I don't want to beat a dead horse here but the idea of the Dolphins using a franchise tag on Sean Smith got new life recently when CBSSports.com either reported or suggested the Dolphins were preparing to do exactly that this offseason.
The Palm Beach Post did the same in January.
I have been told it will not happen by a well-placed team source, who even mocked the suggestion to my face.
We'll see who's right.
But aside from being told it's not happening I like my chances because we're starting to see exactly what placing a franchise tag on Smith, or any cormerback for that matter, will cost. NFL.com's Albert Breer did excellent work Wednesday uncovering projections for the 2013 franchise tag numbers.
The report sates that cornerback franchise tags are expected to be the third most expensive behind only quarterback and defensive end projections. And that cornerback number is projected at a whopping $10.7 million.
Ten.
Point.
Seven.
Million.
Guaranteed.
For one year.
Believe whatever you wish about Sean Smith. I already shared with you my take on his ability and future prospects relative to a new contract. But is there any one of you that believes paying Smith $10.7 million guaranteed in 2013 is a good deal for the Dolphins?
Anyone?
(Not counting you, agent David Canter. I know you think that he's worth that much. I'm speaking to unbiased people, here.)
There is simply no way that is a good transaction for the Dolphins spending nearly one-quarter of the salary cap space the front office has worked diligently to accumulate over time on a player who is a starter, yes, but a playmaker and difference maker? No.
Franchise numbers are meant to keep top tier talent from fleeing smaller market teams for bigger market teams. It protects teams against losing the best and brightest on its roster, at least for a year or two. Players don't love the tag because it prevents them from going onto the free agent market and getting what is typically a bigger chunk of guaranteed money, albeit for more years of service.
But the problem with administering the franchise tag is it all counts toward the cap in one large Brink's truck delivery. All of it. It is a salary cap gobbler. It is a 12-cylinder engine at the gas pump. It is that Asian guy at the annual Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest. It is Salguero at a buffet.
It consumes!
That makes it unwise to use for a team trying to maximize its cap space. And it makes it borderline personnel department malpractice to use on a player whose level of play does not suggest he should be paid among the top 10 players at his position.
Is Sean Smith a top 10 cornerback in the NFL?
Maybe that other newspaper and the website think so. I don't. I've been told the Dolphins don't think so either.
What do you think?
By the way, if I'm wrong and the club does use the franchise tag on Smith, it would have repercussions. Do that, rather than signing him to a long-term deal if he's in their plans, would mean the cap hit. And that would mean less flexibility in free agency. And that would mean less talent coming to the team.
Thankfully, I'm not wrong.

"WNP,
Youre dead wong. Patterson ca come in and be as good as Hartline day one. If we sign a fa #1 wr Ptterson would play the 2.
The only thing Hartline does well is the backshoulder fade on the sidelines. Patterson's more than big and physical eough to do this well.
Hell, Patterson may even break a tacke and take a few of those to the house where Hartline could not."
YG,
This is your post right??? Maybe you should read the nonsense you write before you decide to show people that you're a complete idiot. Then again, perhaps it's from one of your other personalities....B/c there does seem to be a LOT of them.
Hartline had 74 catches for 1083 yards in 2012 so Patterson could match this a rookie right??? Over 70 catches & over 1000 yards right???

You have to be careful with some of these free agents and not overvalue them. You also have to ask why are they available. Take into account that Jennings has had all world Arron Rodgers throwing him the ball the past few years and Wallace had Big Ben. With that said, i think Bowe may not be a bad target to go after. He has been able to put up solid numbers with absolute crap throwing him the football.
He is obviously not as fast as Wallace(not many are) and is probably right on par with Jennings but he is a big bodied WR with speed. I think Bowe would be a good fit.

Again, dumbass, percieving we would sign a fa to become our #1 wr. I would rather have Patterson ver Hartline at the #2. Hartline's been a one trick pony.
Where the hell would Hartline be without the backshoulder fade play. Im pretty sure dc's in 2013 will recognize this ad have their db's overplay for that a little. Probably ending in picks.
Youre such a dumbass for a supposedly educated man. Im sure you graduated near the bottom of your class. LOL....

Chris,
If Jennings was just 'a product of the system' in GB then surely Philbin knows & understands that & won't think Jennings is worth what he's asking.
However, Philbin also stresses 'high character guys' & he knows what kind of professional he'd be getting with Jennings so that will probably play a part as well. Bowe & Wallace are bigger personality risks for Philbin since he doesn't know them.

Bobbyd12,
I heard an interesting finsider radio discussion on Sean Smith. They said earlier in the year when Smith was holding his own against the Larry Fitzgeralds, AJ Greens, he was doing by playing man press coverage. This was when he was most successful.
Then later on in the year they had him playing zone. Thats when he began to struggle in coverage. They said they noticed Smith was just fine in man up coverage, shutting down the likes of Fitz and Green, but struggled playing zone coverage.
In their opinions, if our dc allowed Smith to play man coverage the entire season he would have been much more productive in coverage. His only issue would have bee holding on to picks.
I found that conversation very interesting.

I think his love for United kept him from scoring more goals yesterday. Seriously. I don't know why the choosen one didn't keep him on the wing yesterday. Desilva was a total liablilty on the wing. Yet Renaldo was playing up the middle. That is Messi's game not Renaldo. Great header though. The second leg is going to be sweet..Can't wait!

Oscar you seemed a little obsessed with how Sean Smith covered Calvin Johnson. Problem here is you want to give him $10M based on one game! The worst players can look great for one game. Heck Chad Henne looked real good a few times right! You need to look at the whole body of work. Remember how many times are the dolphins going to play Detroit over the next 5 years!

...My guy has to be Jennings. I assume we will draft a reciever or 2 this year. I understand that Jennings has some red flags. But the fit is to perfect. Think about it. Jennings is a pros pro. He knows the system, he can be a great example for the younger guys as far as how you play in this system. Almost another teacher, by example. I get it that we don't need another coach. We need production. Well we get both.
As far as recievers in the draft. I kind of see it like the Tannehill issue last year. I am fine with the pick today. But believed there were equal if not better talents that would be available after the first round. I know there is a huge difference between the two spots. The comparison is only that we can find equal value later then round 1. IMO.

Yeah the SPL is a bit softer then the EPL. Not nearly as physical. I do enjoy watching Barcelona. They have that system perfected. And they build through their academy. Not like the Galacticos who have always been huge been high on signing the big names.(I sound so hypocritical now, as I want the Phins to go after some free agents this year..should apply to every sport) I can't think of many Madrid players on their team that are their guys..All of them were bought elsewhere.

WNP - From page 3
"He'd be a Number Two on the Niners & they're pretty good. Bear in mind that both Laurent Robinson & Robert Meachum got deals like that in FA & IMO Hartline is better than both of guys. Might sound insane but that's based on last year's contracts."
He'd be lucky to be a 3 on the 49ers. They had Crabtree, Moss, Williams, Manningham (may have been hurt) and we all remember Ginn Jr and Family. They also have AJ. Jenkins who didn't even get on the field as a rookie but we'll see him next year.
My feeling is if we go get Jennings and even if we keep hartline we need 2 WR's from this draft. Even if 1 of them doesn't play this season.
The reason I say the contract offeres for those guys around 6mil for Jennings and 8mil for Wallace) will be lower is because there are some very good WR;s coming out in the draft that will drive the cost down a bit. It is just my opinion so we will see soon enough.

The Arizona and Cincinnati games were the 2 games in 2012 where many point that show Sean Smith could cover " the big guys". He was up against Larry Fitzgerald and AJ Green in games 4 & 5 for most of their targets. Here are the numbers, according to Pro Football Focus.
In the Arizona game, Fitz had 8 receptions and was targeted 14 times. He was targeted 11 times with Smith in coverage, caught 7 with a 8.7 yd/avg gain and 0 TD (against Smith). Smith had 2 int's and 1 pass defensed (against Fitz).
In the Cincy game, Green had 9 receptions and was targeted 12 times. He was targeted 8 times with Smith in coverage, caught 5 with a 7.2 yd/avg gain and 1 TD. Smith had 0 int's and 1 pass defensed (against Green).
Not exactly a shutdown corner's work.

After listening to the finsiders, I couldnt help but think that maybe these guys are right. Food for thought for sure.
Still my eyes tell me Smith drops sure picks and has the fear of god in him when it comes to being a tackl;ing force in the run game. Seems his primary goal is to leave the plying field with his football unifor clean.
I think the coaches need to inform Smith he recieves new uniforms every game. That is mother isnt employed in the team's luandry room.

Jay,
If you draft a qb, you draft him 5th rd or later.
Problem with that, Pat Devlin's going into his 3rd season. If he's not at least as good as even a 3rd rd qb we would draft today. Then he should have been cut last season.
After speding a 1st rd pick on Tannehill last year. Its totally ridiculous to spend another 1st, or even 2nd rd ick on the position this year. It wouldnt be "COMPETITION" it would mean full blown displeasure with Tannehill.
I havent heard "ANYONE" say this about Tannehill except for a "FEW TROLLS" in this blog. LOL...

Dustin Keller, TE 4-6mil
Dannell Ellerbe, LB 5-7 mil
Dashon Goldson, FS 6-8 mil
Dwight Freeney, DE 4-6.5mil (not high on him) 2 year deal max
I think these are players that I would a willingness to sign othr than smith if they become available. I LOVE Keller and Ellerbe (Ravens and Jets are both in CAP situations and we may be able to scoop these two up) Goldson not come free and would be hard to sign with the competition he would demand. Freeney would be a great situational rushers that I think can still play 3 downs. Freeney is a luxury in my mind and would be happy with Our guys and a young flier on a mid-late pick
