Dolphins officially interested in Wallace, but ...

The Miami Dolphins have done what everyone expected them to do during this free agency signing period and have officially shown interest in prospective Pittsburgh Steelers free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace. (That is now fact).

So, as I write in my column in Sunday's Miami Herald, the question is no longer whether the Dolphins actually want Mike Wallace. We're past that.

The question now is whether the Dolphins can land Mike Wallace?

I have no tangible information what it will take. Presumably a deal for Wallace is going to hit at least $12 million a year. And presumably, it will be done sometime next week. (That part is speculation).

More facts, you say?

Well, check the column because it discusses how the Dolphins have shifted their approach this free agency -- at least somewhat. Let's just say that their interest in 36-year-old Charles Woodson is significant because it shows the team is more willing to expand its search for talent.

Older guys are not out of bounds any more as long as they offer significant talent.

By the way, because it will take a good amount of money to sign Wallace and eventually a good amount of the salary cap you should know the Dolphins are at approximately $30.5 million in available cap space.

And, as many of you come to this blog or follow me on twitter to ask my opinion, I tell you exactly what I think of Miami's chances of getting Wallace ... in the column.

Comfortablynumb, Wallace is the playmaker in this draft. What you are saying is lets sign some average guys. Sorry but its time to stop signing average and sign THE GUY

You draft safeties

i hope the pats waste a big chunk on smith, we will throw at him all day. agree on gibson, i dont want him unless we got wallace also. if hes the second option im not gonna be happy

Oscar, something tells me Starks gets his long term deal done which will cut his cap hit in half before the season starts. Just a guess

That's what this 3 day window is for, to test the Market. In my opinion, neither Long nor SS are going to get the $ they want. So it might be to their benefit to re-sign here.

starks is a gamer, even if he stays with the one year deal the guy will play hard

If you remember last year the Bucs locked up V Jax on day one. I'm hoping that we do with Wallace.

oscar we dont want them back, they arent welcomed. so they have to move on

yes it has to be done day one else it could be a disaster on getting others in here without knowing for sure what we have left. vjax was a stud last year btw

bears made long an offer, he loves the midwest. bet he signs there tuesday

I actually like the Buc's GM. I don't know if Schiano is the right coach but that GM has been solid in the draft and free agency.

schiano IS the right coach

Seems you arent hardly any at all during the season. I'll take it that you're more of an offseason creature here correct?

Also, I think that you should spend more time here during season. You contribute very valuable input most times. I think most of contribute valuable input most times. None of us are perfect and you can place me first in line on that. LOL...

Its reported the Bears have the highest interest of all in Jake Long. Then 2nd are the Rams.

It mayb a foregone conclusion that Jake Long becomes a Ram.

Congratulations Miami Heat on Win number 18 in a row.

That was valuable..lmao!!

Smith freakin sucks man he's the worst corner we ever had after Marshall of course so I guess he'll be cut too. Good riddance mr. Marshall

If we signed Gibson, Long, Cook, and draft Tavon Austin and Zach Ertz I would be happy. That is a better deal than just signing Wallace. You would also have enough money to find a FA replacement for Sean Smith.

If the only big free agent signing this off season is Gibson then fans can be upset. There are other ways to making this off season success.

Eric Winston only gave up 3 sacks last year? Heck..Jake Long gave that up in the first 4 games last year. He's my solution to filling the open tackle position with Jake likely walking.

Sean smith is a loser , always will be

I just don't want another Marshall situation. I would rather allocate the money we would be spending on Wallace, on our secondary and a top notch seam threat TE. Has nothing to do with wanting average players.

Jake long will not be back either

Phins.com apparently getting loaded. I can't get in.

We still have some fat to trim Marshall 4 mil. Patterson 4 mil. Carpenter 3 mil. That's another 11 mill. ,,,,,,,,lets go shopping dudes

Rather have Winston n Jennings for $14 or 15 mill than Wallace for $13 mill.

Me either Oscar

Almost time to load up!!!!!!! Two more days

Your scenario there isn't terrible but this FO has spent this entire off season thus far talking about the big slpash their going to make.

I would be lying if I said I wouldn't be disapointed if it didn't happen. It aslo would make me a little suspect of their plan altogether.

Wallace , cook , Gibson ,,,,,,,,holy cow it's gonna happen

Comfortablynumb, but that's exactly what we will be getting. Wallace is the one player that can make the biggest difference IMO. Signing Wallace in no way shape or form depletes are cap space so we can't continue to sign others.

Then we have the draft

That's a lot of picks man

Imagine if we trade back in the first.

I want the Jennings/Winston signings too. I'd rather spread out the money and get 2 very good players. At least in a couple days a lot of the speculation will be over and we'll know who the team picked up.

If they feel Winston can fill our need he will be here

Congrats! Your blog is selected for our iPhone 5 Giveaway. Kindly fillout the details so we can consider you for the offer.

I think John Jerry can be our right tackle

Marc from nj, we should have at least 5 of those 7 picks starting. Ireland needs to be thinking this way, and demanding that from himself.

The second 4th rder isn't a given yet is it?

Yup, Jeff is doing his work as we speak

If Jennings gets hurt or has a major slow down, everyone here yells how its the same old Dolphins. Signing the acorns and being safe. Signed the old guy who got injured and let the kid who has no injury past get away.

cook is a very good tight end or receiver whatever he is he's a threat

That post is nasty as hell man

You guys still talking Jennings? He is not the same receiver. Too many younger options with more upside. Jennings would be a waste of time and money.

Time to concentrate on the Walking Dead. Goodnight to the real Fin Fans. And ALoco, grow a pair or get better tampons.

Later bobby. 2 more days!

Dolfan Rick,

Imagine a receiving group that includes Gibson, Hartline, Austin, and Bess. Then a TE group that includes Ertz and Cook. Your line would still have Long (or Winston). The offense would be dynamite and you would not be crippling your future with the Wallace signing. I actually like this scenario a lot. It is fun playing amateur GM.

Agree totally, amateur GM is fun as hell. Only problem with that scenario is between Cook and Ertz h have 2 TE's that dont block worth a crap. They do present tremendous mismatches tho threw the air. Subsitute the ND t-end for austin and Ertz for Robert Woods and i like where ur going with that. Should leave money to sign a couple good peices on the D side of the ball as well (Grimes, Houston, Cox, Ed Reed, Woodson, freeney, osi, etc etc) probably could get one or two of those guys under that scenario.

Must draft receivers who can run block. Hartline, Bess, major liability...
Bring on Patterson, Allen.
Dolphins tight ends are worst in the league.
How can Ireland be so irresponsible? Skill position players are very important and have none.

Sorry Orlando but that corps looks to me like 3 average wr's and one rookie with "potential". I really like Austin though but I think he'll go in the bottom of the 1st where we don't have a pick.

I really don't think we'll be crippling our future with a Wallace signing.

You just have to be creative with the cap. I think Ireland and Dawn Aponte can handle it.

Dolfan Rick,

The TEs in my scenario could be comparable to Gronkowski and Hernandez (Ertz and Cook). Austin is dynamic and you are right that he is projected to go in the early to late 20s. Trading down would be ideal as there are no WRs or TEs worth taking at 12. Not signing Wallace would allow you to have money to work on the secondary and the OL.

If you notice the pats have a contending team every year but they don't over spend. The only ones making huge money on that team are Brady and Wilfork. You need money for the rest of your team. Look at Detroit, they are paying almost 19 million a year for Calvin Johnson (best receiver in the league), yet the are worse than fins. You have to spend wisely, and not compromise the future if you want to be successful for years to come.

The Dolphins should offer BOGO tickets next season to try and fill the stadium.

Eifert and Woods would be nice too. Not sure if you have seen highlights of Austin though. He also runs a 4.3 in the 40s. Mike Mayo is pretty good at projecting players and he loves this guy. He thinks that he is a big time football player and not just a fast guy.

I do think that the fins are going to sign Wallace. Just hope that it is a contract that does not compromise the fins in the future. Wallace will probably be our only FA signing because he is so expensive. We will still have holes at RT, 2 CBs, a pass rusher, and a pass catching TE. That is a lot of needs going into the draft.

The way Ireland drafts wouldnt we be much better off trading the draft picks for established players?

Austin looks to me like a combo of welker n percy harvin on steroids! Really like him but feel that the only way we get him is by trading down, which Ireland is known to do. So many different ways to do it, interested to see how they go about filling most or all of those holes. Between FA on fuesday, the schedule and new logo coming out and the draft.....fun time to be a Dolphan!

AtlFin, great point. The only problem is I'm not sure if Ireland admits that he stinks at drafts.

And Ross doesnt care about winning. He just wants to meddle with a sports team and invite celebs to watch.
