Sean Smith has suitors but will he stay hungry?

Yes, there is tampering at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. What else does one expect when you gather agents of looming NFL free agent players and team personnel department people in one town for several days?

And that is assuredly at the root of a report out of csnphilly.com stating that the Eagles "would like to address their shaky secondary by considering Dolphins cornerback Sean Smith, according to a person with knowledge of the team’s free-agent strategy."

So, if the report is accurate, Smith will have at least one suitor unless he re-signs with the Dolphins when free agency begins March 12.

But ...

The key issue in the report is price. The report states the Eagles will be "leery of engaging in a bidding war that inflates the price tag."

Well, that puts them in the same position as the Dolphins.

The Dolphins have always been eager to keep Smith. That is not the issue. He's a solid player. But price is the issue.

As I've reported since December, Smith wants $8-$10 million per season and he wants considerable guaranteed money. The Dolphins and I dare say many teams, but primarily the Dolphins because they know Smith best, are wary of paying Smith major guaranteed money because they aren't 100 percent certain how he'll react to that boon.

Will he continue to push to improve?

Will he continue to be inconsistent?

Or will he get comfortable or complacent and feel a sense of entitlement.

I assume Smith would dispel that concern. But it doesn't mean it would go away. Remember that after starting all the games his rookie season, Smith showed serious signs of entitlement his second season (2010) and was actually benched for parts of that season in favor of Jason Allen.

It wasn't until that benching snapped him out of that feeling that he'd arrived did he return to his previous work ethic and level of play. Then he regained his job.

So the issue here is not what teams will be interested in Sean Smith. I assume many will, including the Dolphins.

The issue is which will be willing to pay him major guaranteed money without fear he'll stay hungry.

Tell Sean Smith we will pay a Million dollars for every INT he's ever had. That will kill that noise.
Some dumb Team will probably pay him though.

Dump the bum already.

Kris...

You are like a broken record.....

We Can Only Hope!

If This Doesn't Prove! S.Smith Is Overvalued!! I Don't Know What Does!!

The Eagles Have Been The Worst Judge In CB Talent! For A While! Plus! Chip Kelly Has Bust Written All Over Him!

If The Cb's Look Anything Like The Wr's!! S.Smith Is Easily Replaceable!

YG DB LOL got SCHOOLED last night! Torn apart, exposed, busted and BUMPED out of action!

Deservedly so.

Thanks to all the bloggers that contributed.

Where do my posts go when they don't appear???

Mando,

The kid is too inconsistent. There is no RIGHT price to keep him Miami. The answer is to sign a CB that is a better player like Cary Williams.

Same thing for Long. Just let them go.

Long is better than any LT we could possibly replace him with. Let's not be stupid.

It'll be funny if NO one offers Sean Smith a contract.

WNPs,

I like Lewis from the Steelers. Not sure if he'll make it to FA and what his price might be but he'd be a good add.

Kris (from the last blog),

Always be fearful when a guy like Monte is agreeing with you. You might want to re-consider your position.

Im watching the combine and am starting to think that we should sign jennings and draft two WR's instead of signing Wallace and Hartline. Im liking Swope and Woods in the 2nd round.

Craig M,

Any plans for your upcoming 3rd birthday?

Anyone that wants to pay Jake Long and Sean Smith are on drugs that's not how you improve both players are marginal at best and you want to pay the 25 million NO THANKS

To my Eyes, the truly NFL ready WR's in the Draft are Steadman Bailey and DeAndre Hopkins. The rest need polish

If you aren't part of the solution, then you're part of the problem. Not sure who said that, but it sure is true, especially in the case of our FAs. Who really helped our team last year? Not Hartline (had one huge game, otherwise mediocre), not Smith, not Long. The only keeper I see is Starks. I'll bet good money that's who we franchise, if we use the tag.

Smith is too inconsistent. He's been around plenty long enough to have developed. The last thing we need in our secondary is an unknown. Is FA a solution? I have no idea. I'm fairly certain though that Smith is NOT a solution. Therefore, he's part of the problem ...

I told you guys all along that this is a very deep draft be patient . Plus 45 million is a lot of money but we can't waste it on players on the decline or are not worth it (Sean smith) use the money on your own young ascending players and add proven playmakers this team will be fine if you can't see this your thoughts are clouded

Marc,

Couldn't agree more. These guys HURT the team last year not helped so why would Ireland or the coaches want them back???? I just don't get it.

I'm so sick of all the nonsensical rumors & misinformtion already...FA can't get here fast enough!!!

Marc,

I wish someone would lock Ireland in the basement until the start of FA. All he has to do is let Smith & Long leave. I'm so sick of reading that he wants these guys back at the 'right price.' There is no 'right price' for either player. Any team that signs either player will get ripped off.

If we don't think Jonathan Martin is the answer @ LT then draft Lane Johnson @ 12.

See this is why I cant be a fan of this team anymore. I just bought a Bush jersey last season and now he may be gone. Its sickening how you cant have a favorite player as a Dolphin fan. Its musical chairs for cheaper scrubs every year.

S.Smith sucks PERIOD PERIOD !! Draft 3 WR's and groom them with Tannehill Dolphins are still light years behind pats ravens broncos and texans !!

Isn't it about time for you guys to start using terms like 'hip pivot' and 'initial burst' and 'field awareness' in a desperate (and comical) attempt to actually sound as if you havethe slightest idea what you are talking about?

C'mon. Humor me.

ATL,

Then go root for the ELITE Matt Ryan & the Falcons already.

LMAO!

If we sign a top wr a top te say Wallace/Jennings or Keller/cook/Davis and mabe a cb along with Starks Fasano,Clemmons, and hartline for the right money then we are set for the draft if we do this we can pick whoever we want

Posted by: God, This Blog is Awful | February 24, 2013 at 02:19 PM

What does that make you who reads enough of it to know?

Dnt sign long or smith both are trash an not worth the money there asking for

Yes I have switched to the Falcons. Tired of the Fins antics.

AtlFin,

It's called 'life in the NFL'. Happens to EVERY other team too. Watch Welker leave NE. Bradshaw is done in NYG. Asomaghu soon in Philly. Kolb likely too. And very good chance Reed isn't in Baltimore next year. This is how it is in the NFL today. Has NOTHING to do with us or getting 'cheaper scrubs'. Deal with it or find another team.

God,

Nope....I leave that to Mike Mayock aka The Draft Whisperer. He was a 10th round pick & had a cup of coffer in the NFL so OBVIOUSLY he knows everything about scouting.

They must pay you well to keep repeting this dribble here.

The only two players really worth keeping are Pouncey and Soliai. The rest are disposable.

Dude I fell you I have a closet full of jerseys that I can't wear , and I thought tannehill would be a safe choice but guess what new uniforms this year

And yet you're still here, commenting on a team you don't support any more. What gives with that?

All those guys were with their teams a lot more then 2 years Craig. Dont compare apples with oranges.

Gator Bill,

Smith and his inconsistant play is part of the problem, he can not cut and run with the receivers so he plays soft. He wants $8-$10M. He is not worth that much for sure. Long is very good but may not be worth what he's asking. A cheeper solution should be available to replace him in this years draft. Moreover Hartline had a good year but if the Dolphins can find a suitable replacement paying him the big payday may not be worth it. There are options for the Dolphins to obtain a number one and two in both free agency and the draft. Hartline could be one of the contingency situations Ireland was referring to. If he is asking for $8M then the Dolphins should find other options.

AtlFin,

Hope you didn't go out and buy a Michael Turner jersey too.

Reed was with the Ravens 13 years?

Take it from the source. He still complains that we didn't take the great Matt Ryan.

Exactly. Long & Smith aren't going to get any better that what we've seen. And what we've seen ain't good enough. Even at 1/2 of what these guys want, I'd still be looking to replace them.

Yup I'm out. Tired of this team circus. Enough is enough.

AtlFin......what does that even mean, you "switched" to the Falcons?--your heart is with a team, or its not......you have genuine passion for a team, or you dont.....sort of hard to just come and go when it comes to sports, no?--if not then you're not a real fan of (whatever) team anyway.....which is fine--but aint no switching.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! WE'RE TIRED OF THE CLASSLESS INCOMPETENT GM! HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!

Benz,

You're talking about a guy that wants to have Matt Ryan's baby.

Boycott your mamma you ignorant loser this is a miami dolphin blog Jeff Ireland is a miami dolphin if your not in you are out soooo shut up

Doesnt everyone with a brain? Especially if they dont want Long anymore and continue to have crap for a QB.

A little shocking. My guy R. Swope ran a 4.34 40 as fast as T. Austin. He had some pretty darn good workout numbers for a guy supposedly going in the 3rd or 4th round. Give me that guy in the second round.

The man set us up for our best offseason ever HELLO HELLO DO YOU HEAR ME

Fan = fanactic
Fanactic = nutjob

Fanactic over a losing team = greatst nutjobs of all

Atlfin choosing a winning team = very wise nutjob

Dolfans = nutjob pain freaks

LOL...

Im considering finding a new team to root for also. It isnt even because of the Dolphins performance. Its because of the wierdo so called fans that post here. LOL...

Well they need taken fast players drfts then put on the team reglure at WIDE RECEVER and at the RUN BACK also. so then there is great SPEED on yl field for the quaterback RYAN TANHILL he will be abel triying alos to throw them don the field mnya times for the touchdown. so this for IRELAND and the coches of the MIAMI DOLPHINS before dert in the draft!

This team has no chance of really competing until 3-4 years AFTER Ireland is fired and a competent GM takes over.

Hell, because of the weirdos here, Im actually heavily weighing intentionally beginning to root against the Dolphins. Just to come here and antagonize the wierdos in their pain.

LOL...

very funny armando mentioning philly as a possible suitor for smiths talents...especially given the fact that the eagles have salery cap issues which is why they need to restructure Nnamdi Asomugha's contract or face being cap casulty....and to think they would go out and get smith 8-10 million dollars....Nice Try *lol*, Just sayin!!!

Smith leaves and the Dolphins will need to find not one, but two starting CB's. This can only be accomplished through investing a lot of money in free agency (and ignoring other needs because there is not unlimited money) or investing a very high draft pick (or more than one) on the position and hoping these 22-year-old rookies can immediately contribute--which is unlikely.

That is the reality. But I'm glad so many of you are in a great rush to see Smith depart. Very sound thinking there.

YG,

Only the dumbest of the dumb still remain Fin fans. Or the sado-masochists. HAHA

..Odin..From last night.. Screw those morphs, the little powder blue 20's are the balls. Oh, the good old days. Because I couldn't behave...bupenorphine for me.

Promicheal...I don't know if you read any of last nights blog. But we disccused Hartline and what some of us thought the team may offer. the 7-8 million dollar a year(base salary) isn't going to happen. There are 5 guys that make over 7 million in base salary next year. Thats it

Odin said that he read that Hartlines agent is asking 5-6 million per year. Again..This isn't happening. Calvin Johnson will make 5 million in base salary next year. So as much as team Hartline may want 5-6 million a year. There is no way any team on the planet is going to give him a salary with these numbers(again as a base contract. I'm not considering Bonuses)

2-3 million a year for 3 years is more then fair for Hartline. If they want to throw in a little extra as far as a bonus for last year..This would be the year to do it. So he may get rewarded with a nice little perk. But as far as his base contract goes. Hartline and his agent both know he isn't close to a 5-6 mil per year player.

We need playmakers say:

If we don't think Jonathan Martin is the answer @ LT then draft Lane Johnson @ 12.
=====================================================
Yes, if the Phins can obtain a good receiver in free agency they should go after one of the top tier OT in this years draft. Then the phins can get another good WR prospect in the 2nd round. This would be giving Tannehill some support for his 2nd year.
