Dolphins operating by familiar script but will finale be different?

Dolphins fans are reinvigorated these days. I know this because the emails to me saying as much have tripled. The traffic on this blog has multiplied the past three weeks. I have more people following me on twitter than ever before.

The Dolphins are seeing the fruits of this excitement also in some areas.

As I write in my column in today's Miami Herald the sales of season tickets to new fans is proceeding nicely.

But ...

Yes, folks, there's seemingly always a but. The renewal sales are not doing well. Season ticket holders that spent their money last season are not so far buying in as well this offseason despite the apparent upgrades in free agency and the hope that some of the club's upcoming 11 draft picks will be contributors to turning the Dolphins into winners for the first time since 2008.

I have a theory why this is -- one I've shared with Dolphins CEO Mike Dee and others. I believe Dolphins fans who have seen much heartache and pain the past decade and have gotten their hopes up multiple times only to have them dashed aren't going to operate on sheer faith anymore.

Many want to see results before they invest in tickets again.

And here's the thing:

The Dolphins, who obviously want to make the point that things are different this time, are actually following a very familiar script this offseason in telling you why the results in 2013 will be different. It's uncanny, really.

So, bottom line, will things be different in 2013? I'm not sure. I think so.

I love the Mike Wallace acquisition. I don't know that the linebacker additions will produce as many big plays as the Dolphins hope. I believe the Dolphins will be just fine without Jake Long or Sean Smith because, frankly, neither player actually ever won a game for the Dolphins. I really would like the team to add a proven and experienced pass-rusher while one is still out there.

But I still have questions about the quarterback position. Everyone, including coach Joe Philbin, this offseason is telling me Ryan Tannehill is the real deal. He's going to be very good, they say. There are no warning signs for him failing, they say.

If that's the case, everything will be fine with the 2013 Dolphins.

But I simply am not certain that will be the case. I saw some good but some not-so-good play out of Tannehill in 2013 even as other rookie QBs were playing like Pro Bowl players. So I think the jury is still out and I'm not ready to endorse him as the real thing yet.

And if Tannehill isn't the real deal?

Suffice to say we've seen what will happen play out before.

Does Ross really think his team can improve without getting a real GM?

TOURIST TAX MONEY NEEDS TO GO TO HELP POLICE AND SCHOOLS... NOT THE 4.4 BILLION DOLLAR MAN

Ross is a devout Republican that is against raising income taxes to help the needy but wants the needy of Dade County to help his football team? WTF hypocrite??

After the Marlin fiasco how stupid does Ross think we are?

I didn't move to Miami i moved to plantation and wow you talk sh*t to me because i want to know how to get season tix well im sorry for asking i thought maybe fellow dolphin fans would be a little more helpful and welcoming

Ross will/can upgrade the stadium himself.

Republicans need to stop their assault on the middle class.

Dennis, welcome to South Florida. It's a land of transients, immigrants, druggies and strippers...it's basically a highly uneducated and low class place.

Smack a roof on that puppy so i can sit in the shade, and my wife's (+)(+) arent so sweaty on the way home!

ROSS IS A WORSE OWNER THEN LORIA

Dennis there r thousands of newyorkers who Hav move down to Florida and brought there tax and spend socialism with them. They r jet fans and trolls. They come on to this site to try to ruin it and succeed more often than not.

No one goes to Dolphin games anyway. 20,000 a game?

Thank you harmon and im already starting to see it

Vote no,

I would love to have you over my house for one of my pool parties. Mosty just us manly men talking about art and whatnot. My pool has lovely statues and fountains with well endowed male genitalia throughout my garden. The hedges are neatly trimmed and the bushes are banned on the property. Im sure you would have a great time!

Ross puts a terrible product on the field. Why would anyone help him?

I know about the 1888finstixs i just wanted to know if there is another way to get them

Braman thinks Ross and the team should foot the entire bill for the stadium makeover. "He can afford to do it himself," Braman said.
If owners of professional franchises are not willing to accept the risk of building a stadium that will sufficiently meet their desire for an increase in revenue, especially in an era when franchise values are skyrocketing, what risk are they willing to accept?

"This is still welfare for a multi-billionaire," Braman told WSVN News in Miami. "It’s wrong."

Mayor Ed MacDougall is creating a website slated to launch Wednesday, www.stopthestadiummadness.us. MacDougall said he decided to launch the website after speaking with residents of Cutler Bay as well as mayors of other cities who oppose the stadium upgrades.

"It's Marlins 2 revisited," Braman told the Business Journal. "With the Marlins we had to be a world city and we can’t without a stadium, and now he [Stephen Ross] is saying we need this because we need the Super Bowl. It's wrong. It's still a subsidy. It's still welfare for a multi-billionaire."

My pool parties are FAB-U-LOUS!

“This is welfare for a multi-billionaire,” Braman told CBS4′s Eliott Rodriguez. “People have been struggling to keep their jobs and their homes, and here’s a guy who’s worth $4.4 billion and he’s asking for welfare to remodel his stadium.”

Braman? Screw his word. Biggest crook in South Florida.

Steve Ross save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!!

Why didn't the Ravens resign Ellerbe if they had 8.5 million a year to give Dumervil. Free agency is a weird weird thing.

ross does have a lot of nerve asking for handouts after 4 consecutive losing seasons. Horrible timing lol

braman was right about the marlins and he's right about the dolphins

Dumervil - gone
Osi U - gone
Volmer - gone

Big moves this weekend....none by the Fins.

Need a T, 2 CB's, DE and TE.

Hope they land at least 2 of these in FA to enable them to work from a position of strength in the Draft. Always prefer to draft by 'best available' vs. 'need.'

Raven's were so busy trying to get under the cap, re-sign Flacco and trading Boldin, they never thought Ellerby would leave. Sources were stating that Baltimore was completely shocked that Ellerby left. Baltimore was trying to get far enough under the cap to make an offer and Ellerby took the Fins offer before Baltimore even got off the ground.

go finssssss

Zonk the POS Troll, save the blog, DIE

jpao,

Many free agents have came to Miami amd left without a contract the past 2 weeks. It looks like we are done spending serious money. I really hope we draft well.

they were shocked cause of the contract, miami overpayed big time ravens still damn good

Always prefer to draft by 'best available' vs. 'need.'

We are probably done with FA until after the draft when prices will start going down. Besides they've already done plenty in FA, can't rebuild your whole team through FA in one offseason.

better find least one corner in free agency, we have none

Rhan,

The only issue I have is they said they have a back up plan if they lose Long.

The draft is the back up plan? Hell I could of thought of that..lol.

Gotta let it play out. Albert could be that plan. Joeckle, Fisher or Johnson could be that plan. Winston to the right could be that plan. Gotta wait and see.

dusty,

I'm not sure what is going on with Grimes. Teams must be waiting until he gets a clean bill of health. Not much left out there after him. Tracy Porter maybe???

ill take those first 4, no way on winston

i want grimes, be huge. and yes i heard samething, hes waiting till he feels hes 100 percent

Technically, Nnamdi still out there.

sam shields

Grimes is the guy to get tho, IMO.

Unless u wanna go balls to the wall and go after Revis (which i would loooooove). Gonna be a fun month!

Well Grimes is probably waiting it out so he can get top dollar. Be surprised if Ireland paid over 5/yr.

revis would never happen, jets will deal him to nfc if at all

Why does everyone except for me see the potential in RT. As a person who plays football I have seen the foundation and groundwork made last year by Philbin to make a no-nonsense club and a club that is all about team. I hate to hear fans that can never be satisfied. Miami was once the upper echelon in the sporting world and as there is a time period of success there is a time period of rebuilding and failure a cycle all teams have to face even the gloating patriots that now realize that there window is closed along with the jets bills and ravens and other teams that had a stranglehold on the league. RT with no weapons at all last year and with defenses quoted "literally sitting down in coverage because of receivers lack of getting open" was still able to lead in many areas in the NFL and made adjustment each week even with coming out early with not much reps of being a qb in college. As do other qb's he has made some mistakes but he did the best he could with what he had as well as Coach Philbin. So before fans go licking the colts redskins and seahawks balls realize that they either drafted well or had a key veteran to help the team transition smoothly with their rookie qb. With the evolution of the Read-Option RT will be even more successful along with having his weapons now because we saw how much more damage he could do using it in limited looks given he was a receiver and is physical enough to take hits. There is much more that can be said but this is a small amount of proof that he is the future and if u are to busy watching other people you want be able to appreciate what you have. I have been a frustrated fan for the years ive learned and love this game but there is nothing better than sticking it through and supporting your team until they arise from the ashes and dominate for years as everyone else becomes the laughing stock of the league. FinFan for life

nice novel

If u give enough, it could. I tend to agree that it wont but its not impossible. They are, after all the J-E-T-S (suck, suck, suck)

The Reevis thing is crazy. Bucs talking about $15 million a year plus a 1st and 2nd rd pick.

It ain't like he's a franchise QB.

hes close rick, primetime shut down one side of the field, revis does that also. my opinion its not smart for bucs to do cause they arent close, a team like denver should do it so it would put them over the top

I'll take Winston at RT. If I told you we could draft a top 10 tackle next year....you wouldn't do it? Really based on what?

Thats kind of what I was saying dusty. I can somewhat see the money but the Bucs are somewhat like us. Giving away that many picks handcuffs your future.

With Revis, this year we make the playoffs and possibly win a gm or two (depending on RT17). That pick would likely be 20-30 somewhere. Will we find a lockdown corner like Revis there? U can still take Rhodes, Trufant or whoever this year. Cost is steep, id likely say no to paying it, but it would be a move that i would love if it did happen. Ballsy type move that we havent seen many of as of late.

Aw Armando. Stirring things up again, I see? I've seen you in some of your other posts, talking about how solid RT played last year. And now you aren't sure?

Yes, some of the other big name rookie Quarter Backs had more successful seasons and every one of them have a better supporting cast of receivers, too.

That game where Tannehill passed for 431 yards was only 2 yards shy of the rookie QB passing record set by the Colts when they played us last year.

I think the acquisition of all these key receivers are not so much a testament of how good they expect Ryan to be in the coming years. I think it's more likely that they want to give him the tools to succeed so that they can really find out if he has the goods or not.

He supposedly has the tangibles, intelligence, athleticism and can make all the throws. They are basically taking away any excuses he might have to fail by giving him a full array of receiver talent to see if he lives up to his potential.

Regardless, if he is successful or not, these players still fit what Philbin is looking for in his West Coast Offensive game plan.

If Tannehill does not work out, we will be back at square one where the QB position is concerned, but at least we will have the receivers in place for the right QB to take us to the next level.

I would like to think Ryan is not going to disappoint and will show steady progress each year and become a top 10 QB in the league.

Grimes isn't waiting, teams are waiting on Grimes to recover. How do you offer a contract to someone who can't pass a physical? Some never recover from an achilles. Marino was never the same afterwards. If a CB loses just a step they go from 1st string to 3rd string.

Anybody know what Volmer signed for?? That will shake out the price for Smith and Winston. Interested to see what he got compared to Long.

All true Rhan. Although i think the guy that did Marino's achilles used a steak knife!

Possibly from Shula's!
