The NFL Combine begins Wednesday and 331 athletes have been invited to attend the annual meat market.
The Combine will run until Feb. 26 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Take a look at the list. It is obvious this will be a defense-intense draft. The offensive talent is limited and nothing like last year, for example. Part of that is due to the fact no obvious great quarterbacks or wide receivers are on the list.
Tight ends in the first round are also hard to find. Everyone is suggesting Stanford's Zach Ertz and Notre Dame's Tyler Eifert are apparently the highest graded by the draft gurus such as Kiper, Mayock and others.
But to me, neither are worthy of a No. 12 overall pick. That is undeniable. Don't get me wrong, Ertz, who I like more than Eifert, has some skills and was actually used a lot as a slot receiver at Stanford. He has good hands. He is obviously a very aware player. But he's not a great blocker, even downfield. And he's not exactly fast.
I do believe he'd be an upgrade over what the Dolphins have. But he doesn't remind of Rob Gronkowski.
Look for yourself and then check out the list:
And now, the list. Some of these guys are future Miami Dolphins:

Get back to Dolphin talk. Free agency, etc.

....WEEEEEE The Combine. The NFL are a bunch of geniuses. Seriously. They put this out there for the benifit of the fans, which is cool. Some of you guys may even watch it. IMO to me it is a complete waste of time. I'm not an executive, a scout. So 3/4 of these exercises are like reading Japanese. Oh, that running back did the lateral cone drill in 3. whatever seconds. He must have "good hips" "good feet" What a bunch of BS..
Now all of the sudden we will have new guys shoot up draft boards because they look good in workout gear, and run a fast 40..Good for them, seriously. I just can't watch this garbage. Look I understand it is part of the process for the teams, and the players. But for the fans. IMO there has to be something better to do then watch guys "workout"

..From the previous blog..If I can chime in on the WCO. It is way more complitcated then just saying WCO teams are this or that. Go read Building of a Champion, on Football, and the Making of the San Francisco 49ers if you want a better understanding of the tenents of the WCO..I mean it comes from the mouth of Bill Walsh. I have it here in my lap. I'll share part of it to clarify.
Use the pass to set up the run
The most successful WCO team MUST run the ball well
In the Base set(2 wr's 2 rb's 1 TE) any of the 5 players can be the primary reciever
If the team gains 7-8 YPC the offense can run as little as 1 out of four run to pass plays. Otherwise the WCO calls for an equal number of pass to run plays
Throw the ball on any down and distance..
There are a bunch more..Go read them for yourselves. What this says is that there is no one way to run a WCO. There have been teams that are pass happy, like gay pride parade pass happy, and teams that ran the ball as well as any in the history of the league.(Broncos T.Davis, Ravens Jamal Lewis) Both WCO teams.
So it is ludurous to say that the WCO is 1 thing and that is it. The rules acording to Walsh. Leave it open to a lot of different styles. It is like an open ended Jazz jam. There are no rules, as long as you stay within the rules..If that makes any sense.

This may have been addressed before but what are the chances that Freeny lines up opposite of Wake this coming year? Its not the long term answer but can you imagine the year Wake has with another good pass rusher in Freeny taking away alot of his pressure?

Its not too late to fire Ireland and get a real GM before the draft.

Bye! I DON'T want you responding to me so I'm glad you'll be obeying my orders.
Posted by: stale | February 18, 2013 at 12:20 PM
DD,
The combine benifits mid to upper level stock looking to improve thier draft stock, and those that are on the fringe, to show teams athletic skillsets that otherwise these teams would have ever known they had.
It may not rocket them up he draftboards, but teams will remember them in latter rds.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | February 18, 2013 at 12:22 PM
The combine is of decreasing value as teams increasingly hold private workouts of players they are interested in. This, combined with one-on-one interviews is the real heart and soul of the drafting process.
The combine is good for reporters and fans to pretend they are gaining real insight when in truth they are not.
Posted by: david | February 18, 2013 at 12:27 PM
...Yg..No I get why they(NFL) does the combine. I was just saying personally. I get nothing from it. I don't need to break down the drills, nor do I understand what half of them are meant to accomplish as far as finding football players..I leave that to the scouts, and GM's.
As I said. I have no issue with anyone that wants to watch this. I can't do it. It is almost like a Saturday Night Live skit to me. Why anyone that has no stake in these players would watch men workout??? I'll go do something else.
Posted by: DarrylDunphy | February 18, 2013 at 12:28 PM
As for us, having 5 picks in the 1st 3 rds, we probably hope that guys we may have in our draft rifle scopes. Dont propell themselves into the 1st and 2nd rds.
If guys we have in our 2nd rd sights propell themselves into the 1st rd, thats not good for us. Same with 3rd rd'ers propelling themselves into the 2nd rd.

Darryl, 100% agreed.
There is no such thing as 'expert analysis' from fans. It is complete rubbish.
The combine is simply a conduit for them to express 'analysis' that is completely worthless and no better than throwing darts blindly.
But some actually seem to think they are gleaning important insight, so...

Ertz looks pretty good to me!

we need wide outs that dont go down when you lay a pinkie finger on them. Ive seen tomany times when our WO go down with very little contact.

..david..Good post. Exactly. WTF are we going to learn from wathing the combine? Oh..he ran a fast 40 time. Better draft him..Oh that saftey caught the ball at is't high point..Must be a ballhawk. Ireland better get him..Perhaps we can trade down in the first round for this guy because he did 40 reps at the bench press..Pretty good for a DE..
It's all information that is pointless to us. If you want to use a 40 time in the future as reference. I guess I am guilty of that. For the fans it is just the NFL giving us a little piece..Gotta get our fix. The NFL knows this..Thus the Combine on TV.

DD,
Unless you know exactly what youre looking for, the combine's a total waste of time, like you say. Even forthe socalled experts it can at times lead to sniffing up "false trails" and cause them to leave the trails of players they may have previously bee "very interested" in.
They follow the smoke, that guy bubms out, and the player they were previously interested in, they dont draft and that players goes on to have a very good pro career.
So even the socalled experts have to be very careful in out mich they take from "this combine". As they used to say:
"Is it live, or is it Memorex?"

...Have a good day fellas..Trying to finish the fishing video for Winter fishing on the Yellowstone. cool project. Lots of accomplished fishermen in this(is it even called a video anymore??) I'll call it short film.. Anyway, I get a shot at fishing on camera today. Better buck up and catch something worth putting "on tape" lol

I think it would be a mistake to believe any NFL personnell people in 2013 are heavily swayed by the combine(s). As I said, this process has evolved to where the great majority of the reearch into these players abilities and mental faculties is done privately--away from any reporter, camera, or fan.
An astoundingly good (or bad) combine performance might nudge a given player up or down but those fans that sit at home thinking all sorts of new information about unknown players is being compiled could not be more mistaken. Teams already know virtually everything about who--and where--all of them will be chosen. Or won't, as the case may be.

mando,
Agree. TE is not worth 1st round pick, nor is biggest need.
A need, yes. But not priority 1.
If there was a knock-out candidate that we'd be foolish to pass on, sure... OK, maybe we'd do that. But I don't really see one of those.
Good TEs, but not special.
I'm open to who to pick #1, but I'd still rather go DE or OLB, than WR.
Safety just isn't a 1st pick kinda thing. CB, maybe, but depends on Smith.
MLB? An upgrade would be nice, but Dansby is really pretty good when you analyze.
RB? Upgrade needed, but somehow I just don't want to spend #1 on it. I'm open to influence on that one.
WR? Needed. But do we have some real 1st round talent sitting there? My opinion, not really, and I think we can use our house money wisely and steal a nice guy around round 2-3.
QB? Well, Tannehill is supposed to be our future. I'm not sure yet, but I don't recommend rookie competition quite yet. But...damn... I would've killed for Barkley if we hadn't already blown our wad on Tanny. A little torn, but I think I'll just pass this year, and see how Tanny develops.

Thanks for the list Mando. And vid is interesting stuff. Like this kid Ertz.

Don't know why you don't like Tyler Eifert. I am not a Notre Dame fan, but this kid has the best hands among all the TEs and maybe even the WRs IMHO. There was no quit in him in that championship game. I agree he is not a #12, but if he makes it to Round 2 we should grab him.

On the subject of combines...
They are really great for comfirming a consideration, or rejecting one.
But looking for someone to jump out and start your list... not a good idea. Otherwise we can skip college and even high school ball and just find the biggest fastest guys around, and hope they can play.
Me personally, if I'm drafting I go primarily on game film, and then look for details like 40's, or jumps, or whatever to separate close candidates.

The combine's "part of the evaluation process". Its not the chief indicator of talent itself.
A guy benching 50 reps doesnt tell you he has sound blocking or tackling technique. A guy runninga 4.3 forty doesnt tell you he has lateral speed or quickness. Doesnt even tell you that he can run routes, get in and out of his breaks well, get off of press coverage, or consistently catch the football.
Its doesnt tell if as a db he covers well, uses proper technique(consistently), or tackles well.
There's a lot the combine really cant tell you about a player. Therefore its very wise not to make combine results alone a chief part of your player evaluation process. There's also the the mental process of the evaluation and technique part of it.
Just so much more than combine results alone. Although they can be physically helpful in making an examination of that player.

I think the combine is mainly used to see a guys 40 time or how strong a lineman may be. It's aslo interesting lately that it's a character guage if someone doesn't show up.

swivle hips.
lmao

The results from the combine should still be weighted much more heavily on football smarts and playing ability. Just remember Vernon Gholston for the Jets. Unbelievable combine results, zero playing capability.
I believe the smart GM's will utilize their "gut feel" more that the statistics show. Listening to me Jeffie baby?
Posted by: DolphinLover | February 18, 2013 at 01:28 PM
Dolpin Lover,
Agree... I hope that Ireland uses smart GMs gut feelings too.
Who those smart GMs are, I don't know, but I hope he uses them ;)

ALL RIGHT THE COMBINE IS ONE WEEK FORM NOW!!!!. Please

Ertz makes some decent grabs but he's so slow it's like he's running through sand.

Once the Fins sign one of the big ticket Free agent WR's , our biggest offensive need heading into the draft will be OL and TE, assuming they are not addressed in FA. Draft Ertz or Eifert at #12 with the pick.
Fins scored 0 points the last game of the season. The NFL is a scoring league. Cornerbacks don't score points, linebackers and linemen don't score points. #1 offseason need, find play makers who SCORE POINTS!....
These 2 the top 2 TE's clearly who are 1st round players. Everyone knows they are gone by the 2nd round. Take Ertz, great pick, the right pick

Was watching highlights from last year. MAN our offense was efficient! Do really wish we could have kept JF for one more year. Stephen Morris flourished under his coaching, I hope Coley can take it to the next level! Hope we keep it going!
