Dolphins have eyes on Cyprien, Tourek Williams

Last week I guess I went on something of a mini blog rant about how the Dolphins need to do a better job of identifying, scouting and picking up local college talent because it's embarrassing when other NFL teams come into Miami's backyard and find nuggets the Dolphins missed.

Well, I'm happy to report the Dolphins are at least taking steps toward making sure that doesn't happen this year. Today at the Florida International University and University of Miami Pro Days in Southwest Miami and Coral Gables, the Dolphins were out in full force.

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland attended both Pro Days. He and New England coach Bill Belichick were the only GM or coach types that did that, apparently.

The Dolphins had five people at FIU and they had their eyes set on safety Jonathan Cyprien and DE Tourek Williams -- two undervalued but solid prospects.

Cyprien, the better known of the two, has flown up draft boards since the Senior Bowl. He did nothing to stop that rise as he reportedly ran the 40 in 4.5 twice. He benched 225 pounds 18 times. He showed he has the measurables to go with a solid tape.

Williams was also quite impressive, if not moreso. He ran the 40 in 4.6 seconds on some watches at 253 pounds.

Dang.

I frankly don't know enough about this player. So I suppose I will do what other NFL teams might be doing. They're checking the tape of him because that's a freakish time for that size man.

Defensive back Junior Mertile was the fastest player at the Pro Day. He ran a 4.3 time on some stopwatches. According to FIU reporter Pete Pelegrin, the Dolphins also administered a Wonderlic test to the player.

F4l,

Read Your Post. And You Will Answer Yourself.

So Pete Rose Was A Role Player?

Like I Told Carl. I Understand The Context. The Example Was Wrong.

The Ichiro And Jeter Comment. Dashi Was Using Contemporaries.

And Neither Ichiro Or Jeter Can Hold Rose's Jock!!

Ichiro Is Good! But His MLB Career Was/Is To Short.

And Jeter Is The Most Over Rated Baseball Player Ever!! Seriously!! Never Understood The Love For Jeter!! Just Cause He Is A Yankee!! We Have To Idolize Jeter!

To Any Baseball Fan Comparing Rose, To Anything Other Than a G.O.A.T. Is Blasphemy!!

You Don't Compare Mike Miller To Larry Bird!!

You Don't Compare Chad Henne With Dan Marino!!

I Gave You An Example Of What Hartline Could Be. Juan Pierre. A Good Lead off Hitter, Nothing Special.

The comparison was not players, it was comparing singles in baseball to first downs in football.

Let me see if I can get Sesame Street to do a 9 week skit on it and maybe ESPN will air it and maybe, who knows, you'll get it.

I am sorry to say, I grossly overestimated the general comprehension skills of many of you. At this point, I'd rather not talk football with you but instead devote my energies to having your voting rights revoked.

By the way on my 9:23 post I meant OJ McDuffie the Football player drafted in 93 out of Penn St. Not Arthur McDuffie the Insurance Salesman killed by Miami Police in 1980 touching off City wide riots that left 18 dead, just thought it important to clarify before someone misinterpreted.

Also, you may consider suing your grade school teachers for mal practice.

Still, a horrible analogy. Find something else.

I will gladly offer myself as a witness in court to testify you are victims of mal practice :)

The comparison to McDuffie is more on target.

Wished we could compare Hartline to McDuffie. McDuffie had 8 recieving tds in both his 3rd and 4th years. Hartline has 6 total tds in 4yrs.

So you see, Hartline cant even hold McDuffie's jockstrap. Only Dolphin wr Hartline can be compared to is Ted Ginn Jr. Ginn had 6 total tds his 1st 4yrs as a dolphin too.

Hartline seems to be a bigger slower Ted Ginn minus the family. LOL...

We have always had little patience with BS. If We know the Truth, We go for It.

Carl,

TAKE MY WORD FOR IT!!! IF BELICHEK SIGNS HARTLINE, YG FOOL WILL NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE THE SUZBjECT AGAIN! HE WILL JUST PUT YOU DOWN TO AVOID THE SUBJECT!!!!

Oscar,

You Know How self-centered The Sociopath Is!!

When Has The US Ever Dictated Anything To Fidel?

Never.

-----------------------------------------------------

"When People want to deceive Themselves, they sure will Do so."

Agreed.

Again, Dashi Is Just Saying His Theory. From what I See.

But If The Pope Can Retire!! Why Can't Fidel!!

The one thing we can count on is Irescum to make the wrong decisions.

Oh my bad, Ginn had only 5 tds in 4yrs as a dolphin. He's had 1 rec td in SF. LOL...

@9:26.

Agreed. Hartline Looks Like A Sniffer!!

More Like A Meth Head. Hartline Looks Like He Drops Peyote And Walks Around The Desert Aimlessly!!

The draft is so overated compared to free agency.Look at the stats folks of how many teams number 1,2nds and 3rd ever even make the team.Free Agency and trading for players is the way to win now!

My bad again, Ginn had 5 tds in 3yrs as a Dolphin. So he and Hartline's 3yrs Dolphin td are exactly the same.

Hartline's 1 td in 2012 placed him 1 td ahead of Ginns career Dolphin rec total. But Ginn did have 2 k/o and 1 punt return td. Again placing him ahead of Hartline. LOL...

Broder!

If they want to sign Hartline, is it too much of a stretch to say Philbin wants to keep him? A veteran with decades of professional experience who has coached the very best players finds value in him, yet a few bloggers with zero experience in anything NFL related know better.

Ok. Got it.

I would love to see any of you go head to head with Ireland or Philbin on football on a nationally aired forum. Is there any doubt they would leave all of us in the dust after 7 seconds? Let's not kid ourselves here. For all practical purposes, we know nothing.

YG @9:37,

In Yrs. 3 and 4 of OJ's career (96-97) JJ had dismantled the team Offensively allowing a still game Fryar to walk over 1 Mil. a Yr. You can make a case Shula set this in motion in 95 when he traded Ingram/K.Jackson for a 12 pack of Beer essentially to G.B.

Leaving Marino very little to work with on O but it was still Marino tossing the ball and he was going to thread the needle to McDuffie right into the teeth of D while Hartline has played with 3 QB's that together don't equal one Dan (hoping we at least get Flacco with Tannehill at this point)

Your talking a specific ERA were Marino played with what he had and targeted McDuffie but at least even then we had the HYBRID Oronde, underachieving Troy Drayton and Byars, Tony Martin sprinkled into the mixes. NO WAY you compare what McDuffie had in a QB and teammates to what we've seen the Fins saddled with of late.

I have never heard so much whining about spending money from a perennial losing team. Its mind boggling.

You forgot to mention Sherman Carl. He's been around awhile too.

Carl,

We have not heard another word of resigning Hartline since the erroneous foxsports report. Could they have just been talking and trying to get Hartline to sign for less than #2 wr pay? Could it be maybe they dont think of Hartline as a legit #2?

Would it be too farfetched, considering we havent heard anything else on Hartline they say, screw you Brian we're not giving you #2 wr pay? The 2 day going on 3 day silence could suggest so.

Maybe, just maybe, Ireland/Philbin are considering Hartline's value no greater then #3 wr pay. You guys are the one's assuming right now that Hartline's a #2 wr.

Well said Carl. Ireland has noted that he and philbin are on the same page philosophically. Perhaps it is philbin who values hartline.

Carl,

We Understand What You Tried To Say.

The Problem Is Using Pete Rose. You Just Don't Compare Dan Marino To Anybody!! Even If You Are Only Talking About First Downs!!

Like I Said The Context Was Fine, The Example Wasn't.

Stop Acting Like A Diode.

------------------------------------

F4l,

I Actually Know The Sons Of 1 Of The Cops That Did That To McDuffie. The Victim not the Football Player.

Marino failed his wonderlic test. I think he's dumber then a doornob.

Carl and fin4life!! Sound rational!!

Being rational!! And reasonable!! And Logical!!

Not allowed here!!

What's!! Going!! On here??!!

Yesterday,

You mean you still haven't learned to not try to deduce things based on media rumors?

You really should sue your grade school teachers.

Let's see what happens, where he ends up. Let's see who does want him and who doesn't, that will speak volumes.

Posted by: fin4life | March 07, 2013 at 09:49 PM

Geesh, Im sick of the Hartline apologies. Why cant any of you consider that Hartline is exactly what his stats states that he is?

4yrs, 6tds. I guess you guys need 3-4 more years of apologizing for him before you finally see the light. You forget Im a dolfan and only want to see the best for my team too. I havent seen anything to suggest Hartline is a very good #1 nor #2 wr in this league.

Lets just keep being borderline at our skill positions. Lets just keep blaming the symtoms not the problem. We get better at this with each passing season and have been a dump of a football team for more than a decade now.

Posted by: Carl | March 07, 2013 at 09:59 PM

Just maybe its your grade school teachers that you should sue. Have they not taught you well that "ONE IS THE LONLIEST NUMBER"?

DID NOT YOU EVEN LISTEN TO THE SONG DECLARING THE SAME?

Hartline had a single scoring td in "16 GAMES".

One really is the lonliest number son. Maybe your grade school teachers should just sue you.

Yesterday,

Is Brandon Marshall a good receiver?

No receiver has had a great year on this team since...since...since...heck if I can remember.

It is a team game, you know? Or no?

How well did Larry Fitzgerald do without a star QB???

Is Larry Fitzgerald a good receiver?

Its more a QB game then a team game. And thats what has me worried.

YG,

You do have a point on rather Hartline will be a 2 or a 3.

If we do land Wallace or Jennings and resign Hartline they would start camp at 1 and 2.

It's totally possible though that one of the rookie wr's that we WILL draft could pick up the offense and move up the the depth chart by the end of preseason or sooner.

I think the trouble with that is it's an unknown. We may be forced to overpay Hartline a tad to insure continuity as I mentioned before.

hartline and wallace would be good combo, long shot but i hope miami finds away to get them

Dolfan Rick @ 08:06 PM,

Interesting observation. Although I don't believe any of the 4 players you mentioned will go top 15 anything is possible come actual draft day *Cough Darius Heyward Bey Cough*.

That being said, a couple of those guys may show to have been worthy of a choice in the top 15 with their actual play in the NFL.

I keep having flashbacks to Buffalo taking S Donte Whittner at 8. I don't know what Miami/Ireland will do at 12 but I can only hope thta the players I would like to be Fins are at least on the board when the Fins pick is up.

Cheers,

Maybe Philbin wants to keep Hartline so he won't need to look for 2 veterans to go along with whichever WR he drafts.
Hartline did not have the TD's but he moved the chains and maybe that's all Philbin wants from him.

6M/yr is steep, but if you don't give it to Hartline (someone you already know) you will have to give it to someone else who may not work out.

fin4life @ 7:40,

I agree, as of now I believe Elam goes in the last stanza of the first round.

I also agree with a few others that if Elam were to be had in the second round that would be a screaming deal!!!

I agree with Yesterday's Gone

Brian Hartline is at best a #3 receiver. That's just the way it is and his numbers reflect that. Now if Mike Wallace and a rookie speedster were in Miami, Hartline would benefit. That should be the objective in Miami; to bring in enough good receivers to help bring the Miami offense to the modern NFL era.

Say Something Smart @ 07:45 PM,

Right you are about Elam and Jones!

Elam and R. Jones would give us a very feared set of Safeties akin to Gholdson/Whittner in SF.

I would sure love to see those two both patrolling the secondary...hunting.

It would be just like the old Batman cartoons...**BAM!**...**BOFFO!**...**POW!**..**SOCKO!**

I have a feeling Woodson is smokescreen as he is so old. To me, he just doesn't seem to fit the direction the team is going.

Depending on letting Jake Long go or not they may be forced to take OT Lane Johnson or target Fluker a little later.

Cheers,

Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 07, 2013 at 09:59 PM

Your either reading randomly through posts or taking part of what one writes to suit an opinion.

I clearly posted that I saw Ricky Proehl (not just in skin tone) when analyzing Hartline ( a very good situational player in multiple sets).

I believe he can be an asset but wonder at 6 Mil. given at the current rate you'll need 100 Mil. in the next decade heaped on today's CAP to resign your own.

Point:

I see a player who could contribute and did nothing during the 2012 Season to make me view him as an answer to the problem instead a a contribution in the solution.

I do have apprehensions at the value the current FA market places on him given just a couple of Yrs. ago a 5 Yr./40 Mil. deal was a BIG contract to give a WR now we want to pony up a 6 Mil per average on a middle of the pack player who will mainly run underneath routes.

I don't see the Fiscal responsibility in that contract for a supporting player in the CAPPED ERA. Who in their right mind set this market?? It's insanity and the CAP would have to grow at a yearly rate of 10 to 15% to keep up or these contracts will impload the NFL by 2015 when the market will be flooded by FA's looking for Cents on the Dollar but that's Goodell's problem not mine I simply think the player and asset not the problem while you argue he is.

Were going in circles because I don't disagree with you your just arguing based on a totally different perspective. This whole business of giving upwards of 15 to 18% of your payroll capital to one supposed "ELITE" player will come back to bite everyone sooner than later but not my call and definitely not my money which would be earning interest somewhere else.

FINLIFE,YOU KNOW YG4L CHANGES HIS MIND(FLIP-FLOPS), CHECK BACK IN A HOUR HE'LL CHANGE HIS OPIONION.
HE HAS NO SOUL OR HONOR.
TO BE

OR

NOT TO BE.

Hartline would also benefit from playing with a quality QB.

If Hartline gets reeled in and Ireland does as predicted and gets a few WR's on the team of quality (i.e. Wallace and a draft pick or two)

Also, now that Tenn and TE Jared Cook are at odds maybe there is the seam threatening TE we need and they forego the draft as a TE fix.

These new offensive playmakers would/should allow Hartline to put up more TDs EVEN if his receptions go down. I believe if the WR corps is say Wallace, Hartline, Bess, Wheaton, and Patton with FA TE Jared Cook threatening in all sorts of formations, then my prediction is Hartline gets 6 TD's or more.

Cheers,

Aloco...SUP MAN!!!

Ireland has to (read MUST) come through this draft or we should stick him in the Oprah Winfrey Ape City Jail right?

Chhers,

My San Fran fan buddy calls Ted Ginn Jr........Teddy Ballgame!! I have no idea why.

Rob in OC | March 07, 2013 at 10:45 PM

When I read the news on J.Cook the mind started turning for sure but wonder what he seeks if looking to get CAPPED at WR scale based on HYBRID role??

It could be he's looking for more guaranteed cash but if looking to break bank at T.E. then not feasible when taking into account the 11 plus Mil. that Wallace would command.

I'm not even that high on giving Hartline 6 Mil per but if it's tagged with Wallace and draft pick would make for a better group before ever even taking the field than the 2012 product.

What do you guys think of Brandon Gibson coming to Miami?

Darkoak, I'd rather have Brandon Marshall. What a mess since he left.

Well the Beast is gone for good. No point belly-aching about it.

...On the subject of Elam..He is definitley one of the top saftey prospects in this draft..Would it be a big shock if he skyrocketed into the 12 spot? We are looking only at mocks. These are usualy accurate for how many picks in sequence out of the top 5?

Also..Every year there is a player, or players that get drafted higher then mockaholics think is proper. Remember. It is the teams evaluation. If we think saftey is a position that we need to explore, and say Elam is the top rated guy. Who is to say it is a "reach" because the publications say so?

There is still a lot of time before draft day. Who knows. Now, it is very hard to say what the draft will look like. Fa is going to play a role in shaping the possibilities. But in this draft, that on the outside seems so wide open..Who are we to say where a top rated player should go if a team decides he has value come the time we are on the clock?
