Dolphins open some draft possibilities, close others

Practically every day, someone who follows me on my twitter feed asks me what the Dolphins are going to do in the first round of the draft even though the draft is one month away.

Last week, I said the Dolphins were heavily interested in Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

I jumped the gun.

Rhodes is a fine player. He looks the part at 6-1. He plays with some nastiness. And the Dolphins do indeed like him. But that has to be measured in degrees and I was told recently that he probably isn't the guy in the first round because he's not a 100 percent system fit for the Dolphins.

Me: :-(

Rhodes needs to be in a system where he's getting his hands on a receiver. He might be able to learn the discipline of combo coverages that inlcude a lot of zone work and playing quarters. But that's not his game. He's more a press corner, folks.

So there's that.

I also said early on in the process that I would scream if the Dolphins used their first overall pick on an offensive or defensive lineman. Since general manager Jeff Ireland arrived with Bill Parcells, the Dolphins have tried to upgrade those two units in the first round three out of five drafts -- with Jake Long, Mike Pouncey and Jared Odrick as first-round picks.

Well, guess what?

The Dolphins are open to upgrading those two spots in the draft again -- perhaps even in the first round. Ireland wants to sorely keep the defensive line, a team strength, very strong. Two days ago, I reported to you the club has parted ways with Tony McDaniel. Well, the Dolphins want to add a defensive tackle. And, as you know, a pass-rusher is something the Dolphins continue to consider in free agency and will consider in the draft.

And this is supposedly a great year for defensive ends. So that is a serious possibility.

The Dolphins also will look at offensive line, particularly offensive tackle. Indeed, even if the team signs Eric Winston to play right tackle, I don't believe the club sees him as a long-term solution. Even if the left tackle job is handed to Jonathan Martin, the Dolphins want a fallback.

Well, drafting a left tackle and moving Martin back to right tackle is a possibility.

I've mentioned Oklahoma's Lane Johnson on twitter as a possible first-round selection. The Dolphins like him. They don't love him. Yes, they agree he's a first-round talent but what I'm hearing is not at No. 12 in Miami's eyes.

So where does that leave the Dolphins in the first round? Well, that's the point. The Dolphins have worked this offseason with the idea of filling in as many gaps on the team as possible. No the cornerback spot is not filled, but I believe the club will get serious in the next day or so about trying to sign Brent Grimes or some cornerback option so that cornerback is no longer a glowing, ominous and obvious need.

Basically, the Dolphins want to go to the draft with a wide field of possibilities. They want to draft the best available player (BAP) and not draft necessarily for need. The club drafted for need in 2009 when Vontae Davis and Sean Smith were added in the first two rounds. Neither are on the team four years later.

Lesson learned, I think."

"I don’t know that we’re complete at any position," coach Joe Philbin said this week. "I think hopefully what’s happened with some of the free agency moves is it gives Jeff more latitude to just go find good football players.

"We’re as interested in adding, again that term, it’s a vague term, but good football players to the roster at a variety of positions. I don’t know that we’re locked and loaded anywhere. That’s not a bad thing. I don’t know that many of the other 15 [coaches] that are in the room today are locked and loaded at a ton of spots. We’ve got to add good players at every position."

Yes, I'd say every position except quarterback, linebacker, punter and kicker is a first-round option for the Dolphins.

The offensive line is an option, as I've explained. Defensive line is an option. Cornerback, but not Rhodes, is an option. Safety is an option. Running back, following the loss of Reggie Bush is an outside and long-odds options I suppose. Receiver pops back into the picture as an option. And tight end is an option -- although I do not see a tight end in the draft worthy of the No. 12 overall selection.

The Dolphins have opened the field for themselves. Smart.

I hope don't need our OT's to be running down cb's who intercept passes.

Just kidding Ray. Johnson would be a good choice if we don't address OT in free agency or trade.

The hell with Ireland and his pro scout team. I know better after reading ESPN and PFT.

Hey, my dumbass sister knows more then Irescum.

Miami's #1 need is corner back. Reported that they were not interested in Xavier R. so we might move up and take Millner. wonder what it would take?

Dolfan Rick
Yeah Lane Johnson would help out if Tanny throw ints. Lol its going to be very interesting. if JI screws up this draft he is gone and he knows it, by the way did anyone know that JI sold his house? I don't know what that suppose to mean butiI think he knows what the consequence's are if he doesn't hit on at least 4 starters out of this draft.

We need a LT and RB a lot more then cornerback.

Ray,

Didn't know he sold his house. Hope it's premature because if he's fired it means we sucked.

Sinatra,

Google point value chart. It will tell you all you need to know about cost for moving up or down in draft.

Maybe LT but replacing S.Smith will be a real need. If we have to we can go with Miller and thomas. rb shuold be in a later rd.

Bloggers know less than nothing. They succumb to the sports sites, writers who profess do know something, yet no NFL team would pay them a nickel for their services. Yet, bloggers drink their words as truth and believe they actually know more than nothing...when they don't.

Senso,

Tradin down for Odrick was an entire different beast. It was in anticipation of losing Soliai and have Starks go from DE to NT.

Ireland traded to down to get a quality 3-4 DE to replace Starks at DE. He traded down to get Odrick because 3-4 DE's arent the sack machines for that defense, but you still need a high quality player at that position too.

I didnt know much about 3-4 DE's at the time and hated the move too. But since Ive learned more about the 3-4 DE's, I understand that move a lot more.

Yesterday, we could have had a true alpha receiver or great safety instead, both of which would have been more valuable TODAY. We wouldn't have had to break the bank for Wallace and sign an average slow receiver.

We as fans keep talking our needs. Yet we dont fully understand what Coyle is looking for on the defensive side of the ball. Yeah he's looking to fill certain positions on that side, but it has to be a player with a particular skillset to marry into Coyle's defensive philosophy.

As fans we think that is as easy as picking the best rated player at that position. But it isnt if the only weaknesses that player has doesnt make him a fit for that position.

Other than this, as fans, all we know is that we need a OT and a blocking TE. I trust we get the players with the closest skillset to fit the system on both sides of the ball.

It could be far from popularity contest and popular playuer names on draft day. So dont be too surprised if you go WTH?

I echo the words of Asi...that is my point.

We need to sign Brandon Moore as soon as possible.

This guy is pretty good, next too Pouncey he should be even better.

Cogs, Pouncey and Moore can hold down the middle for the next 4 to 5 years. They'll be solid and give us time to solidify the resy of the Line and other areas.

I would sign Moore TONIGHT!

Posted by: Asi | March 21, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Brandon Marshall was supposed to solve the alpha wr part. Outside of Odrick's IR rookie season, he's been rted like top 5 to 10 amongst 3-4 DE's. So he was well worth where he was drafted. The downside is that 3-4 DE's arent expected to be high sack guy.

Could have had Earl Thomas. But do you realize Earl Thomas had 3 picks in 2012 while Reshad Jones had 4 picks? Yes, and Jones was drafted 3-4 rd later.

So go figure.

Senso,

With Dez Bryant we would also need to hire his babysitter. The Cowboys still struggle to make the playoffs with Bryant, and when they do, its still one and done.

He's good, but he hasnt been a huge diffrence maker, as far as getting them where they expect to be.

Good point YG, Ireland will draft a safety in this draft to compete with Clemmons, but he wont do it at 12. Both Jones and Clemmons were 5th rounders. I see him taking one in round 2-5 again this year

Yesterday, fair points.

odin,

Dont hold your breath that Cogs will be here ast this season. He's a fa next year, if he isnt willing to resign really cheap, you can trash your 4yr plan for him. LOL...

If we sign Moore and draft Warmack or Cooper, he might be gone this year! Getting "I MISS US" texts from Jake!

Odin-Douche, Tell us about the time you were so giddy about taking your kid out huntin while high on Morphine..

R

Guys,

I may be missing something, but, when looking at all of the players available in the 1st rd. The player most fitting a need position for our "SYSTEM" is Lane Johnson.

Philbin prefers zone blocking. Lane's skillset is the perfect marriage for the kind of olineman Philbin desires. Big, strong, super athletic, handles speed rushers with ease as well as bull rushers.

I absolutely will not be surprised in the least, if Lane is our #1 pick and the top rated player on our entire draft board.

With Lane Johnson, because of his superior speed at his size, you can even run tackle pulling run plays. He also should have very little problem to the 2nd level and blocking on run plays.

He's perfect for Philbins system. A far better system fit than Long ever was.

Guys, just remember on draft day, it will be far more about that player's skill sets and system fit than name recognition alone.

Rhodes is a reach at 12. No doubt about it.

But, knowing that "Team Sources" are letting it be known that we're not interested.........this time of year.........Hmmmmmmmm.........

Having said that, I don't know how we go about getting Rhodes without some type of trade down.

On the same subject, Dimitri Patterson is 29 years old. Undrafted Rookie Free Agent in 2005(Skins)and spent the year on the practice squad.

He didn't start a game until 2010 for the Eagles. In 9 starts he had 4 Int's, one for a 40 yard TD.

The Browns signed him as an unrestricted free agent and he had a good season as the starting nickle. He stayed there until the team was sold and gutted.
================================================

I said all that to ASK this: How can anyone say that CB isn't our biggest need. Right now we have Richard Marshall and probably Patterson as our best two corners.

Then it's RJ Stanford.

Nolan Carroll

Posey, Julian

Presley, De'Andre
==================

Saying that too say this: WE NEED BRENT GRIMES!

Marshall and Grimes would start, Patterson at Nickle and Stanford and Carroll for depth. I hate Carroll.

If we don't sign Grimes it get real bad, real quick. And that's how it's going to look unless we pull AT LEAST one starting corner out of the draft.

Why don't you tell us, you're the one that wrote it.

Remember, back before Armando started banning people for impostoring others?

For all the pollution you spout off around here, at least we can thank you for being one of the reasons Armando instituted the upgraded policy.

The only thing is, he should have banned you for life.

No Shyt Sherlock?

Well Thanks for stating the OBVIOUS!

(And he questioned the intelligence of others just two posts earlier)

Jump Through **THAT** Hoop Master(baiter)-ROTFLMAO!!!!

odin,

Im sure Ireland and his scouts have had at least 100 draft eligible cb's underneath their Hubble electron microscope in preparation for the draft.

If any of us here thinks Ireland isnt aware of the present cb situation and what is. We are even dumber than we think that Ireland is.

At this point, Ireland has a greater list of the strengths and weaknesses of evry cb on our roster than we could ever dream of. So lets stop crying like a bunch of little girls. LOL...

Yeah, yeah, YEAH!

It's a good day to be a Dolphins Fan!

School starts tommorrow, so I'm taking my 15 year old out for some last minute target shooting.

Taking him on his first Goose Hunting Outing next weekend!

Shooting the shyt out of something should off set the Morphine quite well!

ValHalla!!!!

OdinDouche, I had to go back into the "Files", But here it is., Just admit your a drug infested hippie.
And by the way, anyone interested can go back to this blog and read the hippies posting, He was going on and on about some problem he was happening and was looking forward to getting some Morphine ETC,ETC,ETC..., Just admit your just weak.

Well. time to go. Odin youre starting that copy, paste, reply garbage again.

WTH is with that sht, man? Why is so important that you feel you have to do this. Trolls pound you because you give them open invitation to so with the copy, paste, replies.

When will you learn to ignore and move on? You spend an entire night doing this sht. Pick your battles. Show them youre in control and not them.

OBL, Wow,I'll check it out, And by the way Mr.Odin, Thats just bad parenting., You should be ashamed of yourself.

Outside of Odrick's IR rookie season, he's been rted like top 5 to 10 amongst 3-4 DE's. So he was well worth where he was drafted.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone 4Ever! | March 21, 2013 at 10:54 PM
-----------------------

YG,

Who rated him top 5 to 10?

Outside of his Rookie(IR) season he only played one year at 3-4 DE(Coyle brought in the 4-3 after that).

His 6 sacks that year were good. But other than that he only had 22(20 solo)tackles and 1 FF - 1 int.

Not bad for youngster, but I'd say it was hardly enough to be ranked Top 10.

Not attacking or trying to start a fight YG. Just curious if you were "Guess-timating" or if you actually read he was ranked top 10?

If we sign Grimes and Osi i think it sets us up sweet to move up and get Lane. That lets us leave Martin on the right (where i think he projects more to). it also allows us to take a good DT (if thats BPA on Irelands board) to rpl. Starks or Soliaa next year. Gonna be an interesting month, thats for sure!

YG,

Not holding my breath on Cogs at all.

The fact that his contract will be up, just furthers my argument that we should sign Moore even.........even Moore!

YG4L, Odindouche has more control over his over active bladder then he does his idiotic posts, This hippie should have been banned years ago.
Actually he should have been "Put Down" like a Rabid dog IMHO.

So lets stop crying like a bunch of little girls. LOL...

====================

And how is that any different than you whinning like a little girl over Lane Johnson?

Oh wait, you were crying earlier, I meant GUSHING like a Little Girl over Lane Johnson-LOL...

See, you had to go and get smar......er.......

You had to be a wise gu.......wait no......that won't work either.......

Ah, how about this, if you're going to be a Jackass, why don't you explain how Odrick was a top 5 to 10 - 3-4 DE again.

Convince us that you didn't pull that crap right out of your ass. Anything to "FIT" your story eh?

Was it Pro Football Talk?

Maybe Pro Football Focus?

I'll be waiting...............

Though if Armando was to ban Idot Odin,YG4L And Dashi his hits would go down to about 30 a day., Well armando I guess its quanity over quility.
Go figure, Anyways girls, I Gotta get some sleep, Got a JOB to go to.(Something I know you three morons dont have cause your on here 24/7.)

Odrick was drafted way too high.

Well. time to go. Odin youre starting that copy, paste, reply garbage again.

Oops, I did it again - lol....

I'll tell you this, at least I didn't start acting like a complete jackass(like you did @ 11:27).

And I surely didn't fabricate any lies about Odrick's rankings the ONE SEASON he played 3-4 DE.

But you have a problem with someone copy and pasting?

You freaking Tard, I see you do it too-lol....

Forget the Trolls YG, THAT is why most here, including Mark In Toronto, think you're a numbskull.

YG, Join in to get ODINDOUCHE BANNED, The later it gets the more vulger this hippie gets, More then likely because of heavey drinking., OdinDouche, Go get some help before your liver falls out.

Is Winston still a possibility as well as Moore? That would be a decent line as long as Martin pans out. Draft a tackle and a guard for competition with Samuda, Garner, and Jerry. May the best 8 or 9 win.

Some competition for spots who would have ever thought it? Got to add lots of cheap, young depth. Push those vets for playing time kids!

5-11 next season after losing 7 starters?

But thanks again for being the reason I sign in Blue(NOW-not then)and Armando bans bloggers like you-ROTFLMAO!

Unlike you, I still fulfilled my parenting obligations, DESPITE being OUT and UP late that night.

Had it been you, you would have just pawned your Kids Gun Collection for MORE METH!!!!

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

(BTW - Ask me about the Michigan State Police Officers Daughter again sometime. I NEVER gwet tired of that story. Not only that, there's a SEQUEL! Yep, Uh Huh!)

I see nothing that would warrant a top 10 pick in Lane Johnson. He is a very good pass protector but his blocking is subpar, many times on the floor. He seems agile enough to fit in a zone-blocking scheme but who knows, will take time.

Posted by: Odins Bloated Liver. | March 21, 2013 at 11:58 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO................................. I would never want odin banned from hre. At least if he's here we know where he is at noights.

Gotta keep the women and children safe you know. LOL...

Oscar,

I really dont think we'll have to trade up to get Lane Johnson. The way some mocks are looking he'll fall right into our laps at #12.

The troll turns odin into a driveling chimp at will. One post and odin spends the rest of the night writing like he just had a labotomy...bwaaahaaaaahaa

Sad really. Very sad.,

My post was too long and I had to E-Mail Armando about you re-posting your original impostoring.

You've already been banned once for impostoring me, that much I know. Armando confirmed it too me, without actually confirming it, if you know what I mean.

BTW-Thanks for the opportunity to recap.

I was having problems and was trying to get some dope?

Is that your story now? It keeps changing, thats even different from the first two times you started posting this junk-LOL.

I was on the Trampoline with a Smoking Hot Hottie, Partying down. It was an unfortunate accident, but hey, at least I got the Poosy earlier in the evening.

I got a shot of Morphine at the Hospital, the **NIGHT BEFORE I took my kids out. I think you jealous of me in general and especially the fact I got the GOOD POOSY and the LEGAL Shot from the Doctor(unlike you, I didn't get down on my knees to EARN a hit)-LOL.

You keep getting this part wrong and I don't understand. I don't know how this helps your lie? We went out the NEXT MORNING to **SIGHT-IN** our Rifles, Not Hunt Dilweed-lol.

But thanks again for being the reason I sign in Blue(NOW-not then)and Armando bans bloggers like you-ROTFLMAO!

Oscar,

At the Senior Bowl Johnson was rated the 2nd best bloker at by the pro scouts. 2nd behind only Fisher and better than Joeckel.

Lane also absolutely sifled the speed rushers there. He had them in complete lockdown.

oscar,

Forgive the typos, Im sleep typing right now. LOL....

I was trying to be civil and talk football earlier YG. I'll try again.

===================

I was thinking just the opposite. Beyond his play on the field, he tore it up at the combine.

After his performance there, I figure he'll go top 10 for sure. Some wensites I read were even suggesting that he might now go higher than Fisher.

BTW - If both were on the board, I would take Johnson over Fisher. Fisher has the measurables, but the competitions levels he faced are highly suspect.

(OMG-I sounde3d like a bigger Dupe than Kiper on that one. I'm not bald, but I just might get me a Hairpiece for this years draft. One just like Kipers)

Cheers!!!!

BAP. Mando is an idiot. And he gets PAID to do this.

Hey Monkey Bu-oY?

You still there?

If you are, I got something for you:

Joe Namth was born in Alabama!!!!
