« Dolphins history with free agency? Not great | Main | NFL Combine this week -- the invitees (with video) »

Live blog chat here at 2 p.m.

There's plenty to talk about the Dolphins as they prepare for the Combine next week.

So this is a good time for a live chat.

I'll be here at 2 p.m. and if you are here, we can discuss the team. If you cannot be here then, leave your questions or comments now and I'll address them. You can check back later to see my response to your comment.

Topics on the table:

All free agency -- Miami's own and those about to be cut loose by other teams.

The draft. Who fits. Who doesn't. Miami's needs.

Anything else that comes to your mind.

Before anyone asks: The team has said the new logo will be unveiled in April. So that's out of the way.

Craig,

Let me be more clear since you didn't get it the first time.

It is a total waste of time discussing anything with you. I have nothing more to say to you.

So Bonfa,

Instead of asking questions and lecturing others, explain to us how you came up with the idea that 'Wallace is average' and tell me how you came to the conclusion that 'Baltimore dominated their opponents in the playoffs, with Lewis having little or no impact'.

I don't want to 'put words in your mouth or be rude', so help me understand what you are saying.

promichael

You approach me like you are from some high lofty perch above everyone else, when you are not. Try to treat people with dignity and not as though they are beneath you if you want to actually have a conversation.

If everyone just ignores Craig M for MORON, he'll eventually leave. The guy is just a dope and fights with everyone. Not to mention he's football clueless also...

OK bud....I thought by 'your words' that's what this blog was for. After all, didn't you say it was here so that other people could discuss their difference of opinions. You changing your mind on that too?

Xerxes??,

Is that like Herpes? You know there's medication for that, right? Good like with it. Cool name!

promichael,

Why would you even want the opinion of someone you believe is dead wrong, naive, and confused?

None of us know jackshitt, and only those that think they do are dead wrong, naive, and confused.

Bonfa,

I as Craig M suggests would like to know how you came up with your conclusion. 'Wallace is an average receiver'. Let's give you a chance to explain that your not naive.

Craig M for MORON,

Stick to ice fishin and bowling like your fellow canadiens. You clearly dont know football!! lol

The Ravens Aren't On The Downside!! They Are DONE!!!

Flacco Will Be Exposed As A Fraud!! And Expect Defenses To Go Extra Hard On Him!! For His Dirty Comment!! At The End Of The Superbowl!!

Wallace playing with TanneBust would be below average. Big Ben makes everyone look better.

Bonfa,

When TV analysts rant about Ray Lewis it's for public consumption. I saw Ray getting beat in coverage. He was there to make some hard takles but he is retiring because often enough Ray is there after the 1st down is picked up.

micheal,

First, I've explained it already, try reading what was already written.

Secondly, I don't like your demeanor or your disrespectful, haughty attitude and therefore have no interest in explaining anything to you. You are a pompous joke of a person.

The Ravens will be BETTER next year.....as long as they keep Flacco. Ray Lewis was not very productive last season. And Harbaugh is the new Bellichick.

Bonfa,

Why would you even want the opinion of someone you believe is dead wrong, naive, and confused?
=====================================================
Bonfa,

You are naive! You really believed I wanted your opinion.

You now know why my site name is promichael, having nothing to do with the NFL but the tennis profession. You drew conclusions that are typical of a naive person.

Wow, it really is amazing how poor the reading and comprehension skills of most people have gotten.

I had already mentioned Ray Lewis is well beyond his prime therefore the Ravens will be better with his replacement, not downsliding because he is gone. Now this guy who keeps asking me to explain myself comes back to tell me what I already explained, that Lewis is not the same player.

Talk about futility. Unreal.

micheal,

I didn't expect that you were this childish. You are a perfect match for that other guy.

I drew no conclusions, other than your need to boost your ego on a blog by proceeding your name with pro. You just couldn't wait to tell us about your tennis profession. Who cares, nobody is impressed.

You have no idea who you are talking to, it is you that draws conclusions. I'm an engineer in the high tech field and have traveled all over the world for the past 15 years. I've lived in 4 different countries and speak two foreign languages. You can call me all kinds of things, but confused and naive I am not.

I know enough to realize I am an expert in nothing, not even football. You haven't got there yet, and probably never will.

To the rest of the bloggers...

Forgive my part in the ongoing diatribe. It wasn't my intention. The fins are the only team in any sport I follow. I try back another time, for now...I'm out.

Finding the right weapons at WR is only 1/2 the battle. The sad truth many don't care to discuss is Tannehill hasn't proven to be very accurate with the long ball. Hartline was open at least 5 times for a long pass, and the ball was either over or underthrown. I'm not saying Tannehill (with limited experience) can't improve on that throw. But that's not a pass tried many times a game, and if you watched the Steelers, Big Ben hit those passes more than he missed.

I'm pretty confident Wallace can blow the top off defenses. I'm less confident in Tannehill's ability to deliver an accurate pass (because he hasn't shown that ability as much).

By the way, SS has an article showing how Miami spent twice as much on defense as offense in 2012. The belief of that writer is they will use FA to bring in (more expensive) offensive weapons and the draft for defense (to put the spending more in balance). Interesting hypothesis, and maybe gives credence to the belief that we'll grab a WR, maybe TE and OT/Guard in FA.

"The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggests that the Steelers may not tender restricted free agent Jonathan Dwyer.

If Dwyer failed to receive a tender, he'd become an unrestricted free agent. The Steelers view neither Dwyer nor fellow RFA Isaac Redman as viable starters, so the thinking here is that they wouldn't want to commit $2.7 million to two backup running backs. Redman is expected to be tendered and return as a third-down back. Dwyer, 23, may be allowed to move on.
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette."

Even though the Steelers have cap issues I find this hard to believe since they're not re-signing Mendenhall BUT I can't think of too many guys that would be a better fit to go with Miller. Yes Steven Jackson would probably be awesome BUT he's going to cost WAY too much money & he's about to turn 30. So that's a short-term solution.

Eddie Lacey makes even more sense since he's younger, cheaper, & he came into his own in the latter part of Alabama's seasons. However, I believe he'll be gone before we pick in the 2nd round. In fact I could easily see the Steelers drafting Lacey in the first round to go with Isaac Redman if they let Dwyer walk.

Dwyer is still VERY young (going to be 24 in July) & he's a LOAD at 5'11"/230 to bring down. What impresses me most about him is that he has quick feet for a big back & he seems to enjoy contact. He can easily be the hammer that we hoped Thomas would be. Use Dwyer to wear the defenses out & then we have Miller to slice them up. Plus Dwyer wouldn't cost a lot so it could be beautiful...

Guys Since we don't know if Tannehill is the real deal yet since the jury is still out on him we should take a QB in the later rounds someone like Landry Jones or Ryan Nassib from Syracuse. My philosophy is take a QB each year till you get the right one. Not sure about Tannehill yet!!!

DC Dolfan says

I'm pretty confident Wallace can blow the top off defenses. I'm less confident in Tannehill's ability to deliver an accurate pass (because he hasn't shown that ability as much).
=======================================================
I agree with your opinion, which is why I advocate trying to keep QB Matt Moore.

WNP, if you read between the lines (actually, it's been pretty well reported) the staff feels they are already loaded at RB with Miller, Thomas, Thigpen and Jonas Gray (and I think there's another guy in there). As the RB position is dwindling in importance, and taking into account all the other areas of need which are a greater priority, don't be surprised if nothing happens at RB this year (besides Bush walking in FA). That's the writing on the wall.

promichael, I'm actually with you there. I don't think Devlin is a quality-enough backup, and we've seen teams need 2 QBs to get through a Season. If I'm the team, I sweeten the pot to try to entice Moore to stay (though the word is Norv loves him and wants him in Cleveland).

On the Tannehill thing, this is what Philbin was brought in to do, DEVELOP players. And he's had success with QBs. Tannehill has all the tools, and enough talent to be good in this league. So we'll see if Philbin is any better than the last 4 HCs at building their talent from within.

..DC..I totaly disagree..I think that the team will 1 either go after a free agent at running back, or 2 if they don't thorugh free agency..draft a guy.

I know that it is easy to say that we are fine at running back. That there is no way Ireland could use another pick on a running back with all the "holes"this team needs filled.

The difference with running back is that you can use a later round pick say 4-7 on a guy and have a realistic expectation he can contribute right away. So using a pick in said rounds on a guy that say is a guard, or a corner..They may end up being fine players. But if you are looking to fill an immediete "hole" it probably isn't happening.

I'm not saying that every running back taken later in the draft is going to be automatic. I'm just saying that if you are trying to find players to fill holes throught the draft...After the first 2 rounds it is a crapshoot..And the best odds are at running back.

DD, I agree with that draft strategy. What I'm saying is the team (Ireland/Coaching staff) has intimated that they are stocked at that position. You (and others) may not feel that way, but if you listen to reports, you'll hear the team saying that.

But ultimately you may be right. If they use FA and earlier draft rounds to fill holes, maybe they get a RB later.

From what I'm hearing though, the team has high hopes on Gray (a guy many of us wouldn't know from a can of paint).

If I'm the team, I sweeten the pot to try to entice Moore to stay (though the word is Norv loves him and wants him in Cleveland).
====================================================
That sounds good because Cleveland is not a popular landing spot for anyone. Moore throws a good deep ball. His arm is not as strong as Tannehills but in the event that Tannehill is not that guy or injury; it would be wise to save some money to keep Matt Moore. A forgotten player who would become important if there was an injury to Tannehill. The problem of a QB comes back into focus. When you think about it Moore was the 12th rated passer without a right tackle, had a new offense to learn and did not loose the job on the regular season playing field.

Matt Moore wants a chance to at least compete to start. Don't see it happening here. Of course I don't see it happening anywhere else either. Then again Jax gave Henne a pretty decent contract. You never know.

As far as Tanny on the long ball. Give him time to get some rhythm with someone. A reciever who goes and gets a few won't hurt either.

Devilin is super accurate. Keep him over Moore.

I think that would be a mistake. Miller did not have enough carries to demonstrate that he can be a lead back, Thomas can't stay on the field, & Jonas Gray has never taken a snap in the NFL. The player who REALLY intrigues me is Thigpen but he, like Miller, was not used enough in the offense. Yes we know that Miller & Thigpen have the speed but can their bodies take the pounding for an entire season???

I think this is where a guy like Dwyer who wouldn't cost a lot makes sense. Sign Dwyer & let him compete with Thomas to be the change of pace back. If Thomas has a solid off-season, training camp, & pre-season then you can release Dwyer before the season & his contract wouldn't be guaranteed BUT I don't see that happening. I see Dwyer as the better player & I don't have the concerns about his durability that I have with Thomas.

As for the RB 'dwindling in importance' I couldn't disagree more. Just take a look at teams like the Niners, the Seahawks, the Broncos, & the Ravens who all have very good running games. The best teams in the NFL have balance. Even NE with Brady figured that out which is why they kept defenses guessing all year. If Philbin & Sherman honestly believe that they're going to try to replicate GB's offense that lacks an effective running game & has to constantly rely on the QB then they're both going to have short careers in Miami b/c Tannehill is NOT Aaron Rodgers. Even a QB as good as Rodgers needs help if GB is going to win another SB.

You know, so the jury is still out on Tannehill, but worst case scenario I think he is certainly a fine #2. So we give him another season and see. If he doesn't progress enough, draft high a qb in 2014, keep Tannehill, then we are set for years at QB.

..Dc..Are you kidding?? I have a whole wall of Jonas Grey Jerseys!!! (is his name Jonas?)

As far as Matt Moore goes. I'm not sure anything we can offer will match what he will get this offseason. I may be wrong, and he would love nothing more but to take a paycut, and carry a clipboard here in Miami(doesn't sound too bad)

This brings up an interesting scenario should Moore be called to duty elsewhere. This would mean we have Pat Devlin, and thats it. Scary if you think about odds Tannehill makes it through a full season without missing some time. So is QB. a position that we explore in the draft as well? And do we take it serious? Do we wait until the end of the draft and take a "flier". Or is the team set with Devlin?

Either way..I can't see a sceanrio in which Moore is re-signed here.

Tannehill will become a top ten qb this year !!!!!!!!!

DC,

I couldn't care less what the coaches & our GM says. I think the fans are being more realistic when it comes to players like Thomas & Egnew. Ireland & the coaches are not going to come out & say that they can't count on them for 2013 but clearly they know they can't. Ireland always has positive things to say about his draft picks the year after they failed to contribute. Remember Clyde Gates??? We're still very, very high on him right...They're full of sh#t.

The sad truth is that there's not ONE position that we're stocked at except LB assuming Dansby recovers from his injury. If we re-sign Moore then that would make two.

WNP, all good points. Let me clarify, I'm not saying RB isn't important, it's still needed (for the balance you stated). But we're seeing how the passing game in increasing while the running game is decreasing (maybe importance isn't the right word, so I'll say from a historical perspective). You brought up the Niners, who demolished Baltimore in the run game in the SB, and historical stats showed teams who did that crushed their opponents in SBs. Yet Baltimore won this one. Because of the prominence of the passing game.

I agree Tannehill isn't Rodgers and we need a run game to support our pass game. And I agree we don't have answers on our current squad. But the staff feels differently (if you believe what's being reported). I think they feel they made a mistake with holding Miller out as much as they did. And it sounds like they have high hopes in Gray. We'll see, but if they do grab a RB, I'm probably leaning towards them doing so in the later rounds of the Draft (like DD said). Not sure what Dwyer would cost, but also not so sure he's worth it (Steelers were awful at that position last year).

DD,

It looks like drafting a QB maybe after rd 4 should be in the cards unless there ends up being no market for Moore. I can't see us spending a whole lot for a #2 or #3 QB with several starting positions unsettled.

Only in Florida. First time this year my wife has been able to have a fire so she's driving me crazy over getting more firewood. Can't she see I'm trying to talk football.lol

"Tannehill will become a top ten qb this year !!!!!!!!!"

I'd say Top 15 BUT that's only if the protection improves, the running game improves, & he has more than two recievers to throw the football too.

I don't care what anyone says or thinks--if you put Tannehill on the Ravens, the Niners, the Seahwaks, or the Redskins he would have been in the mix for Rookie of the Year. It's not Tannehill's fault he got drafted by a bad team w/o any help.

However, Andrew Luck is a different animal & it's a crime that he didn't win Rookie of the Year. Best rookie QB I've seen in a LONG time. Not a great O-line & not a great running game BUT yet the kid still kept the Colts in almost every game. Lots of big name QB's would have struggled to win 11 games with that team.

Tannehill will fail and take down Ireland and Philbin with him. Look for a whole new rebuild with new GM and Coach in 2014 or 2015. It's already obvious.

What is obvious you big dummie he is the best prospect we have had in 20 years

"You brought up the Niners, who demolished Baltimore in the run game in the SB, and historical stats showed teams who did that crushed their opponents in SBs. Yet Baltimore won this one. Because of the prominence of the passing game."

The injury to Justin Smith killed the Niners more than anything the Ravens did. As soon as Justin Smith got hurt this year, Aldon Smith became invisible. No pass rush=good QB's tearing you up. And btw, this all Flacco is, a GOOD QB. He's not elite & he never will be. Same with Matt Ryan. They're both good QB's but they also play on teams that give them all the help in the world. As for $20 Million a year for Flacco??? That's just laughable. He'll never be a Brady or a Brees or a Rodgers or a Peyton or a Big Ben who are the only five truly ELITE QB's in the NFL.

BTW--Next up is Andrew Luck.

That isn't saying much. In today's league average doesn't cut it. Fiedler was still our best qb since Marino. Average.

..Dolfan Rick..I think it all depeds on a few factors. 1..Will the team re-sign Moore? I don't think this is too realistic. I would love to have him. But I think he will get offers that are better then what we will put on the table.
2...Free agency. We all know the draft will be different if we sign guys at spots that "fill holes"
3..How the team sees Pat Devlin. We can speculate until the cows come home about him. And yes the team still could put their faith behind him. Even then that leaves us with only 2 guys. It would make sense that at some point we would aquire a third, even if it is for a role on the practice squad.

So..would it be a suprise if they drafted a quarterback before the 4th round? Today, I would say yes. But, lets see what roster moves are made before draft day. Lets use the Redskins as an example. How many were shocked when they drafted Cousins? A lot of the fan base was up in arms because they thought it was a wasted pick..They had a lot of "holes" to fill, and they had traded away the farm to get in a postion to draft RGIII. I'm not saying we are the Skins. But it looks pretty smart today.

Quarterback is the most important player on the field. So to me it makes some sense to find a quality backup. Some may disagree, and that is fine. And if Devlin is the guy(which he may indeed be)..Then it makes a bit more sense to wait. But he may not be. Then what?

Tannehills are is wild. It always will be. You either have control or you don't. All the great qb's had control and precision by the time they entered the nfl. Tanne doesn't. You don't learn that.

arm

You sound like a person with no faith at all

The one thing we learned is Tannehill isnt very accurate. Start Moore or at least draft a QB like Barkley or Geno Smith.

"What is obvious you big dummie he is the best prospect we have had in 20 years"

Marc,

No doubt about it. No QB would have succeeded in this offense. Need to protect him better, need to run the ball better, & we need to give him some playmakers to throw the ball to. Not Ireland's fault that Long's body has broken down but Ireland also did nothing to give Tannehill a chance in 2012. All I know is that Ireland is extremely lucky that Philbin took the job b/c it's amazing we won seven games with basically only two receivers & with Long having his worst season.

That's not true he completed like 58 percent the guy can throw the ball

some of you dorks always have to learn the hard way.

Marc let me guess, you were still a Henne fan in 2010.

Is everyone ignoring the fact that Tannehill looks like a Henne repeat?

"Tannehills are is wild. It always will be. You either have control or you don't. All the great qb's had control and precision by the time they entered the nfl. Tanne doesn't. You don't learn that."

Carl,

Really??? You're talking out of your a@@.

Eli Manning was FAR worse than Tannehill was as a rookie. Eli completed only 48.2% of his passes & had a QB rating of 55.4 which sucks. In Eli's 2nd season he still only completed 52.8% of his passes & in his 3rd he only completed 57.7% of his passes.

Tannehill completed 58.3% (which is good for a rookie) of his passes with only two players who could catch the football.

Marc was a Henne HOMER lover until the day they let him go! LMFAO!!!

DD,

We're getting closer to finding these things out. The suspence is killing me though. I kind of agree with some of the other posters. Moore would be the best fit as the back up and Devlin #3.

We used to always keep a verteran backup on the roster. Apparently though Moore isn't ready to give up on starting.

You bring up a good point though, if you have to address it in the draft, maybe you do have to go higher than 4.

WNP,

Anyone can complete 2 yd passes.

Yes I did have hope henne would succeed I can not tell a lie and yes I have a henne jersey but so do a lot of us ,but Ryan tannehill is in a different league

Dofan Rick, also there would need Moore if gnou Tanehill was out injure and sdnds the team for six weeks even moths longer so they refd protect romthis and still gmnaes played that counted.
