Dolphins officially interested in Wallace, but ...

The Miami Dolphins have done what everyone expected them to do during this free agency signing period and have officially shown interest in prospective Pittsburgh Steelers free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace. (That is now fact).

So, as I write in my column in Sunday's Miami Herald, the question is no longer whether the Dolphins actually want Mike Wallace. We're past that.

The question now is whether the Dolphins can land Mike Wallace?

I have no tangible information what it will take. Presumably a deal for Wallace is going to hit at least $12 million a year. And presumably, it will be done sometime next week. (That part is speculation).

More facts, you say?

Well, check the column because it discusses how the Dolphins have shifted their approach this free agency -- at least somewhat. Let's just say that their interest in 36-year-old Charles Woodson is significant because it shows the team is more willing to expand its search for talent.

Older guys are not out of bounds any more as long as they offer significant talent.

By the way, because it will take a good amount of money to sign Wallace and eventually a good amount of the salary cap you should know the Dolphins are at approximately $30.5 million in available cap space.

And, as many of you come to this blog or follow me on twitter to ask my opinion, I tell you exactly what I think of Miami's chances of getting Wallace ... in the column.

mattyb if Gibson is a 3rd or 4th receiver with 5 TD's last year what does that make Hartline?

dribble, all dribble...

Orlando, if the Fins love Fasano, then they need a reality check. This team needs a "Real" number one TE, and that will never be Fasano. As far as Long, I would also be disgusted if they overpay a guy who has broken down 2 years in a row. We have much better options. Incarcerated Bob?? Lol

ALoco blows balls

I do believe they are trying to work with Long's side for him to remain here. Ireland said it. Bush gone? I believe it also. Philbin sat him down twice last year. etc, etc.

Pa

Just did some research on "Incarcerated Bob" and his IBN Network. He has an accuracy rating of 29% and is considered a "Fraud" by many outlets. I put very little credence into what this guy says.

Why does it seem the Phins are rumored to be talking to so many guys? Mendenhall, Gibson, Wallace, Jennings and Welker. Seems Mr. Ireland is very busy working to upgrade this team and keep his options open.

Go jeffy go get um

Ask Steelers fans about Wallace. Most of them want him gone because he starts dogging it when he doesn't feel like playing or gets an attitude. Hardly a guy you want to throw big money t.

Hilarious that Salguero's "encouraged" that the Dolphins want Wallace.

As if it's not an abomination that they've purged and scorned every single talented player to this point.

Yea Steve, except most fans all of a sudden find fault with a player who no longer wants to be on their team. I wouldn't put one ounce of credibility in what "Steeler Fans" have to say about Wallace.

Dadsmithwest,

B/c Ireland threw down the gauntlet several weeks back when he said he needs to add a playmakers & everyone knows we have the cap space to do it. If we don't get Wallace it's only b/c SOME team offered him a deal that's in another stratosphere. Ireland knows that Wallace will cost close to $12 Million & will exceed Bowe's deal. Why??? B/c he's two years younger, he hasn't had legal issues, & he's one of the most explosive players in the league.

I'd be VERY surprised at this point if we don't sign either Wallace or Gibson. Would definitely love to get Mendenhall as well.

12 million for a player that has questionable work ethic, has problems holding on to the ball, and only had 836 yards last year with a top 10 QB throwing to him. Doesn't seem to add up.

Pass on Wallace. Gimme Jennings and Asomogha when he gets released from Philly. Draft a corner, wr and bpa in whatever order with our first three picks and im good. Do yo dance Jeffrey, do yo thang!

Bobby,

Agreed. What Steve is leaving out is that the Steelers offered Wallace a deal before this season & it's only after he turned them down that they extended Antonio Brown. They bit the bullet on Wallace b/c they knew--with their cap situation--that they couldn't afford him.

Wallace had 4 drops in the Cinci game alone last year.

Bobby12's point on Wallace and how Steeler fans now hate him, is like how we felt about Brandon MArshall after he was traded. When he played we loved him, now we think he is a butthole...Bobby12 you are correct. But, I think we might disagree on Fasano,. I love him on our team,he is such a great player to have on our team, he does what is asked, scores TD's , seems to be a solid leader and blocks like a muthafuqa, but we need a TE like Cook who can produce big gains for us. I hope we resign him!

Was Wallace an All Pro?We need a vertical TE ,2CB,aS,and a pass rusher in free agency(fill in the rest in the draft,oh & a OT.But I'd love to have a Wallace on my team. All U free agents take your "talents" to South Beach Baby!!

Good idea Philly, cause Asomogha as you call him did so much to earn his $15 milllion last year the Eagles are cutting him.

And just to add to my last post. I do think Brandon Marshall is a butthole

WNP there's some jilted girlfriend Steelers fans but there are also the ones who have watche every professional game Wallace has played for them. The assessment there is he has issues with his hands, fighting for the ball, and his route running. Can't just write it all off as fans being spurned.

fasano sucks, tired of him. let him go

Numb,

You forgot his eight TD's on an offense that struggled with Todd Haley & his short passing game replacing Bruce Arians offense. BTW--Big Ben not only missed three games this year but also admitted he was not close to 100% down the stretch.

The guy has caught 26 TD's over the last three years.

wallace would be a huge get, lets keep hoping

Will be nowhere near 15 mill this year. Aside from the kid from Jack (Cox) or Grimes, which corner would u rather have. Id be good with any cuz it fills a need and we can draft another. Honestly Grimes is the one i've wanted all along but since it looks like Nnamdi will now be available too im not sure which one i'd rather us sign. I know u dont want Nnamdi, which one would u sign (cause i think we MUST sign one)?

we need 2 legit starting corners

Good call again dusty. The SunSentinal reporting the Dolphins are targeting Jared Cook.

I think thinking Fasano as well if they can afford it would be a good idea, for his blocking ability.

of course i meant keeping fasano

tuesday is gonna be fun

WNP, all I need to look at is comparing Wallace to the Johnson's, Andre and Calvin at the same point in their careers and I am all for signing Wallace.

Who gets signed next just before FA either tonight or tomorrow is my question? and what surprises are out there Mr. Ireland has been working on behind the scenes? He's put us in an interesting scenario entering FA where we are competing for a lot of good name guys.

I read we are the "lead dog" for Wallace at this point because it's warm here. Interesting but let's see how this plays out. I'm still not convinced we'll get him until he signs the contract.

..We are all getting fired up for free agency. Who will be a Phin, and how will that translate into helping Tannehill develop. Best case scenario we improve the weapoms at our diposal, and the offense has a makeover. With this said. What is a realistic expectaion as far as how many Td's we should expect from Tannehill(should he stay healthy

I looked at rookie quarterbacks from 2009, 2010, 2011, and 12. The biggest improvement was from Josh Freeman. He improved 15 td passes from 10 in 2010 to 25 in 2011(27 last year) Sam Bradford had 18 tds his rookie year, down to 6 in 2010(injury) up to 21 last year.

The class of 2011 Andy Dalton had 20 tds up to 27 last year. Cam Newton 21 down to 19. Ponder 13- up to 18. Blaine Gabbert 12 down to 9.

This years class Tannehill had the lowest td production with 12. So even if we do improve his weapons. What is a real number? What should we expect?
I would say that if he approached a plus 10 number..Something in the range of 22-25 Td's..That would be outstanding. Since he set the bar so low. It makes it a bit easier to guage his improvement.

Now I'm not trying to point blame as to why. We all know we were a challenged group. Upgrades should help with the totals. But what is a number that would make all these aquisitions worth it? Is a total of 18-20 more realistic?

yeah wallace still so young at 26, best is yet to come

WNP,

I will give that to him. He does catch TD's, but is that worth 12 million a year? Heck, Mike Williams had 9 TDs last year. Is he worth that type of money? I think even Heath Miller had 9 TDs last year playing in the same offense. Wallace is a good receiver. Just not 12 million a year good

Philly,

Asomugha is kind of an enigma. He was a legitimate shut down corner with the Raiders and then just regressed terribly with the Eagles last year.

I think the price may be too steep to find out who the real Nnamdi is.

yeah the fact that everyone reports us as lead dog on wallace makes me think we wont get him, media is never right

Rdubs, let me clarify about Fasano. I like Fasano, but not in the # 1 slot. He did well with Martin when he was in the #2 slot. Like Hernandez of the Pats. He has Gronkowski in the #1 slot. We need a guy like Bennett or Cook in the #1 slot. That is why I don't want to resign Fasano

who cares what hes worth, we have the money so spend it. we know hes a good player, all that matters

WNP there's some jilted girlfriend Steelers fans but there are also the ones who have watche every professional game Wallace has played for them. The assessment there is he has issues with his hands, fighting for the ball, and his route running. Can't just write it all off as fans being spurned.

Darkoak,

Look...I couldn't care less what Steeler fans think & say about anything. The Steelers organization made Wallace an offer before the 2012 season & he turned it down b/c he though he deserved more. So guess what??? He & his agent were right.

The bottom line is that he's going to turn 27 August & someone is going to make Wallace the 3rd highest paid WR in the NFL. Might as well be us.

Dolfan Rick, agree with you. I think Fins will be looking at Grimes and or Houston for CB. Grimes is really solid and would be my pick.

This is what Wallace had to say about his drops last season. "When I don’t get the ball for a certain amount of time, I lose focus sometimes. It hurts me when it’s time for me to make a play."

Is this really a guy we want to pay big money for?

asomuga i would love to have. the d philly ran wasnt suited for him. let him be a lockdown corner again could be a bargain for us

who cares what hes worth, we have the money so spend it. we know hes a good player, all that matters

Dusty,

Exactly. People on here are acting like it's THEIR money. Relax...It's Steve Ross' money. You know, the guy who paid $1.5 Billion to be the owner...Yeah that guy.

It's not like we're overpaying for a guy that's washed up like Jake Long or someone who can't make plays like Sean Smith.

I think i'm setting myself up for disapointment..lol

I'm not liking the sound of Brandon Gibson..at all.

I could of lived with Gibson last year as opposed to Naannae or Binns but not after all this build up.

Jeffy don't make me build one of those Fire Ireland signs!!..lol

Guess who is the top team looking into signing Sean Smith? According to a report the New England Patriots are eagerly pursuing Sean Smith. It seems that Bill Belichick is not as down on Sean Smith as Dolphin fans. I hope that he does not come back to hunt us like Wes Welker did if he signs with the Pats.

grimes and houston both would be huge. i like lewis also

One true concern I have is Randy Starks. Everybody knows he's not happy at having been tagged. Is he a character Guy? Will he perform as well this Season as in years past? Hmm...

Orlando, we can't be running around worrying about who the Pats may or may not sign. That is not a winning formula. Sean goes to the Pats, oh well. Unless he can open his hips quicker and find closing speed somewhere, I'm not to worried.

1. RT Eric Winston: A cheaper and perhaps more viable option to re-signing LT Jake Long presented itself Wednesday when the Chiefs released Winston, 29, after one season. He started all 16 games each of the last six seasons — five with Houston — and allowed just three sacks in 2012.

Winston, a former University of Miami star who visited the Dolphins as part of his free agency tour last year, would fit in well. The Dolphins could slide rookie Jonathan Martin (he had a year in the weight-room to get stronger) to left tackle, where he played the last four games last season, and insert Winston on the right side. He also would help fill the leadership void created by Long’s departure and could mentor Martin and young tackle Will Yeatman.

Winston has several direct ties to the Dolphins. He began his NFL career with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in Houston. And Winston’s younger brother, Matt Winston, is a college scout for the Dolphins.

Agree with the system for Nnamdi. I definetly think we need to get either Grimes or Asomogha. Bigger priority IMO to wr or tackle cuz our corners suck! Good wr's can be found in the 2nd n 3rd round of fhe draft year after year(Marshall was a 3 or 4 if im not mistaken), shutdown corners are drafted in the top 20 picks.

Dusty, agreed. That would be super and the 2 CBs I would most like. Grimes and Houston

Numb,

It's not YOUR money. However if it were mine to spend, I would want Wallace. He's a legitimate game breaker & he's going to help us win more games.

Well on the bright side Orlando. I don't think the Pats have the money to sign Smith, Vollmer, and Wallace.

who cares what hes worth, we have the money so spend it. we know hes a good player, all that matters

Dusty,

The obvious response is we care because we can sign other quality players with that money instead of wasting it on one player.

WNP, I am more concerned about getting this deal done quickly with Wallace. Worse thing would be an extended negotiation while other FAs are signed. I would have went in and told Wallace, 5 years, 60 million?? You got it. You need to sign right now so we can announce this Tuesday and worry about other holes to fill.

From my angle, I don't think anybody is crazy enough that will pay SS 10 million a year. Relax.

You are right Oscar that's playmaker money
