Vontae Davis gets Sean Smith, self in hot water

We all know Sean Smith is eager to test the free agent market. He's going to have suitors.

But none of the contact that will happen starting March 9 when pending free agents are allowed to speak with all clubs is supposed to be happening yet. If it is happening, it is tampering.

That, of course, happens all the time but is rarely proven.

Well, if you believe former Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, there is tampering afoot relative to Sean Smith.

"I seen my dude Sean Smith last night he said he talking to KC him & B Flowers will makes (sic) a good Duo," Davis tweeted in the last 20 minutes.

It suggests Smith is talking to an NFL team when he shouldn't be -- specifically the Kansas City Chiefs. It is coming from a close -- albeit ridiculously dumb -- friend of the Dolphins cornerback. And a storm could be on the way over the matter if the NFL chooses to pursue it.

For the record, I tweeted agent David Canter, who represents Smith, to see if the tampering allegation is true.

"Don’t believe everything players tell you Armando. Rule number 1 of football journalism," he replied.

Well, I think I'm pretty versed in journalism and that isn't Rule 1. Rule 1 is get it straight from the horse's mouth and get it on the record.

This comes from Davis's mouth as his account is verified. And I believe he simply slipped. That's neither here nor there. So I asked Canter if he is saying Davis is lying?

"I say clients haven’t ever spoken to teams prior to free agency so his statement isn’t true," Canter replied.

I believe Canter. I believe Sean Smith probably hasn't spoken to the Chiefs. But notice he didn't say he hadn't spoken to the Chiefs on Smith's behalf.

Here's an interesting twist: Moments after I retweeted Davis's tweet and sought out Canter, the former Dolphins cornerback tweeted that his account had been hacked.

"My Twitter was Hack I did not see Sean Smith last night!!" he wrote in his own inimitable style for the language.

That's possible. And it's also possible Davis is doing damage control because he was informed he'd just uncovered his good friend.

I will be seeking comment from the Dolphins on this matter. They probably will have none. They are, however, aware of the issue.

[Update: The Miami Dolphins have no comment.]

[Update: Smith denied on twitter he met with the Chiefs. "Whoa, no I didn't."  he tweeted. Then he added: "OK, this is getting out of hand. I've never talked to any other team besides the Miami Dolphins."]

[Update: Smith also said he did speak with former Dolphins coach now KC DB coach Al Harris recently and told Davis about that and that Davis misunderstood somehow that it meant Smith is talking to the Chiefs.]

[Update: The Chiefs have no comment.]

Again, the denials never mention whether Smith's agent talked to the Chiefs.

The NFL has no comment but it does, according to Herald beat reporter Adam Beasley, investigate allegations of tampering, regardless of whether the offended team files a complaint or not. The NFL does prefer a complaint be filled.

Meanwhile, Davis comes off as initially transparent but not necessarily intelligent relative to outing his friend and then his backtracking.

[Update: Smith now is basically conceding that Davis lied about having his account hacked. "He panicked ... Not the best idea but I appreciate it tho."]

[Update: And now Sean Smith has blocked me on twitter. These guys are brilliant.]

Canter has a spill he has to clean up.

And now we shall wait to see if Sean Smith signs eventually with the Kansas City Chiefs or perhaps the Philadelphia Eagles, with whom Canter met (for undisclosed reasons) during the Indianapolis combine.

Giants re-signed LT Will Beatty to a five-year, $38.75 million deal.
T"he deal includes a $12.5 million signing bonus, and $19 million guaranteed. It's a nice haul for a player who finally stayed healthy last season after missing 14 combined games between 2010-11. Three days shy of his 28th birthday, Beatty allowed just three sacks and 22 hurries in 967 snaps last season. He was never expected to reach free agency."

If anyone here thinks Long is going to take less than $50 Million/5yrs. w/ $25 Million of that guaranteed--you're hallucinating.

"Free agent Martellus Bennett says he's not "feeling the love" from the Giants.
"They have other priorities that come before little ole me," Bennett said. "I’m just a small piece of what they’re trying to do there." The Giants could be turning their attention toward Bennett now that they've locked up LT Will Beatty. The Giants are believed to want Bennett back, but he'll be angling for every dollar coming off a breakout campaign."

How about this guy??? He's coming off a good season & he'd certainly be an upgrade.

My conspiracy mind thinks Smith's agent 'hacked' into Vontae's twitter account (or at least got him drunk enough to write stupid sh_t) and mentioned KC to increase Smith's stock. That's how I would do it if I were an agent.

KC can have him. with him and A.smith that team will be a joke. Glad not to be a chiefs fan.

All this laughing about Vontae and Sean and we drafted both of them. How smart are we?

Oh well lots of them out there. Williams, Cox, Cromartie, Grimes to name a few and as we've seen from the combine there may be some good ones in the draft as well.

Nobody can prosecute nobody for a statement made on Internet, Armando. Could be true, could be false...could be hacked. No possible way to know. Take your meds.

Speaking of delusional....Have you listened to what Ireland said in late January;
1) "Jerry has a big arrow up on his future."
2) On Egnew "I have a high regard for him. He's gonna have a good season this year, I feel real confident about it."
3) Daniel Thomas will be a "fine player."

Because I KNOW exatly what is going to happen in the future

What's this 'we' crap??? No one asked me what I thought. I wanted Clay Matthews or Hakeem Nicks.

If we can't get Wallace or Jennings, Ireland MUST spend money on a CB not named Smith. Assuming our FA's leave our depth @ WR, CB, TE, & Safety has to be the worst in the NFL.

Vontae when you are dumber than a rock you should either always tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may or just keep your big mouth shut....your Granny

haha, today is SS's worst nightmare. Look at those updates!

WNP, I would certainly look at Bennett in free agency. I don't really like these guys in the draft. Eifert looks the best coming out of the combine save for Kelce's pro day because he couldn't do anything in Indy. And I would really hate to use a first on Eifert. And I want no part of Ertz. Free agency is a lot better IMO.

Posted by: We Need Playmakers | February 27, 2013 at 03:51 PM

Ok WNP's had nothing to do with the drafting of Davis and Smith..lol

I actually thought Vontae was a good pick (at the time). I'll also admit that I had never heard of Smith.

Hopefully in a few more weeks some of this stuff we'll be more clear. Actually didn't Ireland say he hoped to have our own fa's signed by next week?

Dashi Has Seen The Light. First, Phins78 Made The Comment Today. And Now Vontae Verifies It!!

Dashi Is Dropping The "!!" Shtick For The Foreseeable Future. Vontae Is Making Dashi Look Bad. From Now On Dashi Is Going Back To Normal. Only Will Use !! When Need Be.

Actually, I find this whole 'story' to be pretty boring and inconsequential. But it's the offseason and people are bored, I guess.

tiredfinfan, they may be busts to you, naturally you're a Phin fan, but they hare highly thought of in the open market. Imagine that.

Can somebody please tell me how many school football programs, college football programs, and super bowl winners this guy using the handle Yesterdays Gone4Ever has been directly responsible for building?

he seems to know a lot of great football knowledge around here!

Yes, you've already mentioned that 2-3 times today. It's really not that compelling an issue.

But at least what you write won't read like gibberish anymore.

I hope, hope, hope they get rid of Sean Smith. When he is on the field the opposing quarterback has an interception free zone he can throw into. That is why Smiths area is the most targeted in Dolphin games. As long as Smith remains on the team, we will not have a play maker at corner back, and we badly need one.

Rick, the Phins don't have to get rid of Smith, he's a free agent. You would make a great GM.

Which two new starting CB's will be playing for Miami that will be clear upgrades and up to the task of handling Tom Brady?

Smith goes, and that's exactly the scenario.

Name actual players--not hypotheticals--and tell me how the position will be improved in 2013. "Anyone" is not an answer. REAL names.

Thanks in advance.

I See You Are Still Throwing Rocks At The R.Woods Argument. To Each His Own. Just Saying, Name 1 Wr More Polished And NFL Ready? Woods Already Knows The WCO.

And To The Blog Guru,

If Vontae Doesn't Prove to You That College Education Is Overrated. I Don't Know What Does?

F.Gore Was A Special Needs Student At Coral Gables High. I Went To School With A Couple Of Guys That Went To UM. And Those Guys Weren't The Smartest In The Bunch. Matter Of Fact They Didn't Even Go To Class. Stayed At The Field house all day.

Higher Learning Means Something Different To Athlete's. At Least The Good Ones.

Look At Johnny Football!! Boy Wonder Is The White Version Of Vontae. College Athlete And He Is Taking All His Classes Online. We All Know He Isn't Going To Class. Johnny has somebody Taking All His Classes.

Rick, the Phins don't have to get rid of Smith, he's a free agent. You would make a great GM.

Posted by: mike | February 27, 2013 at 04:36 PM

Prove It!!!

Go who cares we stunk with Smith and Davis so move on see yah!

Dolphins are talking with FA WRs right now so everyone is tampering, how do you think GMs decide who to franchise and agents know if to accept a deal or not?

I hope Fins are tampering with FA TEs also, draft stock looks weak and Eifert would be a reach at 12.
At 12 I would love it if these guys are around, in this order:
-Warmack - a total beast who cares if he's a guard?
-Dion Jordan - a young JT
-Milliner - shutdown corner type.
-Werner - Pair him with Wake, Brady would worry.

In 2nd round:
-CB Trufant looks like the goods
-one of many WRs that will be there(love R.Woods)
-Ogletree if he drops this far

Look Back Buddy. You Posted All Night!! Til 7am!!

What Did You Do With Your 5-hr Energy Bump?

Post All Night and All Day!!

Sean Smith told Vonte Davis that he talked with the Chiefs. Can you now blame David Canter for having Smith block Armando on twitter?

Smith and Davis are two dumb peas in the same pod. Having Smith block Armando equates to his agent David Canter putting a muzzle on dumbass Sean Smith.

After today I wouldnt resign Sean Smith to an undrafted rookie free agent contract. I wouldnt resign him if he agreed to play for jailhouse bologna sandwiches.

What happens is they tag Smith, trade him, get a deal done and restructure the tag number. Its happened before if im not mistaken.

Twitter are for Pus$ies!!

"I wish I could be you so i could then be Friends with me"

Becuase arguing with these jokers can be boring!!!

To Everyone Except The A S S Clown!! Dashi Is Toning It Down.

Agreed On The Mando Post. Mando Has Been doing A Great Job Lately.better Than Last year.

Blogger Beware

Facts and Reasons may appear without warning!!!

How immature are these two guys? And where are the guys again that complained about us trading VD? Where are the guys that wanted Smith back?

They're kids....is it any wonder they can't perform consistently on the field. They've got the maturity of a five year old. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the two of them have been making comments here on the blog under some of the troll names that go around.

Do they come any dumber than V. Davis... well i guess the ones who drafted him can be up for debate on that one. dumb, immature.. and just ok as a player considering he was a #1 pick. and what did they get in return a 2nd pick for him?

S. Smith??? he isn't any better of a player. i mean if miami can get some kind of compensation for a player i say let him go, why not. this dude will get FAT once he gets paid and he suck anyways!

If you're still around, whta teams do you see the Chiefs beating out that made the playoffs this year. Just curious. Can we please not turn this into WWIII. You made the comment that you 'wouldn't be surprised to see the Chiefs make the playoffs next year'. I see a very flawed team. So who do they pass this year to make the playoffs. I'm assuming you don't see them beating Denver for the division, so you have them winning a WC. Who misses out, cause I just don't see it.

Why not Ertz? To me he is better than Coby Fleener. I've watched several Stanford games and the guy has amazing hands and has a high football IQ.

vonate better call his grandma

I agree with you. I don't get Mark's dislike for Ertz and Eiffert. I believe he's looking for more of an athletic TE and I understand that. Reed for Florida doesn't impress me and some of the other guys have question marks. If we can get a TE in the second, I do it in a heartbeat. There are no sure things but I'm tired of picking TEs in the third round and after. Never seems to work out.

Posted by: Craig M | February 27, 2013 at 05:36 PM

Its not a lock that the same 2 teams are make the wuldcard 2 consecutive seasons.

Who would have thought the Steelers wouldnt it make it? Who would have thought that the Colts would have made the playoffs?

Again, I stated I would not be surprised if the Chiefs mde the playoffs this year. Theyve already made 2 of the best offseason moves. Hiring Andy Reid and upgrading their startung qb position.

"Right now" they have a great headstart on everybody.

I can see the athletisicm point of view; however, I still think that we need to stop drafting 'athletes' and get football players. I'll go with Charles Davis comment during the combine: I'll trust the tape more than the drills and measurements.
In any case, with so many options, some fans will go dissapointed as we won't sign Long, Bush, Hartline, Wallace AND draft the players high on the list. Philbin & Ireland will have to make some tough choices and let's hope we get it right whichever way we go.

craig m....

doesn't matter if they r kids or not..they r very good players...THAT'S WHAT COUNT ....

I Have New Names For Oscar And YG. (Sorry, YG)

Vontae And S.Smith.

These 2 Swear They Are The Best Thing That Happened To This Blog!!

Remember Dashi Is Dan Marino.

You Got That Jizzle & Spittle!!

I Mean Vontae And S.Smith.

See that's where we disagree, YG. I don't rate Smith that highly, and I'm starting to wonder about Reid. They're going to use their first overall pick for a LT to replace Albert, so a tradeoff. They're going to use $11 mil to franchise Bowe. I don't have Smith as being much better than Cassell. No second round pick now. So HOW are they getting better.

This was a 2-14 team this year. They were 2-14 for a reason. Now don't use the Colts of this year argument with me. Smith is nowhere near the QB Andrew Luck is and the Colts had a very good draft.

So who are they beating out? The Bengals? I don't think so. The Ravens? Don't see it. Colts. I highly doubt it with $40+mil in cap space. I'm just not seeing it man. I actually think they made a dumb trade today. But time will tell....

Who are you referring to?

Couple of blogs back we were discussing RBs and forgot to throw M Lattimore into the discussion. Is the injury scary enough to not even consider him? Could be a steal in second day rounds.

If I May. The Chiefs Will Be Better Than The Ravens. But They Still Won't Make The Playoffs!

The Fins Will Make The Playoff's!!

Write It Down!!

Not Going To Guarantee Until After The Draft. After The 2nd Round.

If The Fins, Better Said, If Ireland Doesn't Do His Job! Expect Total Anarchy On Here After The 2nd Round Of The Draft.

Dashi Believes Even Me and You, Will Jump Off The Ireland Wagon.

March 9th Is An Important Day! So says Ireland. So We Are Less Than 2 Weeks From Finding Out How Things Are Going To Start Looking.

Posted by: Craig M | February 27, 2013 at 06:00 PM

CraigM, you call this a dumb trade yet copntinue to defend Jeff Ireland.

The Chiefs gave a 2nd and conditional 3rd pick for a starting qb.

Ireland Gave 2 2nd rd picks for Brandon Marshall, who he had to ship out after only two seasons.

Yet Im sure you would fire the Chiefs gm for getting a better deal.

Give dashi a break.

Dashi's mother was standing a couple feet behind Vonte's mother in a radiation spill zone in their pregnacies.

Dashi and Vonte are the exact same age, a few monts apart.

I'll tell you who is dumb, the Colts giving us a 2nd rounder for Vontae Davis.

For those who are knocking Miami when we drafted them, guess all college kids are a little immature. But when you get to the big leagues you have to mature work hard and want to be the best. A Jerry Rice work ethic. These clowns never changed. Good ridence to both!!
