Dolphins interested in Rashard Mendenhall

The Dolphins will obviously add a running back to compete if Reggie Bush is allowed to walk in free agency as I've reported. Bottom line, they need more bodies because Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Jonas Gray and Marcus Thigpen aren't enough bodies to take to training camp.

And a competition between Miller and Thomas for the starting job seems less that inspiring because Miller seems to clearly be the better back.

But Rashard Mendenhall to the Dolphins?

Well, that's the buzz going around the NFL as voiced most loudly by NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah on his twitter feed over the weekend. Jeremiah, a former NFL scout, obviously has connections around the league so he's as credible as most.

But Rashard Mendenhall to the Dolphins?

Apparently the Dolphins are eyeing more than one prospective Steelers free agent. Obviously the Dolphins cannot sign Mendenhall until 4 p.m. on Tuesday when unrestricted free agency's signing period begins. So we're talking interest in the abstract right now.

But Mendenhall is an interesting guy.

Yes, he has loads of talent. Yes, he is a load himself at 5-10 and 225 pounds. Yes, he is very fast, having clocked in the 4.4s coming out of college. He was even fast enough to be Pittsburgh's kickoff return man earlier in his career.

Mendenhall, 25, also has two 1,000-yard seasons to his credit, those coming in 2009 and 2010.

But Mendenhall is something of an enigma and 2012 was a disaster for many reasons.

In January 2012 he suffered a torn ACL injury to a knee and had to spend his entire offseason rehabilitating the injury. Unlike Adrian Peterson who recovered from a similar injury like a champion, Mendenhall languished and simply wasn't the same player.

He not only played only six games but languished by gaining 3.6 yards per carry. And when coaches didn't think he was trying very hard, they deactivated him for a game against San Diego. Well, Mendenhall didn't bother to show up for that tilt. And so he was suspended for the next game against Dallas.

Mendenhall also stirred some controversy in May 2011 when he got on twitter and chided Americans for celebrating the killing of Osama bin Laden. One of his tweets seemed to suggest he didn't blame bin Laden for 9-11 by raising the possibility of a conspiracy theory.

Mendenhall tried to walk back his position by first tweeting he was just trying to stir conversation and then apologized outright through the Steelers. But Champion Sporting Goods dropped Mendenhall from an endorsement deal.

Mendenhall's, cough, interesting history, diminished production, and Pittsburgh's difficult salary cap situation are undoubtedly reasons the Steelers haven't re-signed the player. That the Dolphins are reportedly interested in Mendenhall -- something I've not idenpendently confirmed -- might be yet another example of the paradigm shift the team is undergoing in its approach to free agency.

The Denver Broncos are also reportedly interested in Mendenhall.

Yesterday's Gown (aka Peggy)--

It is here at last!! Our special 'Girls Day' when we get to have our nails and hair done and share feelings!!

Oh, how I treasure our time together, Peggy! OH, and I just remembered something else: SHOE SALE AT MACY'S!!!

See you in an hour!

The TE everyone is forgetting about is Brandon Myers. Caught 79 balls on a horrible Raiders team last year. He's 27 and a great target. Cook has arguably been an underacheiving bust for the Titans thus far and Myers will likely come cheaper.

As for Mendenhall, I'll pass. Somewhat injury prone and not the character guy I want in the locker room. I'm with Craig on this one.

I would rather take a shot on an all purpose back like Bradshaw (although injury prone as well), or Steven Jackson at the right price. Mendenhall is crud and coming off an ACL. No thanks

"Don't we have a ton of guys who can block?"

Actually Craig imo YG isn't far off there. I wouldn't go as far as must sign BUT,,,,,,,,but.

If we signed someone like Cook, who is known to be defficient as a blocker, we would then have three tight ends who don't block well. Clay still needs work (blocking) according to reports and Egnew is atrocious.

I've actually been thinking we should sign Fasano if the price is right (obviously) because it would allow us to sign or draft a pass catching tight end without worrying about his blocking abilities.

The two tight end set would be excellent with Fasano and Cook because Tannehill could just send them in motion to match Fasano up with the better pass rusher or run stuffer depending on the situation. So we could probably find another very good blocking TE but why not just hang on to Fasano who loves Miami and has been a great team guy.

Must sign,,,probably not. Good signing,,,,imo absolutely.

with tannehenne mixxing on 90% of his long balls 2 wallace during ota's and moore connecting on 90% of his long ballz 2 wallace during ota's.????
what 2 do,what 2 do.
lol

Craig,

Looks like we're getting Wallace. I believe deals like this one were put together weeks ago.

I still think we'll try to land one more big name. Maybe a RB, a TE, a RT or a DB. Assuming the news about Wallace is true, with ten draft picks to work with I actually believe that Ireland MIGHT have turned the corner for this franchise.

Nice post! I checked Cook's career numbers. Though he's easly faster and and more athletic than Fasano, his career numbers dont state he's a huge upgrade to Fasano. So maybe, maybe not.

When looking at Cook's career numbers, the evidence just isnt there to definitely say he's that much better or any better at all. Again, he looks like a maybe, maybe not.

Phins78,

When I say must sign, only CraigM would interpret it as Fasano is top tier. I made the post and inserted the word "supporting cast". Clearly CraigM hasnt a clue of what the term "supporting cast" means.

It gets tiresome reading how FA doesn't work. We are not talking about signing guys at the end of their stellar careers. We are talking about signing players in their PRIME. Wallace, Cook, Winston, Mendenhall. All an immediate upgrade.

Bobby,

Great point. It doesn't work when you get players past their prime but that's why getting a guy like Wallace & re-signing Hartline before they're both 27 is the way to go. These guys are both two years younger than Bowe & three years younger than Jennings.

I've been busy getting my business up and running for the spring so I haven't been here much. I will say I'm sick of arguing with people and now after reading some of these silly arguments over the past few weeks I have noticed how much time I wasted in doing the same thing.

Here's the truth, it's fun to debate but you're rarely going to change the mind of someone who has their own opinion. MOST of the arguments in here (not debates) stem from the fact that a person believes their own opinion is a fact and will argue it to the death. It seemes the terms fact and opinion are the same to a lot of people in here. Learning the difference would serve many bloggers well.

Lastly, if you start calling someone names and are getting mad you should probably take a step away from the computer and get some fresh air.

if da wop was on a diff. team last season,
tannehenne wouldn't have made it thru the texans game let alone 15-16.
but ya'll out of touch out of towners can't c this reading the box scores on mon.'s
lol

Buster - first time I have noticed your comments. Wish we had more fans like you posting. I especially liked it when you said we are fans and optimist etc. We need more true fans and rah rah people posting here, Some of the jackwads on this blog sound like 10 year olds running amok on mommy's computer.

Phins78,

Im not a Jeff Ireland expert, but all of the Fa speculation seems to be swirling around signing offensive players. So if all of these speculations pans out. Then it seems Ireland would be planning to go defensive heavy in this year's draft.

Especially the upper rounds. We probably see an olineman sprinkled in that mix too. Depending if Ireland gets Eric Winston signed.

But I expect ZERO wr in the 1st 3 picks if Ireland signs both Wallace and Brandon Gibson.

That's a wonderful fantasy you've come up with but when Moore struggles in camp,,,AGAIN,,,for the 6th year in a row wiull you finally realize he is a career backup or will you be calling for him to start again next year?

I just solved a mystery!

Mr. Craig keeps saying Mr. Gone has all these aliases. Cries about it all day. WAHHH WAHHHH WAHHHH

Yet, still tries to engage him. Why? EVEN NOW! We see him for what he is. An attention hua.

If he aint the center of attn, he trolls who differs w/him. Ranting & raving through bloggers posts.

In Summary:

Mr. M - troll
Mr. Gone - idiot for feeding him

tannereach is lost out there w/out that te,
lane axxignments on the db's and lb's that r come'n in 2 take his axx off,
lane axx's on the rb's on o same as the knucklehead wr's "the 456's", telling them where they should be but some??
lol

I love that! Makes me laugh every time 2 watt writes it. "Out of touch out of towners". As if people can't understand what is going on in Miami because we don't live there. lmao,,,love that post,,,it gets funnier every time I read it.

Hey wtf are they trying to sign free agents for, they're all from out of town. They couldn't possibly understand what is going on with Miami football.

Classic 2 watt, love it!

Posted by: Just an Observation | March 11, 2013 at 12:30 PM

Actually, I dont feed him, just love irritating hell out him. He's mommy's big baby and is easy to rattle. LOL...

'The priority resigning that must happen that hasnt happened yet is Anthony Fasano'.

YG,

What I read for your comment is that this is the priority 'that must happen'. Where did I say anything about 'top tier'. You're saying this is move the team 'has to make'. I'll disagree with you and Phins78 on this one. I don't this is even close to reality. He's an average TE at best. So we need to resign him for his blocking? Huh? How about Mastrud? I think we'd be just fine with Kevin Boss as a replacement. 'Must sign'.....nah....more like waste of money.

And YG, does it help you get your post across any better by putting the whole thing in caps? It didn't read any better but considering most of your posts, yeah, it might make some sense.

YG4E who are you trying to fool, everyone knows thats you moron everytime you feel multiple people dont like you you change names and go on the attack.

and he's here, the closet box score queen himself, 78.
lol

clueless clueless clueless clueless homers.

WTH would you know about averave? You arent even close to being an average poster. LOL...

2watt stop trying to be clever, it's not working. You rarely make sense but are very amusing and I love reading your posts. Love the character man! The ironically ill informed Dolphins fan. It's a great act, bravo sir.

YG,

You doing the old flipper-o on Cook? Anyone surprised?

Just a few weeks ago, 'there wasn't a chance in Hell the Titans were letting this guy go'. Everyone was an idiot for even suggesting it.

Then @12:20pm I read:

'Though he's easly faster and and more athletic than Fasano, his career numbers dont state he's a huge upgrade to Fasano. So maybe, maybe not.

Are you SURE somebody out there isn't impersonating you? I don't know how else somebody could change their mind on somebody SO dramatically within the span of just a few weeks. Amazing!

Why thank you! As long as CraigM, Child Predator Aligator Mark, and yourself are here. I always be the 4TH BEST moron here.

Thx for your invaluable input. Its dearly welcomed! LOL...

Lots of rumors going on, find this one interesting from RotoWorld. Long will resign with Fins for 5 years 38 million. Thoughts??

Only your dumbest of dumbasses would "GROSSLLY MISINTERPRET" this part. You cant even see how stupid you are.

WOW! UNFKINGBELIVABLE................. LOL...

Craig,

I have YG with at least ten different aliases who argue with each other as soon as anyone challenges his posts. Hopefully you realize how disturbed & mentally ill this person truly is.

I guarantee that a bunch of asinine aliases will appear with comments towards me & then towards YG to make it seem like it's not him. How sad is that???

I don't know why Mando doesn't just ban him already b/c he consistently destroys his blog.

They also have Mendenhall coming here at 3 million 1 year and Delaine Walker for TE at 5 year 20 million

Oh, and you have to love Hartline. The kid is talking like he did the Dolphins a favor instead of just being grateful for the generous contract for a guy who was productive , in yards and first downs, for exactly one season. "I could've got more on the open market but wanted to stay here", "I'm curious how much I would have made in free agency".

So why didn't you test the market? Hmmmmmmm wouldn't have hurt you right? UNLESS,, your agent told you to take the offer because he thought you would be offered less in free agency which would then in turn drive the Dolphins price down? Could that be the real truth behind why you stayed? Yeah, please stop making yourself out to be a hero to the Dolphins and show some class.

While you're at it, this year during the times you're open but the ball doesn't come to you could you not throw your hands up in the air and look at the sideline like a snotty child? These things happen, especially when your 11 million dollar a year LT is doing his best impression of a turnstile. Oh also, maybe stop making fun of your QBs intelligence to the media considering the kid is far more intelligent then you will ever hope to be. Thanks guy.

(reposted from two days ago at the end of a thread, I'm not loving Hartline right now).

Honestly, if we want to run an up tempo offense we will go with Cook. If we want a TE who blocks and is a seam threat, the Fins should go all out for Bennett.

Cooks gone for being a 'youg stud TE' to 'no clear upgrade on Fasano' in a matter of weeks. Why? Because he got hurt, or old or played poorly? No. Because of a re-evaluation of his NUMBERS.

Admit it YG, you have NO idea what you're talking about, right?

YG4E who are you trying to fool, everyone knows thats you moron everytime you feel multiple people dont like you you change names and go on the attack.

If I were truly YG as you are insinuating, would I really have called myself an idiot in my post?

As you stumble & mumble w/that answer in the kitchen with a lead pipe, you should know you it's ironic that as Mr. M is being ridiculed, multiple aliases pop out to attack Mr. Gone.

I'm not conspiracy theorist as you appear to be but, that is exactly the same as what you accuse Mr. Gone of.

Irony or Coincidence?

78, how much is that espn box score app on u'r i phone co$t.?
lol

WNP, Mendenhall or Shonne Green??

WNPs @12:44pm,

Got ya man. Great observation.

I just find it hilarious how quickly this guy changes his opinion. ZERO conviction in what he believes in.

And you're right, his good friends LOL and truth hurts will be here any second. They're at the park with the kids (wink!wink!).

boby, I think if Long would agree to those terms, the Dolphins would do it in a second.

This relationship reminds me of the old ... "yeah I really like you but not sure i want to marry you and live under these terms" scenario. But if you wanted to be exclusive and maybe even live together, that would be cool...

bobby, my thoughts on that are lets wait and see. These reports seem to be 50/50 most years. I always remember looking back and wondering if half of it is made up.

But if it were true, for 7.6 mil a year I'm fine with it. That's a pretty big cut for him to take and there are other teams interested, I would be shocked if it were true. I guess there could be incentives in the back end of the deal and that would be very fair, I would be impressed that Jake accepted a deal like that and it would renew my faith in him.

And then we would just have to hop he didn't turn into the next Boselli.

bobby,

Either guys upgrades this offence. I'm not smart enough to tell you whether Cook or Bennett are the best fit, I'd like either to tell you the truth. I'm SO sick of seeing average TE play from this team and either guy makes this offence better, as does Eiffert.

That's why Ireland and the boys make the big money. Not my call.

Mr. Obvious,

Forgot to mention something. I can say with 100% accuracy that you have no idea what a "comma" is or what it's for.

Just an observation.

Bennett would cost around 5 million a year, I would think Cook goes for a little less.

Posted by: We Need Playmakers | March 11, 2013 at 12:44 PM

See what I mean, I leave your dumb ass alone then you run to take up for your girlfrind CraigM. Just a few weeks ago you and I discussed this. You agreed to truce.

Wow, talking of those Armando should ban. Stupidity know no limits. Game on again baby, the entire blog see I tried with your idiotic ass. LOL...

"If I were truly YG as you are insinuating, would I really have called myself an idiot in my post?"

Yes you would, because in your tiny brain you believe you're fooling everyone by not so secretly covering your tracks, nice try though, back to the ole drawing board for you!

bobby,

I was one of the staunchest backers here of Long but I think it's time to move on. Contract sounds fair to me, I just don't know I want the Dolphins paying it. I'd be happier going with Martin and Winston or Loadholdt, at a fraction of the cost and spending the money other places. We drafted Martin and Miller last year. Let's see if they're any good or not and if they have to be replaced.

Mark and Phins78. I think we will know quick on Jake. Depends on how much interest he got during these 3 days.

Honestly, if we want to run an up tempo offense we will go with Cook. If we want a TE who blocks and is a seam threat, the Fins should go all out for Bennett.

Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 11, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Smart thinking. I really wonder how quickly some posters get infatuated with underacheiving FA's? I would take Bennett in a New York Minute over Cook. Why overpay for potential upside? The Fins need playmakers that can bring it. Cook has shown zero consistency with the Titans. Show me on the field before you come looking for a big payday. And maybe YG changed his mind after further evaluation. That's not allowed?

Some of you guys make me laugh.

WNP = He Needs A Brain

Fo-sho' LOL....

Walker, really?? I heard they weren't enamored with that dude. Or was that just Mando hypothesizing?

bobby,

We'll disagree. I think when it's all said and done Cokk gets more than Bennett and I'm not certain doesn't get that deal done with the Titans when it's all said and done.

I wish I could laugh with you 2 watt but I still am having a hard time deciphering your meaning/code. I do not own an i-phone I have an old samsung at&t slide open. I don't need internet on my phone, as long as it dials and texts I'm good. Call me old school.

Craig M, I'm torn on Jake. If he is healthy, he is top 10. If he isn't, we are in trouble signing him. As far as TE, I been calling for an upgrade since Gronkowski. See what happens.

I do have an i-pad though 2 watt, just don't feel it's necessary to have all of those distractions on my phone. When I'm at work I (unlike 90% of the country) actually work and don't sit and stare at my phone for hours.

drop it already craig! no one cares about who you think is who & what they say about you! the way you act, you deserve it & then some.

"WNP, Mendenhall or Shonne Green??"

I love Mendehall. Always have. I have no idea what happened but something was off in Pittsburgh's locker room last year. When I read that some anonymous Steeler was ripping Lamar Woodley for not being in shape & for having a bad year??? That's just not the way the Steelers do things.

Perhaps a 'mini mutiny' started b/c the guys on offense didn't like that Arains was replaced with Todd Haley & his short passing game. It's not a secret that LOTS of players can't stand Haley & I still can't understand why Arians was fired. I know Ben wasn't happy about it. Wouldn't be surprised if Wallace & Mendehall felt the same way.

Well guess the fk what dreamers? You aint getting Cook or Bennett. Youre stroking yourselves, but would just just cumm already? LOL...

Mark in Toronto, RotoWorld made the call on Walker. I know, I know, it's an opinion from some dude but find it interesting to discuss

Craig-
Not with you on this one buddy. While Cook has upside, I'm not overpaying for upside. That's commonly where Free Agency kills you. Bennett is more of complete player, and I would take Brandon Myers for half the price because the guy gets open.

Guys like Cook, Mendenhall.. even Wallace at the pricetag, are simply not worth the spend. I have been clamoring for top FA's to come to Miami for years, but none of these guys are top caliber players in my eyes.

bobby,

They brought Long in for a medical eval last week so it could be a possibilty. I haven't heard anything about Delaney Walker, the Fins supposably are enamored with Jared cook.

"WNP, Mendenhall or Shonne Green??"

I love Mendehall. Always have.
