Mayock: Draft offer depth but few 'difference makers'

As you saw in the list of players that have been invited to the coming NFL Combine, there are dozens of juniors and they are responsible for making this draft class deep.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock agrees that is exactly what teams are likely to see out of this draft: Depth.

"Because of the juniors, we probably have better depth than in last 10 years," Mayock said today on a national conference call.

But ...

While that will create more value for later-round picks -- remember the Dolphins have two picks in the second round and two in the third - Mayock doesn't see stardom at the top of the draft.

"The top 10 picks, I don't see difference makers," Mayock said.

He went on to say that he sees the fifth pick and the 25th pick as having similar talent.

Wouldn't you know it? The Dolphins, a team that has plenty of solid players but few difference makers, are looking for that thing that Mayock says the top of the draft lacks. And with the No. 12 overall selection, the Dolphins are in that area where Mayock says difference makers are not evident.

The Dolphins need help at cornerback, wide receiver, defensive end and tight end. Yes, it would be good to add a pass-rusher to start opposite Cameron  Wake, but Mayock isn't sold on the players most gurus have atop that group.

"I don't think Bjoern Werner or Damontre Moore are top 10 players," he said.

The Dolphins need a running back, you say?

Mayock has only one -- Alabama's Eddie Lacy -- graded for the first round.

Mel Kiper has the Dolphins picking Tennessee wide receiver Cordarelle Patterson in the first round. Mayock likes him, too. He gives him a first-round grade, one of only two wide receivers he gives first-round grades to.

"You put hut him on tape, and he’s going to take your breath away. He’s a special talent," Mayock said. But then Mayock also adds Patterson comes with major upside but major risk as well due to his inexperience.

Mayock likes an offensive lineman for the Dolphins at No. 12. He says he has six offensive tackles with first round grades.

Meanwhile, Mayock said he sees Alabama OG Chance Warmack as the best player he's studied on tape this year.

And the former special teams player and safety called this year's safety class "one of the best safety classes in years."

Mayock only has one cornerback -- Alabama's Dee Milliner -- graded for the first round.

So what does all this mean?

I'd say that if a majority of teams share Mayock's opinion about the top of the round, it will be very difficult for teams at that height to trade down. And it would be easier and less expensive for teams wanting to get up there to trade up.

The lack of cornerback talent high in the draft is also good for pending Dolphins free agent Sean Smith and the multitude of free agent corners about to hit the market.

YG,

I'm not going to argue the point with you. I believe it's imperative that we sign a WR in FA. There are no guarantees when drafting these kids to the NFL. Some hit right away, most take time to deliver. The Niners draft a kid in Jenkins last year, 30th overall who had zero CATCHES last year, never mind ZERO TDs. To simply go with rookies and no vets or Hartline is an swful mistake IMO and will cause Tannehill to struggle more than he did last year. You can stick a fork in the season and with it the end of Ireland's career in Miami.

be huge to get wallace, kid can play and will only get better, very young

Dont Be So Sure That The Pats Will Not Go After Wallace. According to Bleacher Report:

"The New England Patriots project to have $18.6 million in free cap space this offseason, good enough for eighth best in the NFL. However, the Pats are more top heavy than when the team built its savvy cap management reputation with a balanced roster without overpaying even its stars.

Tom Brady, Vince Wilfork and Logan Mankins are scheduled to take up almost 35 percent of the team's cap, which could be impetus for the team to try to rework some of their deals.

With major holes at wide receiver and cornerback, and no depth at either position, the Patriots will be plenty busy this offseason."

So with holes and no depth at "WR" and corner. The team can "rework deals" with Brady, Wilfork, and Mankins to get it done. Plus they have $18.6 million and havet had a legit deepthreat wr since Moss 1st season there.

If you have Tom Brady, why the hell wouldnt you consider bringing in a legit deepthreat like Wallace. Dolfans love dreaming a dream it seems.

YG,

Because that's not the way they operate. They've never put a lot of emphasis at the WR position. They've always gone with guys like Branch and Edelman and Brown etc...Looks like they will lose Welker but I've said it before, if Hartline is avaialble, that's the guy they will target.

Sounds like they are going to franchise Vollmer, which will cost big money. Then their secondary is a mess too. I've heard they'll be interested in Ed Reed and they also need to figure out what they want to do with Talib.

There's no PRECEDENCE for them to go out and spend $55-60 mil on a WR. Won't happen.

CraigM,

What I dont get, is when we dont have a wealth of upper rd picks, and dont draft a wr early. Most dolfans cry we should have drafted one. But after hindsight of seeing of couple of those rookie wr's excell their first season.

Now that we have a wealth of upper rd picks, now everyone's getting scared to draft a wr. There'sall kinds of excuses why we shouldnt.

Plaese tell me, exactly when do we draft a wr within the the 1st 2 rds? Or do dolfans just loving talking s h i t when we dont?

And don't be so f8cking condescending with this 'Dolfans love dreaming a dream it seems'. We're all here just giving opinions. Yours isn't any more important than anybody elses.

I'm off to the gym. Have fun!

YG,

I'll indulge you. I have no problem taking a WR in the 2nd or 3rd round. I wouldn't take one before and I don't see the need to take more than one at this stage. That all changes if somehow we f8ck up in FA and get no one. THEN we have a problem.

Omg, here comes the Welker/Hartline, the Pats will get him mania. Im so....... sure, Hartline will turn into the Calvinator if he goes to The Pats.

Im am soo......... shaking in my boots that Hartline may sign with the Pats. Why he could turn into another Wes Welker.

People, please, Hartline and Welker 360 degrees in difference. Its like comparing Water to fire. Please quit your god damn trembling.

This is precisely why the phins need to spend big & spend wisely to sign STARTERS in FA. The Ireland experiemtn will end or be extended based on this offseason.

If the Phins sign a starting TE, WR, CB, FS in FA, which they should & MUST do IMHO;

It allows the teams 1st 5 picks to focus on finding a pass rusher, an athletic guard, another CB, WR & tackle.

Rest of the draft can be to find a brusing RB so we can throw Thomas to the curb. OLB & MLB to eventually replace Dansby/Burnett long term.

It can be done if Ireland isn't frugal. If it isn't done, it will spell the end of the ireland era. Either way, it's a win win for fans.

This team sinks or swims over the next 3-4 years based on this offseason.

Gimme a break with the "wouldn't you know it" draft handwringing....obviously nobody knew that guys like Gronk, Graham, B Marsh, V Jax, Welker and plenty of others would be the kind of difference makers they've turned into or they wouldn't have lasted past Rd 1... Nobody knows for sure, incl Mayock

CraigM,

I can also make a beter case for why Jennings could choose The Pats over coming here. Especially if he feels Ireland lowballs him. He may take the same lowball offer from the Pats just to have a better chance of winning a sb ring before he retires.

I believe its very much much possible we could end up with none of the top 3 fa wr's. Very damn ossible. This is Jeff Ireland running the show. He hasnt exactly endeared himself to any of the players in the national football league.

Hey guys, the Pats are a better option/destination for FAs in almost every case......deal with it--but not everybody signs with them

I'll indulge you. I have no problem taking a WR in the 2nd or 3rd round. I wouldn't take one before and I don't see the need to take more than one at this stage. That all changes if somehow we f8ck up in FA and get no one. THEN we have a problem.

Agreed. You take a WR when he is regarded as BPA. I think giving a 1st rd grade to Patterson is very generous at this point. He is VERY RAW! I don't see him hitting the field for at least 2-3 years. Look at his highlights and you will see he runs high and dances way too much! Also, most of his plays didn't come off of receptions but rather reverses and returns. BIG Project and we need immediate impact guys!
I say we do the smart thing and get proven FA's at WR and overhaul this offensive line so Fasano and Lane don't have to hang back in pass protection against a four man rush! That instantly spreads the offense open, creating more separation for WR's without even addressing an upgrade there!

I'm off to the gym. Have fun!

If it isn't too much to ask, don't come back!

well yesterday depends who u rate as top 3. i wouldnt put jennings in there. id much rather have amendola than him

I wished that I had the same confidence that you guys have that top tier fa's will actually want to come here and play for Jeff Ireland.

Outside of Karlos Dansby, I cant eve name one. Dansby came because we were the only ones willing to overpay him. Though not bad, he certainly isnt worth what we paid for him.

Ireland can occasionally sign a 2nd tier or 3rd tier fa's. But that's because 2nd and 3rd tier fa's really dont have much of a choice.

Back in the Shula era, we could have pick of the litter when it came to top tier fa's. Yesterday's Gone 4Ever folks! LOL...

No FA with a choice would choose the Dullfins unless they paid him triple!

Dustybottoms,

That just may be who you'll end up with in fa, a 2nd tier like Amendola.

Hell if Amendola is rated 2nd tier, I wonder what that makes Hartline? I saw a top 50 fa ranking publication that had Danny Amendola rated #23 and Hartline rated #49.

And yes, it did have Jennings rated higher than Amendola dusty. LOL....

Because its a business! Athletes care more about the money, it's the fans that care about team legacy and winning!
People will sign in Miami because of the nice weather and the Florida tax exemptions when everything else is equal.

I'm off to the gym. Have fun!

translation - he's goin ice fishin

YG,

There not coming here to play for Jeff Ireland. They're coming here to play for Joe Philbin. How much interaction do you actually think the players have with Ireland? Seriously? He's not in any of the meetings and he's not interacting with them on a day to day basis. It's about Philbin and the coaches and it's pretty clear that a guy like Jennings respects Philbin. Pretty obvious from all I've read that Bush wants to be back. Think that has anything to do with Ireland? Of course not. It's about the opportunity and is this team heading in the right direction? To be honest, the Miami situation has a lot to offer. God weather, no state tax, a promising young QB, an up and coming HC, $46 mil to spend in FA and five of the first 90 picks. Oh yeah, there's a pretty good nucleus forming here and the team went 7-9 last year, when no one gave them a chance. Not all doom and gloom.

Posted by: Reality | February 18, 2013 at 04:36 PM

Dolfans have become delussional. They assume these players would actually want to come and play for Jeff Ireland.

Football players have long memories. Its only after their playing careers do they develop dymensia and Alzheimers. LOL....

yes i know jennings is rated higher than amendola, i just said id rather have amendola.

The Woodshed Gang,

Quit the kool aid! The Dolphins are strictly minor league with an incompetent GM, terrible owner, unproven HC, and crap QB.

This draft is awesome deep as hell in all our need positions

Craig M for MORON says goodbye but NEVER leaves!! LMFAO!!

last i read Craig M was a fat f u c k. Not sure what hes working off

Joe Philbin is not conducting the negoriations. Jeff Ireland is the face that signs them.

Outside of Greg Jennings, no one in fa knows or have played for Philbin. Until Philbin became a candidate for our hc job, I'll bet 99% of the Dolphin fanbase had ever heard of him neither. It was all Mike Mc Carthy.

Even Philbins pedigree is built thru Mike McCarthy and GB. Aprat from this, Philbin's done zero to create his own legacy. So why should these other fa's give a damn about Joe Philbin.

Are they CraigM clones or something?

Couldn't find a Jets blog to post on huh?

Wonder if Craigs massive man crush on hartline would force him to cheer for a different team if miami doesnt resign MR EXPLOSIVE LoL

I don't like the Patterson pick at all. I hate these 'raw' players with lots of potential that never work out. Give me someone that has a proven history of production in college. It's this mentality that keeps a Brady until the 6th rd but has a JaMarcus Russell as first overall. Rather take K Allen or my personal favorite: Zack Ertz. Guy will be a TD machine in the pros and could be the security blanket for THill...

CraigM,

Speaking of Reggie Bush, he came here in trade, not fa right? Do you actually believ Bush would have signed in Miami had it not been in trade? If you do, I have some beachfront swamp swamp property for sell.

Who cares about the lowly Fins?

No self-respecting FA will sign with Ireland, UNLESS a serious bonus is factored into the guaranteed salary.

What talented player would come to Ireland's swamp of raw sewage?

The greatest draft problem we have, is some of you are knocking whats available, but forget we're trying to replace "medicrity" at these positions.

Especially at TE and WR.

T 2nd that factual "EMOTION". Makes me want to cry with joy! LOL...

Your mom came!

I

Money Talks more than respectablility in the NFL, and with Irelands credability, $$$ will have to be the negotiating factor more than what philbin or Ireland see in their so called VISION of this team praises to any FA's that visit here.

You people are all haters it makes me freekin sick you are all losers so go kill yourselves

The dolphins are gonna rebound that's a fact BUT YOU WILL STILL BE LOSERS

No matter who I sign, his mancrush with me is permanent.

You want a "difference maker"? Draft one of those Ss, Vaccaro or Elam. Guaranteed product.

Agreed. But first we must replace "medicrity" with " mediocrity" in my humble opinion.

Jeff Ireland is doing the best he can and he has made some good and bad moves but that's the way it goes,,,,,,he's on the right track

God hasnt been mean to Miamians. Since the Dolphins last sb title he's sent 4 Hurricane national titles, 2 Marlins world series titles, and 2 Heat nba championship titles.

Its only out of town out of touch dolfanerswho have suffered. Miamians ar A-ok! LOL....

Looks like the Heat are working on their 3rd title Hurricanes basketball could be working on their first championship ever. God vacations in Miami! LOL...

The pathetic Dullfins breed haters. We've wasted far too much time and money on this trash franchise.

I jacked Yo Knife Fool

What u gonna do Cuz??

Difference maker = Gamechanger, I assume.

Where's YO're knife at BIATCH??

I think I innocently walked into something here, Jacknife. My bad. When you first enter a Blog, you should read the previous 10-15 posts, to see what you're adventuring into.

I bet we go 10-6 next year

Since the dolphins last won a sb we've been in 2 sb games, at least 7 national championship games, 3 nba championship appearance, and 2 world series.

That's 14 championship title apearances since the Dolphins last won a sb. God really does vacation in Miami. LOL...

Oscar believe me I know all about them I'm in disguise

Hell, I forgot to mention all of the U of M baseball world series titles and appearances. LOL....
