Dolphins operating by familiar script but will finale be different?

Dolphins fans are reinvigorated these days. I know this because the emails to me saying as much have tripled. The traffic on this blog has multiplied the past three weeks. I have more people following me on twitter than ever before.

The Dolphins are seeing the fruits of this excitement also in some areas.

As I write in my column in today's Miami Herald the sales of season tickets to new fans is proceeding nicely.

But ...

Yes, folks, there's seemingly always a but. The renewal sales are not doing well. Season ticket holders that spent their money last season are not so far buying in as well this offseason despite the apparent upgrades in free agency and the hope that some of the club's upcoming 11 draft picks will be contributors to turning the Dolphins into winners for the first time since 2008.

I have a theory why this is -- one I've shared with Dolphins CEO Mike Dee and others. I believe Dolphins fans who have seen much heartache and pain the past decade and have gotten their hopes up multiple times only to have them dashed aren't going to operate on sheer faith anymore.

Many want to see results before they invest in tickets again.

And here's the thing:

The Dolphins, who obviously want to make the point that things are different this time, are actually following a very familiar script this offseason in telling you why the results in 2013 will be different. It's uncanny, really.

So, bottom line, will things be different in 2013? I'm not sure. I think so.

I love the Mike Wallace acquisition. I don't know that the linebacker additions will produce as many big plays as the Dolphins hope. I believe the Dolphins will be just fine without Jake Long or Sean Smith because, frankly, neither player actually ever won a game for the Dolphins. I really would like the team to add a proven and experienced pass-rusher while one is still out there.

But I still have questions about the quarterback position. Everyone, including coach Joe Philbin, this offseason is telling me Ryan Tannehill is the real deal. He's going to be very good, they say. There are no warning signs for him failing, they say.

If that's the case, everything will be fine with the 2013 Dolphins.

But I simply am not certain that will be the case. I saw some good but some not-so-good play out of Tannehill in 2013 even as other rookie QBs were playing like Pro Bowl players. So I think the jury is still out and I'm not ready to endorse him as the real thing yet.

And if Tannehill isn't the real deal?

Suffice to say we've seen what will happen play out before.

The only way you sign Grimes is if the contract gets canceled if he doesn't make the line up. Otherwise you are gambling on throwing millions away for nothing. It's not likely Grimes will be 100% next season.

So Vote No your argument is that hotel taxes go to police and teachers right?
So if they raised the hotel tax 1% with the teachers and police getting the other 6%, why does it matter.. otherwise they wont raise the hotel tax and theyd still be getting paid the same.. hmmm

As far as the Jets not trading Reevis in the division, who knows.
They gotta get what thay can get. The sticking point with the Bucs is they don't want to give up the #13 this year. They've offered a 1st and 2nd next year and of course the Jets aren't biting...yet.
The thing is though, Ireland would never pay $15 million for a corner. They probably haven't gave it the first bit of thought.

The medical technology between the time Marino tore his ACL to now isn't even comparable. Talking apples and oranges here.

Bobbyd you are not even on the same page. Marino tore his achilles, a totally different injury. Much more difficult for a CB than a QB.

Why do you all think Grimes is still available? It is still too soon to determine how well he is recuperating.

If there were no concerns about Grimes physical status, he'd have been signed the first week of FA.

I dont think it will take $15 to sign him long term (probably 12-14) but thats not important, and i agree ireland probably hasnt paid no mind. But i think he should do his due diligence. Revis eliminates who ever u want him to from the other teams offense, the best one, u pick, done! Shut down, eliminated! Would u rather have Rhodes at 12, or Revis (and giving them a 2nd or 3rd next year)? Im taking Revis, the best corner in the game! Still only what 27-28?

BTW way, Grimes was a UDFA. It is funny how you guys love the acorns when they work out, but Ireland is a loser for trying.

mattyfrombc, Just Vote No knows less about politics then football. Idiots like him spout the same nonsense when they don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Florida Tourist taxes, by Florida LAW, cannot be used for teachers or police officers. It can be levied for Tourist related projects and Construction, including for Pro Sports Teams. This guy is just another blithering moron who has no clue.

20 minutes to CANES HOOPS AND MARCH MADNESS

Ireland's doing his thing. He will find a couple more acorns this year (likely a TE or safety in rnds 3-5) he just needs to hit big on those first 3 picks this year for everything to fall into place.

Actually one source reported more than a week ago that Grimes to Cleveland was a done deal pending a physical.

Funny how this poster Rhan compares Marino's injury to Grimes 3 posts back then when I tell him technology has advanced he writes you can't compare Marino to Grimes. Huh?? You are the one who bought up the comparison.

Maybe it was Omar!

LOl Phillie. It was actually IBN. It's still up on their website.

Grimes DONE DEAL IN CLEVELAND (Pending Physical)

As IBN reported 48hours ago, Grimes was in the process of getting his wife and family on board with decision to become a Cleveland Brown and we can confirm tonight the Browns have a deal in "Principle" with the former All-Pro corner who was injured last year (Pending look at his Achilles) Solid signing for the Browns who will now make noise in that tough AFC North division. Those who hated and said Grimes would not be a Brown.... How u holding up tonight?

Bobbyd is it true you were odins hottie date last night?

Thanks BobbyD for educating me on that topic as well..

Rick that story is from a week and a half ago. I wouldn't put much stock in it since nothing has been done.

I know Lars.

The Heat are very near their 26th straight. 2 minutes to go. 28 pt lead.

Draft Landry Jones

Not impressed with the last 8 days of no pick ups

And im not impressed with clueless fans thinking that everything should be solved in FA at a more expensive cost.

Not impressed with ignorant bloggers.

I have a funny feeling Miami will be targeting Monte Ball for the rwo headed running attack which will make this offense elite

I can clinically confirm that:(

Dumervil signed For 5yr/$35Mil.

The Guy Will Be 35 When the Contract Is Done.

To Many Years. Good Job By Ireland.

Rather See O.Vernon Get More Snaps.

Dumervil Was Worth A 3 Year Deal At Most.

Will The Fins Go After A.Smith Or E.Winston Before The Draft?

This Would Be A Good Week for Ireland To Shore Up Another Position On The Team. Get 1 CB or Sign 2 Linemen. To A 1 Or 2 Year Deal.

Florida Gulf Coast to Sweet 16. Wow, what a story so far. I never heard of these guys before upsetting Georgetown.!

Florida Gulf Coast wins it all, there will be a movie playing near you! LOL...

People y'all seem to forget the one difference that matters on the current team: Coach Philbin. If he stays here with us he will succeed. Give him time.

This is 2nd time after winning SB that Ravens sign a player named Elvis. Fans BETTER hope Dumervil turns out better than Grbac.

Florida Gulf Coast plays UF next, May take a Florida team to beat these kids. If they get by the Gators, I want to see a FGC/Hurricanes finals.

How ironic would this be? FGC beat Hurricanes their first game of the season. At this time neither teams where even a blip on the college basketball power map.

So who the hell could have forecast a national championship match when both teams met for the first game of both teams seasons. Wow!

I am optimistic about QB Tennehill. he was a rookie with no help from offense and he still did a good job. QBs need at least 3 years to develop. Our offense would have suck last year even with Tom Brady at QB.
Note: I am worried about the LT position, very important to protect the QB and time to throw the ball.

Philbin is as doomed as Sparano was with Ireland as his GM.

I forcasted FGCU to win it all before the start of the tourney.

PS Please keep up with current bracket predictions on ESPN.COM

Scotty is as hopless as a one night stand prositute on her way to abuse and clinical deppression.

This Would Be A Good Week for Ireland To Squirt His Load On The Team.

FGCU Naples beat Miami so you know they're good.

Interesting diagnoses.

YG,

FCGU has a good program. The Florida game will be interesting. Lots of people here in Central Florida choosing to go to FGCU and UCF instead of USF,UF,and FSU because their closer.

Actually UCF has the largest enrollment in the state.

Posted by: Dr. Astute | March 24, 2013 at 09:29 PM

FGCU:

Andy, Andy, Andy...............

I don't know their coach's last name, but after the post game celebration the whole nation knows it's:

Andy, Andy, Andy.......................

mike,

FGCU not in Naples. In Ft Myers. Close though.

I think Rick Pitinos son coaches FIU. And didnt Marques Jordan go to UCF?

Looks like the Canes could be headed for their own "REDEMPTION TOUR" if its a Canes vs FGCU title game. It'll probably be the only game I'll root against FGCU. LOL...

OK Ft Myers

Coach Rob Chudzinski and defensive coordinator Ray Horton are among the members of the Browns who spent time with Grimes on Saturday. Chudzinski and other key figures of the franchise then took a Saturday night flight to the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix.

Grimes, 29, also visited the Miami Dolphins on Friday, the team announced, and the Atlanta Falcons would reportedly like to re-sign him. However, as Grimes continues to rehabilitate from a torn Achilles’ tendon, his suitors are still evaluating the situation.

“There is no offer from any team yet,” the source said. “Everyone wants to get a comfort level first.”

Thanks for clearing that up!

Would someone notify me if we can ever beat the Browns?

On Grimes I mean.

mike,

Something happened with Marques Jordan(mike's son. He led Addidas to cancel its contracts with UCF because he refused not wear his Nike shoes, out of respect to his father, during a UCF game.

Marques Jordan eventually quit the team, but, its reported he still attends classes there.

Posted by: Scotty | March 24, 2013 at 09:45 PM

Browns Owner here,

you beat us!

Grimes is 29 and crippled.

yeah, I thought Marques was going to the NBA but now who knows?

YG, check out FGCU's Head coaches wife...
