Dolphins interested in Rashard Mendenhall

The Dolphins will obviously add a running back to compete if Reggie Bush is allowed to walk in free agency as I've reported. Bottom line, they need more bodies because Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Jonas Gray and Marcus Thigpen aren't enough bodies to take to training camp.

And a competition between Miller and Thomas for the starting job seems less that inspiring because Miller seems to clearly be the better back.

But Rashard Mendenhall to the Dolphins?

Well, that's the buzz going around the NFL as voiced most loudly by NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah on his twitter feed over the weekend. Jeremiah, a former NFL scout, obviously has connections around the league so he's as credible as most.

But Rashard Mendenhall to the Dolphins?

Apparently the Dolphins are eyeing more than one prospective Steelers free agent. Obviously the Dolphins cannot sign Mendenhall until 4 p.m. on Tuesday when unrestricted free agency's signing period begins. So we're talking interest in the abstract right now.

But Mendenhall is an interesting guy.

Yes, he has loads of talent. Yes, he is a load himself at 5-10 and 225 pounds. Yes, he is very fast, having clocked in the 4.4s coming out of college. He was even fast enough to be Pittsburgh's kickoff return man earlier in his career.

Mendenhall, 25, also has two 1,000-yard seasons to his credit, those coming in 2009 and 2010.

But Mendenhall is something of an enigma and 2012 was a disaster for many reasons.

In January 2012 he suffered a torn ACL injury to a knee and had to spend his entire offseason rehabilitating the injury. Unlike Adrian Peterson who recovered from a similar injury like a champion, Mendenhall languished and simply wasn't the same player.

He not only played only six games but languished by gaining 3.6 yards per carry. And when coaches didn't think he was trying very hard, they deactivated him for a game against San Diego. Well, Mendenhall didn't bother to show up for that tilt. And so he was suspended for the next game against Dallas.

Mendenhall also stirred some controversy in May 2011 when he got on twitter and chided Americans for celebrating the killing of Osama bin Laden. One of his tweets seemed to suggest he didn't blame bin Laden for 9-11 by raising the possibility of a conspiracy theory.

Mendenhall tried to walk back his position by first tweeting he was just trying to stir conversation and then apologized outright through the Steelers. But Champion Sporting Goods dropped Mendenhall from an endorsement deal.

Mendenhall's, cough, interesting history, diminished production, and Pittsburgh's difficult salary cap situation are undoubtedly reasons the Steelers haven't re-signed the player. That the Dolphins are reportedly interested in Mendenhall -- something I've not idenpendently confirmed -- might be yet another example of the paradigm shift the team is undergoing in its approach to free agency.

The Denver Broncos are also reportedly interested in Mendenhall.

Mando is working late tonight.

Cheap enough and I'm cool with it. A long time has passed since his peak production and I'm sure his pending contract weighed heavy on his head last year.

He'll know this is his last shot so maybe he can get his head right. Suppose there's enough tape to see if he was just not thinking straight last year.

Lets go for it!
He can be both cheap and productive. Worth a try.

Mando; you write there is a paradigm shift when it comes to FA`s. Would you also say there is a paradigm shift towards the media? Has the Dolphins opened up more to the media now? Are they more "friendly" towards media now? There is less negative talk about Ireland now and maybe that also will affect the way Ireland does his business. Your thoughts?

This is surprising even from Fireland. Low ball Reggie Bush and send flowers and chocolates to knuckleheads like Brandon Gibson and Rashard Mendenhall. Sabotage from the inside. Somebody tell me again why Stephen Ross allows himself to be Fireland's billionaire puppet? Did Ross buy the Dolphins just so he could claim his losses on his taxes?

Just speculation!! We will like many other teams continually be linked with lots of players until FA 'officially' starts. How many are genuine? Who knows, and at this point the media are just guessing and pretending to be in the know

I like Brandon Gibson.

I agree with you reg. It is just like last year with Peyton Manning. Every city he visited the media would immediately have that city as the front runner. Total joke. No slam on Armando, though, because we all have to pay our mortgages.

Would be interesting. But not sure if he entirely recovered from ACL problems. Will he stay healthy? I don't think he'll come cheap, neither. For RB, I would rather go for Steven Jackson. This guy wants have a winning season, and I think the Fins, thanks to their salary cap, will be a winning team next season.

fireland, low ball reggie bush? he was adequate but please. He wants about 6 mil a year, he is not worth 6 mil and i would have "low balled" him at 3 as well. let him play in detroit or wherever, but the starting miami RB will have more yards then bush no matter where he ends up.

That is the problem with Ireland he is running the dolphins like a walmart, Bush is way better then mendenhall it sucks to sit here and watch the same crap every year we really need a new GM, YOU CANNOT CONTINUE TO GET PLAYERS REALLY CHEAP WHO ARE DECLINING OR ARE NOT VERY GOOD TO BEGIN WITH AN EXPECT TO COMPETE PLEASE FIRE IRELAND NOW AND LET PHILBIN PICK THE PLAYERS

Mendenhall can block. Tanehill should like this

I'm not really sold on Mendenhall. If there is baggage, forget him.

Would all of you on your Reggie Bush rants please stop? there is a reason why the Dolhins are not resigning him. You dont pay $6 million to a part-time back. He is a luxury. I like him- productive and a total team first guy. I get it- but he is not coming back. My guess is that his agent put out feelers at the combine and arizona or detroit probably both told his agent they would be interested at 6 million. So why would Bush give the Dolphins a hometown discount when he knows he can get paid more on the open market? Not to mention, this might be his last chance at a substantial contract- he is 29 and a running back. I dont blame him one bit for achieving max dollar.

He's like a worse version of Ronnie Brown. And that's not saying much.

I like Brandon Gibson too--and for a low contract, whats wrong with seeing what Mendenhall can offer?--yo, few of these guys are boy scouts fellas......remember that any of them can get cut before or during training camp so no one says these guys are on the roster come opening day (remember the uproar when they signed Garrard last year?.....cut him with no drama)--also doesnt say they cant add additional RBs--whats the problem here?

He's going to get medium budget f.agents, he'll draft 2-3 wr's on draft weekend !!

I like the idea...He had a bad year? So what? The entire Steeler roster had a bad year...It doesn't make all of their players bad...Mettenhall is big, he can block, and most importantly, has SPEED...Which is the thing we lack a lot of...I'm on board for Mettenhall and Miller...And for the love of God, get rid of Thomas...Keith Byars in his prime was faster than Thomas...And Byars was a FB...

We have to have some depth behind Miller and Thomas. Mendenhall should should fit the bill for that if the price is right.

make up your mind folks.....you want Ireland/Fins to think outside the box and leave no stone unturned, yet when they do you get all wiggy--again, signing them or not is no guarantee that they're around later in the year.....can nix any of them easily.

A great big NO to Mendenhall coming to Miami.Anyone who thinks Al Queda wasnt 100% responsible for the events of Sept 11 2001 isnt welcome here regardless of how good a football player they are.Does North Korea have a football team?If so then that would be a fitting place for him.

What will you guys do if J.Ireland decides not to pursue Wallace&Jennings and lands Gibson Mendenhall and Woodsen just curious ?

I don't see a paradigm shift in FA. the Dolphins went for Chad Johnson and Manning last year - a combination of old, issues and injuries. I don't see how Woodson and Mendenhall is anything but more of the same. For little money they're worth a shot but...

The only reason to bring in old players is to win now. Do the Dolphins really think they're contenders for a SB in the 2013 season? Play offs yes, but SB - no chance.

I like the idea of Gibson, he's been productive on a bad team. I'd also like to hear of some consideration of Amendola - on a contract weighted towards appearances. If he was healthy for 16 games he'd be as productive as Welker.

I'm not worried one bit about dragging ugly politics into the question of whether he can he play football. I'm not looking for choir boys...we need guys that can play football period. He's not a wife beater or a dog killer. Yeah I'm on board to take a flyer on this guy at a very good price.

He's probably better at this point than Thomas and has serious upside at the right price. The injury is my concern but 18 months later should be able to come into camp and play well if it has healed and is no longer an issue.

I also like the idea of Charles Woodson...I like it a lot...I don't care how old he is, he's still an awesome safety...Sign him and draft a young guy like a Vaccaro or Elam...That would be some serious upgrading compared to Clemmons and everybody else we have...

dad, I'm not too worried about the political stuff with Mendenhall either. What I AM concerned with, however, is the other character issues that put him in disfavor in Pittsburgh. Look, the Steelers are an elite team because they have an excellent organization. They are getting rid of this guy for a reason (more than the CAP situation). If they couldn't control him, what makes people think Cardinal Philbin will do any better? Plus, folks talk about how Thomas is inconsistent. Let me introduce you to Mr. Inconsistency. I watch games every year with my Steeler fan friends, and one of their biggest gripes is this guy.

No thanks on Mendenhall unless he's coming in at minimum cost. Low risk, high reward is the only reason to grab this guy.

One of his tweets seemed to suggest he didn't blame bin Laden for 9-11 by raising the possibility of a conspiracy theory.

Good Rashard !!!!
He has a brain !!!!

Big day, Go dolphins. thanks for all the inside info Mando.

I don't honestly feel the Steelers are elite anymore. They are a good team with a good organization and a coach who is regressing the team.

If he is a character problem I think Philbin will take care of that quickly with another "I'm not feeling it moment" ala Chad Johnson. I just don't see him as putting up with non sense. Like I said at the right price...a flyer is worth the risk. I still see the team drafting a RB late whether this works out or not.

We dont need other teams headaches.

I like Brandon Gibson, I like Mike Wallace, I like Greg Jennings....I like any WR who is an improvement on the entire group we have, including Hartline. He's a great teammate and has a lot of talent. But all of the above are just better than him. And we need to surround him and Tanny with BETTER players. So if we sign any of these UFA's (or any as talented) then I like it...

.....GO FINS!!!!!!

Fellas honestly I want Ireland to draft 3 receivers in this year's draft, that though aI get an creepy feeling they're going to be a lot angry&very disappointed dolphins fans in here by Friday !!

....also...sign Mendenhal with an injury clause....sign Woodson with a participation clause.....they both will come at a good price....and we need BETTER players....

....did I say that already ?.....

Yo Mace.....I hope your feelings are incorrect on that...

......I think the opposite...I think Ireland and company hits it out of the park this week....

This franchise is total GARBAGE!

If we don't get either Wallace or Jennings. I want first two picks to be WR. If I had my way. Not interested in the rest of the FA group that much.

We are the fan base....we need to be protagonists...we are the optimists...we are the cheering section....we need to stay behind the team....

....think big....think positive....if you think small you become small...if you think big , you open the door to greatness....

....this week, think very big dolfans...

GO FINS!!!!

Am I in the minority here or my biggest problem with this guy one of two things not mentioned by anyone ...

a) he appears softer than Reggie and less dependable

b) he had a major fumble in the SB that was the turning point in the loss to the Packers.

Mark...the fumble happened, can't be ignored, true..

...but ..softer than reggie? Mendenhall is 5'10 225

.........Reggie is a buck eighty soaking wet...

....just sayin'

No more Dallas Rejects.

Wallace, and Mendenhall, Steelers Rejects from now on. Yeahh, the Bill Paracells Way!!

To dadsmithwest @ 8:43....right on , dude....

......I'm hearin' ya.....

Tavon Austin has moved up to the #10 position on NFL Draft Tracker. Cordarelle Patterson has slid to #14 with DeAndre Hopkins at #21 and Keenan Allen @ 25.

Quite a jump for Tavon since the combine and really high for a guy with such physical traits. Should the Dolphins pick him if he is around at #12?

To Mace @ 8:07......Gibson, Mendenhall, Woodson we take @ the right price with clause protection...absolutely for it

Mendenhall 2- 1000yd Seasons(1108,1273), 25 Years Old

R.Bush Barely 1-1000 Yds Season(1028), 29 Years Old

Mendenhall already has had A Better Career.

Reggie Bush Is Not That Good.

A good idea if you ask me. A few weeks ago I advocated giving a low ball offer to Mendenhall. This team needs a brusing back who can get tough yards. If he won't take low ball money, draft a guy later in the draft.

After Lane fumbled in short yardage a couple of times & D. Thomas` concussion risk, the team needs a short yardage option.

BTW, I noticed after I left yesterday Craig M continued to insinuate I am YG. Was I YG when you called my life sad or called my kid disabled & deserved it?

When it suits you, I'm not YG. When you're being mobbed by multiple people who despise you, I'm YG because you don't waanna accept how many people think you're a dope.

I wonder who I'll be today? LOL

I hate how all these haters are talking garbage about Ireland and not singing Bush, but no one remembers that Ireland got Bush for Jonathan Amaya (Heard anything on him lately) and swapping 6rd picks... This guy is a pretty decent GM.

*1086

For Bush

Mark,

Mendhall almost single handely got the Steelers to the Superbowl that year. The Jets had Ben rattled in the title game & it was Mendenhall making the jets miss & made BIG plays in that game.

Bush & Thomas fumble alot. Thomas is injury prone. Bush gets nicked & dinged on fewer carries than menenhall does. If Miller is gonna be the guy, Mendenhalls touches will be less & may stay helathy.

Make him a low ball offer & the risk will be just as low.

..Funny. The same headlines in todays local about Mendenhall to the Broncos.

Dashi..You just made my point @ 9:24..

On the RB position.....Miller is coming on....

..he needs help...he needs a complimentary back with muscle

....the team needs a RB who can get the two or three yards needed to move the chains, and need a goal line presence to keep defenses honest..

...Mendenhall appears capable of filling these needs...

Why go after Gibson? I'm hoping is just a smokescreen for Wallace's agent b/c if we sign Gibson, why on hell did we give Hartline, a WR with the same characteristics, a boatload of cash. Don't get me wrong, I think signing Hartline was a terrific decision but if we land Gibson and no Wallace this offseason will already be a disaster.

Mendenhall at the right price would be a decent move. I'd still try to draft Lattimore if he falls late in the draft.

THIS SHOULD BE OUR YEAR.

AND WITH A GREAT JUMP START ON YEARS TO COME.

WHILE MORE THAN HALF THE TEAMS IN THE NFL ARE TRYING TO CUT TIES WITH PLAYERS TO GET UNDER THE CAP WE ARE SEEING SO MUCH MORE TALENT IN FA THEN EVER BEFORE.

THIS WILL ALLOW TEAMS TO UNDER PRICE MOST PLAYERS.

WHILE THE PLAYERS ARE SO UPSET WITH THEIR LAST TEAM's OFFER THE MARKET FOR THEM MIGHT JUST BE THE SAME.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO GET PAID AS MUCH AS THEY CAN BUT WITHOUT BUYERS THE PRICE GOES DOWN AND DOWN UNTIL IT's ALMOST FREE.

CHRIS CLEMONS IS IN A BAD SPOT RIGHT NOW.

REED, GOLDSON,

LONG WILL NOT GET 11 MILLION.

HE MIGHT GET UPSET BECAUSE THERE's SO MUCH TALENT OUT THERE IN BOTH FA AND THE DRAFT TEAMS ARE GOING TO WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE DRAFT.

HE MIGHT GET 5 MILL A YEAR IF HE's NOT PICKED UP TOMORROW.

THOSE WHO WANT JENNINGS MIGHT GET THEIR WISH AS WELL.

INJURED AND 30?

WITH AS MANY AS 10 WRs COMING OUT IN THE THE DRAFT.

HE CAN WANT ALL HE WANTS I CAN't SEE HIM GETTING BIG MONEY.

I CAN't SEE HIM GETTING PICKED UP BEFORE THE DRAFT.

THERE's JUST WAY TO MUCH TALENT AND NOT ENOUGH TEAMS WITH MONEY.

I THINK JEFF SHOULD TAKE A TRIP TO A BASMENT BARGAIN SALE. TO SEE HOW IT's DONE.

CAUSE THIS IS THE YEAR YOU MAY GET A USED 2011 BENZ FOR THE PRICE OF A 2002 FORD.

I would think the answer would be to draft a guy 4th round or later. I think Mendenhall at 25 and with interest from teams like Denver will ask for too much money. There will be other, cheaper vets available. If we can't get a draft choice, then a cheap vet would be the way to go. I don't believe Mendenhall will be cheap.

DD,

No Problem. Dashi Has Been Stating The Facts For A While For The Reggie Fans. REGGIE BARELY HAS 1 - 1000YD SEASON. A lot Of RB's Have 1!!

If You Are A Phin Fan You Remember A RB By The Name Of K.Abdul-Jabbar. One Of The RB's When Marino Had No Running Game. Even He Had A 1100+ Yd Season!! And We All Still Wanted His Head!!

But Because It Is Reggie F'ing Bush!! We All Need To Admire And Worship Him!!

Even Slow Footed L.Smith Was A Better RB In Miami Than R.Bush. L.Smith Gained Over 1100 Yds In 1 Season. And Had A 200 TD Rushing Game In The Playoffs. Plus, The Fins Had No Qb At The Time.

200 Yd Rush Game.

I think we should bare in mind that FA acquisitions don't win superbowls. Just look at last season - Manning and the Broncos were disapointed, he was poor against the Ravens and wont be getting any better. The Bills with Mario Williams were just as poor as usual. The Patriots added Lloyd for a deep threat but we're no better than last year. The Bears traded for Marshall, were better, but didn't even make the play offs.

FA's are good for filling holes with productive players instead of developing them over time or adding a piece you can't find in the Draft to help you win now (e.g. Jacoby Jones). But the draft is far more important for our team. ireland should be judged not on whether he gets Wallace etc but on who he acquires in the 2013 draft and how well Tennehill, Miller and Martin progress this year.

Tiger Sam I think you sign Gibson because he catches the ball and makes plays. He is just like Hartline and imagine if you have three receivers who catch the ball and run good routs. It opens up the running game.

It also means Bess is not going to get big money next year when his contract is up. If they sign Gibson you can bet they are going to draft WR high. This sets next year up (2014).

Keep telling people this is a three year build, with hope for imporvement next season. Its another reason why you do not give Long big money. You see what a cheaper line can do.

We are going to play the 49's offense of the 80's next year and you dont really need a burner to do that you need guys who catch the ball and get first downs. It is also how you beat Brady, Manning, Brees. You keep them on the bench. Quick scores promote shoot outs and that is normally a crap shoot.

Go Dolphins!

'Appearing on SportsCenter Monday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter said he believed Mike Wallace will be the only player to earn over $10 million per year in free agency.

Someone better tell Cliff Avril and Jake Long. Schefter's comments are an indication some players may end up waiting too long for a pay-day that's never going to come, hurting their market in the end. The Dolphins are widely expected to make Wallace a $10 million man, but it's unclear if anyone else is willing to do so.'
Mar 11 - 9:32 AM

I haven't heard ONE other team that has been seriously connected to Wallace.

shula71,

I like Gibson too but what concerns me is the Rams are a team that needs WR help too and they're just prepared to let Gibson walk away. Looks like they are doing the same with Amendola too. So I don't get it....what gives?

Cut Thomas and replace with Mendenhall, that's the ticket.
