Brent Grimes visits the Dolphins

That stuff about the Dolphins slowing in free agency because they were waiting on Jake Long? No.

After signing both TE Dustin Keller and receiver Brandon Gibson today, the club also announced it hosted a free agency visit by cornerback Brent Grimes.

Grimes is a six-year vet who has spent his entire career with the Atlanta Falcons. He made his way onto the team as an undrafted free agent and made the Pro Bowl in 2010. He has played 59 career games and has 13 career interceptions but last year played only one game due to injury.

Grimes tore his Achilles' tendon in the season opener and missed the rest of the season. It is unclear whether the 5-10, 183-pounder is fully recovered from that injury but it must be said the full recovery time for such an injury is usually more than six months.

Grimes, 28 in July, is the first cornerback visiting the Dolphins following the departure of cornerback Sean Smith.

Smith signed with the Chiefs after the Dolphins showed little interest in retaining him. Little interest is defined as the Dolphins didn't offer him a contract.

Cornerback is considered a deep position in this year's draft.

The Dolphins need help at cornerback and will get it either in free agency or the draft or, more likely,  a combination of the two. The only cornerbacks the Dolphins have on the roster with starting experience are Nolan Carroll, Richard Marshall, Dimitri Patterson and Jimmy Wilson.

Carroll started last year but lost his job late in the season. Marshall spent most of the season injured nursing a bad back that required surgery. Patterson was a late-season addition who started one game and promptly got injured. Wilson made one emergency start in 2011 but is considered mostly a nickel or dime player.

This has been a terrible year in the free agent market for corners. Grimes would be a good pickup as a stopgap or on a prove-it contract.

We'll keep after you. You have no chance.

I was busy with light work did grimes sign?

The Bell analogy regarding the achilles revovery as it pertains to Grimes is, IMO maybe not quite valid, as playing safety is not the same a cover corner when it comes to contact, coverage, and physical stress.

it has to be an incentive type contract with playing time and performance.

Ireland signing Dummervil would be like pissing in the wind and having blowing into Elway and Peyton's face.

Ireland would be able to say, "Fk you too, Elway/Manning." LOL...

give Jake a Sam Baker contract 6.8 mil no more

Good Sign. Ireland Is Looking At CB's Now!!

The Wr Position Is Set. The Fins Will Keep BESS!! The Fins Need 4 Capable WR's!! Even Hartline Said So!! Gibson Is A Good Pick Up!! This Offense Only Really Needs O-Line!! Or For Jake To Make His Decision!!

The Signing Of Grimes!! Probably Means The End Of 1 Of The 2 CB's!! Even Though You Need At Least 3 Good Corners In Today's NFL!! Or 4 If You Are Playing The Fins!!

Miami Dolphins Offensive Juggernaut!!

Sounds Nice!!

they will for sure dump marshall, he didn't paly for them....

Just the fact that Grimes is visiting here says a lot about our other CBs. Carroll, Patterson, etc. Doesn't it ?

Not sure what happened with the false report but that would have been awful quick.

I could see this one being a 2 or 3 day process. I think it is good news though that maybe we're not considering going with Marshall and Patterson as starters and probably for sure having to use a 1st rder on a cb.

Yup, it would be a remarkable offseason hitting on all of the fa picks, draft, and shove dick down Elway/Manning's throats by stealing away Dummervil.

Sign Grimes To A 1 Year Deal.

FORGET ABOUT CORNERS, most importantly is our OFFENSIVE LINE. Every teams offense sinks without an o-line. Unless Martin somehow grows longer arms and gets much stronger he is a weak spot at RT forget about LT. We will need time to get the ball to guys like Wallace, Gibson, and Hartline. With todays NFL rules corners are all bad, they all get beat, it's more important to have a good pass rush and a good offensive line. Wake needs help, if he were to ever get hurt we would get toasted by any decent QB regardless of who our CB's are.

I'm not up on the corners left, other than Revis (IMA licking his chops haha). Cason is gone, so is there anyone else other than Grimes, that;'son the good side of 30?

could this really happen?

what an offseason and 5 picks in top 82?

someone slap me....

No ned to panic fellas. There's still a lot of secondary talent out there. I think the Fins should continue cleaning house with the slugs they currently have under contract (Carrol, Marshall) and bring in two vets- Huff, Talib, Winfield, Asomugha, Cason, Woodson. All have their flaws but any are an upgrade over what we have. The market for decent talent has dropped like a rock on players that were once overpaid.

But a change of scenery can always rejuvinate a talented vet. Woodson was a stud for years in GB. Mix in a couple of these guys with a solid draft and we over last year's mess

Who Needs A TE We Have 4 WR's!!

On The O-Line

Dashi Isn't Worried. Ireland Will Make The Right Decision. Jake at The Right Price!! Or 2 Free Agent O-Linemen.

Shoring Up The Secondary Is The Only Other Priority!!

Ireland Save Something For The Draft!!

#12- E.Lacy!!

i forgot Starks

could this really happen?

No one wants to hear this but it is true, our secondary wasn't great but it was our Linebackers that were mostly messing up our pass defense. they were out of place when in zones and getting beat when in man. I really hope Jake Long signs with us.

I think we should either......
A) sign Long & Dumervil then trade up for Milner.

B) sign Grimes & Dumervil then trade up for Joeckle/Fisher.

Which do u prefer?

The message is clear- nobody (almost) is safe on the Fins current roster! Underachieving is not acceptable. Keep going Jeffy boy. If we need to get more creative to create cap space, there are others that won't be missed. The secondary needs almost a complete makeover. Others can be cut.

Would rather sign a RT like Sebastian Vollmer and pick 2 CBs early in the draft. Lost speed by a torn achilles will probably never come back.

Youre talking possible top 3 status for Fisher or Joeckle. Like them both but no thanks. Youre talking trading at least 2 1st rd picks.

Dumb to pay a RG3 ranson to get an olineman. No way!

Sign long, Dumervill is a bliting OLB, not sure he will succed at DE. I still don't believe in J. Martin ( I hope I am wrong) In my opinion we still need a RT or RG even if we re-sign Long.

The only manageble OT tradeup scenario will probably be Lane Johnson. He maybe available anywhere from #7 to #12.

Hell, he may even fall right into our laps.

Why Is Everybody Always Enamored With The DE Of The Week.

Ireland Will Sign 1. Just At The Right Price.

Elvis Is A Little Short And Light To Be A 3 Down DE.

OK As A Situational Rusher. But So Is Freeney!! And Abraham.

Ireland Will Make The Choice That Gives Him The Best Value(Cheapest and Best For The Price He Wants)

Great nfl.com article on lowered expectations for jetts in 2013 to read while we wait for more goodies to arrive.

Ok so Vollmer and Dumervil. Trade #12 and late 2nd to get up to 4 or 5 to take Millner (hands down the best corner on Everybody's board). 2nd round BPA at either corner, te, or o-line). Swope in 3rd or another corner. I could live with that. Reaaaaally would like to see a Wake/Dumervil combo!

Wheres the dumerville stuff coming from? Are they looking at him

We have to get grimes. Dude is tough

Remember The DE we drafted out of Miami last year, he may be able to step up and become starter material.

I like the way Incarceraed Bob put it best. He said:

Jets wont be competitive again until Darrelle Revis's hairline has receeded further than Lebron James's.

When jets gonna cut teb ow so media can all follow that garbage and which cfl team will sign him

The thought of this guy in a Fins uniform makes me salivate. Unfortunately, I think he remains a Bronco. Still hope Ireland keep the door open for one more situational pass rusher. These guys are very valuable in a pass happy league and I would love either guy that Pats are looking at.

Problem is that Fins still need to solidy the O line. Lot of work to be done but there's still the draft.

Keep going Jeff. It just might save your job!

Heard that one yesterday YG. Pretty funny 1st time around! U will not have to pay an RG3 ransom cuz there is no RG3 or Luck this year. Everywhere u turn u hear that there are no franchise QBs or elite, cant miss prospects in top part of round. Have a feeling that this is the year we trade up to get who we like, whoever that may be.

Dont forget that the Dolphins have about 11-12 million more in fat that can be trimmed off of the roster and still be under 2013 salary cap. I would gladly trade any fat that could be trimmed to bring in Dummervil.

In a fking heartbeat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday is this u hoping or have u heard something on dumerville

Dummerville is a 5 ft 11 midget DE not sure why so many of you have a hardon for him. He doesn't fit a 4-3 scheme well being that short.

Dumervil would be a pass-rush specialist playing opposite Cam Wake or blitzing from any OLB spot in obvious passing downs. We would still need Odrick but he will improve our D nonetheless.

I'd think (hope) that philbin and Coyle would smart enough to know whether Dumervil would be a good fit with the D we will run. That is one call Jeff won't, or SHOULDN'T make.

Put him next to starks or solia and just bring the heat little man! With odrick n starks up the middle on passing downs! Wake n the lil man meeting at the qb! Not to mentin wheeler off edge or ellerbe up the gut! SSSSSSHHHHHHYYYYYTTTTTTT

Jennings to the files per shefter

Get young, get fast, and attack! Offense adjust to us not vice versa!

Vikes lol

Keep rolling, Ireland! Free up all the draft picks!!!

From a previous blog

Adding Wallace provides real big play ability for long yardage TD's. He also will open it up for Hartline and now Gibson and Keller to score in the red zone. Bess will make a few more TD's as well. I also like the idea of developing Binns and Mathews as your backup WR's. The squad is set for 2014.

Now we move on to CB, T, DE as the remaining needs. One in Free Agency and the rest in the Draft.

If what you say is true, this is all going to fall on Sherman. If Tanny doesn't get 25 TD's (average in the NFL) due to horrible. strange play calls, not due to Tanny's throwing, Philbin will have to get younger at OC.
If, however tanny flunks the test, then you STILL fire Sherman, as it was most likely HIS input that prompted Ireland to go for Tanny. That, and the outcry of Fans.

Give me grimes!!!!! Do not lose hin ireland

Wow that list of big losses is hilarious. We used to have those garbage players here. U see it now and realize why we sucked

Forget Dumervil. He aint in the cards.

Agree pg no reason to talk about him. Grimes is the big one we need

Grimes is spent. Dream on.

I like the logic. Hey we need a corner! Let's take a 30 yo coming off a season ending achilles injury. Smart plan.

dusty aint playin bout grimes yall. better get that man his vet haha

Grimes is the man. Bad bad man.

Take Grimes only if the NFL allows crutches on the field.

If you take Grimes, its one year at a very low price with an out to cancel all if he doesn't crack the starting lineup game 1.
