That stuff about the Dolphins slowing in free agency because they were waiting on Jake Long? No.
After signing both TE Dustin Keller and receiver Brandon Gibson today, the club also announced it hosted a free agency visit by cornerback Brent Grimes.
Grimes is a six-year vet who has spent his entire career with the Atlanta Falcons. He made his way onto the team as an undrafted free agent and made the Pro Bowl in 2010. He has played 59 career games and has 13 career interceptions but last year played only one game due to injury.
Grimes tore his Achilles' tendon in the season opener and missed the rest of the season. It is unclear whether the 5-10, 183-pounder is fully recovered from that injury but it must be said the full recovery time for such an injury is usually more than six months.
Grimes, 28 in July, is the first cornerback visiting the Dolphins following the departure of cornerback Sean Smith.
Smith signed with the Chiefs after the Dolphins showed little interest in retaining him. Little interest is defined as the Dolphins didn't offer him a contract.
Cornerback is considered a deep position in this year's draft.
The Dolphins need help at cornerback and will get it either in free agency or the draft or, more likely, a combination of the two. The only cornerbacks the Dolphins have on the roster with starting experience are Nolan Carroll, Richard Marshall, Dimitri Patterson and Jimmy Wilson.
Carroll started last year but lost his job late in the season. Marshall spent most of the season injured nursing a bad back that required surgery. Patterson was a late-season addition who started one game and promptly got injured. Wilson made one emergency start in 2011 but is considered mostly a nickel or dime player.
This has been a terrible year in the free agent market for corners.

yesssssssss finally the guy i wanted. get this done ireland

It seems to me that we had a great safety here who tore his Achilles and came back the next year strong. Everyone remembers Yeremiah Bell

They must be giving up on LONG
Way to stay with t mando, i knew all tat sucking UP to Fireland would pay off

A 30 year old coming off an achilies? No thanks! Come on Jeff, go young & healthy!.
Posted by: Just FYI | March 15, 2013 at 06:04 PM
So Dusty, not to start an arguement. But you just ripped Marshall on the previous post for missing most of the season with an injury. Even though he has no other injury history but you love Grimes so much...? What gives?
Posted by: PG13 | March 15, 2013 at 06:06 PM
I knew it! Grimes w/o Achilles is still > Carroll.
That's one acorn worth examining, as I suggested more than two weeks ago on the internet.
Posted by: Boyd Crowder | March 15, 2013 at 06:06 PM
achillies for cb is very questionable
Posted by: Dolfandave | March 15, 2013 at 06:06 PM
grimes was a top 5 corner in nfl before the injury, int machine. guy turns 30 in july, still young enough to comeback strong. dude is a baller
Posted by: dusty bottoms | March 15, 2013 at 06:06 PM
Grimes is better then a 3 legged Sean Smith any day or night
Posted by: AR-15 | March 15, 2013 at 06:08 PM
28, not 30!
Posted by: LOL | March 15, 2013 at 06:09 PM
dusty,
It concerns me Grimes was out due to achilles tendon injury. Especially playing corner. Marino was hobbled the rest of career after suffering an achilles tendon injury.
Before signing him, I hope Ireland brings in CIS Miami to do his physical exam. LOL....
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 15, 2013 at 06:09 PM
Grimes' a baller......do you research like I do, and do not knee-jerk his age, etc.
He's better than any corner we have or have had since VD/SS reared their ugly, Pacells-influenced heads at Davie.
Sign Him!
Posted by: Boyd Crowder | March 15, 2013 at 06:10 PM
LOL he was born in 1983 . He'll be 30 this year.
Posted by: Jeremy in the Canadian Cowtown | March 15, 2013 at 06:10 PM
Grimes has only played a full season TWICE in his prof career. 09 and 10. @ 30y/o? Pass.
Posted by: PG13 | March 15, 2013 at 06:12 PM
pg13 grimes is 1000 better than marshall, be real dude. cut marshall now and sign grimes. wont even cost us anymore vs cap. hell cut patterson also
Posted by: dusty bottoms | March 15, 2013 at 06:13 PM
I was going off what Armando has in his aricle. Appears to be a typo on his part. He'll be 30 in July.
If he's 30 & coming of an achillies than I'm with just fyi, PASS! I'd rather sign or draft younger guys. Grimes will probably be looking for a bigger payday.
He'd fit under the cap next year but, it's after than I'm starting to worry about. Interested to see what Gibsons contract is worth.
Posted by: LOL | March 15, 2013 at 06:13 PM
no doubt yesterday def give him an exam but if everything is fine sign this kid. damn good player
Posted by: dusty bottoms | March 15, 2013 at 06:14 PM
Sign Grimes n Dumervil! Let Jake walk. Trade #12 and 2nd rounder from indy to move up to 4 or 5 and take Joeckle or Fisher. I'd definetely rock the Gingerland t-shirt with Jeffrey's photo adorned on it!
Posted by: PHILLIE Chirino | March 15, 2013 at 06:14 PM
Grimes will probably want more money than we're willing to pay.
You never know though, he's the best cb left on the market and we're in pretty dire need IMO.
I wouldn't worry to much about the achilles. I'm sure he will have to pass a pretty in depth physical.

Grimes was a great corner in 09 and 10. 2013?? Who knows, I'd pass but that's just me.
Posted by: PG13 | March 15, 2013 at 06:17 PM

I see Grimes 6 million max. I dont think he'll overvalue himself. He cant, Sean Smith's gotten a contract far before him.
That alone suggests he can not command the big money. Isee him no more than 6 million a year max. Then Marshall or Patterson gets wacked.
Marshall's more likely, seeing he's beginning to have back issues. Back issues seem to always come and go.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 15, 2013 at 06:21 PM
I'm with Dusty on this one, this guy is a baller. 100% getting this guy if healthy.

If Ireland can sign Grimes for 5 or so, Jake around 7 and restructures Dimitri to around 2.5 Jeff Ireland will deserve to win the NFL executive of the year award.

Marino RAN like a hobbled man BEFORE the achilles surgery! But the man had eyes in the back of his head. Those beautiful step-aways from trouble. Great pocket presence and courage.say what you want about Fiedler, but THAT guy was a MAN.
Posted by: IMAWriter | March 15, 2013 at 06:30 PM
Omar must have announced it.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | March 15, 2013 at 06:30 PM
Ireland has become a man possesed do we get another cornerback first pick in the drsft or do ge get the pass rusher first im hoping its corner because richard marshall can be a solid number 2 but an even better nickel back because this is a passing league.
Posted by: kidjoker91 | March 15, 2013 at 06:33 PM
David Canter mocking the Broncos Dummervil gaff:
David Canter@davidcanter
Everyone relax. Even if the Dolphins did sign Grimes you wouldn't get confirmation til the fax comes through. #WTFax
LOL..................

Posted by: josh | March 15, 2013 at 06:34 PM
We lost far more talent then we gained. What a joke.
Posted by: Monte | March 15, 2013 at 06:35 PM
Grimes is spent. He'll never get back to form. You guys get infatuated with a name and lose all objectivity. You are all high on drugs.
Posted by: carga | March 15, 2013 at 06:35 PM
Great FA for Ireland. The proof of his longtime value will be this draft, but now it's about need. Still, our scouts have to give him the correct scoop. I hate when a guy we passed on (which is often) is MUCH better than the guy we chose. This HAS to stop.
If jun a year from now, our 2013 picks (for the most part) are making plays, then you HAVE to give the man his due.
Posted by: IMAWriter | March 15, 2013 at 06:35 PM
Wouldn't be a fan of this move. Hope it's not true.
Posted by: LOL | March 15, 2013 at 06:35 PM
Grimes & Dumervil make our D top 5 probably. Have to see it on the field but i dammn sure would love it on paper!
Posted by: PHILLIE Chirino | March 15, 2013 at 06:36 PM
THE DRAFT HAS PLENTY OF AGGRESSIVE DEFENSIVE BACKS.
Posted by: MIADOLFAN207 | March 15, 2013 at 06:36 PM
@ just shut up AGAIN people been givin him his props so dont suck him so loud we cant hear the signings bruh!
Posted by: josh | March 15, 2013 at 06:36 PM
It is clear that Armando has has had some help from his freiends, except for Keller, There, te la entollamos.
Posted by: oscar canosa | March 15, 2013 at 06:37 PM
IMAWriter I always would argue yea Marino was not a runner. But before his Achilles injury that should of never happened. He set up very quickly in the pocket. His 5 step drops backs were classic with the quick release he had. Edwin Pope once said it was obvious that Marino surgery on his Achilles was not a great surgery. He walked with limp after that and that was not normal. I like what we have done in free agency
but we need corners now.
Posted by: Mike Gentile | March 15, 2013 at 06:37 PM
Unless they dump Marshall or Patterson to make it cap neutral. 2 years at most.
