Dolphins open some draft possibilities, close others

Practically every day, someone who follows me on my twitter feed asks me what the Dolphins are going to do in the first round of the draft even though the draft is one month away.

Last week, I said the Dolphins were heavily interested in Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

I jumped the gun.

Rhodes is a fine player. He looks the part at 6-1. He plays with some nastiness. And the Dolphins do indeed like him. But that has to be measured in degrees and I was told recently that he probably isn't the guy in the first round because he's not a 100 percent system fit for the Dolphins.

Me: :-(

Rhodes needs to be in a system where he's getting his hands on a receiver. He might be able to learn the discipline of combo coverages that inlcude a lot of zone work and playing quarters. But that's not his game. He's more a press corner, folks.

So there's that.

I also said early on in the process that I would scream if the Dolphins used their first overall pick on an offensive or defensive lineman. Since general manager Jeff Ireland arrived with Bill Parcells, the Dolphins have tried to upgrade those two units in the first round three out of five drafts -- with Jake Long, Mike Pouncey and Jared Odrick as first-round picks.

Well, guess what?

The Dolphins are open to upgrading those two spots in the draft again -- perhaps even in the first round. Ireland wants to sorely keep the defensive line, a team strength, very strong. Two days ago, I reported to you the club has parted ways with Tony McDaniel. Well, the Dolphins want to add a defensive tackle. And, as you know, a pass-rusher is something the Dolphins continue to consider in free agency and will consider in the draft.

And this is supposedly a great year for defensive ends. So that is a serious possibility.

The Dolphins also will look at offensive line, particularly offensive tackle. Indeed, even if the team signs Eric Winston to play right tackle, I don't believe the club sees him as a long-term solution. Even if the left tackle job is handed to Jonathan Martin, the Dolphins want a fallback.

Well, drafting a left tackle and moving Martin back to right tackle is a possibility.

I've mentioned Oklahoma's Lane Johnson on twitter as a possible first-round selection. The Dolphins like him. They don't love him. Yes, they agree he's a first-round talent but what I'm hearing is not at No. 12 in Miami's eyes.

So where does that leave the Dolphins in the first round? Well, that's the point. The Dolphins have worked this offseason with the idea of filling in as many gaps on the team as possible. No the cornerback spot is not filled, but I believe the club will get serious in the next day or so about trying to sign Brent Grimes or some cornerback option so that cornerback is no longer a glowing, ominous and obvious need.

Basically, the Dolphins want to go to the draft with a wide field of possibilities. They want to draft the best available player (BAP) and not draft necessarily for need. The club drafted for need in 2009 when Vontae Davis and Sean Smith were added in the first two rounds. Neither are on the team four years later.

Lesson learned, I think."

"I don’t know that we’re complete at any position," coach Joe Philbin said this week. "I think hopefully what’s happened with some of the free agency moves is it gives Jeff more latitude to just go find good football players.

"We’re as interested in adding, again that term, it’s a vague term, but good football players to the roster at a variety of positions. I don’t know that we’re locked and loaded anywhere. That’s not a bad thing. I don’t know that many of the other 15 [coaches] that are in the room today are locked and loaded at a ton of spots. We’ve got to add good players at every position."

Yes, I'd say every position except quarterback, linebacker, punter and kicker is a first-round option for the Dolphins.

The offensive line is an option, as I've explained. Defensive line is an option. Cornerback, but not Rhodes, is an option. Safety is an option. Running back, following the loss of Reggie Bush is an outside and long-odds options I suppose. Receiver pops back into the picture as an option. And tight end is an option -- although I do not see a tight end in the draft worthy of the No. 12 overall selection.

The Dolphins have opened the field for themselves. Smart.

My number one point that got deleted was that I was in here when the new rules regarding QBs came into play. I was also here later on when they decided to take hitting away from defenders. I was on a soap box for weeks. Some chastised me but most ignored it.

Forgive me with not sympathizing with those of you who are now seeing the light. Had our country not spent the last twenty years turning our men into walking v@#ina's maybe instead of just blindly following Goodell's agenda they could have thought for themselves and avoided this whole mess. We could have and should have complained along with every defender in the NFL that this was going to hurt the game. Enjoy your new NFL.

I don't care what our primary need is at this time. We need a game changer... TAVON AUSTIN is it folks!!! If we could land him along with what we already have... LOOK OUT!

Step one, admitting you have a problem.
1. My name is ALoco, I am a worthless troll
2. My name is Home, I am a worthless troll
Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

No need for attacks.

How about if we just laugh at the "Master(baiter)"?

Altogether now Gang:

ROTFLMAO! LMAO! LOL! Bhwaaaaa Haaaaa Haaaaa!!!!

The "Master(baiter)" is now **MY** puppet.

That makes **ME** the Puppet Master(baiter)!

I say: Jump Monkey Bu-oy! Jump through **MY** Hoop!

(Like Fish in a barrel)

YG you seem to have a handle on the words we can and can't use. I have a request. Could you post all of the "bad" words that are now acceptable? Do you know most of them? I would like to start using them on a regular basis.

I just spent ten minutes writing a post that was deleted 3 times because I used the clinical word for a female body part. Yet I have seen much worse in here on a daily basis. If you get a chance do a George Carlin list please (if you DO have a good idea what those words are) I know ass is now on the table.

V%$#nas is off the table. God forbid you use that word. Don't worry about attacking peoples religions, ethnicity, opinions, family including children and mother. Also don't worry about suggesting to another poster all of the things they can do with their mouth to another man as well as other places they can do stuff. ALL OF THAT IS FINE WITH THE MIAMI HERALD. Just don't say the word v$%^na's, that's so wrong.

Phins 78....

I am with you....about the wussyfication of America...and American men in General....

I already have less enthusiasm about the new season due to these wussy rules.

Even Don Shula agrees....I take some satisfaction in that....

I am not sure I am long for watching the NFL.....FINS or not.....

we will see how this season goes....I became a fan of football for the controlled violence....once the game is no longer violent....then it may no longer hold my interest....

ALoco I don't agree with you that I attack posters who don't agree with me. As a matter of fact go ahead and repost one single attack I have made on another poster who didn't agree with me.

I'm attacking you because you are fake and you are a moron. It's pretty obvious. It has nothing to do with you not agreeing with my opinion. Lots of people don't agree with my opinion and we have great debates. You are not one of those people. You deserve to be attacked, over and over and over and over again.

As a matter of fact I'm just going to call you out on all of your nonsense posts from now on. They are never opinions, just nonsense.

Calling a coach a corned beef coach? That's the opinion I shouldn't attack?

STFU you fake pos.

Phins 78 gets it....RE...7:17....

Phew. Thanks Kris I thought I was alone in that opinion. It's getting really bad. I'm glad I'm a big hockey fan. They couldn't mess with hockey that way, the few fans we have would revolt!

I do believe that Armando's Blog is the only one in the world with it's own Top Secret 007 Harrpy Agent!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........don't tell him I told you though. He'll have another "IMPLOSION" like he did last night-lol.

Agent Harrpy........come in Agent Harrpy! I believe there's been another BREACH!

QUICKLY now, there's no time to waste, Change your sign in name and Get On It!

(oh.......and PLEASE Agent Harrpy, do that thing where you hum the Batman Theme.......that's SO Kool!)

DADDA DAdda dadda-DADDA.........MONKEY BU-OY!

What Dupe - LMAO!

patterson and wallace sounds good to me.then go pass rush then db's top it of with o line.

Filthy amigo gang, love boys, gang of whatever you want to put me in. I'm proud to be part of that gang and I'll tell you why.

Those are the people who are real with me. Those are the people who disagree with me or agree but always give reasons. They always address me respectfully and I try my hardest to do the same for them. We may disagree and get heated once in a while but we never call each other names. These are the people I want to surround myself with.

You sir can stick with surrounding yourself with phonies and losers. People who are only here to illicit negative responses from other posters because it makes them feel strong and important. In other words, the dregs of society. That's your crowd, congrats, you will go far in life. I'll stick with the rationale and objective people.

TO BE......

Cant buy any Dolphin jerseys. All the players are gone within 2-3 years.

"Troll" is a compliment when relating to the Miami Dullfins.

Phins 78...

@ least you have an outlet....I am contemplating things that I will take up my time in the coming season/ years.....

I love spending time with my child....so its WIN WIN on Sunday for both of us should I lose my fanhood....

I'm in to fitness...and helping others achieve there goal....I am a certified personal trainer....but I have a real job....so I have never put it to use....so maybe I become a weekend trainer....

I doubt it tho....because I am really into this Cross-fit now.....and that is a whole new set of certs I would have to begin working on and completing....plus I am not that good @ it yet....

I love relaxing...so that is another option as well....but doing nothing is fine some Sundays...but to much of that will make me feel lazy....

And with that I'm out. I'm not sticking around for the mess that this place becomes after dark. Not in the mood for the BS and have better things to do with my time.

Could have some good conversations ALoco but as usual you crawl out from the gutter and drag the rest of us down with you. Enjoy your night pretending to be someone you're not.

Good riddance 78!

Sorry Master(baiter), so far Phins78 is handing you your ass.

He's been clear and concise. Making excellent points.

You, so far, have accused him of attacking because of your differing Dolphin Opinions.

I checked back(pretty far)and I've yet to find any Dolphin opinions from you WHATSOEVER!

You're sort of out there in fantasy land.

Phins78 has offered up his opions on quite a few football related topics.

In short, you're in over your head.......AGAIN!

Armando linebacker is still an option if Jarvis Jones is available. Misi does not fit as a linebacker in the defence. He does not cover or blitz well. He does play the run well. Wheeler is not a Sam linebacker either. Watch the game Maimi played against the Raiders and you will see that Fasono dominated him in the running game. He was sometimes pushed 5 yards back. Jones fits. He can blitz and cover and play the run as a Sam linebacker.

There are not many many bad words that can be spelled outright. Except for a few that can have an exclusively altogether different meaning. Like:

Dick = Male's Name
Ass = Donkey

Herald just recently got laxed on ass. Previously it couldnt be used without alterations in spelling.

Pussie can be used too but only in cat form. LOL...

Step One, admitting
1. My name is ALoco, I am a worthless troll.
2. My name is Home, I am a worthless troll.

Boys,a quick queston,Now that they have a top-notch WR for Mr.Tennehill, and a beast at TE,I believe that Milleris a little to small to pound the rock 15 to 20 times a game, Thoughts on getting a beast at RB with the first pick?

F.U.C.K can be used but it has to be in an altered form. LOL...

we will see how this season goes....I became a fan of football for the controlled violence....once the game is no longer violent....then it may no longer hold my interest....

I just can't help thinking of Lombardi watching a game today and him wondering why so many people are attending a practice.

I do hope that the flags the QB's start wearing match their uniforms!

Please dont be such a B.I.T.C.H ASS ok? LOL...

The troll has odin in the palm of his hand. Turns him into a degenerate chimpanzee at will.

A night with my mom will cost you less then the condom in the Strip Club bathroom machine.

The best beast rb is Lacy and I haven't seen one mock that has him going 1st rd.

I like Matt Barkley with the 1st pick to beat out Tanny.

ALoco's ass is used because he is someone's blotch?? Sounds right

I like Matt Barkley with the 1st pick to beat out Tanny.

IM NOW A MEMBER OF THE MARINATED ACORNS? TOO F.U.C.K.I.N.G FUNNY..............................

ALoco and Home are the reasons abortion is legal.

Ive been here since 2007 LOL...

If the Dolphins are really not interested in Rhodes at 12 and sign Winston or trade for Albert, I'm lost at what bpa would be for us at 12.

I'm starting to like Desmond Trufant better than Rhodes anyway, so I'm for trading down.

Just gotta find someone who wants to move up to 12. Doesn't seem likely though.

like Matt Barkley with the 1st pick to beat out Tanny.

Posted by: Gregg in Miramar | March 21, 2013 at 07:40 PM

Cason Palmer,Marc Sanchez,Etc,Etc, Do I need to go on?
Barkley is a product of he teams Offensive success.., Another words JUST SAY NO!!!!!!!

I'm still confused.

better get alberts and grimes

good to see revis gone to bucs and sad to see duper arrested

I am with the Dolphins on their analysis of Rhodes. I have been saying that taking Rhodes at 12 would be a mistake. There is only one corner worth taking in the top 20 picks and that is Milliner.

I have a feeling that the fins are putting a smoke screen up when it comes to Lane Johnson. He is definately the Philbing type of OL. He is fast and athletic. He is a total stud. The only others that I would take at that pick are: Warmack, Cooper, and Ansag. Tavon Austin is also worthy of being picked this high but the fins cannot take another receiver.

Thats funny @ 7:37...

I think thats the thing dusty. I gotta see us sign someone like Grimes and Albert to fill obvious holes before I can get settled into this bpa thing.

agree rick, ton of holes to fill still

Omar Kelly is reporting that the Rams are all in on Austin. They will either take him at 16 or 22. I think that the fins may be able to partner with the Vikings who are also looking for receivers for a trade. Trade down to the Vikings at 23 and take Tyler Eifert TE and pick up another 2nd. In the second round we would be able to take 2a. OT Menelik Watson . 2b. DE Tank Carradine, 2c. CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson. 3a. G Justin Pugh 3b. RB Le’Veon Bell.

Tavon Austin is going to draw some interest and may our ticket to trading down.

no thanks orlando, we have zero corners, we better get one early

Orlando Omar is the god of ignorance, If ignorance was "Blessed" He'd have been named POPE Take his Word as Craap.JMOH.

Getting Blidi Wreh-Wilson in the second round would be early. You cannot reach for a corner at 12 and Milliner will be long gone. Milliner is the only true shut down corner in this draft. There are a lot of solid corners after that but none of the others are #1 type corners in the NFL.

The top TE's in this draft are average at best, don't waste time on them.

maybe not orlando buyt u cant make up some trade down either until it happens, we need a corner, might have to reach like we did with qb last year, our secondary is horrible right now

There is really a man crush in S> FLorida with Winston. He would just be a stop gap. If he was so good, KC would not cut him afte one year. Teams hold on to great tackles. No matter what we either have to draft a tackle or guard in the 1st or 2nd round this year. Both of our current guards are FA at the end of the year and don't really fit Philbin's OL and they obvously need a young tackle (Winston is a 1 year fill in).

agree winston sucked last year here in kc, was horrible in pass blocking
