins are interested in Bush. To a degree. His representation is interested in getting Bush back to Miami -- but only if the price is right for them.

Seems they have more talking to do or will need the market to help set parameters for Bush's next deal.

Craig M, you make a valid point but when you start rebuilding you start with the Offensive line. We have been rebuilding forever. By now u would hope the Offensive line would be set and we wouldn't have to draft these guys

Clyde Gates was a speedster. WOW

Posted by: Harmel | February 24, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Now that post actually makes sense but I'm guessing you think that Ross drafted him.

Where is Marcus Wheaton?

bobby,

I'm not advocating that we draft linemen. I'm just saying, if it's about 'pitch and catch' to win in the NFL, how come there's so many linemen projected to go in the top ten?

By the way (and it's all specualtion right now) but most of the mocks I've seen have 8 of the top 10 picks as linemen.

Bush is Tannehill's safety valve and the only playmaker on the roster.

Dolfan Rick,

Harmel thinks that Ross was too cheap to pay Gates, that's why he's not here any more. Same note, different day with this guy.

Rick, Ireland drafted Clyde Gates. Duuuhhh!

Irescum has blazed new territory for most busts ever by a GM.

If the Dolphins are in fact moving on from Bush then I'm kind of torn on this one. On the one hand I have no confidence that the other two guys can get it done but on the other hand I'm please that Ireland isn't just throwing money around to bring back the same cast of characters. I like Bush and I've always said I'd be in favour of bringing him back, but at OUR price. If he does move on, I've always felt that SD would be his next stop. Kind of looking that way to me.

Yea but these guys running are name brand guys top prospects , big difference

Ross is a cheap SOB that will never ever produce a winner on the field. Its not his goal.

More imortant than Time, watch them run the patterns and catch the ball. As of right now, I would only go for DeAndre Hopkins and Bailey.

Shula
You can't hit on all your picks our hit to miss ratio is average

It looks like there is plenty of speed and production at WR. We can get our guy there in the 2nd Rd. the big question is what do we do at 12? I like Lane Johnson. He is an athletic freak at LT.

Why would you own a team and plan not to win , that's obsurd

Bush a Safety valve? Have you seen his game logs for this year? If anyone it would be Hartline.

Wayne screwed up this team , get your facts straight

I wouldn't mind picking one of those giant DEs at #12.

If we picked a tackle at 12 the natives would shrink Ireland's head

I think Ross has kept Ireland because Ireland allows Ross to meddle as much as he likes. Ross is like a Jerry Jones just not in your face as much. Its well publicized that Ross drafted Tannehill. And I suspect it goes a lot further then that. While Ireland sits by and says "YES SIR" to every Ross whim.

I think I would take a pass rusher or trade back for a corner

If Cordarelle does well today running and catching, he might be the #1 WR selected.

Wee that was our best pick in 20 years maybe Ross should make all the picks

He ran a 4.37 oscar

Vegas Mike,

Do you work for the National Enquirer? Where do you get you 'facts' from? There's not one ounce of FACT in your post....pure conjecture.

If we don't get one of the big fa wr's Corradelle Patterson does look like a viable option at 12.

Cheap Ross spends a lot more time on the logo, celebrities, hard knocks, honoring opponents to sell tickets, and the stadium, instead of building a winner.

Sherman and philbin have a lot to do with selecting players they are both great evaluators

Dude the stadium is empty we must win

Craig, this is a place for opinion last time I checked.

LOL, maybe but it makes the most sense because our O-line doesn't fit with our zone blocking scheme. While Johnson may not be as good as Jake Long in a man scheme, he is better and cheaper than Long for a zone.

Goodbye Brian Hartline!

Goodbye Mike Wallace!!

#12 Miami Dolphins! C.Patterson!!

2nd Rd Pick! T.Austin!!

3rd Rd Pick D.Robinson!

Oh, And #1 Overall! Geno Smith! A Better Qb Than Flacco!!

Just Saying!

Vegas Mike,

I have no problem with OPINION.....until you try and pass it off as FACT. It's not.

Receivers are bountifull hip hip hooray

Craig, only Steve Ross knows for a fact the reason he's kept Ireland. I'm just giving my opinion.

Dashi,

I you sure Austin makes it out of rd 1? And what about Jennings?

Dashi we are gonna rock the draft dude change our name to the miami touchdowns

*** Daily Poll ^^^

Given a choice, would you rather:

1. Be stranded on a desert island with Craig M.
2. Be thrown into a deep pool of acid wearing lead boots

Results will be tallied at the end of the day.

The O-line In The Draft Suck!

Resign Jake!

Womack Is A Bust!

The Tackles In This Draft Aren't Even Stronger Than J.Martin!

Get The Fastest Guard! Develop Him! Draft Him With a 3rd Pick!

Actually Vegas Mike, you didn't. You tried to pass it off as FACT. The National Enquirer does that too.

Can you send me the links where it's been 'well publicized that Ross drafted Tannehill'. I'll wait while you look them up.

The REALITY is we have NO proof that Ross is involved in ANY personnel decisions. NONE. Much more likely that the decision was made by Philbin and Ireland, with strong input from his HC in College, Sherman. I have a funny feeling those guys would know a lot more about it than Ross. Agreed?

Ross probably kept Ireland because he's under contract and Ross is too cheap to pay 2 GM's.

SWOOPE ran a 4.4 'mmm hartline s replacement

Looks like the 'freak' is back. Nothing else to do pal?

Interesting that you spend so much time focussing on 'poles'. Weird actually.

Well my choice selection would be #2.

Craig M and Vegas,

My opinion for what it's worth is that Ross was advised to retain Ireland because he was the best option at the time.

Believe or not, top GMs don't grow on palm trees.

I think John Jerry can play tackle , on the left side and draft a couple of lineman in the middle rounds

Dolfan Rick,

Of course that's what happened. He was getting input from Petersson and Parcells. Now whether that was the right decision or not remains to be seen. We'll find out soon enough.

Craig, Ross picked Tannehill. That is common knowledge.

With The First 2nd Round Pick.

Agreed. Doubt T.Austin Makes It Out Of The 1st!

He Looks A lot Better Than S.Bailey!!

Anyone see where Odrick is expected to lose 20 lbs next year to stay at DE?
That tells me either we are keeping Starks or picking DT early in this draft. My guess is Starks gets tagged.

I do not want jake long back he is a progress stopper .the only keepers are Starks,Clemmons,Fasano, and maybe hartline, then we can add players we need and pay a pemium

I'd select #2.

The only thing Ross picked was his nose

I'll wait for your links Vegas....doubt I'll ever set them.

Marc, I would be happy if Jerry can come into preseason under 350lbs. His work ethic isn't good enough to play Tackle. Will Yeatman has a better chance of starting IMO.

Woodshed,

I saw where Odrick said he would lose 20 lbs IF he doesn't get moved inside.
