« Dolphins history with free agency? Not great | Main | NFL Combine this week -- the invitees (with video) »

Live blog chat here at 2 p.m.

There's plenty to talk about the Dolphins as they prepare for the Combine next week.

So this is a good time for a live chat.

I'll be here at 2 p.m. and if you are here, we can discuss the team. If you cannot be here then, leave your questions or comments now and I'll address them. You can check back later to see my response to your comment.

Topics on the table:

All free agency -- Miami's own and those about to be cut loose by other teams.

The draft. Who fits. Who doesn't. Miami's needs.

Anything else that comes to your mind.

Before anyone asks: The team has said the new logo will be unveiled in April. So that's out of the way.

The TE position should be in the draft only. There will 3 good available by the second round pick.

Armando,

My question is about Tyrann Mathieu. I believe he will be at the Combine (do you know?). If he grades out well, and says all the right things, do you think the team will show any interest in him (even in later rounds)? I think he will be a steal, especially for a team that needs turnovers, and has such a woeful secondary as we do.

since there is still a bit of time before any meaningful football decisions are made, where are the logos the herald chose as 10 best? you closed the contest over 2 weeks ago.

if you consider the entire draft haul the 08 and 09 drafts don't look that bad. 08: Long, Langford, Donald Thomas, Bess and Carpenter. 09: Vontae, Sean Smith, Hartline and Clemons. 4 NFL starters per draft is far above average, even if Ireland didn;t draft a true difference maker until 2010 with Reshad Jones.

Jonathan B, I don't know of the "law" of which you speak. I do know that neither Marlins park nor AAA has housed any homeless people.

Moreover, I know the Dolphins have soccer and tractor pulls and concerts and other events at the facility during the offseason. So I don't see it becoming a homeless shelter.

My newest mancrush is S Kenny Vaccaro. Any chance he's on the Fins radar? Sign Jennings and draft Vaccaro?

Armando,

Any update on the contracts for Long, Hartline, and Clemmons? Are any other Dolphin FA be considered to be signed back?

GOAT reference win @ 2:02

Are you driving the Brinks Truck to Mike Wallace's house, or am I? I would consider this offseason a disappointment if we do not land Wallace.

Also, if Hartline is asking for $6M, and Jennings would cost $8M, could we not conceivably sign Jennings and Wallace and let Hartline walk? $18M for a pair of proven #1 WRs vs. $16M for a #1 and #2. Give me the former all day.

mm7713: Yes, the Dolphins will address the RB position, but you have to remember, it has been addressed a lot in recent years.

They spent a No. 2 on Daniel Thomas in a trade up and they drafted Lamar Miller last year. Eventually, your draft picks have to step up. Having said that, I wouldn't doubt Miami either drafting another RB, re-signing Reggie Bush (at their price) or signing a very, very cheap RB in FA. But he has to be cheap.

I LIKE EDDIE LACEY IN THE SECOND ROUND. LET BUSH WALK. TRADE A 3RD AND 4TH FOR PERCY. SIGN WALLACE OR AVERY. DRAFT BEST AVAILABLE IN THE FIRST ADDRESS TE WITH KELLER OR BENNETT. I LIKE BARRETT JONES IN THE SECOND AND FILL HOLES WITH THE REMAINING PICKS.

DC....

ALL good points....that can't be ignored....

What I liked about Morris was how hard he ran.....he refused to let the 1st man tackle him (his words)...and he ran ALWAYS wanting to be gang tackled....kinda like the dude from the Texans.....

imo...its Morris;s running style (coupled with the afore mentioned factors) that helped him have the type of season he had....

taking nothing away from you're post of course....

Armando,

Ay chance we get Lebron James to play qb, te, or wr?

Armando, who would you like the Dolphins to take with their first overall pick this year ?

Mando,

Why is this guy Norman Braman (past owner of the Eagles) getting involved & causing problems with the Dolphin stadium renovations???

And more importantly does he remind you of Hyram Roth from Godfather 2??? LOL!!!

Ringo, when word got out that the Dolphins were negotiating to bring Keith Jackson to the Dolphins (yeah, I broke that story), the very next day I was in the locker room and overheard Clayton and Duper talking about there not being enough balls in the offense to go around. Clayton was the loudest to complain and actually said the same thing to the media in interviews.

Four or five days later, Jackson caught a TD against the Bills in his first game. And the first guy to meet him in the end zone and celebrate with him?

Mark Clayton.

No more complaints.

Would love to see team resign Fasano, who is vastly underrated, and sneak back in the end of the 1st round and take the TE from Notre Dame or the one from Stanford. Davis, Cook, and Bennett won't make it to FA. I would consider Keller if for nothing else that it weakens a divisional opponent.

What TE do you have an eye for?

I agree Kris. That's the draft Ireland needs to have this year, hit on a quality guy like that late (or undrafted like he did Bess a few years ago).

Thanks for replying to the Te Question Mando.

I know fans will go mad at this, but I know you like Andy Levitre.

Any word they are interested and can Ireland get away with spending 5-25m on a guard again

What kind of crack induced coma would you have to be in to think the Vikes would deal Harvin for a 3/4th rounder?

Armando,

If the dolphins want Mike Wallace and have to over pay for him would they?

Armando, if there was one guy on the roster that team brass expects to elevate his game to an elite level next year who would that be? I'm guessing maybe Olivier Vernon?

CAUSE THEY ARE GONNA LOOSE HIM ANYWAY NEXYT YEAR AND NOBODY IS GONNA GO 1ST OR 2ND ROUNDER FOR A GUY THAT MISSED 16 GAMES IN TEO YEARS....JACK ASS

Armando,

Also could you expand on what you've heard they will do in the secondary (as you can see, this is a main point of concern for me)? Heard anything about who they are likely to keep (besides Clemons, which you reported earlier)? Anyone they will take a hard look at in the Combine (or FA)? I read Croyle likes to develop younger talent at the CB position, so would that lead me to believe they will draft one?

We Need Playmakers, Braman was very vocal in his fight against the Marlins, too. He lost because the issue was new and the politicians are stupid and the media didn't properly vet the issue.

But ...

The Marlins screwed Miami-Dade, leaving many of the politicians that voted in their favor out of a job, and making the media look stupid.

So this time around, everyone is on guard. It's not so much Braman but everyone else is looking at this thing sideways before buying in.

As for Roth = Braman. I see it! He better be careful at MIA.

Armando,

Would you consider, getting wallace, jennings and hartline. trading bess and using hartline at the slot?

At what point in time do the fins start to groom Dansby's replacement? Doesn't look like there is one on the roster now. I hope they draft now to prepare for his departure in the next year or 2.

"if you consider the entire draft haul the 08 and 09 drafts don't look that bad. 08: Long, Langford, Donald Thomas, Bess and Carpenter. 09: Vontae, Sean Smith, Hartline and Clemons. 4 NFL starters per draft is far above average, even if Ireland didn;t draft a true difference maker until 2010 with Reshad Jones."

First of all a draft is only as good as the players that are still contributing to your roster. If Thomas, Langford, & Vontae are playing for other teams then how is that helping us??? If they were that great they'd still be here. And I'm guessing you can add Long & Smith to that list as well.

We're getting a 2nd back for Vontae & probably some low supplemental pick this year for Langford. Let's see if these picks help.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't LOSE him next year. I will tell you one thing though..if he wants a big payday next year he better show up to camp on time and ready to go or else he will non-work himself into a mediocre contract.

Armando,

Friends and relatives Im talking to in Miami saying they will vote "NO" to referendum.

Mando,
Between starks and Long, which one do you think we re-sign?

Armando,

Draft day comes, Ireland and Philbin both have a strong conviction for a certain player when it's time for the Dolphins to pick in round one...

Problem is, it's not the same player.

Which guy gets picked?

NeMo, the draft comes after free agency, as you know.

So I think it's kind of backward for me to say, the Dolphins should take this guy or that guy without knowing what they're going to do in free agency. Don't you?

I mean, if the Dolphins sign Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline an Greg Jennings in free agency, is anyone going to say they should take a WR?

No way! Use the draft on other areas.

If the team adds Cliff Averil, do they need a DE in the draft?

I'm not saying those moves will happen. But I am saying we should be focused on how well or poorly the team does in free agency.

By the way, I don't see them signing 10 guys. Maybe 3-6. Just my gut.

Irish, if Brink's gives me the key to the truck, I'm driving to MY house!!!! LOL.

To your point, yes, it is conceivable Miami opts to let Hartline go to pay a higher price for Jennings.

But I believe the more likely scenario is EITHER Wallace or Jennings -- not both.

That's not a guarantee, but the vibe I get is that Jennings will be a fallback move if the team fails to get Wallace.

Hartline, meanwhile, wants his deal done before the start of free agency.

Armando, regarding the logo change: Can you set straight a few of the bloggers here that this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the football end of things?

Some here have suggested that the team hierarchy is somehow consumed with this process in lieu of paying attention to the team itself, which I find ludicrous in the extreme. Entirely different group of people (including the NFL's marketing arm) did the logo redesign--which I believe is already a finished process, anyway.

I'd say more like 2 or 3, not counting camp bodies to kick the tires on.

Mando, what in house free agents do you think the Dolphins will keep and which ones will they let walk?

Do you think 6 million dollars a year will be enough to keep Hartline ?

Jared, just want to say with respec, I love Reshad JOnes. He's coming on strong. He keeps improving, he's going to be outstanding.

But he is not yet a difference maker.

He had a great game vs. Buffalo in December. But did he turn tha game around?

And can you name me another great game by him?

Again, he's very good. Want him on my team. UP-and-COMING.

But he hasn't arrived yet.

We Need Playmakers, Braman was very vocal in his fight against the Marlins, too. He lost because the issue was new and the politicians are stupid and the media didn't properly vet the issue.

But ...

Mando,

I can actually see Braman's point that Ross is worth $4 Billion so he should pay for the entire renovation. After all it's Ross' team & no one benefits from this renovation more than him.

However, Braman called the city/county paying $200 Million 'welfare for billionaires' which is accurate but I just don't understand why another billionaire (which Braman is) is so vocal against this??? Is Braman all of sudden trying to be the man of the people in Miami??? I don't get it....

Jaison, the Herald logo contest winners was the top story for about three days on the website. Look harder.

Armando,

Whats your position on the state of the Fins oline. Does it or doesnt it need to be addressed in this offseason, and if so, how do you think it needs to be addressed?

David, you are correct.

The business side is handling the logo issue, not the football side.

Armando,

What players have been at the facility?

Armando....

Does Ireland still have his "teflon Don" Status with Ross.....

is there a scenario (aside from 1-15) in which you see Ireland getting the boot....is there a MAGIC # of wins that needs to be reached....tangible progress....for lack of a better word....

Armando,

Safety Kenny Vaccaro has been mocked to us. Sure several different players have been mocked to us, but whats your opinion on Vaccaro at #12?

The Signal, that's not quite how it works and let me tell you why:

On draft day, the Dolphins already have a board set and they typically follow their board.

If there is a disagreement on two players, it will come days before when the team is trying to finalize its board. That's when the arguing is done.

And in the argument on personnel, Jeff Ireland has final say over Philbin. Just as Philbin has final say on coaching matters.

Armando,

I'm just saying this team has 3 players (Wake, Pouncey) that are top 5 at their position and Jones is one of them. Just cause he isn't the next coming of Ed Reed doesn't mean he isn't a difference maker relative to his peers. 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and positive grades in both the pass and run game sounds like a guy who can raise the level of an entire unit.

Huss, your scenario on a Bess trade is very, very unlikely.

"Does Ireland still have his "teflon Don" Status with Ross.....

LOL@Kris. I don't get it either. He's the Matt Millen of Miami.

Hello. Considering that Miami is the second youngest team in the league, how long you can expect the team to be a contender from a maturity and continuity stand point?

JRS, Reshad Jones.

As I said previously, he's coming on.

It is the reason the club is seriously considering a contract extension for him.

Armando,

Its been the opinion of several posters, over the years, that SS and PBP reaks more Dolphin related news than The Herald sports.

Would you agree or disagree to that, and why?

Hey Armando thanks for answering questions.
say the Dolphins address receiver with Wallace and defensive end with Kruger. Would you advocate trading down in the first and getting the best tight end in the draft. IMHO Eiffert wolud be awesome as a tight end and as a fourth receiver in those sets.
Thanks again

Mike, that is a great question on Wallace but you have to define overpay.

Most free agents signed early get overpaid in my opinion. So ...

If you're talking $14M a year, no way. I see $11M as the top, top, top, top end for Wallace. He deserves much less. But the market will determine the price.

Random Question, What did Gene Atkins do to be labeled a cancer for the Dolphins I was young when he played, I keep reading about it and want to know what made him so horrible. This isnt a question for Armando

Armando,

My position on a TE is that the Dolphins need to get one from free agency to get one that is athletic and can contribute right away. Any insight on this? Also Wallace would be best over Jennings!

Titus Young was released. Gone after 9 days with the Rams....This kid is a mess.

Do you think the Dolphins are more likely to address needs at the CB position in the draft or FA? Might we see Ireland trade up in the first round for Dee Milliner?

WNP....

How is that even possible....its like that FRIDAY movie....

"how are you gonna get fired on your day off"....

C'mon, cmon ask good queston of Armando. He said they(I assume FO) told him they would try for Wallace. What is your % of probability that would happen, Armando?
