Dolphins open some draft possibilities, close others

Practically every day, someone who follows me on my twitter feed asks me what the Dolphins are going to do in the first round of the draft even though the draft is one month away.

Last week, I said the Dolphins were heavily interested in Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

I jumped the gun.

Rhodes is a fine player. He looks the part at 6-1. He plays with some nastiness. And the Dolphins do indeed like him. But that has to be measured in degrees and I was told recently that he probably isn't the guy in the first round because he's not a 100 percent system fit for the Dolphins.

Me: :-(

Rhodes needs to be in a system where he's getting his hands on a receiver. He might be able to learn the discipline of combo coverages that inlcude a lot of zone work and playing quarters. But that's not his game. He's more a press corner, folks.

So there's that.

I also said early on in the process that I would scream if the Dolphins used their first overall pick on an offensive or defensive lineman. Since general manager Jeff Ireland arrived with Bill Parcells, the Dolphins have tried to upgrade those two units in the first round three out of five drafts -- with Jake Long, Mike Pouncey and Jared Odrick as first-round picks.

Well, guess what?

The Dolphins are open to upgrading those two spots in the draft again -- perhaps even in the first round. Ireland wants to sorely keep the defensive line, a team strength, very strong. Two days ago, I reported to you the club has parted ways with Tony McDaniel. Well, the Dolphins want to add a defensive tackle. And, as you know, a pass-rusher is something the Dolphins continue to consider in free agency and will consider in the draft.

And this is supposedly a great year for defensive ends. So that is a serious possibility.

The Dolphins also will look at offensive line, particularly offensive tackle. Indeed, even if the team signs Eric Winston to play right tackle, I don't believe the club sees him as a long-term solution. Even if the left tackle job is handed to Jonathan Martin, the Dolphins want a fallback.

Well, drafting a left tackle and moving Martin back to right tackle is a possibility.

I've mentioned Oklahoma's Lane Johnson on twitter as a possible first-round selection. The Dolphins like him. They don't love him. Yes, they agree he's a first-round talent but what I'm hearing is not at No. 12 in Miami's eyes.

So where does that leave the Dolphins in the first round? Well, that's the point. The Dolphins have worked this offseason with the idea of filling in as many gaps on the team as possible. No the cornerback spot is not filled, but I believe the club will get serious in the next day or so about trying to sign Brent Grimes or some cornerback option so that cornerback is no longer a glowing, ominous and obvious need.

Basically, the Dolphins want to go to the draft with a wide field of possibilities. They want to draft the best available player (BAP) and not draft necessarily for need. The club drafted for need in 2009 when Vontae Davis and Sean Smith were added in the first two rounds. Neither are on the team four years later.

Lesson learned, I think."

"I don’t know that we’re complete at any position," coach Joe Philbin said this week. "I think hopefully what’s happened with some of the free agency moves is it gives Jeff more latitude to just go find good football players.

"We’re as interested in adding, again that term, it’s a vague term, but good football players to the roster at a variety of positions. I don’t know that we’re locked and loaded anywhere. That’s not a bad thing. I don’t know that many of the other 15 [coaches] that are in the room today are locked and loaded at a ton of spots. We’ve got to add good players at every position."

Yes, I'd say every position except quarterback, linebacker, punter and kicker is a first-round option for the Dolphins.

The offensive line is an option, as I've explained. Defensive line is an option. Cornerback, but not Rhodes, is an option. Safety is an option. Running back, following the loss of Reggie Bush is an outside and long-odds options I suppose. Receiver pops back into the picture as an option. And tight end is an option -- although I do not see a tight end in the draft worthy of the No. 12 overall selection.

The Dolphins have opened the field for themselves. Smart.

I found it T.J. and thanks for pointing it out (others as well). I guess I was right the first time.

Yeah I love the red eyed Dolphin. Now I want to see what the new logo will look like on a helmet. I'm wondering how big they will make it.

Ahhhhh crap. Jaison is getting in my head now and I'm worried about the look on the helmet! hahaha who cares why am I obsessing?!

Rhodes can play zone defense. google Walter Camp, then select cb. See for yourself.

Love the Ellerbe logo ...

No worries, I obssess over the same crap!

As far as how it would look on the helmet, there IS a good render of just that out there (albeit with the plainer, earlier 'eyeless' version).

Just one guy's opinion but it gave the helmet a more 'forward motion' look instead of the current static logo that seems kind of 'trapped' in the sunburst.

See You're not alone in thinking about this stuff, lol.

Right Mark? Now I'm mad it got leaked because I like it better than the one on the sleeve! Damnit. I would have been fine with the sleeve logo and now they put this possesed demon dolphin in my head. Got to have it!

lol

The one on the shirt sleeve looks like the Dolphin is taking it easy ... too mellow

That's pretty funny T.J., my brother in law is in advertising so I look at these things from a different view point now after years of unwanted training. Ha.

The logo screams moving forward, forward thinking. It embodies winning and not defeat based on the position of the head and tail. The goofy eyes and cartoon helmet are gone which helps represent a more modern design.

My Reality: Boring life, boring job, boring wife and kids in the suburbs. I drive a damn Prius.

The Dream: I am a beautiful Nubian princess, surrounded by devoted sycophants who fan me with palm fronds, feed me dates and wine, and attend to my every erotic need with a simple clap of my hands.

((sigh))

Weird.

Joe Philbin said that the new logo hasnt been leaked. I'll take his word for it. That way, unlike yo guys, I wont have egg on my face once "THE REAL" logo is released.

Rither way, praise Jesus that none of those fan-submitted logos from both the Herald and SS 'contests' will ever see the light of day.

Good Lord. EXCRUCIATINGLY awful stuff. There's a few 'happy, playful' dolphins that will make you barf in your mouth a little.

Worth checking out just for the morbid humor of it.

My issue with the uni's is I'm not in love with the color scheme. However, IF they refuse to change it, then they need to go to orange as alternate jerseys (and leave the teal as simply a flourish). There's too much teal in today's Dolphins uni's. Teal isn't a menacing color. But orange, now your evoking blood, or the heat of the Sun, that's power, that's strength. More orange, less teal (it's not manly to even say the word teal. Say it to yourself. Do you feel manly? It's like my weatherman, you says the word, "sprinkles." As in, "no heavy rain for today, maybe a few sprinkles here and there..." That's NOT manly.).

Phins78,

This same logo was in the Herald contest. I hated all of them. The problem with having a fish as a logo is there isnt much change you can do to it without embarking on the ridiculous.

I wouldnt be opposed to removing the fish altogther. Keep the name, but, remove the fish. Then we could be a little more creative with the logo design without embarking upon the ridiculous.

"WE'RE NOT LOCKED AND LOADED AT ANY POSITION YET!" TRADE DOWN AND ADD ANOTHER DRAFT PICK IN THE SECOND ROUND. OUR 2013THE FOOTBALL PRACTICES NEED TO BE VERY COMPETITIVE AND INTENSE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. EVERY PLAYER FIGHTING FOR A SPOT ON THE TEAM NEEDS TO PRACTICE AND COMPETE HARD LIKE ANY DAY COULD BE THEIR LAST DAY. THAT'S THE IDEA OF DEFEATING EGOCENTRIC PLAYERS ON THE ROSTERS.

It's not really teal, though. It's aqua. There's a difference (and on the surface it *appears* they are darkening the shade a bit).

No right or wrong here, of course. It's a matter of personal taste. Like arguing the weather.

Me? I've never been a huge fan of the orange unis. Just a tad 'trendy' to me. And I have a really, REALLY hard time imagining Larry Csonka ever wearing that, lol.

But to each his own.

@ 1:18, very clever shot at me ... using the name Ted Rogers ... billionaire owner of all three of the Toronto sports franchises ... very clever pun ...

got most of it right except I'm not married (yet), no kids ... and I like my cars so no Prius ... Lexus and a BMW tho ...

DC,

Have to be very, very careful with hanging the color scheme. There's a thin line to be crossed between looking like an nfl team and ad also-ran football leagues.

All that I would do is is try and find a way to incorporate "dolphin grey" without making the uni's look to cheesy. Maybe pinstripe dolphin grey into some of the border areas. Not a change in color scheme, but, a tweak to it.

DC, that is a good point. I've always been more partial to the orange merchandise .. even tried to get the wife to pick orange for the bridesmaids dresses for the wedding (lost that one) ... I think you're on to something

tj, is Larry Csonka EVER going to wear a uniform again? I'm sick and tired of fans harking back to the 70's. Let's bring back the leather helmets why don't we?

It's 40 years on, and we STILL haven't won a SB. Think it's time to KILL THE TRADITION? I do. There's no TRADITION worthy of keeping. Sure, we have the history, let's leave it to the history books. That's "perfect Season" line is getting real old (just like the coaches/players who keep singing it every year). What good is that to today's fan?

However, I agree, mostly. if I were in charge, I'd use black and the dark blue in the uni's as my colors. Get it, black and blue, bruising the opponent. But I understand that wouldn't go down well in the heat of Miami, so I get the bright colors.

But teal (or aqua which I was rightly corrected on) is not a good look. I'm sticking with that. I'd even prefer white on white.

This topic got me thinking about the history of the franchise and old stuff like that.

Most of you guys probably know the team name came from a contest the Herald ran back in 1965, with 'Dolphins' winning easily.

But do you know some of the runner-up names? The leading vote-getters were 'Moons,' 'Missiles,' 'Marauders,' 'Mustangs,' and 'Sharks.'

Well, Sharks obviously would have been pretty cool, Marauders and Mustangs, too (although not too sure many associate wild horses with South Florida, lol)

But 'Moons??' Well, I guess the team would have had the option of either using a lunar-inspired logo or a silhouette of a human butt!

Anyway--gotta run but enjoyed the conversation!

YG why would anyone have egg on their face? We're just talking about which leaked logos we like and dislike. I don't think anyone said they KNOW one of them is the definite logo. Can't get egg on your face because no one is making a prediction.

Example 1; I like the fan version of the logo with the red eyed Dolphin. I understand it is not the logo and never said it was. Just said I like it. How would one call me on that after the new logo comes out? 'Hahahaha you liked a different version'?

Example 2; Someone says' "Daniel Thomas will be a 1500 yard rusher next season." THIS GUY will be the one with egg on his face, not the guy stating an opinion about a logo.

But I agree with your take on fixing up a Dolphin (not a fish) being all but impossible. It would be kind of cool to see the name Dolphins on the helmet but it will never happen. People want that Dolphin there. Just look at the outrage over the change by some, can you imagine if they took it away all together?

While we're going dominant orange, let's just change the team name too. Instead of the Dolphins we can become the Miami Orange Groves. Or Miami Mangos.

I'ld rather be a Miami Avocado fan. LOL...

Aqua and orange. No teal. Dolphins are gray and live in the ocean so the new colors should be grey and dark blue .The helmet should be grey with only a set of eyes on the helmet facing the opposition fixed in a im gonna eat yer children glare or the stank eye from The new guy.

Geez DC--no need to be so angry, dude! It was just an observation on my part.

Anyway..gotta run.

Agreed, good post.

DC we're on the same page regarding the notion of tradition. I wrote a very similar post on page 2 I believe.

db, it ain't a fish k?
lol

tj, not getting angry at you. I just know what goes wrong when people mess with things they shouldn't, and don't mess with things they should. I'm in DC, and was perfectly comfortable supporting the Washington Bullets. But the Wizards, PUHLEASE!!!

But I like Sammo and YGs ideas. I'm partial to grey. Grey, dark blue, flourish the orange and aqua. Now we're embarking on a manly color scheme.

Not sure Mark feels this, but there's a definite push to feminize the American male. You see it everywhere you go. I don't want my pants so tight they crush my nuts. I don't want to go see a chick flick. Doesn't mean I'm not kind. Doesn't mean I'm a chauvinist. You wanna work (wife), GO TO WORK!!! You wanna go out after work for a drink with your friends or co-workers, GO RIGHT AHEAD! You want to come home and grab the remote and put on The Food Network....BYATCH, for 1, don't EVER touch the remote when I'm present, and 2, it's MARCH MADNESS, you better go upstairs with that bullshyt.

Does that make me the bad guy? NO, it makes me what I am, 100%, grade A, M-A-L-E! Check the chromosomes.

Armando please don't do a story about Duper.

dc, what 'bout jet green since u hate aqua?
lol

Guys I would be all for darker colors if the Dolphins didn't have to play on the face of the sun. F&^k it's hot down there and I could not wait to finish school and get back up North where I could breathe! To each his own. But seriously, the players might have something to say about playing in 100 degree heat and high humidity wearing clothes that soak in the heat.

2watt,

They are called mammals because their of the underwater sea cow family. They dont lay eggs like other fish, but techinally they are still just big ass underwater fish.

Mammal is just a term reserved for species that bare their young from the womb.

Soak in the sun

DC,

I for damn sure agree with you on the Washington Bullets to Wizards travesty. Bullet represents speed and power, not neccessarily death.

Its a shame we live in such an overly sensitive wussified society. Everything is over legislated out of irrational fear.

78, dey always wear white @ home in hot day games, always, aqua at nite wit dat ugly axx orange puke.
lol

Mando,
BPA at 12th is Tavon Austin. If as you said they have "learned their lesson" and will draft BPA over need then Austin is clearly the man.

No other player available then would have the type of impact Austin will. Philbin told you they are looking for explosiveness and I can not think of any other player that fits that better than TA.

Now I heard a rumor they are shopping Bess, if true then I think they have to consider him. What do you know about the workout he was going to in Miami for the Phins?
I'm sure they have to be impressed.

DC, PREACH IT BROTHER, PREACH IT!

And yes, the man is being marginalized in Canada too. We dropped behind dogs in the pecking order.

Now goes ...

Women
Dogs
Men
Cats

As far as getting a fair shake goes .... barely holding on to that spot above cats too ...

I always joked I would go retire in central America where a man who provides is considered a God .... maybe I'm not really joking ...

tiger, it's bap, not bpa or armando wont answer u.
lol

DC,

Also, name changing the Bullets to Wizards, no more changed hand gun violence in DC. Than changing the name to Wizards makes its a magical city(D of C)).

Fish can survive without oxygen.
Like humans Dolphins need oxygen.

Females are called "cows"

The old greek word for dolphin is translated as sea swine.

Dolphins have nothing to do with sea cows. They are in the whale family.

What about the fact that they breathe in air????

they fart 2.
lol

Posted by: 2 watt | March 21, 2013 at 02:05 PM

You dont have to spell it axx anymore. For some reason we can now use ass. LOL...

i kno db, this way u kno it b me.
lol
axx

Let's get the kid vaccarro!!! Or wormack:))))))

Mark in Toronto, bad post on my part about Revis trade. Thr radio DJs around here thought it would be funny to give us Dolphin fans a hard time. The Albert trade doe seem to be something the Dolphins are trying to.get done though. Hopin if that happens they give no more than their late 2nd...
That would still allow them chance at a top ten guy, cuz one or two always slip come draft day, hopefully Werner, Warmack or Milliner, if not then I'm hopin they take Eifert...

BREAKING NEWS:

You fell asleep in biology class. Fish do require oxygen to live. They procees it from the water using their gills. Humans process it from the air using our lungs.

Water is 1 atom of hydrogen and 2 atoms of oxgen(h2o). Or 2/3 oxygen. LOL...

Another reason to pick MLB Manti Teo-watch Jon Gruden interview with him, and NFL scout Brooks. Brooks compared him to MLB demeco Ryans.

YG, don't even get me started. They're talking about changing it back. I hope they do. What reminds me of this logo change is the Owner back then had a contest, and rejected all the names that were chosen, and went out on his own and made the change. NO ONE wanted "Wizards." Damn rich people, think they know what's best. Heck, people went out and started shooting JUST BECAUSE OF THAT.

Posted by: Henryzphinz | March 21, 2013 at 02:13 PM

I dont see an Albert to Miami trade happening. Ask yourself, why give up at least the #12 pick and take on his franchise tag? Then you have to sign him longterm. Plus they may want the #12 and our Vontae Davis 2nd rd pick/

No way to any of these.

Mark, you're not joking. But I might join you in CA. The Caribbean is like that too. For now at least.

I never went to college, I live in the ocean . Thank you for the lesson. But I still need air and the fish do not.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | March 21, 2013 at 02:17 PM

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SELFISHLY I WOULD LOVE TO DRAFT AUSTIN AT #12 JUST TO KEEP NE FROM GETTING HIM. BUT REALISTICALLY I WOULD TRADE UP AND GET THE PASS RUSHER FROM BYU BUT ONLY IF WE DON'T SIGN A VETERAN FA PASS RUSHER(OSI). I'M NOT A FAN OF MILLNER HE'S A GOOD PLAYER BUT NOT FLUID ENOUGH AND IS CB WAITING TO GET BURNED DEEP! I LIKE WOMACK! EXCELLENT PICK BUT WHY SIGN BRANDON MOORE? TE FROM ND WOULD BE GREAT CHOICE BUT WE'VE ALREADY SIGNED KELLER! THIS BRINGS ME TO THE CHOICE I PREFER! THE DT(STAR) FROM UTAH! IF HE IS HEALTHY HE WILL IMMEDIATELY CHALLENGE BOTH STARKS AND SOLAI FOR PLAYING TIME AND WILL REPLACE ONE OF THE TWO NEXT YEAR! THERE IS NO WAY WE LOSE BOTH! NOW THE TEAM CAN GO IN ANY DIRECTION AND PICK BAP REST OF THE DRAFT! ONCE AGAIN IF JEFFY CAN DUPLICATE SUCCESS IN THE DRAFT LIKE HE'S DONE IN FA THIS FOOTBALL TEAM CAN REALLY BE SPECIAL AND THE FANS WILL RETURN! THIS WILL ALWAYS BE A DOLPHIN TOWN BUT THIS DOLPHIN TOWN DOES NOT ACCEPT LOSING AND NOT MAKING THE PLAYOFFS!!!

I realize because Im from the south and dont fully understand. But "The Winter X-Games" is a complete fking bore. LOL...

Just to clear this up:

Dolphins are called mammals because they ARE mammals, for crissakes!

They are not 'related' to whales, they ARE whales--just a small version with a different name. But 100% the same DNA.

Their closest 'relative?' That's actually the elephant--not freaking manatees!

Some of you guys should have learned this stuff by 5th grade. Jesus.

Also you did just as bad in school as a dolphin that never went. I'm not related to sea cows, I am a descendant of whales. I'm going to sign up for dolphin school to learn biology. You should sign up for human school and study cetology. Lets hang out sometime and do lines, I use my blowhole, and then maybe you can use your blowhole on me.

Congratulations at 2:25. How much more useless information do you have for us? The only place that information is relative is in this blog or on Jeopardy.
