« Good-bye Milliner but Banks in Dolphins wheelhouse | Main | Reggie Bush to Lions a possibility »

The official 40 times for the defensive backs

You saw what the unofficial times were for the defensive backs in the last post. Now for the official combine 40-yard dash times for the defensive backs:

Cornerbacks:

Johnthan Banks, Miss. St. 4.61

Dee Milliner, Alabama      4.37

Brandon McGee, UM         4.40

Tyrann Mathieu, LSU       4.50

Terry Hawthorne, Ill.      4.44

Sanders Commings UGA   4.41

David Amerson, NC ST.    4.44

Robert Alford, So. La.     4.39

Johnny Adams, Mich. St. 4.48

Xavier Rhodes, FSU         4.43

Darius Slay, Miss. St.       4.36

Jamar Taylor, Boise St.   4.39

Desmond Trufant, Wash.  4.38

Steve Williams, Cal.        4.42

Safeties

Matt Elam, UF               4.54

Eric Reid, LSU               4.53

Kenny Vaccaro, Tex.      4.63

Shamarko Thomas, Syr.  4.42

Earl Wolff, NC. St.         4.44

You'll notice the official times vary from the unofficial times. Indeed, the unofficial numbers were supplied to the NFL Network, which is inside the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, by former NFL GM Charley Casserly. Those are his hand times.

The official times are the ones that count. And the numbers above are the fastest a player posted.

Now, you are aware I'm not a huge fan of 40-yard dast times relative to a player's ability to actually play football. I want football players, not track stars.

But as defensive backs must show speed and quickness, these times are quite relevant to the job. Speed is one of the critical factors for a defensive back, as are ball skills, hands, durability, etc ...

That and the fact the Dolphins are likely to need a defensive back in the draft and need him relatively early enough so that he has a chance to start, I'm posting these players and their times whereas I didn't do that for other positions.

I'd say Vaccaro's time, and in fact his entire day, was something of a disappointment because he wasn't exactly smooth in other drills, either.

Rhodes didn't hurt himself. Banks didn't help himself and there are now questions about him. Both are still top of the second round type guys, in my opinion.

The guys that ran exceedingly fast or the ones that disappointed will cause teams to go back and re-study their tape. Banks is in that group, as are Slay, Vaccaro, Williams and Trufant -- for different reasons, of course.

YG,
Totally agree. Except go back and watch Vaccaro's drills if you can. Awkward, little wrong footed, and sluggish at times.

Just seemed like a guy who may be more suited to nickel or dime specialty as an assasin rather than an every down safety.

Most tend to forget we have a PS...and it's full of goodies.

Dashi's really cruel in his ratings. Had Te'o run a 4.4 40, he's back in top 5 consideration. That's cb speed.

A 4.5 makes him a solid top 10 pick. 4.6 makes him a solid top 20 pick. 4.7, bottom 1st rd(25-32).

A 4.8 40? Probably knocks him out of 1st rd. Exactly why Raven hc Harbaugh gasped in disgust at Te'os 4.8 time. Ravens have the 32nd and last pick of the 1st rd. Even a 4.75 keeps Te'o in the 1st rd.

But if a team is desperate, some team may reach for him near the back of the first rd. But the 4.8 40 shows he more 2nd rd than 1st rd material.

Again, use caution evaluating these Combine performances. They might not be putting all out until their proDay or private workout.

IMO, just proves Vaccaro isnt a track guy or lab rat. He was once projected at #12 to us. To me this suggests the guy just showed up as a real football player during his Texas career.

I would trust that because on tape he shows he's smart and takes the right angles.

He still has a chance to redeem himself on his Texas pro day. If he does, he'll jump back into the conversation as a very strong #12 consideration. That, I'll keep an eye on that.

Teo also has a chance to redeem himself at Notre Dame's pro day. He gets his 40 tme down to 4.7, he's back into the bottom 1st rd.

Ah, well. I knew odin couldn't possibly get through an afternoon of posting without at least one allusion to gay sex.

In all seriousness, what IS the deal with that? You certainly seem to have some kind of fixation with it.

Mark,

That Is All Dashi Is Saying!! These Guys Aren't Grading Out! Like Jake Or J.Thomas!!

They Are Good Prospects Not Great!! In A Weak Draft!!

Posted by: Dashi™ | February 26, 2013 at 04:51 PM

You need to look at the numbers. The only thing Jake Long has on anybody in this draft and Khalil, Joe Thomas is his bench press. Bench btw, is not a great indicator for how strong a lineman is. Lower body strength is more important, broad jump and vertical jump show this more than anything.
If you put Joeckel's numbers next to Long, Long is better but only slightly. Joe Thomas has better numbers than Long in every category but bench press. Lane Johnson has better numbers than Joe Thomas but they are equal in the bench.
Fisher's numbers are better than Longs and Compare well with what Joe Thomas and Matt Khalil did.

YG,
Proves nothing either way.
I'm just saying I'm less inclined to buy him as a stud safety worthy of a 1st round pick, rather than a good asset that can be had a little later.

I was never super impressed with Vaccaro, but I assumed his stock was legit from the hype.

So, I'm not buying the hype.

Elam is just plain better, but a longshot in my book. And he's not even projected 1st round.

...BY a long shot.

Ah, well. I knew odin couldn't possibly get through an afternoon of posting without at least one allusion to gay sex.

In all seriousness, what IS the deal with that? You certainly seem to have some kind of fixation with it.

Huh? When and where did I supposedly do that?

Oh, I get it, Troll Bu-oy stoops to outright lies. It's OK, it what one would expect from Common Trash! Carry on.

Have you taken a look at Vaccaro's film at Texas, JS? Do, and let me know what you think about him.

I'll try oscar, but I don't have that length of time at once to chew up. Lots of little breaks while I wait for stuff to load, or run...

But I'll try

Bench Numbers at the combine:
Jake Long : 37
Joe Thomas: 28
Matt Khalil: 30
Ryan Clady: 24

This years top 3:
Joeckel: 27
Eric Fisher: 27
Lane Johnson: 28

You were saying Dashi?

JSLA,

Ive never been a safety 1st rd of this draft fan either. Its just not a top priority this season. Here' my 2013 mock I posted weeks ago:

TradeBack pick up an extra 2nd rd'er, then,

1 Deandre Hopkins
2a Tyler Eiffert
2b Stedman Bailey *Change to DJ Fluker
2c. Kenny Vaccaro or Matt Elam
3a DJ Fluker *Change to Stedman Bailey
3b David Amerson
4 Stephon Jefferson rb
6. Tyrann Matthieu
7. A fg kicker

Huh? When and where did I supposedly do that?

Oh, I get it, Troll Bu-oy stoops to outright lies. It's OK, it what one would expect from Common Trash! Carry on.

Your short-term memory can't possibly be THAT bad:

You must like the taste of your feet, you keep sticking them in your mouth. My guess is you just like sticking things in your mouth, to each his own, as I always say.

Posted by: odinseye | February 26, 2013 at 05:00 PM

-------------------------------------------------

I guess you'll claim allusions to a guy 'sticking things in his mouth' is not yet ANOTHER of your endless references to gay sex, right?

No sale on that. Sorry.

I also like the exciting O, YG, but I just can' find any Gamechangers among WRs or TEs this year.

YG,
I do think it's a priority, but 1st round talent is supposed to be your franchise talent, and I've never seen a franchise safety. Great ones yes, but just doesn't seem right.

Your list isn't bad.
Bailey has kind of fallen off my board. He's fine, but I think there's better fish in that sea especially rounds 2 and 3.

No idea who Jefferson is, sorry. And if we don't have a power runner available somewhere, then we certainly have enough backs for our roster already.

But I'd be willing to wager that your list beats whatever Ireland gives us.

APPLY CHICKEN OINTMENT TO EXTREMITIES! THROW PANCAKE AT ELDERLY CHINESE WOMAN! LICK OWL!

YG, I don't see Amerson getting past Rd 2 and Fluker seems too big and slow to fit our zone scheme.Otherwise, not bad.

For Oscar...and anyone else who cares ----
I'm not calling this thorough research by any stretch, but figured I'd give you at least something...
On Vaccaro.
I only got a few minutes of one of his games in, but a few thing are very obvious.

He plays like a LB. VERY aggressive, quick, and tries to hit hard, and go for the big play. He commits exceptionally early, and either blows the play up, or comepletely whiffs and gets torched.

He's usually going forward, and that makes big plays, but gets him beaten ugly sometimes. He guesses a lot, and again it's dangerous for both sides.

His tackling is sloppy, but he does get there first often. Open field tackling looks bad. But if he gets the right angle, then he knocks folks down.

***
so far, i think I like him excatly where I said: as a nickel or dime assassin.
Reminds me a lot of Matthieu, but bigger and stronger.

I could easily catch talking sh-t out of your mouth, JS. How do you know Elam is "much better" than Vaccaro is if you have not watched the latter'tapes?

We want no Amateurs around here. Right, YG?

YG,

Dashi Has Always Said I Have A High Standard!! This Is Football! You Should See How I Talk About Spo And The Heat!!

Perfection Is Expected!

I'm a Harsh Critic!!

For Me To Call Somebody Good! They Really Have To Be Good!!

Very Rarely Does Dashi Use The Term Great!!

Oscar, I study some players, and look at others.

I've only looked at Vaccaro.
I've studied Elam.

Sorry this disagrees with you, but ignore me as you like.

I'm not getting paid for this.
And I can recall once or twice some opinions from you that had little foundation or accountability.

Cast not a stone, sir...

I guess you'll claim allusions to a guy 'sticking things in his mouth' is not yet ANOTHER of your endless references to gay sex, right?

OMG, your a H O M O P H O B E as well as a Liar, as well as Stoopid, as well as.......

I don't have time to go down THAT path, it's a long and ugly one.

You are an unmitigated Twit. I was refering to how many times you have put your foot in your mouth. EVERYBODY here sees it everyday, all day long.

You just have a knack for it, simple as that.

Now, a bit of advice. Being that it's painfully obvious how much you worry about your "Little Secret" getting out, try sticking to Football Talk(like I have been). Then you wouldn't have to worry-Sheesh.

It's 2012 anyways, what are you worried about? You must be one of those that have trouble coming to grips with........I dunno........your TRUE feelings?

Who cares? Jump out of that closet and into the 21st Century for God's Sake! To Each Their Own I Always Say.

By your description of Vaccaros play, YG and I can tell you have not watched 1 sec of the guy's film, JS. Getttoutahere.

Will even 20,000 show up at Dullfin games next year?

Like I said oscar, ignore me as you like.

odin, how many gays are on the Dolphins?

Hey, Armando, get rid of these fake posters here.We are supposed to be here the Best of the Best.

WG,

You Just Answered My Question!

Look At The Disparity!! Jake Is At Least 10 Reps Better Than Any Of These Guys!!

And Just Like You Said! Don't Just Judge The Combine!!

Check The Awards! Check The Play!! J.Thomas And Jake Came Into The NFL More Decorated Than A War Veteran!! Jake Was The Best Tackle In College For At Least His Last 2 Years!!

These Scrubs Are Going To Get Drafted High! Because This Is A Weak Draft!!

Will You Start Any Of These Tackles Over J.Martin?

Dashi Wouldn't!!

Definitely Not Over Jake!!

And I can recall once or twice some opinions from you that had little foundation or accountability.

Cast not a stone, sir...

Wow! Good Answer!

We have to get by with whatever we can get when it comes to player evaluations. I would kill for some "Insider Reports" and Coaches "Tapes".

Same with these Free Agent contract negotiations. Both, our own players and other teams players. What I wouldn't give to sit in on some of Philbin and Ireland's conversations. Or to just simply know the numbers being thrown around in regard to contract sizes!

Uuuuuuuuuuuuugh!!!!

FSU CB #27 X. RHODES (2ND RD)
UL CB #21 A. BUSHELL (4TH RD OR 5TH RD).
RESIGN CB #32 D. PATTERSON. NCST CB #13 D. AMERSON WOULD BE A GOOD SAFETY.

odin, how many gays are on the Dolphins?

Thats not what I really had in mind, but it's better. At least you mentioned the Team.

And your "Sign-In Name", I'll bet Frued would have a "Little Something(snicker, snicker)" to say about that-lol.

We Know ;)

go finsssssssssssss heres to not letting pointless combine numbers affect our draft

Wouldn't be surprised if JS, odin and YG are the same person. They all talk the same sh-t, sometimes. Besides, more cost effective, right, Armando?

Thanks Odin.

If I was actually any good at this evaluation thing, I'd have a job doing it.

But I'm as bad as Ireland so, a weekend novice I remain. ;)

But IF I had all that information at my disposal, I'd probably waste my time looking at all of it. God knows why - I have no control over anything. But we all act like somehow we do.

Perhaps I need a better hobby. Like Self mutilation.

Armando for Dolphin GM!

WG,

Amerson Look good at The Combine! But 2 Games Which Make Me Not Like Him! Is The UM Game And The FSU Game!!

The UM Game! From The First Play!! The UM Wr's Were Just Running By Him!! 2 Of TD's! Amerson Didn't Move!! Literally!! He Was Stuck!! It Looked Like That Play Against STL! When Moore Just Ran By The Guy Wide Open!! Or Like The Jets! When Sanchez Overthrew The Guy! Who Just Froze S.Smith!! And His FSU Game Was The Same!! Or Was It Clemson? Either Or! Anderson Got Burned This Whole Year!!

Other than That!! Amerson Looked Great!! Plus The Guy Is A Ball Hawk!! Which We Need!!

On The Safety's?

Resign Clemons At The Right Price(2-3yrs)!! And Draft 1, Where His Value Is The Highest! Late 2nd, Early 3rd!!

odin,
They would not let you within 20 miles of those conversations, just by your looks.

JS,

Do you Record/DVR any college games during the Season?

I record tons and tons of games. I always get the Senior Bowl, The East-West Shrine and All the regular bowl games as well-lol.

I don't know how old you are, but man the technology today comes in handy for us Junkies! I can remember when all we had was a few magazines to cover an entire off season.

These are Good Times to be living in!

Odin's 'Dashi' character slipped up badly recently when he referred to someone as 'monkey boy' under that name. Oops!

It's so painfully obvious he's both. But that's not the sad part. The sad part is that he felt the need to CREATE an internet 'friend' because he has so few here.

Actually, scratch the 'sad' part. It's freaking hilarious!

I know the 40 gets a lot of pub here but if you want to talk playmakers, Da'Rick Rogers came out flying in the cone, shuttle, broad jump, and vertical jump finishing in the top 10 in all players in each category.

In the 2nd round I don't care as much for character concerns - I would take a chance on this guy. Especially with his production .. 6'2, 217 lbs, superb athlete.

I saw it too Mark. Weak draft, I'd take the chance. Probably won't happen with Ireland/Philbin but still....

...Mark in Toronto...I'm laughing pretty hard right now. We all thought we were watching that replay live. No sound...anyway. FU9%K I can't believe it. We waited all weekend all fired up to watch the game...I feel like freekin dumbazzz..I gues I"ll watch the second leg next week and tell everyone how great it was....

damn...

Dashi and Odindouche = same person

Go away, man. We want no suicidals here.

Odin,
I wish I had more time, but I record only the Gator games.
I do watch 4-5 games on Saturdays usually, some intermittent, more SEC tna others.
And I once I get a player on my radar I tend to concentrate a little too much on watching them.

The ones that I learn about later I go on Youtube and watch a few of their games (faster that way). I rarely look at highlights unless it's just to see what the guy is about first. But never as an evaluation tool.

And the reason i do this... I have no idea. I'm a football and draft nerd.

But if someone pops out at me during a game, and isn't on everybody else's list, it doesn;t matter, I'll make him on mine.
I read Kiper and Mayock and McShay etc., mainly for reference, but I don't trust their opinions on diddly.

there, that's about it.
My wife and kids insist on watching other things besides football - so, I'll keep my novice standing for a while.
:)

Oh yeah, almost forgot Odin, I actually watch those High School bowls, and some occasional big HS games. I'm noticing I'm getting way too nerdy if I'm reaching fro talent in the HS ranks, but there ya go.

And yeah, I watch senior bowls sometimes, and I actaully love those ESPN skills challenge shows. And even Gruden's show.

God, I need to stop, don't I?

yes js u do. get out some. watching those games doesnt give u anymore insight than anyone else

Wouldn't be surprised if JS, odin and YG are the same person. They all talk the same sh-t, sometimes.

Speak for yourself Grease Ball.

At training camp they let me get close enough to Shula to get my Arm Around him while my Girlfriend snapped a picture.

I had it blown up that night. Then the next day he autographed iot for me, while my girlfriend took another picture of that, of course.

I believe it's called Provenance?

I paid through the nose to have it framed and I display it proudly too this day.

(I also got him to sign a 1989 Pro-Set Don Shula "Rookie Card". My Girlfriend photographed that signing as well. ((I think it was "89", it could have been the "90" sets. Either way, they were so over produced it was sickening. But to have Shula's signature, it's VALUABLE too me)

My family was friends with Bob Matheson and I ate lunch with the team (and Shula) MANY times years ago.

Your story pales in comparison.

So did the Honey Badger really only bench 4 reps? The guy has had all the time in the world to prepare for the combine, and that's all he does? Got to question his commitment. I mean you know what the Combine drills are, wouldn't you attempt to excel at all the ones you're position will run?

Lets see..........

Monkey Bu-oy interupts pure football conversations to accuse others of doing what it is, HE does-PRICELESS.

Then he FALSELY accuses me of "Gay-Talk", when it was he, who started that up as well.

Then he accuses me of using fake names(which, we all know, is what HE does).

Then he starts talking about "My Looks(WTF-LOL?)."

But if you ask him, it always ME, picking on HIM!

Reminds me of that Kid that use to get the Lunch Money beat out of him everyday at school. Not because he was little or had alot money. Simply because he was a whinny little sniveling Be-Atch that DESERVED to have the Lunch Money beat out of him.

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaa!!!!

(What'cha gonna do now? Tell the Principal(Armando)on me?)

Oscar, I believe YG may just have a heart attack and explode if he actually thought ANYONE thought I was him (or her, I don't know YG's gender).

Probably same for Odin and YG.

However, I've always posted with the same account which is easily accesible to research if anyone was a lunatic stalker. Just so I can "real" for you appreciative guys, and not an anonymous troll.

***
well since the conversation has turned to whose opinions are not good enough for other people, I'll head out.

Later gents.

God, what a nitwit. He thinks there's ONE person here making fun of him??

Christ, most of this board thinks the guy is a complete asswipe.

Odin's 'Dashi' character slipped up badly recently when he referred to someone as 'monkey boy' under that name. Oops!

Many - MANY posters here use the nicknames I have come up with for you. Mainly, I suspect, because they're so fitting.

So, you think that everybody that refers to you as TrollTard, GayTard, Rainbow Room Queenie, MethHead and JakWad are ALL me?

You WISH - LOL! No my Friend, they see right through you just like I do. Keep it coming though Inbred Bu-oy, your StooPidity is Hilarious.

(PS: Watchout Guys, don't call Troll Tard "Inbred Bu-oy" or he'll think you're me(snicker, snick...)

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

They say imitation is the Highest Form of Flattery. But in Monkey Bu-oy's case, it just plain dumb. The Guy can't even think for himself.
