Dolphins add Grimes as cornerback stopgap

The Dolphins have managed to bring players they want to the team as unrestricted free agents this offseason while at the same time holding their ground on what they pay players they believe come with risk.

The latest example of this is Miami landing unrestricted free agent cornerback Brent Grimes to a one-year deal. The deal believed to be in the $4 million range is not exactly what Grimes was looking for. He wanted a long-term deal that averaged $6-$8 million. Grimes' base salary in 2013 will be $2.75 million.

But because he didn't play last year due to an Achilles' injury, because his market did not include more than three or four teams, and because the market for corners is generally been depressed, Grimes accepted the Dolphins one-year offer today.

This is a good addition for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins have also signed TE Dustin Keller to a one-year deal. They signed guard Lance Louis to a one-year deal and they signed defensive tackle Vaughn Martin to a two-year deal. This after they paid much bigger money for receiver Mike Wallace and linebackers Phillip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe.

This is a good job by general manager Jeff Ireland. He stuck to his conviction on a price for Grimes and got it done.

"We are very excited that we were able to reach an agreement with Brent,” said Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland. “His experience and history of play making production will add a great deal to our secondary."

Grimes is expected to be ready for the start of the season, according to an NFL source. Indeed, that may be conservative. Grimes is already running on his surgically repaired Achilles.

"I'll be straight in no time," Grimes told the South Florida media. He declined to give a specific time frame. He did say the surgeon told him 6-8 months recovery time. May would be eight months.

Grimes said he was not certain he'd participate in the coming OTAs. I would not expect it.

Grimes, 30 in July, was the Falcons franchise tag player in 2012. He played only one game in which he ruptured the Achilles. The previous three seasons he started 36 of a possible 48 games and collected 12 interceptions.

One more thing on the Grimes addition:

If he's healthy and back to his previous form he is a likely starter. And that means the Dolphins do not go into the draft with a major need for a starting cornerback high in the draft.

In other words, Ireland will have latitude as coach Joe Philbin said, to pick the best available player.

The Dolphins continue to have offensive tackle Eric Winston on the radar. He will sign with the team if the club convinces him to take a short-term (perhaps one-year) deal that is not for huge money. Winston, obviously, continues to believe he will get more somehwere.

We'll see.

Nothing wrong with JMart, = to Long, except, they both have problems with speed rushers, Martin with the USC edge devils. Besides that, Andrew Luck did mostly fine.

BUSTER,,,,

REMEMBER ,REED IS A DONKEY HC ....HE WILL NEVER WIN AGAIN AS HE DID WITH THAT DOG QB OR MACNAB......

HE WANTS TO TAKE HIS TIME AS HC TO GET HIS MILLIONS LIKE OUR EX PIZZA MAN .

IT'S ALL A GAME ...

...we let Jake Long go, anticipating drafting a better, younger substitute...what's the diff?

Ignore ALoco the troll. Omar Kelly's penls knows more about football then this fool

BUSTER;;;;;;

ONE HUGE DIFFERENCE......

LONGIS INJURED BIG TIME.

ALBERT IS NOT..

THE
CELLAR

id offer a 2 and 6 for albert. guy is a very good left tackle

LONG IS INJURED BIG TIME

IF OFFER A 2 AND 6 ..THAT MEans you r ready to give him 10 million a year ...

If OT is the first pick, may not have to trade-up for one of the top 4: after Joeckel, Fisher, Johnson, or Fluker should be there at #12.
UM's Mckinnie is also a possibility to sign?

BOYCOTT is a Troll or Mentally Challenged - pick one - which one is it boycott?

Even if these guys lay an egg, nice job by Ireland getting us into position for this offseason. Still, anything less than 10-6 will be a grave letdown this year!! Phins up!!

In defense of those that don't like JMart at LT, it must be admitted that at Stanford he had David DeCastro by his side. Uff.

Forget trading for fat Albert IMO. Look to see if Johnson falls to 12. If not, trade down if you can find and takers. At that point it's the BPA at TE,OL,or DB, and maybe in the 3rd round look for a nifty RB. I'd like to see Winston added as a FA but I'm not trading my Draft cards to another team for somebody their willing to discard.

If we don't have to go O-Line at 12, I'm not really sure who I would like.

Is Ansah that much better than Okafor who would be there in the 2nd?

Is Vaccaro that much better than Cyprien or Elam?

We're not gonna get Milliner or Jordan and I really don't see a need for a DT that high.

Would we go OLBer?? Mingo or Jarvis Jones??

Trade up for top LT

Winston AND Martin are RTs by preference & performance.

We are probably going BPA in the Draft. Anybody cares to predict the first 3 Players on Ireland's Board?

benny MALONE,

YOUR POST @ 7;40 PM IS A STUDY IN THE (( CELLAR THINKING )) IN HOW TO BUILD A GREAT TEAM.......

THE
CELLAR..

Regards RB; of course as a UM grad, love Lamar Miller, he still has not reached his peak, Thigpen nice has some speed and returns kicks, Thomas does have injury issues;
so Giovanni Bernard out of NC would be great insurance here ; rushed for 1200 yds each of last 2 yrs, with great speed, also returns kicks; and I know Ireland brought him in some weeks ago.

LT first, Eifert, Swopes.

winston is awful. johnson is said to be a project. will be a long year at lt if they go that route

GoCanes and Dusty and Rick et al.....I think Ireland plays the waiting game on draft day.....sees which LT falls to #12....makes a decision frm there..

....I would have been one of the last to admit this six months ago....but I think this GM finally has his stuff together...

..hey..sometimes the light bulb goes on all of a sudden...

...I like what he's done so far...and I have always believed in 2nd chances....

..so I can't help but hope he is on the right track..

....I'm a fan...what else can I do.....GO FINS!!!!!

.....have to split folks.....Laters.......

We don't have 6th dusty. We have two 5th's though.

talking 6th next year, its a next years pick on what they want for second one on albert. could make it a cond 6th with chance to be a 5th

If I were gm, I definitely wait until after the draft to broker a trade for Albert.

1. I see if Johnson falls to me at #12 or does it cost less than a 2nd rd pick to move up.

2. An after draft Albert trade means giving up none of my 2013 draft picks for him. Then I would do a 2014 2nd rd pick.

...in parting let me just say...yah Nino...I'll take 10 and 6...for sure.....

That wouldn't be terrible dusty. It wouldn't surprise me if was the $8 million salary that is the sticking point as Aloco said.

yesterday u cant wait, they want a 2nd this year. they will keep him if they enter draft with him

YG....

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE THOUGHT ,(( IF YOU WANT A PLAYER ,YOU BETTER GRAPE HIM ))................

and this is the year to give up a second, not next year when we only have one. plus this draft is very weak

GRAB HIM

didnt they offer jake close to that?? albert much better than jake

DUSTY......

JACK LONG WAS PUSHED OUT..HE'S INJURED AND THE DOLPHINS WANT NO THING TO DO WITH HIM...

lol exactly we were smart to push out "jack long"

There are very good Players this year at DE,S,WR.

personally i would pass on johnson either way, big 12 country where i live and he wasnt very good in those games. id be hoping jarvi jones slips to us like it seems he may now

JACK LONG DID PLAY FEW GAMES FOR A LOT OF MONEY FOR TWO YEARS ....

THE DOLPHINS CAN'T KEEP PLAYERS ,JUST TO MAKE OUR DUMB FANS HAPPY..IT'S SIMPLE..

u tell them aloco damn jack long

Your misspellings are getting old, ALoco. Please be more inventive.

OSCAR,

DO YOU AGREE THAT ,THE WORST YEARS OF FINS HISTORY ARE THESE WHEN OUR GARAGE MANAGER MANGED THAT TEAM AND LONG PLAYED LT TO PROTECT OUR QB .....

EITHER, DID ANY GOOD......

Who is the garage manager?

Worst years are when Jimmy left us in the hands of Mustachio! Inherited a team with a good defense, has the leading rusher in the NFL, and we still dont make the playoffs! When ur offense consists of Ricky right, ricky left, Ricky up the middle......u suck as a coach. Then when Ricky says F-YOU, all of a sudden u and Ricky Spielman start trading away picks to save your asshes. Trade the future, for now. Yet that didnt work. Leads to a downward spiral of buffooones after that. Saban f'dd up too (the greatest college coach ever possibly when all is said and done). He's got Culpepper and The great Jason Allen on his resume. Dont even talk about Cam. Tuna blesses us with Sunglasses Spo. But it's all Ireland's fault! GTFOH

NOTICE HOW EVERY HC FOR THE FINS FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS WHEN HE GOT FIRED ,HE NEVER BECAME ANY GOOD ELSE WHERE ...........

THE PHONY COACHES FROM HELL .....................

How bout Saban? He's done a ring or two!

..............killed!

I AM TALKING A HC ,NOT SOME HELPER FOR THE HC..

THE PATS GOT A THOUSAND PEOPLE WHO GOT RINGS TOO...

BUT THANKS TO THEIR HC AND BRADY.

The NE Run is done. Girlie Brady won't be back to the dance.

TOLSTOY ,

BRADY IS WORTH 200 MILLION ,,,,,

WHAT IS YOUR WORT??????????

Where's YG4E at? We got some things to discuss...and just because dusty bottoms said a guy isn't good doesn't make it so. I'll take the statistics as fact and a single opinion as that not a consensus opinion.

I'll say it again if you don't understand clearly. I would take Tavon Austin at 12. The guy is electric and a touchdown waiting to happen. But only if we get a tackle before the draft.

ALoco-- the antagonist

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL..... I WILL STOP POSTING TO READ ONLY.............

There is no true phinfan that could be opposed to our FA work this year. Any derogatory statements are just an attempt at futility.

I'm worth 101 dollars in cash, but I am 1000 times more useful to society than any football player.

F.O.F, The FA aquasitions look like 2010s, Your thoughts?

HOW IN HELL, YOU CAN BE HELPFUL TO SOCITY WHEN YOUR WORTH A 100 BUCKS ?

UNLES YOU R A GARBAGE MAN ...

Aloco, Are you out with the Hippie Odindouche?

I work for a firm that does medical research. Many of us also do volunteer work.

Brady throws a stupid football. This helps nobody.

ALoco.

Would you like to see Tavon Austin as our #12 pick?

Brilliant performance by Ireland. All the Ireland haters are looking pretty stupid.

I hope we maneuver our draft picks so that we can pick up Tyler Eifert at a reasonable price then draft a couple of cornerbacks and a couple of WR on a best available player basis then get depth at offensive lineman and defense in ht later rounds. Very exciting period. For the most part we can focus on drafting best available player.

Other variable is for Tannehill to be diligent, study film so as to upgrade his reasoning and work on accuracy.

Go Phins!

YG4E....Why do you require the approval of others? No one here is right or wrong on their opinions. Facts are facts man.

Simply put I would take Tavon as a short to intermediate threat in the passing game. That kid can do a lot given the chance. We have a deep threat in Wallace but need explosive guys that can put points on the scoreboard. I want every team in the league to fear our offense.

dads,

YG, like odin and dashe, is a very immature pyschologoically underdevolped person. All of those guys are stuck mentally at 12.
