Dolphins operating by familiar script but will finale be different?

Dolphins fans are reinvigorated these days. I know this because the emails to me saying as much have tripled. The traffic on this blog has multiplied the past three weeks. I have more people following me on twitter than ever before.

The Dolphins are seeing the fruits of this excitement also in some areas.

As I write in my column in today's Miami Herald the sales of season tickets to new fans is proceeding nicely.

But ...

Yes, folks, there's seemingly always a but. The renewal sales are not doing well. Season ticket holders that spent their money last season are not so far buying in as well this offseason despite the apparent upgrades in free agency and the hope that some of the club's upcoming 11 draft picks will be contributors to turning the Dolphins into winners for the first time since 2008.

I have a theory why this is -- one I've shared with Dolphins CEO Mike Dee and others. I believe Dolphins fans who have seen much heartache and pain the past decade and have gotten their hopes up multiple times only to have them dashed aren't going to operate on sheer faith anymore.

Many want to see results before they invest in tickets again.

And here's the thing:

The Dolphins, who obviously want to make the point that things are different this time, are actually following a very familiar script this offseason in telling you why the results in 2013 will be different. It's uncanny, really.

So, bottom line, will things be different in 2013? I'm not sure. I think so.

I love the Mike Wallace acquisition. I don't know that the linebacker additions will produce as many big plays as the Dolphins hope. I believe the Dolphins will be just fine without Jake Long or Sean Smith because, frankly, neither player actually ever won a game for the Dolphins. I really would like the team to add a proven and experienced pass-rusher while one is still out there.

But I still have questions about the quarterback position. Everyone, including coach Joe Philbin, this offseason is telling me Ryan Tannehill is the real deal. He's going to be very good, they say. There are no warning signs for him failing, they say.

If that's the case, everything will be fine with the 2013 Dolphins.

But I simply am not certain that will be the case. I saw some good but some not-so-good play out of Tannehill in 2013 even as other rookie QBs were playing like Pro Bowl players. So I think the jury is still out and I'm not ready to endorse him as the real thing yet.

And if Tannehill isn't the real deal?

Suffice to say we've seen what will happen play out before.

Plus, Shawn Williams had one of the fastest combine 40's(4.46) for safeties. Speed kills son. LOL...

Good day fellas the dolphins are moving forward thank-god see you guys in the next post fellow Dolphin fans !!

Dashii,

Plus, Georgia safety Shawn Williams has the size(6'0 213 lbs)to make wr's pay dearly for catching the football over the middle. He created 3 ff's last season with his hard hitting ability.

He would be a possible steal 3rd-4th rd. Plus Clemons being under 1yr contract opens the door for this kid to show he's capable of supplanting him.

i cant wait until tannehill starts dominating and all you idiots jump on the bandwagon. you people are such a joke. how many bad throws did he make last year? not many. how many bad decisions did he make last year? not many. i see eli manning make 3 times the bad throws and decisions every year that i saw tannehill make in 1. i dont want to see any of you idiots who are bashing him on this blog talking about how good he is this time next year. back up your qb. if you know anything about football, which most of you don't, then you know that he looked great last year with the worst receiving core of all time. trent dilfer said he will be the best qb of his class. jaws says he is going to be a great qb. these guys, along with myself have watched every throw he made last year. dilfer also said he may go through a few growing pains this year depending who they put around him. its just a matter of time before hes one of the best in the league. did i mention hes also the hardest worker on the team and incredibly smart as well. if you dont know anything about football keep your damn mouth shut!

And if Tannehill isn't the real deal?

-Armando Salguero-
==================

Well, it would certainly suck balls Big Time if he's not the Real Deal.

But at this particular time, I don't think it matters as much as some might think. At least not from a strategical point of view.

Philbin and Co took over a terrible team and have set about re-building. Philbin's new systems and philosophies are affecting the team so much, that even Ireland's shucking a lot of the old Parcell's ideologies.

So, even if Tannehill turns out to NOT be the Real Thing, we're still heading in the right direction. Another testament to how big and SMART it was to resign Matt Moore and keep a kid like Devlin with all the upside and potential.

I hope that Tannehill turns out to be the man. If not, it obviously will have set us back. But thanks to Philbin, it'll be minimized. For two reasons, Philbin's system and the players he's bringing in that fit the system.

In my opinion Moore has proven he can play in this system at a high level. And there's Devlin. It might only be me and "Oscar" that believe in Devlin, but he fits the system as well.

I'm still not convinced that given the proper opportunity, Devlin turns out to be better than Moore **AND** Tannehill.

Devlin's rose to every challenge from High School on. He's learned, progressed and most importantly, WON GAMES everywhere he's played.

So if Tannehill isn't the real deal? We'll still get there. Philbin's building a Team and he keeps bringing in players that fit that scheme. Plug in Moore and turn Devlin loose!

Pretty Soon Ireland and Philbin will have built a team strong enough for Cleo Lemon to take deep into the playoffs!

Greg,

This will be Tannehill's 3rd "FULL" season in Sherman's offense(1 and 1/2 in college) as a starting qb. So 18-22 tds and no more than 15 picks would be a huge leap forward.

Ideally, I would like to see him throw at least 25 tds this year. That would mean a definite playoff appearance and we've closed the gap between Patriots to 2gms or les. Last season, the gap was 5 huge games.

Odin if Garrard had stayed healthy Devlin most likely would not be on the team. He would have ended up on the practice squad if he was eligible and if he's so talented I think a team would have scooped him off there. Just my opinion.

i think the fact that he has been in this offense for a couple years showed with his play last year. he obviously knew what he was doing and didnt make many bad throws or decisions. the fact that he played in the same offense for 1 and 1/2 years in college is irrelevant when you are looking at his progression as a qb in the NFL. NFL defenses are so much more complex that i would think you would be starting from scratch with a learning curve. i think you are going to see a big difference this year in his play with some receivers that can get some separation.

Looks like Dumervil will sign with Ravens as per Mike Klis and Marky Mark on Facebook said.

ravens still damn good

Greg,

Also, Tannehill gets too much of the blame for A&M's 2011 season. IO just looked back at the Aggies 2011 season. The problem was not scoring points, the problem was the defense let them down to often also.

Many of their wins were high scoring shootouts, and so were their losses. At some points when your offense seems to run a little cold, the defense is responsible for stepping up too.

Im glad I have now looked back on the Aggies 2011 season. Or I never would have paid any attention to this.

Yo Oscar !! Can you seriously blame these realistic fans for having negative feelings towards this franchise. Let's see shall we last Super Bowl title=40 yrs ago last Super Bowl appearance 29 years ago last AFC title game appearance 21 years do you understand the frustration Oscar do you !!

We understand PERFECTLY!

Maybe it's you that has the problem, check websters for, Fair Weather Fan".

It'll say: "Look In The Mirror".

(While your at it, wipe that stuff off your upper lip!)

yesterday he gets most of the blame for that season cause he was always awful in 4th quarter

Hey ALL!

My HOTTIE just arrived! She is looking FINE!!! And READY!!! Yeah! Got to RUN!

I'll be back in 15 minutes.

CYA LOL!!!

Well, guys, Im out.

Odin's here to cut, paste, and endlessly dribble again. Have a great evening guys. LOL...

PS:

Odin will also now drivel in response to my post saying he cuts, pastes, and drivels.

COUNT ON IT! LOL...

I think DJ Swearinger will slide down to the 3rd round. Just can't picure all those teams drafting a safety in the first two rounds, plus he is considered a bit shorter AND slower than ideal. I foresee at least 4 prospects getting drafted before him. Aggresive player and a hard-hitter nonetheless, he would be real value for a 3rd rounder.

Shamarko and Williams both look like interesting alternatives too!

Honey badger is the man!
Legalize it!!
Sad if we waste a 1st round pick on a O Lineman.... Where did Pouncey get us?
If Pouncey wasn't on the roster , we still go 7 & 9.
We need a serious play maker with the 1st pick.

Go Canes & Heat today!!!

I never thought Dumervil was a good fit for the defense anyhow. He seems to have plateaued and in decline AND I keep forgetting we have Vernon for that role. We'll never know what that guy can do until we give him the chance but 3.5 sacks last year in limited time is pretty darn good.

Posted by: Jcb | March 24, 2013 at 04:57 PM

Seriously, man, with our 2012 oline problems? Without Pouncey, were 4-12, and possibly looking at drafting a qb 1st rd. Tannehill get a career ending injury. LOL...

Without Mike Pouncey, Tannehill becomes a Vince Wilfork jersey stain. LOL...

wilforks wife got punked

pats got vollmer back, didnt make my day

Glad the dumervil saga is over...overhyped DE that drew way too much attention..now miami could move foward with the draft....!!!

no first sign grimes and get albert, then draft

Lookin like Winston and Grimes to close out FA. If we can ink those two would be a damn good offseason and will allow us to attack BPA throughout the draft. Still would need a D-End to play oppo Wake, but this draft is loaded with those types of players (Tank Carradine is my preference). First 3 picks would be DE, CB, OT/OG in whatever order. Thats unless a stud at another position slides down to somewhere he shouldnt.

screw albert...I would not give the chiefs more draft picks on a draft rich with oline talent like this one is when you can keep your draft picks and get a quality Tackle and not to mention offering up another multiyear deal which may be pay him more than 8 mil a year...

As far as grimes, i still want to see if he will be 100% healthy which has not been confirmed as of yet...my gut says he will resign with falcons in the end!!!

no thanks on winston. we have zero corners

Martin at left (worrisome) and who at right? Our corner depth is probably better than our tackle depth right now. Want Tannehill to succeed? Best to keep him upright!

yes phillie go get albert for a 2nd rd pick. sign grimes. draft rhodes.

If thats the direction, im cool with it. Lot of money (and picks) to be paid for an older (still young enough tho) LT, with injury concerns of his own.

Good news, we won't waste a contract on tweener Dumervil, he signs with Ravens.

You have to admit the troll manipulates daShe and odi like a jack in the box.

You misinterpret us responding to your ignorance as some sort of control?

That's laughable, by YOUR OWN dumb standard then, that means **WE CONTROL YOU** when you post to us, about us, or in response to us. Duh, you didn't think THAT one through, Eh?

You should SERIOUSLY try to get someone/anyone to help you think before you post. And I mean that. All this back and forth on the blog aside, you make YOURSELF look as dumb, if not dumber than we all do COMBINED-LOL....(and we make you look like a COMPLETE TARD-LOL!)

Talk about **CONTROL**, we MAKE you fight more than half the battle for us........Ooooooooooouch!

Bad puppy.........BAD - Woof Woof-ROTFLMAO!

At least **THIS SIGN NAME** fits you.

If there is such a place as Dumbo Land, I'm sure your one of the "Founding Fathers" LOL...
====================================

BTW - Still no comments on getting caught in that Great BIG Lie last night?

Yeah, that's what I thought. That's your style, effing with everybody and getting caught lying and changing sign in names-You're a Puke-LMAO!

ValHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaLLa!!!!

Bottom line is this Philbin has a plan and direction. You can play 500 ball in the NFL by just showing up (seriously the Pats have been on top for awhile but since spygate what have they done?) The rest of the division has changed its panties as much as we have! Philbin has a plan and barring any bad luck jinxes or so on the Dolphins are heading in the right direction! Go Jeff, Joe and Go Dolphins!!!

Armando Writes:

=======================================================Well Armando your right which is why the Dolphins are spending $8M to bring back Matt Moore. The Dolphins are going in the right direction. The only wholes are on the offensive line and defensive secondary which can be fixed with the Draft. The Dolphins still have money to spend on those needs and some others.

Good thing is, everyone pretty much is in agreemnt that we need a corner (or 2), a tackle (and also a good swing guard), a pass rusher oppo Wake, a RB to challenge/replace Thomas, a #2 TE, and a safety to push Clemmons. Will be interesting to see how we get there to say the least.

Posted by: dusty bottoms | March 24, 2013 at 05:20 PM

No dusty,

They want a 2nd rd this and a 2nd RD next year...at some point miami needs to to stay away from trading picks for players and develop their own talent..and thats not by feeding other teams more draft picks so they can fix their needs the way it needs to be done..and thats in the draft..

Theres a reason why KC is looking to trade Albert, and that is so they could load up on more picks and save money to replace him at the same time in one year...thats good business for KC, but not if your miami!!!

They have 5 picks in the first three rounds...USE THEM TO DRAFT FUTURE PLAYERS!!!

Dusty,
if youre going to give up draft picks why not just trade up? Whats the point in trading for an injured LT that will want to get paid? Its a back injury of all things.. Trade up, draft a top LT and pay him what a rookie would get paid..

you have already stated your opinion on albert many times dusty, you are not going to persuade everybody else just because you keep repeating the same arguments over and over again. MANY posters here believe he doesn't deserve the money nor the picks, that's the plain truth.

That Explains It.

Odin Has Been Handing The Troll His Ass. Troll Sees Dashi And Troll Automatically Loses It.

Odin I Blame you For Oscar Losing It Again.

Joeckle, Fisher or Johnson get my 1 and 2 (from indy) and a rookie deal for 5 years. Albert does not get my 2 this year and 2 next year and a heavy salary. Trading up for a tackle means u will have ur QB and LT under manageable salaries for a good portion of Wallace's slightly inflated contract. Thats how u manage the cap!

Pavlov Is Always Working. The Guy Is In Here 24/7!!

Dashi you can be in denial all you want, but at the end of the day those are the cold hard facts about this franchise. And that's a true story Dashi face the cold hard facts !!

I'm not sticking up for Dashi, he's a big boy.

But Taggart, WTF? All you're doing is focusing on the past. The past is DEAD. When you don't bury the Dead, it begins to stink.

And when you focus on the past(like you do)you're perspectives, opinions and general overall outlook STINKS!

In short Taggart, YOU STINK! LOL.... (sorry man, but YOU KNOW that's the TRUTH ;)
=============================

Check my next post for further verifications......

1st rd#12 Lane Johnson, OT Okl
2nd rd#42 Alex Okafor, DE Texas

7th rd#217 Everett Dawkins, DT Fl St
7th rd#224 Corey Broomfield, CB Miss St
7th rd#250 Quinn Sharp, P/K Okl St
Well I know u guys will distroy my mock draft crying about this pick or that pick because that's what most of u guys r good at so Hav at it.

Its time to just sit back and relax guys and let it play out. Ireland is finally making some nice moves in my opinion. I m not overly bothered by the lack of someone in FA to slot in opposite Wake; I really think Vernon can fulfil that role. We NEED corners and OL. Sort these areas out, and add some sneaking impact players during the draft and this team is going places! I think Tannethrill is going to be pretty good, circa top 10. Never elite I don't think, but good enough...kinda like Aikman (or however you spell it lol)

We dont need him to be elite (top 3). Flacco isn't, Eli isn't. Good quarterbacks win superbowls too, not just the elite.

Yet there they are devoting their energies to feeding Troll Land and acting like a jack in the box at the snap of a trolls finger.

Seriously, how can you call anyone immature, when you can't even man up enough to use a "Regular" sign in name?

You obviously know a lot about The Dolphins and Pro Football. I suspect you could even be a very good poster.

But you choose the cowardly route and for some reason, apparently get off on Fvcking with Good Poster who make significant contributions here.

It's as simple as this, "If you're not part of the solution, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM".

Sorry if the truths hurts, but you make your bed......

What else can anyone say............?

Different day, same dumbass garbage posts by a Doucebag Troll

Without Jake Long, Tannehill becomes a grass strained jersey every week

St Louis with Jake Long, he becomes a soft shell protector of his former skills at LT.

Scotty
You mean the same Tannehill that did have Long for the last games of the season? Or the Moore without Long the year before when he didnt finish that season? Team got along just fine.. move on. The Fins certainly have

NO STADIUM HANDOUTS FOR THE 4.4 BILLION DOLLAR MAN.

Leave him alone you big meanie!

if scotty wants long back then so be it.

if scotty wants s.smith back then so be it.

if scotty wants Ted Ginn and his family back then so be it.

if scotty likes to watch this team continue to lose, THEN SO BE IT!

Yeah dont make tourist pay for stadium improvements that the locals would reap the benefits from with jobs and the increased business from events that would take place there.. Vote No for economic improvement for South Florida that wouldnt cost them a penny.. dee dah dee

Not only do you have many sign in names, you single-handedly shut the blog down for two full days by making repetitive multi-page posts of garbage endlessly all night long.

And you are calling others immature?

(no need to try and back track and say that wasn't you, you forgot that you even admitted it shortly after...besides nobody is retarded enough to write like you do)
