Dolphins open some draft possibilities, close others

Practically every day, someone who follows me on my twitter feed asks me what the Dolphins are going to do in the first round of the draft even though the draft is one month away.

Last week, I said the Dolphins were heavily interested in Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

I jumped the gun.

Rhodes is a fine player. He looks the part at 6-1. He plays with some nastiness. And the Dolphins do indeed like him. But that has to be measured in degrees and I was told recently that he probably isn't the guy in the first round because he's not a 100 percent system fit for the Dolphins.

Me: :-(

Rhodes needs to be in a system where he's getting his hands on a receiver. He might be able to learn the discipline of combo coverages that inlcude a lot of zone work and playing quarters. But that's not his game. He's more a press corner, folks.

So there's that.

I also said early on in the process that I would scream if the Dolphins used their first overall pick on an offensive or defensive lineman. Since general manager Jeff Ireland arrived with Bill Parcells, the Dolphins have tried to upgrade those two units in the first round three out of five drafts -- with Jake Long, Mike Pouncey and Jared Odrick as first-round picks.

Well, guess what?

The Dolphins are open to upgrading those two spots in the draft again -- perhaps even in the first round. Ireland wants to sorely keep the defensive line, a team strength, very strong. Two days ago, I reported to you the club has parted ways with Tony McDaniel. Well, the Dolphins want to add a defensive tackle. And, as you know, a pass-rusher is something the Dolphins continue to consider in free agency and will consider in the draft.

And this is supposedly a great year for defensive ends. So that is a serious possibility.

The Dolphins also will look at offensive line, particularly offensive tackle. Indeed, even if the team signs Eric Winston to play right tackle, I don't believe the club sees him as a long-term solution. Even if the left tackle job is handed to Jonathan Martin, the Dolphins want a fallback.

Well, drafting a left tackle and moving Martin back to right tackle is a possibility.

I've mentioned Oklahoma's Lane Johnson on twitter as a possible first-round selection. The Dolphins like him. They don't love him. Yes, they agree he's a first-round talent but what I'm hearing is not at No. 12 in Miami's eyes.

So where does that leave the Dolphins in the first round? Well, that's the point. The Dolphins have worked this offseason with the idea of filling in as many gaps on the team as possible. No the cornerback spot is not filled, but I believe the club will get serious in the next day or so about trying to sign Brent Grimes or some cornerback option so that cornerback is no longer a glowing, ominous and obvious need.

Basically, the Dolphins want to go to the draft with a wide field of possibilities. They want to draft the best available player (BAP) and not draft necessarily for need. The club drafted for need in 2009 when Vontae Davis and Sean Smith were added in the first two rounds. Neither are on the team four years later.

Lesson learned, I think."

"I don’t know that we’re complete at any position," coach Joe Philbin said this week. "I think hopefully what’s happened with some of the free agency moves is it gives Jeff more latitude to just go find good football players.

"We’re as interested in adding, again that term, it’s a vague term, but good football players to the roster at a variety of positions. I don’t know that we’re locked and loaded anywhere. That’s not a bad thing. I don’t know that many of the other 15 [coaches] that are in the room today are locked and loaded at a ton of spots. We’ve got to add good players at every position."

Yes, I'd say every position except quarterback, linebacker, punter and kicker is a first-round option for the Dolphins.

The offensive line is an option, as I've explained. Defensive line is an option. Cornerback, but not Rhodes, is an option. Safety is an option. Running back, following the loss of Reggie Bush is an outside and long-odds options I suppose. Receiver pops back into the picture as an option. And tight end is an option -- although I do not see a tight end in the draft worthy of the No. 12 overall selection.

The Dolphins have opened the field for themselves. Smart.

Ross is too cheap to fix his own stadium or to hire a real GM. Not paying Reggie or Jake was retarded with all that cap room. He'll never build a winner being so friggin cheap.

BAP is a denomination; BPA is the abbreviation for Best Player Available......they must say it on TV every draft day about 10,000 times!!! YIKES!!!!

"WNP, trading up is no longer the big negative it used to be, especially with the rookie salary cap. If there is someone the Fins absolutely love in this draft they have the picks to do it. It wouldn't surprise me if they trade up. Something no one expects, just like FA"

Bobby,

Agreed but it depends on the player we get & how much we have to give up. Obviously if the player becomes a freaking stud it was a great decision...LOL.

MLB-Manti Teo should be the pick. Why? First, I am a Hurricanes fan and saw him knock Duke Johnson down many times one on one, and we all know how fast the Duke is. How did he do it, by instincts and knowing where to be on the field. He was the Captain and emotional leader of Notre Dame. 4 year starter. 2009-63 tackles. 2010-133 tackles, 2011-128 tackles, 2012-113 tackles. He was known as a run stuffers, and then worked on his pass protection and had 7 interceptions his senior year.
Also, it has been widely reported that John Harbaugh is not impressed with him....BS!!!
He is the coach of the Ravens as you all know. He just lost Ray Lewis to retirement. He needs a MLB, and is praying that all the NFL teams are stupid enough to let him fall to his team. Beyond on the fake girlfriend and the bad game he had against Alabama he was a top ten pick, and with our new 4-3 defense, we need a leader there at that position.

Remember these names. John Offerdahl, Nick Buoniconti, and my favorite Zack Thomas.

Harmel, you WON blog douche of the day award, congrats!!

Phins78, totally agreed.

Assuming that is the new logo, I like the 'tweaked' version quite a bit. Have seen a similar one photoshopped onto a helmet and it definitely has a more aerodynamic look and feel to it than the current logo.

Besides, the current one is a damn CATOON CHARACTER. An anthropomorphic porpoise wearing a helmet that is better suited for a stuffed childrens toy. This is a huge improvement.

The best part? The 1997-2012 logo will probably NEVER be seen again. When they do 'throwbacks' now it will be in the original unis with the soon to be ditched current ones just a bad memory.

we need playmakers. to go from 12 to say 4 or 5 to get dee milliner will cost more that a 1/2/3 probably two 1's and then some.

Biggest draft needs in order are:

1) LT
2) RB
3) QB
4) TE

Harmel, you WON blog douche of the day award, congrats!!

Harmel Wins!,

Too early to make that call. No doubt that 2 Watt aka Twatt & YG (& his aliases) will give him a run for his money at some point.

No way the Dolphins pick a QB at 12, it's a fantasy to think they will. I know people aren't sold on Tannyhill but a QB pick in the first round is not going to happen this year.

Mark in TO gets it 100% Jarvis Jones

Trade a #2, #3 and Bess to the Raiders for the #4 pick and draft Millner. That's the only way they;ll get him

I guess odin has the 'Lifetime Douche' award nailed down.

sorry, new logo is worse than the current one. i also saw it on a helmet and it looks tiny and very gay. lose the sun and make it bigger and meaner. i liked the one with it holding a ball and mean face. i like keeping the orientation. that new one looks like it's out for a leisurely swim to a club called the man hole, or blow hole in this case!!

I hate this time of year and the endless posts about who everyone wants to be the first pick. But I do come in and read, yes I am aware of the hypocrisy. I'm always hoping for something interesting to come along. In saying that I ask this of all our resident draft experts.

When posting your pick for who you want in the draft could you also write a quick sentence as to how that player fits well into the system we have in place?

After reading the posts one is left to wonder if that part of it is ever taken into consideration. Do some of you just pick players because you like them but never take into account the fit? Also do you do background checks on their character make up?

I'm asking as a curiousity, I don't follow a lot of college football. Stanfords the team I watch and is why I believe in Ertz as a second round pick and I've outlined why in past posts.

Memo to Front Office-
Fins need PLAYMAKERS. Guys that are game changers.
Yeah, we need a lot- OL, CB, TE, DE

But playmakers change the outcomes of games.
I'm not comfortable with an unknown quantity for lead back in Miller.
Thomas sucks.

Draft Lacey and watch him run!

Both superbowl teams had power running games.
The national championship college team had power running.
We have Daniel thomas.
GET LACEY. Today's teams are built to stop speed and passing, not the bullrushing kind of power he brings.

we need playmakers. to go from 12 to say 4 or 5 to get dee milliner will cost more that a 1/2/3 probably two 1's and then some.

Jaison,

I like Milliner. I really do & I thinks he's a solid CB BUT he's not a game changer like Patrick Peterson. Just b/c the fans feel 'desperate' for a CB, I don't think he's worth that many picks.

When ATL traded up for Julio Jones they weren't doing that b/c they thought he was Jones was a solid WR--they did that b/c they thought he was a special talent & a potential game breaker. They rolled the dice & so far the decision was a very good one. As far as prospects go--Milliner is no Julio Jones.

And the benefit of bringing T'eo to Miami is Erik Spoelstra will have a date every Saturday night ...

Re: the new logo ...

The Dolphins are my wife to be's fave team not only out of loyalty to me but she thinks the logo is "SOOOO CUTE" take that for what it's worth when discussing the new logo....

Sorry, Raiders have #3 pick

Te'o At #12?

Yes And No.

Yes, He Still The Best LB Out There. And Having Him Outside For A Couple Of Seasons, and Then Moving Him Inside Makes Sense. Specially If He Can Bring His 7 INT's As A LB!! Heck, I Would Settle For 2 INT's From My LB's!! Zack Always Had A Couple Int's A Season!! While He Was To Busy Leading With His Head. Have You Seen Zach Lately? How The Mighty Have Fallen.

No!!, Because Before I Pick Te'o I Would Have To Pick The Best Offensive Weapon In The Draft!! The Reason We All Doubt Te'o!!

E.Lacy Is The Reason!! They Made The Helmet Rule Legal!!

E.Lacy Is The Reason T.Richardson Left For The Draft Early!!

i like lacey too, but he may very well still be there in round two.

i like the hurt RB, what his name, something like lattimer?, he could be gotten latter than his actual worth due to injury. i also like tyrann m at corner. lots of red flags will drive him into the 3rd though he may be the best CB in the draft. load his contract with behavior clauses and he'll pretty much have to do it. assign him a full time off field mentor/companion.

This drafting a player too high because of position is some BS. If the guy is a future pro bowler you draft him at 12 regarless of position.

When people say the new logo looks "gay" do they mean it looks highly educated, financially successful, and physically fit?

GET LACEY. Today's teams are built to stop speed and passing, not the bullrushing kind of power he brings.

Charley Casserly brought out a very interesting point about Lacey which is that his O-line is so good he never has to make a guy miss in the backfield or change direction until he hits the hole. This makes it impossible to know what will happen when he gets to the NFL & this is exactly why people thought Ingram & Richardson were so great. Now I'm not so sure about any of them b/c maybe they're just a product of that system. I have no idea....

based on athleticism, i wouldn't even take Milliner with the12th pick. Nothing about him screams special.

LOL @ 11:41. Gotta admit you're right!

"This drafting a player too high because of position is some BS. If the guy is a future pro bowler you draft him at 12 regarless of position."

Agreed. See Mike & Markice Pouncey.

LOL!!!

ROTFLMAO!!

Good One!!

They Can Go To Church Together..

Philbin Will Have His Choirboy. Now All We Need Is Tim Tebow And We Will Have A Holy Trinity.

@ 11:41, possibly also well dressed?

When people say the new logo looks "gay" do they mean it looks highly educated, financially successful, and physically fit?

Posted by: well? it's true. | March 21, 2013 at 11:41 AM

no i mean it looks like it should be a sun catcher hanging next to a rainbow and unicorn sun catcher. how does that thing look educated and successful??

based on athleticism, i wouldn't even take Milliner with the12th pick. Nothing about him screams special.

Mark,

Good, solid player but not elite. The 'Honey Badger' was MUCH more of a playmaker in the secondary before he found the chronic.

Oh yeah, well dressed too, lol!

"Basically, the Dolphins want to go to the draft with a wide field of possibilities"

The reason for this is not just to draft the best player available. From a strategic standpoint, it keeps everyone else guessing about who you might be drafting. That invites another team to possibly trade up with the Dolphins and ultimately acquire more picks, especially if (as you suggest in the blog) the Dolphins aren't "in love" with a specific player.

Dashi, you keep coming back to Lacey but to me the RB to watch out for is Christine Michael of A&M. Guy just killed it in the post season workouts ... easily the most gifted RB in this draft. Two problems with this guy though. Likes to sleep a lot and not a lot of yards last year ... but a lot of TDS though ...

Our OG's have two things in common - 1) they don't fit the ZBS; and 2) they are in the last year of their contracts. Give me Jonathan Cooper at #12 and a 7th rounder to earn and compete (Omoregie Uzzi or Earl Watford).

also to whomever posted earlier, the new fin logo doesn't have a mean eye. it has no eye!! so how does a blind dolphin represent a football team or be anything well? it's true has stated??

Sending Ireland to do the Dolphin draft is like sending my 12 yr old out to block Cam Wake. You just close your eyes and hope he doesnt get killed LOL

OK....I think MOST Fin fans agree that the CURRENT priorities are (not in order):

CB 2
T 1 or 2
TE 1
G 1
DE 1
DT 1
S 1
RB 1

With 10 needs the team still has the ability to fill 2 or 3 in free agency (most likely 2). If they go into the draft with 8 needs they have 8 picks in top 5 rounds. I really think they will be able to pick best available and fill most needs without having to trade around.

Ouu, Honey Badger, I wouldn't even sign that guy as an street free agent... there's nothing to this guy other than straight line speed ... nothing ...

agreed on Milliner though

I think Lacey(Lacy?) is the reason Alabama's o-line is rated so high, not vice-versa.
He is Gore on steroids(I hope not). I would love to see these tall thin D-backs try to tackle this guy. Or these thin, fast linebackers built to cover tight ends.

Difference Between E.Lacy And T.Richardson Or M.Ingram?

5'11" 230+lbs

He Is Ricky Williams 2.0!!

Plus He Can Catch!! That Is An Underrated Part Of His Game.

E.Lacy Can Come In And Gain 1000yds And 10TD's His Rookie Year!!

D.Thomas Was A Bad Pick. And I Think Even Ireland Knows That.

E.Lacy Doesn't Have A Lot Of Negative Plays. You Rarely See Him Get Knocked Back.

Zac Stacy can show truly-amazing numbers against SEC rivals, and he didn't have Alabama's OL at his disposal. He is also a true leader both inside and outside the field. I'm just not sold on Eddie Lacy, not at first round anyway.

if the lsu db is in shape, then he's ready.
talent = much less practice.

4 Wr's, And E.Lacy In the Backfield. You Can Still Run The Ball.

E.Winston And B.Moore On The Right Side, For Jake Long Money. Good Solid O-Line.

Oh, And E.Lacy Can Pass Protect.

If Chance Warmack is available at #12, Chicago will want to move from #20 to #12 and grab him to help Cutler's Morale (Seriously). The question is does Miami have a plan/interest to make such a move.

Does Ireland want Tyler Eifert, or Keenan Allen PLUS a 2nd round pick?????? I think it depends on if we get Eric Winston and are comfortable with Martin at LT for at least of year. Then the 1st Round does not have to be used on OT at all. Therefore we can get CB, Safety and DE, ALL IN 2nd round!!!!

The "plug and play for 10 years" idea needs to go out the window for every position besides quarterback, which should unequivocally be any teams greatest investment. Go back to 2002, 2003, 2004 and check out the first two rounds to see who's actually still on the same team that drafted them. With free agency and injuries, you need guys that can contriubute now and squeeze every bit of talent you can out of them before that 4 or 5-year rookie contract window closes.

You make it sound like Vontae and Smith weren't solid picks. They practically started every game and played pretty well (esp. Vontae). We chose to trade Vontae and not restructure Smith prior to this year. That isn't a bad reflection of our drafting like the 20+ other players I could name in past 5 years

We need a MLB.

Still, given his instincts and exceptional ability to drop back into coverage, the chances of Te'o succeeding in the NFL should not be dismissed based on one 40-time.

As Clayton notes, St. Louis Rams LB James Laurinaitis ran the same time in his combine effort, and now plays every down in the heart of the Rams' defense. A 5.00-second time posted by current New England Patriots LB Brandon Spikes dropped him to No. 62 overall (h/t Tampa Bay Times), but hasn't stopped him from thriving at the next level.

also to whomever posted earlier, the new fin logo doesn't have a mean eye. it has no eye!! so how does a blind dolphin represent a football team or be anything well? it's true has stated??

-------------------------------------------------------

You're not up to speed. The logo you're thinking of was tweaked pretty signicantly and DOES have eyes--along with a more bold color scheme.

You might want to actually see it before judging it, y'know?

Naples Dave - "MLB-Manti Teo should be the pick. Why? First, I am a Hurricanes fan and saw him knock Duke Johnson down many times one on one, and we all know how fast the Duke is."

I'd bet Duke would tell you that Arthur Brown (KSU) laid the hurt on the Canes more than Te'o did. Once Brown left Miami he became an All-American. But Brown may be too small to invest in early.

armando,where's the duper blog.?
lol

google duper jax po po.
lol

Who's the idiot that said TE is NOT important in This Offense (DASHI) have yu EVER paid attention to Green Bay's offense or ANY WC Offense for that matter. They usually have the best TE s in the league, if yu look back iver the yrs... Miami has (a hole filler) in Keller. They need a Stud TE to make (Philbin's) offense work properly...
Eifert would be (given which players will most likely be gone by time miami picks) The BPA for Them as a Team...

Does Philbin think Lacy looks like a football player?
That is the question. Is there some snap in his body?
Does he kind of just move like a football player?
We will find out draft day!

J.Cooper Seems Like A Good Fit Also. But #12 Is A Bit High For A OG. I Like Cooper Over Womack. I Believe Womack Is Not That Good.

Dashi's Draft RB Fits For Miami

1. E.Lacy
2. G.Bernard
3. M.Lattimore
4. M.James

Any Of These 4 Is Better Than D.Thomas And Compliments L.Miller.

I think who ever Miami chooses in the first round will depend on what other free agent moves they make. I think the best player that fits there system that will be available is OG - Johnathan Cooper, Because I think Ziggy Ansah, Dee Milliner & all 3 great OT's will be gone by #12. That is why I want Miami to sign FA OT - Eric Winston so bad. At least that way we will have a great OL (Assuming Johnathan Martin gets stronger & better in year 2).

TAVON AUSTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason, the other poster is right. You're thinking of the logo that was leaked last December. That one is NOT the final version and the altered one does, indeed, have eyes. It looks more streamilined to me, also.
