Bowe deal helps set wide receiver market quite high

The wide receiver market is apparently set.

It happened Monday when the Kansas City Chiefs signed Dwayne Bowe to a contract that profootballtalk.com reports is worth $56 million over five years. That's an $11.2 million per season average and that includes $26 million in guaranteed money.

That's now the starting point for a top 5 receiver considered to be a team's No. 1 pass option.

It is also happening at the Dolphins practice facility and South Florida as the agent Drew Rosenhaus and the Dolphins are negotiating a new deal for wide receiver Brian Hartline. Hartline wants to stay in Miami. General manager Jeff Ireland holds him in high regard and wants to keep him.

And as I wrote Monday on this blog, the price point is $6 million per year on average. That's apparently what a good No. 2 wide receiver will cost in this market.

And so the market is set.

Why is this important?

Well, because if you've been paying attention you understand the Dolphins aren't done shopping. They will chase Mike Wallace in free agency. They will chase Mike Wallace in free agency. Here, let me say it one more time as I've been saying it since January, the Dolphins will chase Mike Wallace in free agency.

His agent will argue that Bowe's deal was something of a hometown discount done with one team and no other suitors. Wallace will have multiple suitors.

So Mike Wallace will cost more than what Dwayne Bowe cost the Chiefs. He considers himself a top 5 wide receiver in the NFL and because so many teams need a guy with his skill set, somebody is bound to agree with that assessment.

That means the Dolphins must be prepared to climb the money mountain well past the $11.2 million per year plateau to get Wallace. And they must be prepared to not only make him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers, but also the club's highest paid player.

Obviously this deal won't reach the top of the mountain set by Calvin Johnson ($18 million per year) or Larry Fitzgerald ($16 million per year) but Wallace's deal will conservatively come in around $12-$13 million per year when this is all done.

(Peanut gallery: But Mando, that's too expensive for the Dolphins. They only have $36-$38 million in salary cap space and about $5 million of that must be held in reserve for the draft.)

Thank you, gallery. But the Dolphins have plenty of cap space to afford Wallace.

To understand that you have to look at the breakdown of Bowe's contract. His salary cap cost for 2013, for example, will be $4 million. His cap cost for 2014 will be $12 million. His cap cost for 2015 will be $14 million and his cap cost the final two years of his deal will come in at $13 million unless the team does something different.

Looking at this example, you see that a contract similar to Bowe's would easily fit within the Miami cap structure in 2013. A $4 million cap hit is nothing. Dimitri Patterson is slated to cost the Dolphins $4.6 million against the cap in 2013 and he is unproven in Miami. Karlos Dansby and Randy Starks will cost the Dolphins twice that amount against the cap and I assure you they will not score 6-10 TDs per season as Wallace might.

So the first-year cost is not only acceptable but inviting.

Obviously, the real hit comes after the first year. Wallace would be Miami's most costly player against the cap. But again, comparing to Miami's cap structure, it fits because the quarterback is still cheap, the $12 million hit you accepted for carrying Jake Long is no longer on the books, and Starks won't be carrying that $8.45 million cap charge from the franchise tag next year.

I will say this: Assuming the talks yield a deal with Hartline as the present arc of negotiations are heading, the Dolphins are likely to add only one more expensive wide receiver. The idea of re-signing Hartline and adding both Wallace and Greg Jennings (who will fall somewhere between Hartline and Wallace on a per season basis) is likely out of the question.

The Dolphins are expected to speak to Jennings, but he would be a fallback position if the Dolphins cannot land Wallace. He wouldn't come in addition to Wallace and Hartline unless the Dolphins are willing to go on the cheap for everything else.

Back to the point: The issue of adding Mike Wallace this year is moot if you're worried whether the Dolphins have enough cap space. They have more than enough with plenty left over to do other business.

But it will get expensive down the road. That apparently is the price of doing business in free agency.

You've got to hate Andy Reed. He is a F moron. He just traded a 2nd and next year's 3rd for a meh QB who will never win a SB, at least not in KC, and overpaid both Albert and especially a bum like Bowe.

F u very much you idiot is what all teams in the NFL are saying. This guy will never win a SB and makes life a lot harder for all other teams by driving the market up so badly.

Next time you think Ireland is bad think about Andy Reed and you'll breathe a bit easier.

Tiger,

Let me see if I've got this right--so you're saying you don't like what the Chiefs have done this offseason??? LOL.

But we do still need a vet WR on this team next year. Can't have Hartline Bess and some Rooks running around out there. I just personally wish we would persue a good overall skilled receiever other than a "one trick pony" Can't we draft a one trick pony? And not pay that guy a 60MIL contract?

Posted by: bidniss | March 05, 2013 at 03:18 PM

The thing is we haven't been able to draft for years. I wish I was GM. Yea we would suck for a year or 2 but we will get better and stay getting better. You would even have to pay me like a real GM 100,000 a year and I would get the job done give me 4 years and if I fail I will give half the money back. Hate the Hartline deal thought he was worth 3-5(MAX). Like patterson but there are questions about him but the up side is great. I would get Jennings and Patterson unless on of the Guards fall to me or a DB. would TRY and get replacements for Dansby and my DL in this draft late. try and get long back for no more than 8 mil if not he walks and I will get a tackle in the second.

I would be happy if we can get Jennings if Wallace asks for too much. Say a 4 year deal worth about 8.5 million.

#85 G. JENNINGS IS STILL A PRODUCTIVE PLAYER. SIGN HIM TO A 3 YR, $22.5 MIL DEAL. RESIGN DOLPHINS WR #82 B. HARTLINE TO A 4 YR, $27.5 MIL DEAL. DRAFT TX A&M WR #25 R. SWOPES (4.35 40 YD TIME) UNDERSTANDS MIAMI'S OFFENSIVE TERMINOLOGY OF MIKE SHERMAN. DEVELOP HIM TO BECOME A MORE SEASONED ROUTE RUNNER WITH THE OTHER 3 POLISHED RECEIVERS (JENNINGS, HARTLINE, &BESS).

kc made awful move for smith, overpaying big time. but they did well in getting back colquit, alberts, and bowe

Find replacement for Swope in 1-2 seasons due to excessive concussions.........next

YG@3:49,

We did not have depth at return personel or WR and having Thigpen getting hurt was not an option for Philbin. After he had seen all he had to see from his starters throughout the year I am sure he wanted to see what the younger players could do so he could plan his off season and coming season. He probably saw enough in Thigpen in practices to not re sign Bush. IMO Thigpen could be a replacement for Bush.

Sign Jared Cook Ed Reed, Greg Jennings if we can get him at around 7-8 million use first pick on CB two second round picks on either a OL or another young WR. Jennings to develop the young WR. hartline will be Ryan's safety net. jared cook will help. Bess is reliable. If drafted WR is not showing #1 Talent. Draft WR with the no. 1 pick next year. jennings, hartline, bess, and a solid rook wr next year is definately a offense that will move the chains. cook and jennings definately can score in the redzone. Defense with Ed Reed at safety and number 1 pick assuming he can be a SOLID cb are defense will be strong this year, and our offense more reliable. if the rook WR turns out to be a stud then we will have money next year to upgrade a GOOD TEAM rather than trying to make a good team. right now we need to make sensible moves and put us in the playoffs. Once we are in teh playoffs see what weaknesses we have and adress them next year. and then we make A RUN in the playoffs. PATIENCE PEOPLE PATIENCE. also if possible sign freeney or that veteren atlanta let go. Sell them on the fact that they will live in Miami play on obvious passing downs which will add years to there career! help cameron wake tear brady's ass up!! cheap long contract 4-5 yrs for 3-4 millions again. SELLL them that they will only be used on obvious passing situations which will save there body and add to there careers!!

How can I say this nicely. Wallace isn't worth 55 million over 55 years! Don't let the door hit ya on the way out diva!

ed reed zero desire to leave balt. cook wants way to much cash. jennings is old and fragile

isn't it ironic that since a certain someone left today the blog has been peaceful?

i think we all realized today that what ails this blog is 1 person. starts with a c & ends with an m.

University of Northern Iowa's Terrell Sinkfield ran a 4.19. Before you call him another gates watch the kid film

I like him would target him in the 4th or 5th. Production wasn't great and this year WR core is deep but I see talent

GM SOD (formerly o'darris D'haiti)is not taking over the dolphins draft.

Gil Brandt tweeted a team asked BYU DE Ziggy Ansah if he had ever seen lions and tigers as he is from Ghana. His response: "Yeah, at the San Diego Zoo".

"Good number 2 wideouts put the ball in the endzone. Hartline got the new #2 wideout money but doesn't produce like one."

IF WALLACE IS HERE HARTLINE WILL SCORE MORE TD'S

B. Marshall? "They are who we thought they were"

Management WAY too cheap and dumb to say...

"Hey we need Wallace AND Jennings."

They will be lucky if they get either, especially Wallace.

GM SOD

I don't see that in this case. The kid scores from anywhere on the field.

What good is 40M in cap space if you're going to blow it? Hartline has had one productive NFL season...only caught one TD last year. Very limited upside. As stated on NFL.com, this reeks of desperation. I was hoping Ireland would maintain fiscal discipline but will not be surprised if he doesn't.

we don't really know the numbers yet for Hartline..

I can't over draft him, I am the GM of the dolphin (too many holes). If he is there in the late 3rd I may move up but have to see how my broad is looking. I have Johnathan Cyprien slated as my early 3 rd

Why I have have him as my 3th

Why are so many enamored with Cook? I live in TN and have watched and read all sorts of columns about Cook and he sucks. I mean he's ok, but as I understand he's had all kinds of trouble actually learning the playbook. Translate that into the precise WCO we run and that spells disaster.

For all the potential the guy has he has shown flashes -at best- and is way too inconsistent. I rather go for Eiffert and bring back Fasano. So ok he is not going to tear it up with stats but the guy has to be one of the best -if not the best- blocking TE in football, go ask any coach how important that is. Eiffert BTW is a decent blocker himself already but has the playmaking ability Fasano lacks. The latter will teach the kid tho to perfect his blocking.

@Frank Moore,
"Forget Wallace, Jennings,sign Cook".

That is the dumbest thing I've seen in quite awhile.

That Ross is a cheap SOB and will never produce a winner.

Cook will not be signed selfish player with decent talent my target would be Keller would can strive with or QB. not a perfect fit in our system but would be a weapon and up grade to out current situation

Harmel, go back to your Jets blog

That Ross is a cheap SOB (heard of the CAP) ?

Posted by: Harmel | March 05, 2013 at 05:08 PM

But I will do what I can with what I have. WILL FIND TALENT

PFT reports Chicago Bears offering Cook a contract. That didn't take long.

keller is awful much rather have finley or davis

The truth hurts?

Ross wont even pay for a real GM.

Got to get the deep threat so Wallace has to be the target and he will help open up the running game too as Miller can be a home run hitter too. They really need that seem Tight End and would love Keller or Cook or a guy like Eifert or Ertz in the draft although Eifert will probably cost them their first rd pick to get him. Clay is a fullback, time to end that dream that he is a TE and Egnew at this point cannot be counted on. Big play WR and TE are a must to help Tannehill reach his potential.

Even if they secure Wallace I would think Jeffy will draft a WR as well.

No Harmel, trolls like you hurt. People who are NFL deficient, like you, hurt. Someone who adds nothing, like you, hurt. You have nothing constructive to say. Go play with yourself

Ross wont even pay for a real GM.

Posted by: Harmel | March 05, 2013 at 05:14 PM

Why would Ross pay for anybody when 90% of the teams fans are dumb, illiterate morons like you?

Hmm...

As a Steelers fan, you all can pay "Money Mike." This guy has been coined by Mike Tomlin as a "One Trick Pony" since he was drafted. If he isnt going deep, he pouts. He will never fight for a ball. He is allergic to contact. He uses his body, not his hands to catch. His lone asset is his speed and he is one turned ankle away from starting to lose that. You are crazy to want this guy. Save your money and draft Tavon Austin or someone like that.

IREBUMB DRAFTED TURNER INSTEAD OF MIKE WALLACE.
Worst GM in franchise history...
Even worst than Rick Speilman.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE TIRED OF THE LOSING! WE'RE TIRED OF THE CLASSLESS INCOMPETENT GM! HELP RESTORE THIS FRANCHISE TO ITS FORMER GLORY! BOYCOTT IRELAND AND HELP MAKE THE CHANGE!!

IRELAND WILL EAT PRE FROZEN CORNED BEEF IN A FEW DAYS ,THINKING HE'S EATING WILD SALMON.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this today but on my way home I was listening to NFL radio and they said the Dolphins were working hard at signing Hartline and the two sides are very close to cloising a long term deal that will pay him close to 6 million per year.

Roger,
I agree with some extent to what wrote, problem is that Austin, as much as I love his play, is just 5'8". IMO at 12th that is just to much of a gamble. Austin is the only other player out there with that kind of speed.

Yes Wallace may be a one trick pony but that is exactly why we would bring him here, to stretch the field and to keep safeties honest. All of those thinking Wallace is #1 WR material are nuts. He's never been and he will not be but that kind of commodity in his speed is just to hard to pass up when your team has virtually zero playmaking ability. Whatever amount Wallace commands will mean nothing once those seats are filled.

IMO the Phins must bring Wallace and pick Da'Rick Rogers, who will eventually become our #1 guy, and Ryan Swope to work the slot (Bess will mentor him), in addition of bringing Hartline back, who works the sidelines perhaps better than anybody in football.

And now I read the blog and see Armando already saiod som ething about it. oh well.

No stadium handouts for the 4.4 BILLION dollar man!!!!!!!!!!!!!

get wallace draft impact defensive player with 1st pick and give up both 2s to get that tight end

HARTLINE IS IRISH LIKE OUR GARAGE MANAGER.......

ROSS FIX YOUR OWN STADIUM!

Hartline, you can bet will be signed before the 9th. The other FAs, hopefully so before they enter That Whirlpool.

Ireland is the G.M and that's a fact, u people who are calling for a boycott are typing to read ur own words, if u will. He will conduct FA and the draft and there is nothing u can do about it so SHUT UP. Ireland has the chance to shut u up him self when he's done with acquiring players. I hope he does a great job evaluating talent this yr. tha twill help the team and stop all of you whining
